I started welding with a Clarke 150 turbo blue one . I used to buy the co2 bottles what machine mart sell with extra gas in . Welded great . Only used one argon mix once . Couldn't get on with it found the metal you was welding had to be like new . Also they didn't last long the small bottles . I still use the welder . Had it over 10 years . But I now have a 14 pound bottle . I got for £65 and cost £20 to refill . It lasts age's and has saved me some money in the long run . Yes the gasless flux wire is rubbish . Used once never again . love your videos by the way
Yes, looking at the comments, I think it's better to go for the larger bottle set up so i'll be looking into that. Thanks for the info bud and glad you are enjoying the vids. Cheers Martin
Martin there is a tractor place near you that supply's the hobby weld bottles. They are quite large bottles , I forget the size now but I welded a bracket on the back of my trolley that the welder sits on. The regulator is about 30 quid on eBay. The initial outlay is around 90 quid for the bottle as it includes the initial bottle rental charge. I do loads of welding on cars and the bottle will last around 2 to 3 hours of continuous welding 😀
Nice to see you back in action Martin. I thought that there must have been something up with you. Have a great birthday next week - maybe Sharon will let you put your feet up for the day!
hi mate glad to hear he's doing well and busy I would suggest you use in hobby gas for your mig and get a decent regulator you don't have to rent them and they are great and will save you a fortune in the long run
Good to see another video from you Martin and I'm glad you're feeling better. Myself and others I know have had similar symptoms to yourself. The worst part of this virus is that it takes an age to completely clear. Keep the videos coming, hope we get to see you working on the Reliant soon and an update on the Triumph acclaim.
Hi Martin, that soap trick reminded me of my old lpg gas hob, it sprung a leak I tried the bubble trick but I couldn't locate it but could definitely smell the gas, so I Called my m8 who is an old school plumber and guess what he used.........yep his 🚬 cigarette lighter lol...he actually found the leak without 💀 blowing himself or my house up, keep the vids coming and stay lucky me old mucker 👍🏻
Hi Martin . Pleased to see you you on the mend. The Vics on the feet must have helped. The soapy water trick is a good one , works well on lots of things , have used it on 2 stroke motors see if they are leaking past the seals etc. Just one thing i want to see your dinner on facebook next week. Cheers Pete.
Great video Martin, you really need a bigger bottle for your mig welder those small are a waste of time used to use them myself. Good job finding the leak. Great news about Jimmy getting lots of work, if people have seen your videos on bodywork they know they will be getting a good job done by genuine people and at a fair price too. Keep the great vids coming Martin always a pleasure to watch. Cheers, Jeff.
I have the same problem Martin, went too see the doc and it's just a viral infection apparently that will clear up on it's own I'm into my 4th week and it's only now starting too clear up it seems to be the season for it as everyone i know seems to be going down with it, i too have exactly the same welder as you too Martin but I've not experienced any gas leaking issues (as far as i am aware of!) what i always do though is unscrew the gas regulator after I'm finished with the machine because i wouldn't be at all surprised if they let by gas, another thing i do which helps not over use too much gas is i brought a gas flow meter off eBay it's like a ball bearing in a glass tube and you can measure how many litres per minute of gas you are using (you only need 3 - 5 litres / min) and i found out that if i open the gas regulator fully i was using 15 litres per minute which is far too much and it's just wasting gas, also you have a join in your gas line because at the back of your machine the gas hose is clear and inside the torch the gas hose is black, mine is a clear hose that runs all the way through the machine with no joins
I'm in the 5th week now Arron and it's finally nearly gone. What A pain though. I've now bought the hobbyweld gas and regulator with a flow meter and i'll be doing a vid on this. Yes there was a join. It had a new tube last year. It's a good enough welder for what I use it for though. Cheers Martin
I bought a Clark air compressor and the air was leaking where the hose screws on to the compressor so what I did is put some PTFE tape round the screw thread and that fixed it so I think if you put some PTEF tape on the glass bottle tread just be on the safe side
I've found those bottles would last quite a while, but as mentioned, if I didn't remove the regulator when not in use the gas bottle would empty. However, this would be over a couple of days and not hours. I've since replaced that welder, but still disconnect the regulator when I am not using it (even for a short time).
good vid Martin, them small bottles are no good they don't last any time at all. I use a hobby weld bottle and a small Argoshield lite from BOC. while your replacing the gas hose, its a good idea to replace the wire liner as well and they are not expensive. if you don't do a lot of welding take the reel of wire off and keep it in a poly bag cos they rust up thro time if not used for a while. you can get a peashooter regulator which you hold on the end of the torch and it will tell you what rate the gas is flowing at. ideally for your brackets you only need it going about 3/5 lts per minute. keep up the good work cheers. Willie
You must have read my mind Willie. I've just gone out today and bought a hobbyweld bottle and regulator so i'll be doing a vid on this soon. As you said, it's the only way to go. Cheers Martin
Martin, Good to see you back on youtube! Nice catch on the gas leak. Like someone said a better regulator with gauges delivery & content is the way to go and it will help you a lot with the welding. Take care David
Good to see you again Martin,my welder is exactly the same with the gas.i just thought the bottles were crap lol,I'll test mine now. Good vid mate and great to see jimmys business going well. Scott
At least I know there was a leak Scott, i'm gonna get the Hobby Weld Gas bottle and a new regulator as many people have suggested. These bottles are not very good. Cheers Martin
Martin try the food supplement Turmeric (its a spice used in indian food) Ive been tacking 4000 mg a day and that bug can not get a hold on me . cheers good video Big Rob
I phoned them up to see if they had one in, They said yes so I went down to pick it up. The chap on the counter went and got it and I paid. I got it home and went to fit it and he had given me a wire feed tube instead of a gas tube. I phoned up and told them and they now said that they don't stock this tube. Bloody sales men.
What a bugger? It looks like standard air hose from fish tanks like 4/5mm you may be able to get a small coupler or rubber hose you can join the two up where the leak is?
Hey Martin, great to see another video of yours, always look forward to seeing them.. will you be doing one over Christmas with the family etc, love seeing those.. hope your on the mend and hope you have a great birthday.. I'll start pushing your videos out :).. All the best and if I don't say it in the next video, have a 'ruddy' good crimbo - Mark
53 next week. are you sure you havnt been running around with the speedo disconnected for a while haha. Nice to see another video Martin. Been watching your Mondeo DMF vids as mine is starting to rattle a bit.
YAY! A new video. I was thinking with the new shop, you are too busy to make a video. How about a Rant Video? I need a good rant. Facebook sucks. It's all bullshit for an average guy like myself, nothing to sell, nothing I want on FB. They actually target you with ads. You must give your phone number when subscribing and when you do that, a few days later India calls with Fantastic news, You've won a Caribbean Boat Cruise, Ducts Cleaning offers and my favorite, Your PC is infected with viruses. NO THANKS. At the start of the video, bottom right are 2 storage units. I see the drawers, do you know where The Man With The Hat on YT can locate a few of the drawers? He has his dads unit that is missing a few. I know you are out looking in shops, car boot sales. If you see some, give him a shout. Great guy, always returns comments.
Yes, I know what you mean about Facebook Bri but I just use it for business really and it works for us. Man with the hat, i'll take a look. not heard of that channel. Cheers Martin
buy a high low regulator run it on a pub bottle clarke welders loose gas if you dont disconnect bottles but the best hobby welder is the 90EN if you dont use it disconnect the bottle if you use a pub bottle on its neck it as a shut of valve clarke bottles dont you can buy a new welder from clarke it will do the same
Hi Mart, I know you've already found the leak but you really need to buy a gas flow meter (peashooter) as with your current setup, you've got no idea how fast the gas flow is. You only need the standard 3 litres per minute for indoor welding. Despite the leak, you will be wasting loads of gas as the regulator is opened too far. Peashooters cost FA on eBay. See this video: ua-cam.com/video/krJPXELysuI/v-deo.html
You're welcome bud. As a rule of thumb...you use gas/normal wire for indoor welding and then change over to no gas/flux core wire for outdoor welding. Reason being the wind outdoors will blow the gas away from the nozzle resulting in a bad weld. Of course you can use flux core for indoors as well but you get slag and increased spatter with flux core wire. Disposable bottles are good if you're only doing a small amount of indoor welding and it's setup right (with a peashooter). A hobby weld bottle & a regulator cost about £100 all in which could be overkill but Jimmy might end up using it anyway. It's all horses for courses
Well done Mate!! I've had a Clarke 135 that has served me well for the past 8 years!! I don't even think they sell them over here anymore!!☺
Good to know they last pretty well and i'm gonna upgrade to a larger gas bottle and regulator I think.
Cheers

