I played with the correct varden grip for a long time. I started playing with a golf instructor and he changed it. I have been struggling with a lot of what he has been telling me so this confirms I was right all along including the 2 middle pads on the trail hand. Thanks for the renewed confidence.
Great points Brian about the Vardon Grip and how to do it correctly! When I first started golfing some 70 years ago, I used the Vardon Grip! Then, when Nicklaus came along, I switched over to the interlock because I felt it fit my hand size better. When I used the Vardon Grip, I was one of those you pointed out in this video, who did it incorrectly! I have since tried Vardon on occasion, but I did not feel comfortable with it. I guess I'll just have to stick with the premise, If the interlock is good enough for Jack and Tiger, it's good enough for me. Well Done As Always Brian!
The Vardon is not for everyone that is for sure. But if you do use it this is the way it should be done. Lot's of people are moving towards the interlocking. If what you are doing is working for you you really shouldn't change it. Brian
Yeah. Thank you for a very informative video. You build a proper golf swing step by step and it all starts w the grip. I’ve tried all three grips and Vardon is best for me despite the fact that, as per you, I have been doing it incorrectly for the past 50 years. So it’s back to the drawing board for me. I’ll test your version of it tomorrow
It sounds like you have done a great job. This is more of a tweak than anything. It will feel quite weird at first but give it a good go. At leas a small bucket of balls anyway. I'd love to hear how it goes. Brian
@fitzygolfpro well.brian. first round with the new vardon. Almost felt normal and regardless I struggled on the front I never relented or got a tense grip. It became natural pretty fast. Managed 1 under on the back to salvage a 79. Front 9 was a disaster lmao. Ty brian
I'm an interlocker, it just feels natural. We did a Texas Scramble comp yesterday, finished -3 gross, -13 net. Still 5 shots off the lead though. Each player had to take 4 tee shots min, so it was interesting playing some holes from different places to my own game. Great fun, especially when given the license to be aggressive! Hope you have a top week :)
Yep, that "wrong way" has been my grip since the early 80s -- especially where the grip sits across my finger joints. Will be interesting to put this into practice... thanks!
I started like most with the baseball. I was changed to interlocking by a Pro. My Mum was 5 foot tall and I got her small hands and tiny fingers. Felt good for a while. I was then told to switch to Vardon and I grip it the way you demonstrated. Now you are sending me to the range to have a fiddle again!
@@fitzygolfpro What is it they say? If the new grip feels comfortable you didn't change it. I'll describe my first 18 holes as some and some. There was definately a better release at times. I'm seeing my Pro this saturday and it will help to have some eyes on it. You can never tell yourself, even me with a camera. Cheers Brian
Interesting points, I have tried several grips, some as experiments, some out of necessity ( injuries etc ) I’m not convinced you need to put your little finger on top of your index, but the point you make about grip tension is a sound one …..
Great video Brian. I actually use a variation that has my right pinky in the crack between the index and middle fingers of my left hand, with my right ring finger resting on top of the left index finger. It’s not a single overlap, not a double overlap, but more of a 1 1/2 overlap. That leaves only my right middle and index fingers on the club, which helps my extremely dominant right hand from taking over on the through swing. Try it sometime just for the heck of it; it actually feels pretty good!
Good Day Brian! I have switched to the Vardon Grip (overlap). I know players have different size hands. And I hope i am describing this correctly. But where should the trail palm pad rest on the forward hand? Does it rest on top (side) of the thumb knuckle or above it (towards the palm pad) As always, I love your videos! Thanks! Wade
Hi Wade I am glad you are enjoying my content. The pad of your trail hand should rest on the lead thumb. I discuss most of the grip in the following video. The Golf Grip Explained ua-cam.com/video/3rGdTrxFtHc/v-deo.html Brian
The information in this video is 100% correct. There is zero tension in your forearms with this grip. Less tension = higher swing speed = more distance = greater accuracy and more graceful golf swing.
I used the overlap for about 20 years 1 day at the range I went with the baseball grip just out of a whim never look back it feels so comfortable I get so much hand speed
With my small hands I gave up on the interlocking grip, as it caused some discomfort in the little finger, and switched to the Vardon grip (even though I did not know until this video that this is what it is called!). I think I have the right hand grip in the correct place but fairly certain the pinky finger is not. I shall have a look/feel tomorrow when I am on the course.
Some people experience a little pain as you did with the interlocking grip. You are not alone. The adaption to the Vardon Grip should not cause you any discomfort. Have fun playing with it. Brian
@fitzygolfpro thanks for the reply mate any chance doing a video on using a 60 degree lob shot explaining the wrists at impact and pressure and club path etc?
Alex was a quiet achiever. He received the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) last year. But I bet he was happiest when he was coaching pin-up girl golfer Jan Stephenson.
Maybe. I spoke to him recently and his mind is as sharp as a tack and could remember small details of our time together but unfortunately he doesn't have much mobility these days. A great man. Brian
hey brian, you used to do lessons at morack with me and my brother 6-7 years ago. you might remember damon? anyways recently just got back into golf. I'm holding the club with interlocking fingers. Hard to explain. but does the vardon grip help with accuracy & stuff like that. sorry if i sound confusing just difficult understanding everything again.
I do remember. Glad to hear you are back into golf. Gripping the correct way with any of the 3 grips is important. One won’t necessarily be more accurate than another. But using it the right way will help. I’m just up the road these days at Eastwood GC.
I have always avoided golf books so I am not really familiar with what Hogan said or that of Ernest Jones. I just listened to Alex and did what he said. He never let me down. Brian
WHY? Why does having the little finger on top produce a better golf shot than letting it settle into the space between the fingers? There must be a reason...

It’s the difference in tension in the middle part or the grip.
