Take advantage of the knowledge this man is giving from experiences. Not everyone can afford to travel and take a hands on class. But you can listen and apply knowledge to your work. Thank you Jason
I really enjoy your take on knives, design and life as well. No dogma, just freedom of expression coming from your heart. I learn from every one of your videos. Thank you !
I really appreciated the comment about intent. I've felt the same way for a long time. It becomes a weapon in how it's used. Attack someone with a hammer? You just made a tool a weapon. I love the videos Jason. Makes my hands itch to get back in the shop.
Dad and I learned together the art of Blacksmithing. I preferred knife/tool making, dad preferred flowers, fish, plant leaves, cabinet handles. We learned from each other, shared triumphs and failures. He is gone, and I beat the ever loving fu$k out of yellow steel. He is always with me, we are still learning together. Sometimes I get "stuck" then, he comes to me and suggests this or that! I wish my son had an interest, but drugs and booze is his hobby. I enjoy your videos very much! Thank you for all you share! You make a difference with your welds, cuts, forging, filing, sanding, and finishing! Keep the fire hot, and your hammer moving!!! Thanks again!
I like your point of view on this video. You have inspired me to find my style that people will know.i like your poverty comment also. Keep up the good work that helps people like me to become something other than a cheap copy.by the way I never would have found you here if it hadn’t been for that show with the fire. Lol
Another great post Jason! Hand sanding is when we all get philosophical! Lol. In the 14 months I have been making blades, you have been my go to! For inspiration, education and entertainment! Thanks!!
I appreciate your insight into the brut de forge knife being a truer expression of the bladesmith's art and technique. Certainly I can grind off my mistakes, usually, but seeing the hammer marks shows the skill involved.
I like your philosophy. I'm about to start making knives - old school, with hand tools only, no power tools. The prospect that excites me most is the design/testing/tweeking. So I can definitely relate
The manner in which you present you works is very well done! I have had a forge but move to a different state and I am beginning again to get my things in order. Slower this time to develop a style. Watching your programs do inspire the creativity GOD intended and put in our inner being. Thank you, GOD BLESS YOU AND GOD BLESS AMERICA! Here we have the freedom to be individuals.
Hey great video as always love to watch. It's always fun to look in a great workshop with a guy that actually has a clue what he's doing. greetings from Germany Fabian
I wish I could smash a heart button on this video instead of the things up because I love the simplistic "what you see is what you get" approach of this video. I am new to this craft but for more than 20 years I've had a deep fascination with blades, but not until recently have I had such a respect for the expression of art that is a blade. Thanks for this video!
I am entering into forging blades. Building my charcoal forge, an anvil that fits my needs is complete, and a modified post vise is coming to fruition. I so enjoy the content of your videos. They inspire me. My sincere gratitude. Respectfully, Bryan
Thank you for your thoughtfulness and encouragement. I appreciate that you are just authentic and you cut all the “hocus pocus” our of knife making. Keep it up and I’ll keep watching!
I'm smiling cause that's exactly how I started knife making , 1 Christmas I was looking 4 a knife 2 take camping telling my wife I like this and that but if ima spend 600$ I wanted it the way I wanted it yet was unable 2 find it , her hearing that bought me an advanced blacksmithing course and told me 2 make my own , honestly I was full of doubt that I could do it , now I'm in my second yr apprentice with the abs ... still havnt made the knife I want , lol , thank you sir cause I've been getting lost in my reasons why , peace
I really like your knife! Thanks for being straight with why you do what you do. Too many knife makers seem to be chasing something that's not who they are? It's like they haven't found themselves yet. Cool video, great insight, inspiring!
I can not express how much I appreciate your content and what you do. I started making mistakes and wasting steel (forging) 4 months ago. You've taught me so much. Thank you.
Really really appreciate your videos! I appreciate that you’re taking up the torch of caring for the heart and soul of us bladesmiths! It’s easy to connect with your style of talk, like hanging out with an old brother, I will come hang with you someday. Take a class with you or just have a beer!👊🏻
Hello Jason, I am a Mexican starting on this making knives life long journey, I want to thank you for the advice and support in making things with your mind and hands. Someday I will be at one of your teaching courses. Best regards!
