- Darren Fletcher is now one of the UK’s top TV commentators, with BT Sport, calling the Premier League and Champions League. He started by interviewing Brian Clough, and commentating on Nottingham Forest. Here, he’ll tell you the inside story of covering Forest, the differences between commentating on the radio and TV, and how he thinks this could finally be the time when Forest win promotion back to the top flight.

For me, listening to Forest can be separated into three broadcasting chapters - Martin Fisher, Darren Fletcher and Colin Fray. Of course, with a bit of Chippers thrown in, too!

Darren is a fantastic commentator - as I said on a previous post we really have been blessed with the coverage from local stations. The passion in his voice as Forest got a 0-0 at Coventry with 9 men, or as Jon Olav Hjelde got a last minute equaliser away at Preston, will live long in the memory. Those phone-in shows were brilliant as well. He deserves all the success he's had. Obviously Colin is king, but it was wonderful when Martin Fisher filled him for him a few years ago, and it would be wonderful the next time he's away hearing Fletch over the local airwaves once more.

Another fantastic interview chippers, loved listening to fletch the same way as we listen to Colin Fray today. As you may have heard from your former colleagues Robin I was a regular caller on radio Nottingham march talk ranting or praising about Forest over the years. I remember my first phone in was when I was 16 and after we played MK Dons and won 3-0. I called century 106 fm and Kenny burns along with Roger Davies was on the show. Burnsy was impressed with my facts about the game and what we need to improve then he asked for my age and I told him I was 16 and it was my first phone in. He replied we should have more callers like you on here, what a confident lad at 16. So if the team from radio Nottingham was getting annoyed with me on blame Kenny Burns 😂😂😂.

I loved listening to Fletch on the "wireless" back in the day his passion for and knowledge of the club was always evident. Listening to him talk about what was going on behind the scenes post Clough is just brilliant and puts a different slant on many peoples opinions of what was happening at the time.

Great that someone so involved with coverage of the club is such a knowledgeable fan. Don't know how much he can say but I'd love to hear more detail about what happened behind the scenes under Scholar and later Mark Arthur with potential transfers etc.

Also whenever we played against Kenny Lunt and he got to giggles, and the pronunciation of Eugen Bopp. Great memories.
Ha ha… I may be responsible for the Kenny Lunt giggles. I told him the story of the Radio Humberside guy, who’s hysterical, and when commentating on Kenny Lunt, said “Stop me if I call him Lenny…” which still makes me chuckle to this day!!

Fantastic this. Very fond memories of listening to Century as a teenager. Remember being absolutely buzzing when they read out a message I'd sent in. Used to record a lot of it onto tape. Fletch, Chippers and Fray - we've been so lucky to have some real masters commentating over the last 20 years or so.
An idea for a guest would be Ryan Yates... I don't think there's a better time to get him for such an interview. He does a great interview, but they're always short!

I remember listening to one of Fletch’s commentary’s on Forest at Coventry, approx. 20 years ago. It was a night when the reds had 2 players sent off and were still able to hold Coventry to a draw. He mentioned that he would expect nothing less than the Evening Post rating all the Forest players left on the pitch as 10/10 the following day - great words , made the commentary even more memorable.

Not sure if you know him Chippers but would love to hear an interview with Five Live's Pat Murphy. Has covered an awful lot of football in the midlands for national radio and would have great stories - not just about Forest but other clubs as well. He's at his best when he's at a real stinker of a game so it would be worth asking him about some of those!
