  • We converted the Harbor Freight Sandblasting Cabinet into a DIY vapor blasting cabinet. We'll be able to restore all our car parts for our BMW e30 and Datsun 510 project builds by using water vapor and glass bead media. We're also using a 3d printed vapor blasting gun by Victor Bared victor-bared.m...

Test run 👍 I think we’re going to need a higher cfm air compressor. 4 cfm @ 60psi isn’t cutting it.

@@Itsallaboutthebuild That is always the problem! To sum up: depends on the nozzle size you want to use.
Rule of thumb with compressors is 1hp=~4cfm
Reciprocating compressors are only good up to about 8 HP. Anything above that, I'd recommend a rotary screw. Ingersoll-Rand, Quincy, and Kaeser all make good stuff. Newer rotary screw air compressors have lots of industrial automation widgets that can save you a lot on electricity.

@@Itsallaboutthebuild I currently use a beefed up, heavily modified 8hp gas powered recip compressor. Got it for 500 bucks from FB marketplace, beggars can't be choosers. I needed it to be portable for onsite cemetery engravings.
Word to the wise: double check available power types with the compressor you want to buy. I once got a used 460v 3 phase compressor for a jobsite that only had 240v 1 phase. 🤦‍♂️
Also use appropriate gauge wires and fuses. If you size fuses too small, you'll be resetting them constantly throughout the work day

@@Itsallaboutthebuild Yes. The air fitting it comes with is only .199 in. diameter. Replace it with a high-flow fitting (still 1/4” MPT), which has a .323 diameter, a 164% increase, and it works very well (assuming you can provide 90 psi from your compressor at the increased flow rate.

The reason I ask is that I watch this rebuild rescue youtube channel where they rebuild airplanes and they vapor blast the plane with no cabinet. It is completely dry ice. It all just sublimates and nothing is left behind. Pretty cool system, but super expensive. Actually, they call it vapor honing for one... ua-cam.com/users/shortsaFQ17acY1F8 and dry ice blasting for another ua-cam.com/video/r6MHy2NCuWg/v-deo.html I am pretty sure they called it vapor blasting at one point, but it is dry ice blaster from Cold Jet.
