  • Merlin modifies the grocery getter Cushman kei mini truck! This truck has so much potential and Merlin is bound and determined to get 4th and 5th gear working. This truck is almost ready for the road as long as he can get it registered! Thanks for following along this fun build.

It is an automotive/hot-rodding/fabricating UA-cam Channel FACT that Merlin's Old School Garage does interesting, skilled, fun, cool, teaching stuff. Merlin is one of those guys who is so mechanically inclined in spades he can do anything (and he wants and needs to work on projects like other people need to breathe air). Super content on so many levels.

Right!? I'm up here in Maine, you could never do what this fella did. They are so strict out there. Especially with vehicle inspections. That's the biggest problem up here.. Can't build anything, or do much at all to your vehicle.. I'd absolutely love to live in this area just for the freedom. Wicked cool to see though!

The title bond and licensing without a title or at least some pretty solid evidence of ownership is a PITA. I've built custom motorcycles with all new parts, frame, engine and everything and where I've had every single receipt down to the fasteners and wiring and they've still hassled me for weeks and forced me to get a title bond. I doubt Merlin has too much trouble in Havasu, but come down to the Valley in Phoenix/Scottsdale/Tempe/Mesa and try it. One time I drove out to the middle of Navajo county where I own some property and the old gentleman there did it without blinking an eye.

Hey Merlin, you should get in touch with Marty and Moog from mighty car mods in Australia, they have done a couple of those Diahatsu Kei mini trucks and have turbocharged both apparently they turbocharged them in Japan and you can buy wrecked engine parts with the super flat low profile intakes and exhausts to fit those engines. They even converted one of them from carby to fuel injection and they both go like shit off a shovel. Any way if you get InTouch with them they'd only be to happy to share info and might even come out to do a callaboration video is heyve done some from Japan before, anyway just thought I'd share that, great vid loved it

But can Tim drive it with the window rolled up? The old Ford Escorts were probably tighter inside. My younger brothers laughed at me when I couldn't get out of an Escorts drivers seat if I had a small cup or even a sheet of letter sized paper in my hand however they couldn't do it either!
Have fun with it and try to keep it original however if you blow it consider a 4FB1 Isuzu OHC 1.8L Diesel Engine from an 80's Chevette Scooter. They came with an old school mechanical Kiki pump, had the Turbo Compensator already installed and mate up with the MSG5 transmission plus the trussed con rods, etc hold up nicely to the boost.
    Best!

You're the Man Merlin, you can fix about anything, that method of "Fixing" the gear box to get the other 2 gears, was something in itself. The Registration seemed Easy there, Not like here in Australia, it can be a nightmare trying to get Official VIN numbers, etc, and here you can't even put anything on the Engine that is NOT Originally manufactured for it, not even a better Carburettor. Your front tyres stuck out past the body panels, that is illegal here, ( the Cops would chase you, and Defect your car for that) you can put bolt on flares to make it OK, but with those doors that would be hard.

    Hey Merlin,
Nice work on that little rice burner.
I live in Tokyo with my dad in the late 70's. Two of my friends bought used mini trucks. 1 a pick up and the other a van. The both were crying that they only had 3 speeds. Turns out that a Tokyo City ordnance limited top speed on delivery vehicles to roughly 30-35 mph.
But the out lying provinces being mostly agricultural had no such restrictions. One of my friends drove out to the countryside and scored a working 5 speed from a farmers supply.
