The Metro Cab built at Washwood Heath alongside the Metrobus,Metroliner and Metrorider. Next door at Metro Cammell London Underground trains were being built.
I wouldn't trust anyone called "Dennis Poore" with my money...
And here we are in 2022 still having the same conversation about delayed projects ie crossrail its all a big game isn't it 🙄
I wonder how many billions have been wasted on all these projects in the last few decades..
It didn't come it till what 85 86 and it wasn't that popular.

Why they didnt free the market and allowed ordinary cars to be used, as is the case in other countries?

The black cab (Hackney Carriage) is a design classic. Preferable to travelling in any other type of cab, especially sliding door ones.
It's horrible to travel in. But yes, the exterior was spot on when it was launched.

By 1986 the very concept of a purpose-built taxi was obsolete and the efforts would've been better put towards modifying a minivan or some other production vehicle.

It did in London, thousands of them, still see them now occasionally, now de-licenced obviously.
This new one looks like Range Rover.
That’s because LTI was supposed to use modified Range Rover bodies for the new cab.

Uber fares are not regulated as are the black cab fares which are over seen by TFL. Uber have started to use an on peak and off peak fare structure much like the trains. Also Uber are not hail and ride but private hire and their fares are rising to cover costs of losing UK Supreme Court rulings regarding status of drivers.
