Old youtube was better because youtubers could be more creative, they didn't have the thought in the back of their mind like "will this get copyrighted/demonetised"
they had more freedom to be creative. And i also think youtube videos felt more simple and i've always preferred that, luved just watching people hop on a game and have fun with their friends or by themselves doing a lets play

i think the charm of old youtube was that people just made videos to have fun, and show off their sometimes ordinary lives to the world, like just recording you and your friends and putting it up for views on youtube. but now these days, people are LIVING off of youtube, and it feels a lot more like a competitive scene, that you have to be interesting and have high production value for views, rather than just fun, home-made content like it used to be much earlier on.

UA-cam (next to old flash-game sites and imageboards) felt like the only video site that was made from the ground-up by its actual users and content sub-cultures, and not created by a boardroom of people out of touch with what they think kids think is funny but feeding it to us (like 2010s Nickolodeon.) Some moral standards have been accepted because of it.

I would actually say that UA-cam had 3 phases: early UA-cam (2005-2009), mid UA-cam: (2010-2015) and late UA-cam (2016 onwards). I feel as though those periods all had different vibes.

Old UA-cam to me is Smosh, Ryan Higa, Liam Kyle Sullivan, What the Buck, and Potter Puppet Pals. Despite the hyper-commercialization of new UA-cam, I still prefer it to old UA-cam. Speaking as someone who just started doing UA-cam this year, I would definitely say old UA-cam was better. I feel back then, creators thought of it as more of a fun hobby rather than their actual career. Not saying that anyone who views UA-cam as a career is wrong, but it can be easy to suffer burnout from doing UA-cam on a daily basis. Nowadays, it's very difficult to get a lot of traction on content unless you know the in's and out's of the algorithm. This isn't as easy a question for me to answer, because my definition of "Old UA-cam" is different than other people's. I never really watched Shane, Pewds, Higa, or any of them, because I was never seeking out specific creators, but specific content. Think Half Life: Full Life Consequences or Red vs Blue (before it became the Big Bang Theory of Machinias)
My feeling is that Old UA-cam is better if it was content that you could come back to, content that has aged well. Newer UA-cam may be a bit more sanitized in terms of creativity, but there's still enough for me to consume because now I seek out specific creators.

Old UA-cam will always be better because we weren't as obsessed with aesthetics and it was more for fun back then and there weren't as many ads and as many annoying, fake influencers as there are now.
I think UA-cam sucks now just with how many damn videos are sponsored. If they are built into the video in a way that is NORMAL and sounds genuine it's different, but now half the ads are annoying. IDC if it is. how they make money, they could take sponsorships that actually are genuine and not fake like Danielle Carolan's are now. She started out genuine and relatable and now she is just another "rich" girl that lives in NYC. And promotes shit companies like Revolve that aren't even slightly affordable on top of that, you can tell she doesn't actually use half the products she promotes.

I'm kinda in the middle tbh. On one hand you have old UA-cam where people were just making what they wanna make and just getting to be themselves, however it was riddled with sexism, transphobia, homophobia, racism etc. Nowadays UA-cam has better systems in place to keep people safe and to slow the spread of bigotry, but a lot of todays youtubers, if they weren't already on the platform for some time, seem a lot less genuine and seem more in it for the money than the joy of making content. While there is absolutely nothing wrong with making money via an online presence, it just really sucks that a lot of people are only in it for the fame and money and not just for the sake of entertaining.
Edit: Forgot to mention that a lot of the bigotry on UA-cam resides within UA-cam shorts, it does not seem to be very monitored

I really like new youtube much better! Yeah, I miss the days of 2013 when youtubers were new to me and the communities felt more tight knit. BUT I've found that in things like the Hermitcraft fandom or anime youtubers, so that tight knit youtube community is still out there. But it may be more niche. I will say I do LOVE how it's easier to come across high quality informational and educational videos with the video essay boom. Yeah, not all of them are great. But 99% of the ones I've stumbled across have been really informational or neat and through provoking!

Remember when they used to watch VEVO UA-cam and you would be watching it in like dark mode.

My biggest complain with current UA-cam is that through the years they really listened to complaints and feedback for features that people wanted, like being able to get off the app without cutting the video. Then instead of making those things a regular feature to better the experience they took them all and put them behind a paywall.
