  • canister filter cleaning for saltwater aquarium. you must clean trapped fish waste and uneaten food that collects in the canister filter WEEKLY! or it will become a nitrate factory. nitrates are the last stage of the biological cycle in salt water aquariums. nitrates are bad for fish and corals and must be removed from the water and filtration media. this video shows how I clean my canister filter which I use in my quarantine hospital aquarium tank. I clean it weekly and sometimes every few days.

    I believe this is why people suffer from going through a mini cycle. They wait too long to clean their filter. You have to get rid of all the waste and actually clean your stuff. I rinse my sponges under tap water (I have chlorine in my tap water) and believe it's good to do this from time to time so all the weak bacteria are killed off, and more of the hardier bacteria thrives. The only time I ever had a mini cycle was when I overcrowded a tank. I only do freshwater but wanted to see how you saltwater guys do it. Thanks for the video.

    • @ROTTERtube
      @ROTTERtube  7 років тому +1

      thanks. you're right. many people just wait and are lazy. it must be done. i always just replaced the foam weekly since i wanted no trace of anything left. i believe canister filters should be used to FILTER and not house bacteria. in saltwater, we use live rock and sand and other ways to house bacteria. great points, thanks for watching!

    Awesome!!! Thank you so much, this was so helpful!!! Informative and entertaining, as always! Your channel is great because you actually care and joke around, unlike some on here that are super serious and never answer questions. I agree, those guys at the fish stores can give some insanely bad information..it's no wonder we have to go through all this crap to learn most of this on our own, the hard way. Luckily, there are informative channels like yours to help us now! When I cleaned my canister not too long ago I rinsed in tap water instead of some water pulled from my tank's and it killed my torch corals:( I do have a question though, how often do you change your carbon? And do you just rinse it when you are cleaning the filter if you do reuse it? If you ever want to try another canister filter, you should check out the sunsun 304B canister filter with a built in UV sterilizer and 525gph under $100 on amazon. I run two of them on my 110 gal and really like mine now that I know how to use it correctly, thanks to you!! I use bio balls as well, and yes you must take care of the bacteria on the balls, LOL!!

      +Ashley L Ashley, thank you so much for the nice words. they really mean a lot! getting really nice comments like this makes me want to turn out better material. i'm really glad it was able to help you out. i really love this canister filter. i do not use carbon in it since this is being used in my quarantine aquarium where i dose copper to kill the ich parasite. carbon will remove copper from the water, which is something you don't want to do. I actually never use copper. i read somewhere carbon affects tang fish in an odd way and i have seen them act a little odd. once i stopped using carbon they were fine. anyway, when i was using it briefly, i would use new carbon each time and change it out once a month. i will look into that canister filter you mentioned. i remember you mentioned that before. i think i'll be buying another one for use in my main tank. i want to experiment with connecting the canister filter to the pvc that drains into the sump. the flow would go right into the filter. i want to get away from sump socks. either way, i think i will get rid of the socks and use another canister filter in the sump, along with protein skimmer. i will of course do a show on this whenever it happens. thanks again for stopping by and i'm really glad you like the channel. thanks for the compliments! i'm serious but i have to make it fun.

    ok, ok...I get it....your telling me to stop being lazy and clean my damn filter. Heh heh.
    Personally, for my 75gallon fresh water, that is heavily planted, I let mine go a month, but I'm lazy, and its an extra large filter. Besides, the plants do some filtering of their own.
    Good vid, lots of great info. I would tend to aggree, if your using a canister for salt water, your going to have to keep that sucker clean!

      Rotter Tube Reef thanks for the reply. It's amazing how clear the tank can be with ammonia, nitrite and nitrates skyrocketing. My nitrates are surprisingly at 40 ppm. Should I do a water change or just let the tank keep going. No fish or anything alive in there yet.

