The Lokomat is the device that started Jeff's new journey. At the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, he was harnessed to the ceiling and lowered into the device with his son, Zack, looking on. Produced by Swiss robotic rehabilitation firm Hocoma, the machine is meant for "neurological patients with movement disorders caused by stroke, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis or Parkinson's disease," according to the company. It was released in 2001.

seeing my father in one of these while recovering from a spinal injury was one of the most awesome things I have ever seen. it really helped us when there was not much else imo. it allowed him to take part in a walking exercize and It made me smile lots. I got mad love for the locomat.

So cool. I'm a physical therapist assistant. How long does it take for set up when the patient comes in?

Hi. I'm interested in knowing more about the Lokomat training. My mom did not suffer any traumatic injury to the brain but became bedridden after severe bouts of pneumonia which forced her to stay in bed for days. This in effect weakened her muscles specially of the legs for which she is undergoing physical therapy. The therapist says she can still walk but she would complain of some discomfort on the hips while sitting down or standing or walking even for just a few minutes. Would you recommend use of the Lokomat? Or do you have other walking devices that may be used to facilitate her transition from a supine position to sitting to walking?

nicky r yes, absolutely. it has resistance that forces the patient to use their own muscles to power the walking motion and they have weights that can be placed on the ankles to have even more resistance. the machine does the motion of walking but the patient powers it (depending on their needs, sometimes its just used to get the movements down first). my brother was in a serious accident 6 months ago yesterday and he woke up out of the coma he was in about 3 months ago. we were told, because of his serious injuries and severe brain damage, that he may never speak, walk, move, eat on his own, or basically do anything at all! well today he never stops talking, he can stand on his own, eat, and one of his therapy's is using the Lokomat (the machine in the video) which I got the pleasure of seeing him do today. its the coolest machine I've ever seen and it took everything I had not to ask to be strapped in to it myself! 😂
