    A lot of mitigating factors with that game vs Hearts. International players coming back flat from their midweek games... and it was Engels first start with this squad so he's not going to be expected to gel with his teammates, however what he did individually was very encouraging.

    great chat ,
    magic 1 non penalty xg ? may be im mis construing , the magic number for me is 1.5 net xg differential. this takes into account the mean error on the data . at 1.5 net xg 1 goal negative variance can still deliver a draw at better than 50% probability,
    for what its worth , net xg form home and way is the best predictor of an outcome in a football game , the second best is goal difference. but before we get our hopes up re taking the bookies to the cleaners, the mean error is huge .
    re hearts defensive shape - 532, but the big difference was celtic didnt have a speed advantage on the wing ,unlike previous games , and hearts defended the middle of the block well, unlike previous opposition, so credit to hearts, and a more difficult day for celtic .
    based on squad attack contribution , celtic deserved 4.5 goals to hearts 1.5 in a perfect game, but assuming 30% efficiency , 2 nil a fair result, but would have been happier if the goals didnt come from a penalty and long range speckie,
    re bratislave- celtic are outgunned in midfield with only 2 euro level mids , calmac and engels , my reading of bratislava is they have 4 , and that armenian bloke if he is still there, gives me mudryk vibes and we all know how that panned out with shaktar. mor would have been handy.
    this game will hinge on celtic pressing tactics, if bratislava like most east eurpean teams opt for slow slow fast , celtic 3/4 hybrid press that they have been practicing in all the pre season friendlies could be in trouble , so hopefully celtic go full court press for maximum disruption

    No doubt Engels is a player but our midfield didn’t function as well as it has been this season. Paulo is well versed in our patterns of play. I think Brendan will start with Bernardo rather than Engels against Slovan 🤷‍♂️

    No-one, after Matt O’Riley’s first season would have forecast him being sold for 26-30m…. He was changed and improved. Engles is 20, has great ability, and will flourish under Rodgers and be a star in my opinion.

    • @gezobel
      @gezobel Місяць тому

      Tbh, I was never an O'Riley fan. Yes, I know, I know, the stats, the stats. But amidst all the hype my eye-test showed that he was slow, weak in the tackle and passing and shooting indifferent at best. But, hey, it's not my eye-test that matters it's the stats and thank goodness for that to the tune of £26m+. 😎. You are right though what Rodgers did was schooling him to be in a position to score goals when before that he wasn't doing very much at all. Brendan has a proven track-record in getting the best out of players .. even mediocre ones .. and, yes, I have high hopes in this regard for Arne and also, it has to be said, for Paulo and maybe even Luke!

      @@gezobel Don't worry, you are NOT alone, since like you, I was also never ever a fervent O'Riley fan for the reasons that you outline & something that I never ever ''struggled'' with, whilst so many others catapulted him into someone who we would get something like £40 million & upwards for, which was only ever completely delusional & yes Rodgers did improve his overall performance last season & cut price & squad player Bernardo is an interesting one, in the sense of how Rodgers ''progresses'' him, because for sure, the huge big weakness in his game is giving the ball away far too easily & far too often & that's, obviously, nowhere near good enough when playing at the very highest level in Europe.....

  • @B_dizzy-l5v
    @B_dizzy-l5v Місяць тому

    Its funny Engels getting motm and Hatate got slated after the game. I remember at the time thinking, Reo hasn't given the ball away as much as Engels so the stats reflecting that helps me believe im not going mad!

    • @alanmorrison5981
      @alanmorrison5981 Місяць тому

      Hatate's pass % was 80% Engels 84%. Hatate managed 1 pack pass, Engels 4. Pack turnovers - Hatate 0 Engels 5.

