A good chunk of season 1 holds up surprisingly well. The pilot is super clunky, but Diversity Day is a classic and Health Care has a ton of good jokes at Dwight's expense. Season 9 is when the show became a parody of itself, the fact that it opens with Dwight bicycling on a tight rope doomed the season from the start.
He was bicycling over the shark.
Diversity day is better than most of the post Michael Scott episodes.
I still think that Season 8 is the weakest.
I would still rather watch Season 1 over 8 or 9.
It's really only the first episode that's a mess, as it's a direct recreation of the British Office pilot. The next episodes are original and pretty good to decent.

Nellie isn’t that bad as everyone says she it. I think that warehouse worker and Andy were the worst
Andy was so much worse towards the end. He completely took advantage of Nellie's situation in the office and acted like a total douche.

Season 9 is TERRIBLE season 2 - like 5 - 6 was peak. Which is actually most of the show. Basically Michael makes the show good I guess.
Please cover the infamous first season of "Parks and Recreation", as it was clearly trying to replicate "The Office", as that was successful, right?! It wasn't until the second season that it found its feet, and we came to adore the world and its characters! 💕🌍
I read somewhere that season 2 ep 23 and beyond is when you should start to watch. And after I watched whole show I can agree. Boring love interest is gone for good, Ben and Chris Traeger come, Andy cranks up his comedy and Ron becomes a legend.
@@johnsnow04 Can't agree with that. There were a bunch of great S2 episodes before Adam Scott & Rob Lowe showed up - Pawnee Zoo, Practice Date, Greg Pikitis, Ron & Tammy, Hunting Trip, Telethon, etc.
Honestly season one isn’t bad, but compared to the other 6 it is wildly inferior. But I can still research the first season and enjoy it.

I love Parks and Rec and I think it did a way better job of starting with the tone it wanted/kept. Rather than characters totally changing their personality they ditched the dead weight Mark guy, threw Andy (who wasn’t supposed to be there for more than a few episodes) into the spotlight, and introduced Ben and Chris. Once that stuff happened I think the show really took off.
It’s not as jarring to go back to season 1 Leslie like it is with season 1 Michael Scott. But every time they go into her weird creepy hoarder nest house I’m shocked because I never remember the weird manic angle they took with her.
No way is Season 1 the worst season of The Office. Not while seasons 7 through 9 exist.
I would even argue it's better than S6.

Both The Office and Parks and Rec hit their stride once they stopped trying to be other shows.
What show was Parks and Rec trying to be?
First season of that is clunky because they were going off a different premise than what they would do later in the show.

At least the first half of season 8 has the legitimately compelling plot of Andy actually trying to be the boss while still staying true to his character, season 9 didn't even bother with that.

I always find myself super sensitive to people talking about The Office. Season One had growing pains but still had great episodes. Basketball is amazing. Nothing compares to the downfall of season 9. BEST SHOW EVER !!

The Season 9 Pam and Jim breaking up thing was brutal. As was the whole Sports Agentcy. Really hard to watch.

Great show, but not the best ever. At least in my opinion.
The honor of best show ever (regarding sitcoms, at least) would have to go to "Roseanne". A close 2nd place would be "Cheers".
But "The Office" is 100% in my top 5.

Funny you say they are like “live action cartoon characters” bc that is where Greg Daniels got his start with the Simpsons and King of the Hill. In one of The Office books I read that Greg Daniels wanted Rainn Wilson to “kick himself in his own crotch” and everyone was like “that isn’t possibly he isn’t a cartoon character” 😂😂

Idk, I feel like this criticism really only applies to the pilot. The rest of the season is decent, if anything it feels like a lesser season 2. Season 8 just outright sucks.

While season 1 wasn’t great season 8 and especially 9 were kinda bad. Season 8 was the least funniest season imo and towards the end it rly changed everything the show used to be. I think season 9 was a bit funnier overall but it was totally unrealistic on many occasions and the drama w Jim and Pam and Oscar and Angela just made the season all over the place and not enjoyable.

It’s actually pretty normal for the first season of shows to be weird, even it’s always sunny had a first season that doesn’t fit 100% with the other seasons. I usually skip the first season on rewatches of most shows.
First season tone is relaxing and homey. I really like it for its subdue nature. It reminds me of the first season of Seinfeld on how different it is to the rest of the series
Diversity Day and Hot Girl are HILARIOUS.
The first season is why I gave up on it several times, and now that my friend convinced me to get through it, I've grown to enjoy it a lot.
After growing up on The UK Office (living in the UK), and then watching the 1st episode of the US Office, it was painful to watch. However it grew into a series that (in my opinion) surpassed the UK version.
I mean, it was bad, but watching the US series of the Inbetweeners was akin to pouring vinegar into an open wound, compared to the UK version
The first season was like an endless montage of awkward moments.
Season 1 has Classic yea a few characters still had no build but it would develop over time. Season 8 and 9 I have to say we’re weak I did like Robert California. But Andy as branch manager was to cringe. That whole Erin love line was annoying. Compared to Jim and Pam that chemistry was amazing and Dwight and Angela felt organic. Erin and Andy was being shoved down our throats and Gabe was just lame I’m sorry maybe not popular but Gabe was not funny or anything. Season 1-7 classics.

