  • do i really need to thin fruit from my trees? yes! why? because it can damage the tree in a number of ways and it can make your fruit smaller, thinning makes fruit bigger and better!
    how to I do that? watch and find out!

    And this is why you have multiple fruits in your orchard. Some years you just won't get fruit from some trees.
    Another reason to thin in my location is the fruit rubbing together facilitates and encourages damage and rot.
    Last year was a banner year for apples but I got no pears and only a handful of peaches. This year, the peaches and pears are outstanding and I have 1, yes just 1, apple. I'm also on the verge of losing one pear and apple tree to fire blight. It came in with a vengeance this year and the young trees aren't standing a chance with this extreme heat and drought

      I think we are both in agreement that each year is getting weirder and more challenging. sorry you are about to loose trees. Hard to nurse something along and then lose it.

      The last few years I've tried to put off thinning until the "June Drop" and branches keep snapping. I've learned my lesson, I need to do it sooner!

    Woo hoo, found mouse melons along the fence again and spreading. Maybe will be ripe starting 1-2 weeks. Cute little things. Never had them before a couple years ago so must have been planted by birds.
    Bought new pots to get the now wild blackberries started. So happy to have found mine again.
    Things were going on so didn't get to the pecans soon enough and the constant rains have rotted them this year. None left in the freezer.
    We had an invasive weed that that has taken over the yard killing most of the St. Augustine grass. Yes, put out weed and feed but it's feeding and not weeding. Hoping some garlic and wild onion come back. Worried why the honeysuckle hasn't bloomed this summer. Anyway, that's the natural edibles in the backyard. There is cactus down the road but people are getting rid of it.

    More bone meal under the apple tree from the trunk to the drip line perhaps . More bio char and wood ash as well when just coming out of being dormant . Taking off some apples helps as well . I have noticed that when apple trees have access to the wood ash and bone meal helps with weakness . All so a water source near by that the roots can reach helps a great deal ! . Ya peaches are a hit or miss with the weather . This may get me some boos but when i see fruit trees unpruned from the very beginning of planting they give the best production . Cleaning off the dead is a for sure . I lost my apricot blooms due to cold ! Great channel you have and i hope this info finds you well . Cheers fellow earthling

      Howie! glad to see you are still around keeping us Earthlings in line. I'll look into bone meal. I'm already a user of hard wood ash (and urine mixed as fertilizer) so that makes sense to me. That branch was just too damn heavy...my own fault... Live and learn. ☮

    Do you spray/treat your fruit trees? We used to have several but never treated them so the fruit wasn't really great quality, but that wasn't why we enjoyed the trees, so we just let them do their thing. Thanks for all the tips!

      I'm an organic gardener, that said if I have to spray I will. I do not spray for bugs, I have sprayed the peach trees with Copper Fungicide to kill leaf curl (that's a constant battle) but otherwise i've never sprayed. I just prune and collect fruit, for sure these tree's have paid for themelves many times over. Infact I'm going to dry some plums later toda (in the sun) for long term storage.

      @@OldSchoolPrepper Thanks for the reply -- I didn't know you had plums! We've just got a couple of rough-looking pear trees left. I found the original blueprints when our house was built in the '50s and the original landscaping plan was to basically have a mini-grove in the backyard, with cherry, apple, and pear trees all over. My dad had the cherry trees cut down when we moved in so he could enjoy the long backyard but we kept the other ones for years, just didn't maintain them all that well. We planted a crabapple this year and two willows to try to redeem ourselves!

      great question, i'm trying to come up with a list myself. Of course ACV, home made pectin (for thickening), animal feed (deer/bear/livestock. people who really like tart do cook with them...adding in extra sugar. Do you have any ideas to add to the list?

      @vickenator 2 місяці тому

      @ymamama5610 Sometimes hunters would like to take them for their deer hunts; OSP mentions below that they can be used for animal feed. A local hunter used to stop by my mom's place often to grab the rotted ones off the ground before he went off on a deer hunt.