  • @theLowestPointInMyLife

    As I said on Engels before he signed, he just looks like a typical modern player, good athlete, good height, good engine, but ive not seen anything from him to suggest hes a particularly good football player, in the slightly intangible sense of "class" and IQ. Hes going to do the basics, cover a lot of ground, press and fight, might even add goals to his game, but is he going to cut open Atletico Madrid like Matt ORiley? Probably not.
    Hes going to be a useful player and has an excellent physical foundation for Rodgers to build on, but I wouldnt have paid 11m for him, Augsburg have got the value on that deal, especially with the sell on. Im not convinced he has the footballing talent to ever be worth significantly more than that, I see his ceiling being like a competent Gladbach centre mid, in fairness the type of player we end up wishing we had after we get slapped around in Europe again.

      Let's compare O'reillys first few games to Engels... Not comparing like for like when looking at Engels at the start to O'reilly at the end.
      Plenty growth in him yet....

      From what you’ve seen ie. 90mins. Hardly the way to judge him. I get what you mean though from first impression. O Riley creativity is almost impossible to replace, we’ll need other players to step up and contribute

      I'm going to reserve judgement. Alan always talks about sample size, the time he talks about is in the thousands of minutes AND we have a manager in BR who one of notable sterengths is talking young talent and finding a player in there and nurturing it.
      A lot of ifs and buts but I'll give him at least the, what is it @AlanMorrison , 3,000 minutes before even trying to assess him and even after that, I'd remind everyonoe that it took from the summer deadline day deal til Xmas to get GG to start getting his head up, so settling, development its a game of if this then that else...
      Good luck Engels, I suspect in Scotland you will be a superstar, I hope that carries into Europe, but we will see. I'm pulling for you. HH

      @@con999tThe team has hardly collapsed since the Blessed Matt left us? More dynamic midfielders will arguably improve the side going forward .. that's my sense, anyway.

      @@gezobel Absolutely '' the team has hardly collapsed since the Blessed Matt left us'' but moody & sulky Hatate's woeful & dire ''performance'' against the Swinecastle rabble last Saturday was truly horrific & so what does Rodgers do now, does he start with him against Bratislava & the very real clear & present danger moody & sulky Hatate ONLY serves us up more of the same, or does he go with Bernardo & that also has significant ''difficulties'' in that for me, we're already a man down in midfield with the now in his 32nd year Wee Callum & his very best days now ONLY completely behind him when playing at the very highest level in Europe, but whoever he starts with, our current Manager MUST get it right.

    A question on Celtics annual operating costs. It cost us 106M to run Celtic last year. Is this getting a bit out of hand, or does that figure include the infrastructure upgrades to Barrowfield and Lennoxtown? I suppose we could handle 1 Europa League season but 2 consecutive Europa League seasons may put a dent in that Huge cash reserve we have. This is why we should invest that huge nest egg into our football department so we can unearth gems during those Europa League seasons that may be on the horizon.

    • @lewismaclean6562
      @lewismaclean6562 Місяць тому +1

      I don’t think Capital expenditure projects will be counted in running costs. These will be in the balance sheet.

    • @alanmorrison5981
      @alanmorrison5981 Місяць тому

      It sounds like it me be uncomfortable but Celtic have the cash reserves and asset value in the squad to withstand a couple of poor Euro seasons. But i'd expect the volume and value of transfer churn to continue upwards

    • @ajsctech8249
      @ajsctech8249 Місяць тому +1

      @@alanmorrison5981 Yes the upward inflation of the value of Celtic players and outgoing transfers is trending upwards in the next 5 to 10 years and will increase further if we invest in a proper Football recruitment department. That is the optimisitic side as we also see Aberdeen sell their best player to champions League side which also suggests Scottish football is seen increasingly on a par with English Championship in terms of player values and we know that this league routinely trade players for 10M to 20M values and more. The goal Celtic should then have given this large Operating Cost should be - how do we make most European teams in the qualifiers dread drawing Celtic in future Champions League qualifiers? With the Sevco nearing another Titanic moment then we cant rely on their European coefficient points which should force us into strengthening our Football and Recruitment departments. In the longer term All paths lead to Rome and a fully fledged Euro superleague financed by Amazon or Google with 2 Euro leagues of 18 teams with the Cheap Airline carriers offering package deals with fans