    Just my 2 cents Lava rock is cheap and very efficient as a filter media. I'm not saying other media is bad but bio load lava rock is natural along with crushed coral works great. Keeps ph steady. Just my 2 cents I like natural down to earth stuff. As far as filter cleaning depends on bio load in tank urine is the main culprit in any closed system. I prefer two filters canister and an inline system. The older the system the more stable the aquarium will be. I always cultivated algae in my tanks.. But that's just my was said Frank lol

    • @ROTTERtube
      @ROTTERtube  7 років тому

      beware of crushed coral. it holds nitrates. i'll never use it. lots of videos online with people having sand made of crushed coral and it's a nitrate disaster.

    Hey bud a little unrelated. I am confused how to dose alk. cal. magnesium. dosing pumps for each? ugh. or kalkwaser in auto top off seems like easiest system and hand dose the magnesium. How do you do it? Love your shows

    • @ROTTERtube
      @ROTTERtube  8 років тому +1

      +eric olsen Hey Eric, great questions. I think this will vary from tank to tank and person to person. I don't use dosing pumps or top off units. To me, it's just more to take care of and more to setup. I like as little as possible. It's not a big deal to me to dose as needed. I do a weekly 10 gallon water change in my 125. If I test and calcium is a little low, I will add the calcium crystals from BRS at an amount of 1/4 to the entire 10 gallon when I do a water change. I only do that during water changes if needed. For kalkwasser, I rarely use it but when I do, I will add it to my 1 gallon jug I keep under the tank for manual top-offs. I will go through one jug of RODI a week. I never dose magnesium but in the past I have used a tablespoon of magnesium crystals from the store....that you use to add to your bath water. For alkalinity I will dose 1 tablespoon of baking soda to the sump, as needed...rarely do I need to do this. Weekly water changes keep everything pretty much in check. glad you love the shows.

    Hi Steve,
    It's been a little while since I last made a comment on your videos but I need to tell you that yourmsump is saving your butt on this one because fresh water no matter how clean will kill your saltwater bacteria because it can't survive fresh water.
    I don't have a sump so I rely heavily on my canister filter which is a fluval 406. And I only clean it with tank water siphoned with a water change. Fresh water kills saltwater bacteria!
    second of all is a tip!
    those plastic bio balls are outdated!
    heck out the Ceramic Bio balls from Marine Pure.
    Why?
    Because Marine Pure is the best!
    on the outside of the ball you bacteria developed to handle your Ammonia and Nitrites, But,
    on the inside they will developed a third strain of bacteria which will take care of your Nitrates effectively turning it into Nitrogen gas which escapes the tank through gas exchange meaning you don't have Nitrates anymore.
    You don't have to sugar dose, vodka dose or any king of carbon dose or run Nitrate media in a reactor or canister filter. All you need is the marine pure media which has been designed with the perfect conditions for this third strain of bacteria to develope, survive and thrive.
    you can over feed your tank by feeding heavily 10 times per day and your only concern will be phosphates and water clarity. Nitrates will always be undetectable!
    The Downside is it takes 3 months for the bacteria to develop and handle your Nitrates.
    The good news is that there is nothing you can do to stop it!
    Hope this raises an eyebrow.. I know it will lol

    • @ROTTERtube
      @ROTTERtube  8 років тому

      +wombraider091 good to see you. thanks for the great tip! i'm running a canister filter because i can't afford another sump with skimmer on this quarantine tank. this is temporary while they are in quarantine and i do water changes every other day to keep ammonia and nitrates in check, while dosing cupramine. i may look at these for my main tank. where do you place them, just in a bad in the sump? i won't run any reactors...the less hardware the better for me. thanks again! i'll look at them!

    What do you do if the power gets cut off? How long before the tank livestock stars to suffer what signs to look for How to prevent that. Like a generator setup. Cheers I'm fwt but hope to get salty one day👍

    • @ROTTERtube
      @ROTTERtube  8 років тому

      +Ross Ellis a generator would be a great idea but most people don't have them. the main reason is because you need to keep the water flowing and breaking up for oxygen. when i clean this canister filter i work fast....about 10 minutes and they are totally fine. i also keep a pump running to break up the surface of the water so that helps.