I've been removing the regulator from the bottle as well.
I always shut off the gas, in between use. Good tips on finding the leak.
Hello Martin
you can buy the Gasless wire with the flux built in ,it might be worth giving it a try to see if you get on with it
I've heard it's not as good as with the gas Phil.
Martin there is a tractor place near you that supply's the hobby weld bottles. Nice work finding the leak Martin. Did you manage to get a replacement hose in the end for it from machine mart?
I phoned them up to see if they had one in, They said yes so I went down to pick it up. The chap on the counter went and got it and I paid. I got it home and went to fit it and he had given me a wire feed tube instead of a gas tube. I phoned up and told them and they now said that they don't stock this tube. Bloody sales men.

Yes, someone pointed one out for me so i'll be doing that first.
Our pastor has had the same thing here in MN.
It's everywhere George, Unusual for a bug to last a month I think.

Why don't you get a hobby weld bottle, mine cost me £100 at first that's lifetime rental and the bottle full. Then 30 odd pound every refill.
Yes, I've only just found out about this. It seems the way to go.
Cheers
Martin
retrorestore Well worth it in the long run, it does seen like a big out lay at first, but it would be handy for the unit too.
have same welder, it was the connection to the reg valve. v
Yes, they seem quite a cheap valve.

Slightly different than mine Bri, remember those ones in engineering workshops though.
Thought you might have seen some in your travels from Auction houses or boot sales.
I may have done, i'll keep a look out.

Yes, i'm going to get the hobbyweld set up soon.

Martin Andy K
don't open the gas bottle fully, you only really need to just crack it open, anymore is a waste of gas
Thanks Mick, i'm going the get a flow meter as well.