It took me YEEEEEARS to watch the office bc of season 1. My friends kept telling me “you HAVE to watch it” but I like watching tv series in order and not skipping and I would always lose interest during episode 3 then one magically time I made it through season 1 and I was hooked. And I agree with the commenters - now I would rather watch season 1 then season 8&9
Greg Daniels said NBC demanded the pilot be a carbon-copy of the UK pilot, almost word-for-word. The only way they’d green light it was if they followed the same formula. They felt “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”
It's been so long since I watched the first season- but I think it completely makes sense to be more opposed to it just trying to copy the UK show than when it fails in the later seasons because at least then it's still trying to do it's own thing.
I have a huge soft spot for that James Spader season. I wish they had been more consistent with how they used his character as a whole but that Halloween episode with him is still one of my all time favourites.
Anyway great work as usual Vee, your editing timing with these videos gets better and better as you keep posting and I've been really loving all your sitcom posts.
I remember the big change for me the Halloween episode where Michael had to fire someone.

Aside from the pilot episode, Season 1 wasn't bad. I loved the Hot Girl episode and the Basketball episode. Season 8 and 9 were awful and Nellie was the worst thing to happen to the entire series. She was worse than Randy from That 70's Show. Randy was lame and annoying, but Nellie made me furious, especially when she strolls in and steals Andy's job and nobody does anything about it. She nearly ruined the entire series for me.
Best part about these vids is that they don't have the cringe theme song that his other videos do.

My only problem with season 1 is Michael Scott, he is a little to dislikable to be root for.

You're right. And it's not just the writing. There are even little details, such as Michael's hairstyle. Also, the scenes in S1 were shot to look like it was all real. As the show went on, although it was still supposed to be a documentary, there was more light and colors, and the camera movements and editing were faster.
There is also a german "The Office" called "Stromberg" !

I’m british and I hate the U.K. Office, it’s so bleak and depressing there’s no joy to be found in it all you’re doing is watching a bunch of bored people slowly wasting their lives away in a job they hate as their cringe as hell boss tries to be their friend
although some of the seasons were rougher than others, the show is absolutely fantastic. i just made a jim and pam symbolic edit on my channel if y'all wanna go check it out, if not that's ok too :)

Best decision the office made was to make micheal scott likeable and taylor made him to be more like steve carrell.
Season 1 was very hard to finish, many viewers gave up on this gem bc of that
Season 1 was grounded in reality. They used less makeup on the actors, and the acting was more realistic. The story revolved around everyday office topics like health insurance, who would work on Saturday, downsizing, etc. In contrast, seasons 8 and 9 had episodes like the lice episode, Dwight riding a bicycle on top of a rope, and an entire episode set on Schrute Farms.
Season 1 has some great stuff that really works and sticks, and I truly love watching it and think it fits in very well, but I agree with the “easier to watch the last season than the first” simply because the first season punches HARD with the uncomfortable awkward cringe humor.
Season 1 of The Office feels kinda like Days Like These, trying to hard to replicate it's source material.

The office UK was planned to last 2 seasons, Ricky Gervais and Steven Marchant weren't interested in continuing it after the second season, since the story was wrapped up by then.
You should examine the t.v. series "Doc Martin." I believe that you would find the growth and changes quite interesting.

Bro, I'm not trying to be an asshole here, but to all the British people saying it didn't work because it wad trying to adapt British humor, UK humor is not unique, there is ten of millions of Americans with the same dry humor. I don't understand UK people talking about how Americans don't understand their humor.
I love dry humor with a nice structured joke. But man the British office sucks.
The "issue" is that Americans cannot laugh at passive suffering (or submissive suffering) of the undeserving... And that is what British humour tends to be (or at least, was). (As a sidenote, I am neither British or American.) Americans tend to find such material to be either boring or mean-spirited.
If you were to ask for a positive English sitcom, I probably couldn't give many/any to you.

I don't like saying season 1 of a lot of shows was the worst, simply due to most shows still trying to find their footing at that time. They need to evolve and understand their characters more.
I don't understand why season 1 get so much flack. Most people first season is trying to get it footing. Look how terrible Seinfeld first season was. Let shows get their footing then take them off the air after the second season. Diversity day and Health Care was hilarious.

Dude I totally agree with you. The first season is just so awkward and uncomfortably awkward at times. I know a lot of people would disagree with this but I don't like most British humor and it doesn't translate well to American humor.

