    • @lazar2175
      @lazar2175 7 років тому +1

      Badly_Dubbed A Corrado is really cool car,i owned one for 17 months and i dont recomend it to new drivers as many of them have problem with rear diff.
      I would compare its handling to a coffin with trash bin wheels.
      But all it takes is like 2-3 bolt-ons and you can make the car feel like 911 and not 20 year old Corrado.
      Plus g60 engine has some potential,so with little tuning,like freeflow air filter,straight pipe and porting/polishing valves would easily spike engine from 120hp to 150hp and with alredy bad rear diff it was nightmare to drive,sometimes jumping and jerking on road.
      And unfortunately its hard to find them these days,especialy not riced out ones with fart cans.
      But they are one of cheapest 'sport' cars to buy and maintain.
      You cant say you are a car guy if you havent owned Corrado,Delta,Golf 2,Alfa 75 or Fiat Coupe.

    • @badly_dubbed2401
      @badly_dubbed2401 7 років тому +2

      Are you sure it was a corrado you owned? A G60 was 160hp standard and they are all front wheel drive so no rear diff.

    • @keesjanklootviool
      @keesjanklootviool 7 років тому

      yup... 160hp on the front wheels...

    • @lazar2175
      @lazar2175 7 років тому

      Badly_Dubbed Here where i live stock Corrados are rare.
      Ussualy they get Porsche 924 tranny and rear diff,Mitsubishi i think but not sure.
      I haven't seen stock Corrado in ages,but i seen some crazy swaps,like rear engine RWD..
      Mine is VR6 with G60 swap,and i wanted to say 120kW not hp...
      Anyway,it was like brick on wheels handling wise always.
      Cheers!

    I don't know if anyone else mentioned it yet but over here in North America, General Motors has the 3.8L supercharged V6 which in my humble opionion is one of the best motor GM ever made! They put it in a ton of different platforms. With mild modifications it is a real performer and returns decent fuel economy numbers. I've seen 35 mpg out of my 03 Bonneville SSEI on trips with speeds in excess of 120 km/h.

    With turbocharging you do *not* get any real free energy. The back pressure on the turbine side is at LEAST as high at that on the compressor side, if not higher due to losses. A significant portion of the extra power developed is consumed by the turbo compressing the incoming air. Really the big advantage is that the boost is not as dependent on engine RPMs as it is with a super charger.

    Why don't new cars use a SC with a clutch pulley like an AC compressor? You can disengage it when crusing or city mode, and engage it when power is needed. It could be a far more simple and reliable system and could even be paired with a Miller cycle engine to get the ultimate economy/power combo.

    it doesn't re-use the exhaust fumes, it just uses them to drive a shaft (through a propeller) which is connected to another propeller (which is connected to the the engine's main air intake channel), the air going through this propeller gets compressed as a result. (15-24 atms more/less depending on size, altitude and other variables)

    Hi VisioRacer, In terms of mechanical engineering anything that forcefully provides compressed air is known as supercharging.
    turbo chargers and compressors(what layman calls super charger) are actually sub division of supercharging.
    Fun Fact... Old Kelvinator fridges used to use corksrew type compressors.. similar to car superchargers. This is why they lasted so long. Now most freezers / AC units use rotary compressors.

    • @VisioRacer
      @VisioRacer  7 років тому

      The English people say the term supercharger. We in Europe use the word compressor for it. The turbocharger is also a compressor, which is also named as turbo-compressor sometimes. This is just the way English knows this words used most commonly.

    99 to 05 buick regals could have a supercharged (m90) 3.8l v6 thaht would make 260hp stock, and easily get to 300 with very simple mods
    its not a lot of power....but the car is 3200 pounds, 4 wheel indy suspension (stolen from the corvette....that made GM happy)
    its actually quite fast..... the 3.8 makes a lot of touruqe, with a light car that actually handles great

    My favorite thing about supercharged engines, is the fluctuation of RPM when at idle. Can't put my finger on what to call it, but it happens because the air intake has a minor vacuum as it struggles to pull air past the supercharger, and it leads to somewhat rough and unique idle sound. That's one reason I like superchargers over turbos. The sound is more obvious on old supercharged muscle cars though (cause of the carbeurator)

  • @chadc437

    The Eaton M90 is a modified roots style supercharger not a twin screw. Roots blowers do not compress the air internally whereas a twin screw style does. Pretty big difference in efficiency between the two types of blower.

    many of the first tfsi/tsi Engines had superchargers for low end torque which detaches at Higher rpms when the turbo kicked in

    In Canada we had a supercharged economy car, the Chevy Cavalier which was a sibling of the Pontiac Sunfire that didn't get this feature. I have only seen of one of these up close and it was factory built, not after market. It was jokingly referred to as the Porsche Cavalier.

    Not a bad list! I think turbos get a bad rap they don't deserve because of their complexity. Generally they outperform superchargers in every way, especially with modern fuel control systems. The only thing superchargers have is simplicity which is fine if you want a simple performance boost instead of top performance. ;)

    You didn't mention any of the L67 supercharged cars from GM ( Buick Riviera, Buick Regal GS, Pontiac Grand Prix GTP, Pontiac Bonneville SSI, Chevrolet Monter-Carlo SS Intimidator edition, Oldsomobile 88 LSS and many more) The engine was Produced from 1991-2007 and made from 205hp, to 260hp, powered by different superchargers ranging from Older Eaton M62s to the then newest Gen5 M90. I owned a 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP Coupe myself, i have some videos on my Channel.

      If you think turbo's sound better, you've never heard a true screw (IE kenne bell) supercharger. Wail from the gods.

    Mazdas Screw charged Miller cycle V6 I see mentioned in the comments, But not the RF-CX 4 cyl Diesel with a Comprex "pressure Wave supercharger" also from Mazda.I tried a 88 626 with this engine, and was pretty impressed despite its low power rating and high mileage. (400.000km)

    Carrado G60 (and VR6) were lovely cars. Pitted against the Calibra V16 (which was quite pretty too) they were that bit more exotic but also quite pricey.

    5:05 I hate how the revs hang on the Mini. Yes, it makes it easier for novices to shift and match rpm going up, but downshifting and trying to engine brake sucks. And it just sounds terrible.

    I believe the supercharged I6 in the DB7 was its initial motor before the introduction of the "Vantage" version which also happened to have a V12 engine. Correct me if I'm wrong.

    MG ZT 220S is the Sprintex supercharger installed to 50 MG ZT imported to Australia. Great improvement to low rev starts until getting into the natural power band of the K series V6 2.5 litre.