I enjoy so much listening to you ramble, especially when you're ramblings equal out to some of the most profound philosophy I've heard in this day and age. And this comment is coming like over a year after you posted this vid! I very much enjoy hearing and listening and watching you sir, please! Keep the good content coming! #KeepOnMaking
Love listen to you talk honest about your thoughts. Your ideas, so don’t stop, and if you happen to upset someones feelings they should of ask you. I try to catch all your videos.
I love the work place philosophy chat. Nothing like doing some monotonous work and keeping your mind run. I greatly appreciate the part about intent being the motive. A knife is a tool it because a weapon with intent. Great stuff keep it up.
Sunday, June 26, 2022 23:51 Hey Jason, I really find this vid a major inspiration and great mindset you have and shared. Thank you for that. In one of the earlier vids I saw, you said that after becoming a Master you have learned the Basics and from there you started to really Learn (Through experimentation, and that’s how all inventions are made). I feel the same, as with any skill you have to master the basics to understand how and what is working and then start to innovate. I like to compare it with martial arts. First you go to a class. You do thousands of basics moves, and once you master the basics you can combine the moves to a next level of protecting, attacking, etc. As you said the blades you are making come out of personal experience and needs. And I really like your thoughts about how to design the next blade, based on the actual needs and creativity. I am now learning knife making, metallurgy and blade, handle, etc design, because I did not find the blade I was looking for. Its not that there are no nice blades, but the possibility of creating something of your own, with also Designing it, is soo pleasant. And it is a nice hobby to have for developing a skill. Strange to say, but is helping me with media and digital detox. The journey is what matters. Also the clarity of your vision is nice and refreshing. Nice ending also by saying its not a fighter knife, but a tool to carve your way in the bushes. Thank you!
You are so awesome and so cool. Your way of thinking and way of expressing yourself really does move people and inspire them to make something really cool straight out of their minds. Thank you for sharing Jason 🙏🏻
I like this guy. No bs just a bloke making his products and being realistic. We need more of this on the internet and less garbage about magical claims and selling snake oil. Thanks for posting an awesome vid.
Hi, Jason. I really enjoyed this video. I.always love to hear other people’s philosophy. I’ve been playing guitar since I was 16....I’m 71 now and still love to learn something new. Thanks for the props to Prince. I have been following you for about six weeks now and I’m enjoying your videos. I like how you let your mind travel while you’re doing the small, tedious things. It’s kind of like when I’m walking behind my mower and you just get in a zone and I have come up with some of my best music that way. Just wanted to drop you a note of thanks. Keep enjoying what you do cuz life goes by fast. Peace
I agree make what you like the way you like it. Then test it, change it to do what the task or job demands. Remember a edged thing ( bone, rock, glass, or steel ) is a tool first, art second.
I feel you on all these subjects. I taught knife based martial arts to civilian and military markets for a few years, whichis how I ended up beginning my hobby of knife making. People who make these absurd feeling/looking knives arent putting them in their hands and using them, or maybe dont know what a real knife should handle like when you use it. Its a tool and should be the best possible extension of yourself to suit the purpose of your intent. That's all.
Thank for taking the time to teach.I hope to learn more from saga 1,2,3 every video I learn some thang more and your video on how to forge dynamically has helped me with a better understand of blacksmith
I like what you have to say about knife-making. It is an art, I'm just now getting into it myself, built my first Forge yesterday. I love the simplistic nature of how you think things are, especially when you talk about how a knife is not a weapon, a weapon has intent. I myself carry around probably a dozen or so "tools" that I've done with grinding no forging, yet. I can't wait to start actually forging them. Thanks for the inspiration and the videos.
Love the theory and heart behind it brother, motivational. I'm not there yet but I'm banging away in the back yard and hand filing. Getting there thanks
This was amazing, best one so far. The ideas and thoughts are so fresh and I'm sure they ruffle some feathers of the status quo. 2years ago when I started knife making I went to a show and table after table were these mirror polish knives and not to diminish their work but, they were boring. Then I saw this guy who's stuff was acid etched and had this cool blacksmith's curl on the back and I stood there and admired them. Then this year at Blade west I saw your elemental knife in person. It was the coolest blade I had ever seen. Got the Forged series. Now I have been enjoying these youtube videos seeing the mind behind the maker. I wanna sit and buy you a beer or 3 next time you're in Portland or maybe I'll make it out to one of your classes.
