The game is just to symbolize reality with how you are given instructions on what to do and to follow them perfectly will unlock something in game for you. But nothing short is acceptable. That is why it changed from standard game commands that are already impossible to listing all the things expected in life.

When playing a video game, the further you go without messing up, the harder the game becomes, and while you're happy that you're doing well, the game becomes faster, more complicated, and harder to keep up with. So while you're glad you've come so far, you're also more worried about losing, as you have more to lose, and it's easier to lose.
The same applies to life. Hence why the Madness increases with Happiness.
I think this song is likening video games to life in that regard. That the more successful and further into life you are, the more stress and complications come along with your happiness.

My interpretation: The girl in the song is feeling extremely pressured by society. Parents and teachers tell her that she can gain "happiness" by doing things like getting high grades and finding a good job. However, a lot of their expectations for her are too high. She feels like she has to please everyone and do what they say 24/7 in order to achieve "happiness". Whenever she does something wrong, it makes her think that she is stupid. Even if she does it right, it won't change anything, and she'll still be stuck acting as a slave for others.
Nobody ever tries to really help her with her stress, instead simply saying that she can totally do it all by herself, and that she doesn't need to ask others for help. Along with this, she is also socially awkward. She feels self-conscious about her appearance (hence her desire to become "sexier") and just feels confused about the concepts of love and friends.
The world around her remains completely oblivious to how stressed-out and hopeless she feels. She keeps trying to please everyone, but eventually gets so stressed that she kills herself.

friendlytigeress I think the only thing that I think that should be changed about your meaning is the third sentence where the expectations are high. I think that the first part about the parents and teachers telling her she can gain 'happiness' is right but I think instead of the expectations being too high it just raises her stress level even more and like you said nobody tries to help with her stress so it ends with her killing herself.

The truth
the thing is, this is real and happens to many teens, especially with mental health conditions.
I know how it feels, I have ADHD and am on the autism spectrum, so I tend to get overwhelmed easily.
When I have 3 or more homework assignments to do, I get overwhelmed, and my mind loses its sense of reason. Expectations take over, and I feel like I have to do it all in one go, with no breaks, and it has to be perfect.
This causes me stress, so I play games to relive that stress. But my brain is telling me "Your being lazy, what a disappointment." which causes me to try to work again, and then it repeats.
I enter a downward spiral, and it continues until I start to have a mental breakdown.
And when other people see somebody in a mental breakdown without knowing about their mental condition, they would just think that the person is faking it for attention.
It's a sad truth in the world...
Damn, that’s deep. I have both autism and adhd as well and struggle with the same things. Even if the people I’m around are generally positive towards me, what’s going on in my brain is completely different. I like to imagine 2:19, the positive voice is the people I have in my life, but the negative voice is the bad thoughts in my head. Because that’s honestly how it feels sometimes.
Exactly this. I have the same conditions and similar issues, but when I present why I’m struggling, people just look and say “Doesn’t matter, just get it done.” And “You just have to do it.”
It’s maddening and sickening, the way they make people of us seem like we’re ‘just lazy’, but I remember constantly badgering my parents to let me get a part time job at 11 that’s how much I was putting effort into life (I saw my parents struggling, and I wanted to be able to save and take some of the burden off. Obviously, the answer was no.)
They’re like driveby gawkers at an accident scene. They want to ‘see what’s going on over here’ but they don’t actually help whatever’s going on, and sometimes they’ll even form a scenerio in their heads to laugh and mock the people suffering the accident. It’s insanity.

Do you have a job? How much do you earn/h? Are you married? Is your wife sexy and caring? Is your husband a rich man? Are your children ones you can be proud of? How many likes you get per post in social networks? How many people follow you there? And so on.
Society tries to make you think that game of life is a racing-type game. You have to achieve %thingname%! You cannot just %actionname%! You have to be better than %humanname%! That's why girl in video tries to achieve this and that in her game, but fails. She tries to do it again, because society tells her that things she achieves should make her happy. But they don't, you can see her face when she goes well with 2k+ "Happiness". No, everything gets worse for her. The pressure of society becomes unbearable. Your social position, responsibilities, relationships, things you thought you are OK with, your friends and family, everything can become frustrating. And in that point, her "Madness" counter begins to rise.
Since the game isn't fun and lies her, she exits the game.

Personally my favorite part of the song (and the one who represents it better) is at the end when the girl is asked to press up and down and the same time (which is impossible, as far as I know in her type of joystick) but briefly you see that it also ask her to press left and right at the same time too, which is still not possible. Not only that but the code rotates one full rotation multiple times in different directions meaning you have to input the arrows as ↑ → ↓ ← and reverse as well.

When you say B there's an up arrow. This happens twice. When you say A you show a right arrow. This two happens twice. At around 2:50 You say X when there's a right arrow. And the fourth and third to last parts of the code have the left and right arrows pointing the wrong way. And now i rest my case.
