A Look At Swiss Volcano, Emberlit and FourDog Bush Stoves

  • Backpacking stoves, Twig stoves, bush cooker or bush stove what ever you want to call them they have several advantages over a ground fire. The contain the wood and allow the heat to rise and not be wasted out the sides. They allow a fire to be brought under a tarp roof with reasonable safety. They seem to regulate and take full advantage of small amounts of wood. Some are just containers with air holes and some are gassifier stoves. That means they reburn some of the fumes put off by the fire. How this magically works? I cant explain but I know it works. In this video we allow 9 ounces of wood for a ground fire and 9 ounces for a Four Dog Stove Bush Cooker in a head to head test.

Morning Dave, another good one. The volcano stove works well by concentrates the heat and flames into a smaller area and the gasifier allows you to totally burn the wood. You are right about playing with your gear I use to have a coach who always said “ boys how you practice is how you’ll play”I don’t get to go often so I set up in the back yard it’s easy to go in the shed to get what I forgot to bring 😂

Nice one Dave! hey I watched a vlog long, long time ago. The guy melted some Vaseline and dipped 2 cotton balls and soaked them. He then had a plastic straw (McDonalds, because they use a larger diameter straw) cut them into about 2-inch increments, melted one side and used pliers to pinch close one end while hot. Then stuffed the Vaseline soaked Cottonballs into the cut strips of the straw. Then meted the open end and pinched that closed. This them provided a waterproof, easy to pack, that won't dry out and emergency firestarter....heheheh for I can remember, it was you who taught me that. thanks again Dave. Stay safe and healthy brother!

Wax paper cotton ball trick is a great idea, I'll be trying that! As for the gasifier I had no doubt it would way out perform the open flame. That 2nd pot of water would have been safe to drink at that temperature. Excellent video Brother Dave! I enjoy these type test videos for sure. Thanks for sharing the results buddy! Swiss Volcano Stove: The weird handle was designed to fit over the handle of a folding snow shovel punched into the ground or snow. (I have used it in a deer stand tied to a tree).
The original stove was a Borde (?) self pressurizing alcohol stove (referred to as the Borde bomb). Was ok at cooler temps and high altitude, but in warner climates it over-pressurizes & explodes. Was replaced by the 2nd Swiss stove you showed. They work well with a standard penny pop can alcohol stove (or any similar). Chafing fuel works ok as well (I've modified a small chafing fuel stove for mine-burns for about 12 hrs), but only gets to about 230F.
You are correct about being able to melt one. They were not designed for wood, but alcohol (try gelled in a jar lid ! ) or chafing fuel (diethylene glycol) works well.

Hi Dave. It's a good thing you bought 2 of the Mors pots. The company that made them went under and these are no longer being made. I love mine and I'm glad I bought one when I did. I've found that the Bushcooker stoves can be hard to light. It takes practice to get a proper fire and to maintain it, but the gasifier effect works very efficiently. If you get a good fire going and you look at the flames without a pot on it, you'll see how the they rise in a spiral. It's super efficient and the amount of ash left over is so small it disappears in the wind when you dump it out. The Four Dog Stove Company has put out some good videos on the Bushcooker stove. Actually, Don, the owner, has done much research before he invented that design. He has made a series of videos comparing different stoves and pots. They are well worth watching. I think one video is called Potology. He covers the different pot designs over the centuries and how the stove flames affect boil times etc. Thanks for the video. I was expecting you to make some Mors style coffee. :)

That is very sad those pots aren't made anymore because they are truly the perfect pot! I've watched a lot of Don Kevilous's videos and he's a very talented man. Thanks for the comments and thanks for watching

I remember the volcano. Had to go back and watch that video. You sitting it on an axe and lighting it with alcohol soaked bits of wood took me back. But yeah awesome test. I think efficient uses of fuel is an important aspect of camping/bushcraft in general. Only carry or harvest what you need to get the job done. Dont get me wrong i love me a big fire and sitting around the "bush television" is one of my favourite things. But a big fire is a treat.

As for starting a fire I use something I have seen you talk about and that is cutting a piece of fat wood log and then drilling holes and saving the dust in a tin for later and the log with holes I put in the bottom of stove add wood stuff steel wool and use my fero rod. It works well. N Joy

As is always the open fire is less efficient than the contained fire ,I had not seen the whirlwind fire before looks good . Personally I have never used any of the portable stoves only open fire only in snow also not a problem for some 65 years now but looks like that has come to an end now with the misses dementia .The one thing I do is scratch out or dig a hole about 8 to 12 inch deep and try and block the breeze with rocks or wood wind blind. Great video as always Dave . Happy trails

Im pretty much the same way, always an open ground fire kinda guy. A lot of my exceptions tho have been in swamps, wetlands or under tarps in rains. I usually have some kinda stove on a kayak trip., Im glad you liked it. Thanks for watching Mike

Excellent! I love wood stoves and have a few. The folding firebox type as well as the smaller version, but my favourite is the gasifier. It's a little different from the one in your test, but does exactly the same thing. It burns for about an hour on one filling, burns hot, and burns everything. Almost nothing to clean up. It's by far my favourite stove. I use wood cat litter pellets which are excellent. Your wax paper starters are a great idea. I love this sort of video on wood stoves and the like, and this was so in depth. A real cut above the rest. Great stuff! 🔥🔥🔥. Many thanks again. Look forward to seeing you use it in a future video in the field 👍😃

"Play with your gear...?!" @Dave, I can think of no better advice. Certainly, for testing what works or doesn't when developing items for a bug out or get home, or an "I'm lost" survival prep kit, one must do the diligence! But a lot of people who enjoy camp trips could extend their fun by testing, in turn, all the sub-groups of equipment! I always had the most enjoyment out of setting up Dutch ovens on the patio, or in the car-port on rainy days! YUMM...! And the kids liked it too...

Another interesting video that was scientific enough to satisfy my curiosity. A lid on the open fire pot may have helped produce a boil. However, bush crafters don't carry see through lids, lol. Open fire vs gasifier stove great subject matter.

Thanks David; I have the smallest Four Dog Bush Cooker and find that the burn chamber is just too small to get two cups of water to boil on one wood filling. I have to add twigs and blow on it to get a boil. I think the larger Bush Cookers are a bit more effective because of the larger burn chamber. Great fun video!