    I wouldn't worry too much about rinsing with tap water. Same trace elements in their are the same as those in ocean water just in extremely trivial amounts and if you're still paranoid about it you can just rinse at the end with filtered water. I think the big culprit is chlorine because unless you have carbon it definitely has no way to be taken out.

    you can put them anywhere. even in the tank but for the best way to develop these little miracles of nature is to draw water through them and your canister filter is the best way 😉

      +wombraider091 that's a great plan. i will look into them and probably put them somewhere in my display tank. I think I will be getting rid of the sump socks because I just can't stand them. In their place, I will be using a canister filter along with my sump and protein skimmer. best of both worlds. I would much rather clean a canister filter weekly than change out nasty socks every 3 days. I will then put these ceramic guy in the canister.

    So when the filter sucks out from my fish tank, I gotta replace that salt water in the tank right because my canister is probably about a gallon I would say

    Iv two canister filters small one for sponges the big one for media and I only clean them once a month you clean them in tank water anything else will kill the Beneficial bacteria in the filters

    • @ROTTERtube
      @ROTTERtube  Рік тому

      you don't need beneficial bacteria in the canisters...that's what sand and rock is for. it's all over the glass as well. to each their own. I only use canisters for mechanical filtering nothing more.

    Can i use canister for chemical and mechanical filter?

    • @ROTTERtube

      yes you can. i only used it for mechanical and replaced the media every week. i still use it at times maybe once or twice a year for a week.

      @@ROTTERtube Thanks for the answer. Another question if you don't mind, what kind of chemical filtration do you suggest for salt water tank? Someone told me to use purigen and bioball (biological filtration). I think live rock is enough for biological

    • @ROTTERtube
      @ROTTERtube  5 років тому

      live rock is enough. i like to keep it simple. you don't need that much....i had barely any rock and it was fine. remember that bacteria lives on the walls of your tank, your sump, everywhere. bio balls can hold detritus as well. i don't use them and never would. sand also holds a TON of bacteria.

    Adding trace element is very important monthly I have gone months with no water changes. Not everyone has access to clean sea water so trace elements are very important there are certain ways to feed fish for finicky eaters etc. But I hate typing. Most important leave the system alone and don't over feed fish.

    • @ROTTERtube
      @ROTTERtube  7 років тому

      yeah Al. I never add trace elements since i do the weekly water change. i only dose a little calcium crystals since my coralline algae requires A LOT of calcium to stay around.

  • @KillerKev1961

    DONT RINSE THEM BALLS!

    • @ROTTERtube
      @ROTTERtube  5 років тому

      that's right! if you're going to use bioballs, don't rinse them. when i was using a canister filter, i just used it for filtration. i only had a lot of filter media in it and changed it out every week. i use the rock and sand for bio filtration. not to mention everything that is on the glass and the filters and the sump.

    i am planning to add canister to my saltwater tank what is your recommendation on media

    • @ROTTERtube
      @ROTTERtube  7 років тому

      i would recommend nothing but polyfoam and that is it. use it as a filter, don't use it to house bacteria. throw away the foam pads once a week during cleaning. i loaded mine with pads and that is all.

      i wouldn't use prime. you can, but i just rely on nature.

    • @ROTTERtube
      @ROTTERtube  8 років тому

      +6669bj ah, a mistake. you know why, it's because I only use the canister filter for my QT so I am not concerned about what little beneficial bacteria that's in the canister, will die. i do large water changes in the QT every other day, so I don't need to worry about bacteria growing since I rely on water changes for that.

    • @ROTTERtube
      @ROTTERtube  6 років тому

      hi Byron and welcome to the hobby. this video should show you everything you need to know. when i used a canister filter, i would use it ONLY FOR FILTERING! i don't put rubble or rock or anything in it. the only thing i would put in a canister filter is filter media. i would replace the filter media weekly. you will be able to go longer, maybe 2 weeks, if you have small fish that go to the bathroom less.

      i'm glad you didn't listen. a canister filter should be used for filtering not bacteria....that's what your rocks and sand are for. not to mention all the bacteria on the glass of your tank and all surfaces.
