It's worth pointing out that Atlus has acknowledged the performance issues on PC which is great. Maybe this is an older demo build of the game and they'll make some improvements before the official release. I certainly hope so because the demo has been really good and quite long too by the way.
I've been looking forward to Metaphor ReFantazio's arrival and getting an early demo is a nice surprise, BUT Atlus keeps dropping the ball when it comes to the PC port itself and what are some glaring performance issues. It runs like PC game from many years ago and while there are things we can do to improve it, this should not be happening for a product that costs $70. The fact that there's performance issues on console as well is concerning. Hopefully the team can make some improvements before the game launches on October 11th.
Also want to add, thanks for this video. Mod works so well I went from struggling to get 30fps at literally min graphics, to pushing 180fps at regular.
I played the demo on a NVME SSD, 5800X3D, 32Gb of DDR4 RAM w/XMP and a 4070ti Super. 1080p at 175% resolution scale (1440p internal resolution), High settings and it only dropped to around 90 fps in a cutscene, when playing it runs between 110-120 fps. I'm surprised the game has performance issues my experience has been amazing.
The demo run ok on PS4(not the Pro) just the loading screen animation that lag and the console heat up a bit but it's nothing like the demo of tales of Arise. I did not get any crash of 8h of gameplay

Never use in game vsync .. especially if you have Nvidia. Force it from control panel is always better and will give you better frame times when capping with RTSS
on Xbox Series X the game lags a lot and looks like its running at 30-40fps most of the time. I haven't had any crashes yet in 7 hours of playtime so that's good, i guess.
This is pretty much the norm nowadays, pc ports are usually plagued with frametime issues. Even with the fix it still hitches and stutters quite often, which does not happen on PS5. Until they make things easy for developers, like unifying shaders and making scheduling more efficient at the API and OS level, very few will put the extra hours in to optimize it. It is unacceptable and being a PC gamer myself, the situation gets more frustrating every day. Selling crap in this state should be illegal, as it is essentially faulty goods.
I think this is a developer issue more than it is PC, at least it's how I see it. Even Atlus's own previous ports have been a lot better optimized than this.
@@TerraWare It is definitely a PC issue at some degree, maybe not as much as the developers, but the consoles do not have the frame time issues in almost any games, just lower frame rates, so it is platform specific. Consoles do a good job of making things easy for developers. PC does not unfortunately. This does not mean developers should just give us bad ports, they should put the effort in for sure. The ancient way a pc does things is a hurdle that things like direct storage are trying to address, but adoption is low atm. CPU interrupts and going back and forth through ram is something a console is much more efficiently designed with in mind.
@@djpquickplays1244 Console do make it a bit easier on devs sure. One game I've been particularly interested in is Dragons Dogma 2 on the PS5 Pro was shown to run at around 50 FPS in Vernworth and I tested a sort of PS5 Pro equivalent build looking at the game with a Ryzen 3700X and downclocked 6800Xt and I had some drops to the mid 40's in Vernworth. This game though should be locked 60 no problem at all times on the PS5 at the very least. I almost want to make it to the first boss on the PS5 and test to make sure it doesn't drop below the VRR range. Lowest I saw was 49 FPS.
@TerraWare It does highlight just how much a streamlined design helps, as accessing ram/vram is much faster on a console leading to better cpu performance. The dedicated decompression hardware also takes some work away from the cpu in consoles. It's just so frustrating having a 4080 super with a 14900kf and 32gb ddr5 7200 cl34, and a 990 pro ssd, and seeing stutters that aren't there in the PS5 version of the same game. Ports like God of War, Horizon : Forbidden West and even games like GTA V and Doom: Eternal show that it is possible to have stutter free AAA gaming on PC, but it's a rare privilege these days as games chew through more and more data, the pc just can't move things around fast enough unless the game is coded to only access data when it will not cause interrupts. I prefer a lower frame rate and worse visuals than beautiful visuals and stutters, which is why I own console too, so I can play the bad pc ports there. Here's hoping for the future, now that it's becoming something channels like digital foundry and even yourself are bringing the issue to the light and in some way pressuring developers/publishers to do better. Appreciate the content you provide too, thank you.
Imma be honest, ultrawide should not exist for gaming. Changing the aspect ratio from 16:9 to 21:9 creates A LOT of problems specially in the HUD department. The bloated code is an embarrassment and i really hope it's not in the full release of the game, could be that the Demo has a different build as it was part of the media tour and it's a couple months older but who knows. Thanks a lot for the video and insight.
I can see the UI being a bit of a pain in this particular game for ultrawide but they could still implement one where the UI is left at 16:9 at the very least. Modders will do it like they did with P3 Reload and SMTV. I wish I'd included footage of that from my previous videos.

Wait until the new MH game comes out, 60 fps at 1080p with FG. Oh and medium settings. I'm fully against pirating so I hope people just don't purchase it if reviews show it's that bad. They're just ripping everyone off at this point. Imo games outside of RT and PT should run at 100 fps native minimum on a 4090 and that's only if they're drop dead beautiful. Even then we see games like GoW that are pretty much spotless with extremely high visual fidelity (you can literally count every pore on Krato's Skin from 4 meters away even on a small display) that run at twice the framerate compared to similar looking (which are very few imo) modern games. Even Black myth (comparing these two since I recently played them side by side), yea it looks amazing but not barely 50 fps amazing on a midrange card without upscaling and PT off. In fact I find it looking worse than GoW in terms of shadow and light quality without PT and slightly fuzzy in terms of graphical fidelity in comparison. I actually find GoW to be better looking at every level (before you turn on PT for Black Myth ofc). Same goes for Space Marine, really great performance and extremely crisp realistic visuals (all of the above is subjective based on what I see irl). Good thing UE5 is so flexible even though it's part of the issue in a lot of these cases. Don't even get me started on the lack of UW support. They're more than happy to ''optimize'' (as in let the card brute force it to 60+) for the 2% that use a 4090 and don't bother with the same 2% that use UW cause that would actually take a day or so of work (as proven by moders). That's why I only support and buy from a less than a handful of studios.
I'd understand performance issues if the game had impressive visuals, but outside of the gorgeous 2D art, it looks like a PS3 title. Kinda disappointing.
I heard on Twitter running the PS4 version on PS5 through backwards compatibility mode results in a 60 FPS experience but I haven't tested this myself.

