It's almost to the day that I saw your video of Raimis bringing the live hawk chick to Milda's nest. No matter how many seasons we watch these amazing raptors and know it's part of the survival lessons for the Eaglets, it will always be sad to see. RIP little hawks, learn the lessons taught DN eaglets.
Hello Nature you know I was thinking of that today too. It was so horrific to watch that last year and now here we are and it happens again. I think we all have hope that sometimes a hawklet will survive after seeing that happen in the Vancouver nest a few years ago but in reality I think that was more the exception than the rule. It never gets easier to watch it. RIP little warrior hawklet!!
It's OK, that's not a big deal, hawks lays 1 to 5 eggs every year so I m sure that hawk that lost the 2 chick's will start another family next mating season.
Very hard to watch for me especially because I lost a Red-shouldered Hawk nest of at least 2 due to severe wind rain thunder and lightning but I think it was the wind which took the nest tree down just below where the nest was. I just discovered all this in the morning and it was heartbreaking for me and for the parents because they lost last years brood also. I need to speak to the home owner to see if by some miracle there are survivors.
its sad to know that these hawklets will just become pellets that are cast out of the butts of the eaglets. Its hard watching DNF ripping chunks out of a hawklet. The part that got me was 8:10 - where DN13 is struggling to swallow the hawklet's entire left leg/foot. But I suppose this is not that different from humans rolling up to the local kfc and ordering/consuming a set of chicken tenders with fries. I don't feel sad anymore when seeing videos of hawks/goshawks raiding and carrying away eaglets to do the same thing. sigh... the beauty of Nature.
Yes the parents of a bald eagle chick that dies on the nest will often consume the deceased chick. I do not know in the wild if a bald eagle that finds another eagle dead would eat it. I would think that they would because it is viewed as prey and not as another eagle.
Nobody is getting justice and nobody is paying a price. This is nature where each fight for their own survival and it is insensitive to view or wish the death of another living creature as “deserved”.
Dad Eagle may have viewed the hawk chicks as offspring, whereas Mom Eagle viewed them as prey. Rest in peace sweet baby hawk chicks!