Office UK is a dry show that I didn’t care for!
I thought Season 1 was hilarious, but I'm glad the writers and producers evolved and gave the characters more life.
Something to add is that Steve Carell's role as Andy in The 40 Year Old Virgin is part of the reason that the show continued. Jenna Fischer played an extra in the movie, while Mindy Kaling played a side character (ex girlfriend of Paul Rudd's character). Also (and this is speculation), warm reception to Steve Carell playing a loveable goof may have inspired changes to Michael, though he still kept some of the original characterization of Season 1 Michael Scott. Michael was more like Brick Tamland, another fan favorite from Anchorman
It's probably why Steve Carell was sort of typecast for a bit in some of his movie roles during his run as Michael Scott

They changed a "Senfield style" comedy in a "Friends style" one.
I loved season 1. It was more like a critic to the work enviroment with more acid moments and no happy or educational endings.
Literally the only thing we care as an audience is the Jim and Pam relation because in most cases all the work environments are grey and most people hate their jobs like a life sentence in prison. That J&P relationship is the only sort of things we can aspire in most work environments.
The reason i loved the show was because the silly or dumb "american style" sitcom was performed in a great way until season 7. The office loses protagonism and became just the common place for characters and the "documentary" idea was took behind to give place to a normal history with characters development in time.
The problem with adapting UK shows for the US, and vise versa is a lot of things do not travel well due to culture issues. Even the use of the word taffy can have problems here in the UK.
How about fanny meaning vagina in UK and meaning butt in US, that one gets confusing

I actually agree with you, I started watching the show for the first time last year and I watched a couple of episodes before deciding to just skip to season 2... would you be willing to do an analysis like this for season 1 of Parks and Rec? Cause what's more baffling to me is that after they had to reinvent Michael Scott from the ground up for The Office they would make the same mistake with Leslie Knope...
I cant agree that this is the worst season. I think later seasons were worse. But season 1 was interesting and I actually like it. By the end of the series everyone literally becomes a caricatures of themselves

As a first time viewer I had a hard time enjoying the first episode, should I skip season 1 or try and power through?
I’d say start with Season 2. By time you’re done with the series, you’ll have more of a fondness and appreciation for Season 1

I thought Community was still good, but there's enough people who didn't enjoy it and even hated it. The whole Yahoo! TV fiasco doesn't help Season 6's reputation either.
The Bernie Mac Show, Everybody Hates Chris, and Wilfred were still good, but those were 5, 4, and 4 seasons, respectively.
Malcolm in the MIddle, in my opinion, was still good in its 7th and final season, but there were changes made like The Office. Malcolm wasn't as endearing as the previous seasons, and they bungled Francis' character
The problem was the American office just can’t pull off the British office humour, it’s just that simple.
Hollywood as a whole cannot pull of British humour. (I'm neither American or British.) Also, man does America extend British t.v. shows... If a series like "Doc Martin" was Americanised, the show would never end. In America's defence, Australia (my country) tried to Australise "Doc Martin." It was the similar concept but was swamped with Australia cliches.
Despite that (the Australian) "Doctor Doctor" was an alright show to watch.
I feel like your logic about the British version of the Office having only 2 seasons is kind of unwarranted. If I’ve gotten anything from Community, UK series usually don’t overstay their welcome and generally give closure in a way that the US Series just cannot sometimes. If I’m wrong then I apologise once again I got that from an episode of community…
The color of the way the filmed season one looks dark, not bright colors like the other seasons
Usually the first season of any series is one of the weaker ones as the show needs time to grow & find itself. Even shows like: Ninja Turtles, Teen Titans, and Avatar (both Last Airbender & Korra)
It was certainly so for the English series "Doc Martin." The writing was good but one or two characters were too unlikable from the beginning. Unsurprisingly, one of those actors soon left. My apologies if you have no idea what "Doc Martin" is. It was a English "negative comedy." Like the English "The Office."

I gonna get so much hate for this but I've seen Season 8 and 9 over like 4 times that I practically have them memorized. They're the only seasons I'll watch.
I've tried (and failed) multiple times to watch the first season of the US office but I just can't get through it. When the show becomes similar in name only to the UK version and finds its feet it's so much better. So now I rewatch it I just skip the first season all together. Also when Michael leaves it gets pretty hard to watch at points for me but it's a lot better than the first season.
I have probably finished the U.S. office about 6 times now. i tried watching the UK office and i could barely finish the first episode.
Weird lighting and Michael's hair are the only two things wrong with season 1.
Maybe season 1 can be seen as like the Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie is to the TV show. Its overall events are canon, but the characterization and aesthetic is just... off.

I freaking love the second episode diversity day lol me and my best friend about jumped off the couch when Michael gets slapped from Kelly.
Basketball was an excellent episode as well, healthcare definitely got plenty of laughs out of me. I even found the pilot decently funny. The first season is hands-down way easier to watch the last two seasons.
Keep in mind I’m only 25 now.
I honestly didn’t really get into the show until around three years ago.
Meaning I obviously wasn’t the target age of when the show started in 2004 I was but a child back then.