Weird because the same ppl who made Persona made this
I think they will surely improve it for PC
Didn't see any tearing on ps5 tho. I played it on a 60hz TV. Maybe the game has vsync turned on
Do people experience something similar to me? when playing the demo in PC the subtitle in the scene appear but the scene doesn’t appear, but after entering the open world I can play the game without any problems, could anybody help me with the issues please so i can enjoy the story of gameplay 😢😂
@@ichsanifadhil2070 Not sure. Try adjusting resolution, maybe go to borderlands or full-screen.
@@TerraWare i already try it but still got no scene on the screen, i dont know it just happened on my pc or the others too. but i hope atlus could fix it so me either the other people can be convinced to buy the game in full release.
notes: btw my pc is in a recomended spec on steam so that's why im confused, is this a performance issue from the demo or just happen to my pc😬
@@ichsanifadhil2070 May be some type of rare bug. Check steam forums if there's others experiencing the same.
You are the only comment on my video experiencing this type of thing.
How did you install the demo i pre ordered the game but I don't see the option to play a demo for it
@shannonwhitley9139 On PC it's just on the Steam page. On PS5 you just look up the game on the store to the right of it is a ... button, press and should say iinstall demo
@@TerraWare thanks for the help I had to click on the there dots to view the page and then click on the three dots again to download the demo lol
@@shannonwhitley9139 Yeah it's pretty dumb they have it that way instead of a separate listing but that's what it is
Someone also mentioned using Vulkan. I haven’t tried it personally.
Haven't heard that one.
@@TerraWare since it's a dx11 title. It was on reddit
I didn’t really download the fix because my game would run at 25-30 fps on the Rog Ally at the 30W setting no matter what I tweaked.
This seemed completely unjustified from the recommended settings listed on the Steam page, so I just uninstalled the game.
I hear ya. Too bad because its quite good as a game if you are into Atlus RPG's. Maybe they'll fix it before release. They've at least acknowledged the issues on PC on Twitter so that's something at least.
@@TerraWare I was very bummed out since i’ve been following the news on Metaphor ReFantazio since it got announced
For me mod didn’t work, all it did was make my game much darker. ;(
it is supposed to have ultra wide.
How can I download the Demo on PS5? I can't see it on PS store. Do I have to be subscribed on PS plus?
@@wotwom3235 go to store and find the game and select the 3 dots should be there
No you dont. Go to the game and to the right there will be in icon with three dots, press X on that and a menu will pop up showing the demo.
do you think this game support family sharing on steam?because i already pre order the game and my sis want to play it too
I don't see why it wouldn't.
Never use in game vsync .. especially if you have Nvidia. Force it from control panel is always better and will give you better frame times when capping with RTSS
I tried that and using the max framerate cap from the driver. It wasn't as smooth for me.
on Xbox Series X the game lags a lot and looks like its running at 30-40fps most of the time. I haven't had any crashes yet in 7 hours of playtime so that's good, i guess.
Disappointing I need a mod to make the demo better.
Another reason to get my ps5 pro!!
Pc is always plagued with issues you’d think they’d be used to it by now. Cant name one game that was ported smoothly to pc they are all trash
Man, tbh it makes me a little sad that most PC releases are like this, I guess I'll play on PS5 since I'm annoyed by the stuttering lol.
Ps5 ran the demo more consistent but i expected more from a $70 game running on an outdated engine that has been in development for 7 years 😑
Beside the performance, the game itself was fantastic
Funny because elden ring runs like trash and so does the dlc and looks like an outdated ps3 game but you guy didn’t care “10/10 masterpiece”
@@CrimsonBladezz You know that the ps4 version running on the ps5 was perfect, right? Also Elden Ring is 60$ and has way more complex mechanics in it compared to Metaphor.
@@date5960 elden ring is 100 if you want the complete story with the dlc, and yea no crap elden rings ps4 version run better on ps5 what ps4 game doesn’t
@@CrimsonBladezz Uhhh...ps4 games that have their framerate capped at 30? Ps5 can't make those better 🤷♂️
Also what makes you think that Metaphor won't have any dlc story? This is Atlus we're talking about 😂. Considering Elden Ring is an old game now, it's often on sale.
@@CrimsonBladezz That's because Elden Ring is an open world game with a lot more going on and is running better than a game with loading screens for every small area filled with n64 textures.
Could you test Frost punk 2?
I played the demo both on Xbox and PS...its a little bit better Xbox Series X than PS5 ...but nothing major here.
I can’t even get past the first boss fight I fought it twice because I crashed after defeating it both times and I got a bit farther in the game but then crashed a third time I’m gonna avoid the demo
Did you use this mod or no?
@@TerraWare I just tried out the mod this morning seems like it fixed the crashing
@@bevlflisa1301 Interesting. Cool. The demo's pretty long. A lot of game to play.
I’m sure some people see the stutter, but I don’t mind FPS in the 60s. 😅
the Resident Evil 4 demo had worse performance than the final game, i asume it would be similar here.
I hope so
I really wanted to play it on the ps5, guess ill go for the pc version.
I heard on Twitter running the PS4 version on PS5 through backwards compatibility mode results in a 60 FPS experience but I haven't tested this myself.