Thank you for another great video. I always want to get to the shop and light my little devil forge Everytime I watch your videos. I appreciate that you give your time trying to inspire other knife makers or those like me trying to become a knife maker.
I really enjoyed the video man, every point. Love history and the thought of how they may have created what they had, can not stand to hear people say it’s fact or not when they weren’t there. I’m still trying to learn the classic arts but will have the skills to branch out at one point. When I get there I will owe a great deal to you and others for the seed of thought planted. Thank you sir.
Beautiful work and I Thank You Kindly! Thanks to Nathan I know about you. I also subscribed, gladly. You hit the nail on the head about our true history too! DaveyJO in Pa.
I'm getting ready to go into a new season of my life and forging is part of that future. I've done a little years ago but never really finished anything? Now that I'm getting the tools together I just want to say thank you for your knowledge.
I have really enjoyed listening to your thoughts about knife making. Thank you for sharing. As a woodsman, martial artist, and marksman, I enjoy hearing how you have come to the positions that you hold. The enjoyment is not because you hold similar values/opinions that I do, but because they are helping me to refine my own. Again thank you! ps. Your DL-44 tattoo is awesome!
Agreed. That knife is part of history, as it is an evolutionary result of master Craftsmanship, knowledge, experience, and a guy who screwed around with knife making of all kinds.
Thank you. You come across as such a cool down-to-earth kinda guy. I love watching your videos and can’t wait to meet you at the Smoky mountain hammer in. Your videos are easy and instructional. Thanks again.
Wow! I really enjoyed this video Jason. All I would add would be a cold beverage and kick back and soak/take in the good conversation. Well done! Thanks for sharing! :)
I'm really enjoying the talks as well as watching the forging. Watching the slow methodical way you forge , has helped me in the way I swing a hammer and place hammer blows. With my work schedule at the moment I cant make it to any of your classes. So looking forward to getting the forged series. Thanks again Jason!
Great video, Sir Jason! Love hearing about the whys of it all. That was my favorite part of learning about math - the why of how it works. Love your videos, my gentleman bladeson.
I built my first forge from a brake drum, a grill bottom, and clay from my back yard. I used plumbing from the local big box store. I used a hair dryer for air supply but I kept popping the curcuit breaker so I got a cheap squirrel cage hand crank. Man, the smell of that coal lighting as the wind was in my face. I had this thing just sitting on cinder blocks. It fell over after the first year. I thought I could do better, so I got a piece of radio tower and put the bottom of a hybochi table top grill as my fire pot. I used the hand crank until I got a job at The box store. I got me a welder, I got me a cheap bathroom fan and a hose for a shop vac. So much better not killing myself cranking. Well, I burned through that firebox and got a propane forge. This is my third year with that forge and 7 th overall. I have heat treated 5 blades, I have handled 3 of them. 2 of them are made of 1084. the first one was made of mild steel lol. I have some 80crv2. I watched Forged like 6 times. I watch your how to forge a blade without a power hammer every week.
Im about to start forging for the first time..i am doing it the hard way ibwas told...i dont care..charcoal..ancient anvil and 3 hammers is all i own. But i wanna know if i can do this..start with a nail or leaf..one day a knife. But through it all i wanna say thanks to you. No matter what..i will enjoy the process..the journey. Ive been watching your videos and that was the best thing ive learned..enjoy the journey, always keep at it, and do what makes me happy. Hope to meet you one day. Thanks Jason.
Hey man. I call philosophizing, "idle talk". I idle talk to myself when I'm sanding or grinding, swinging my 3lb, 8 dollar cross peen against the spine, flush with the anvil to straighten the blade. I go over my life in my head while i work on blades dude, and i love that you shared your process and your thoughts. I never considered it being "my" knife because my inspirations built it. Never thought about adding curves to one because corvettes look hot. Theres no room for any criticism or anything here. You asked for feedback and I'm not sure this is exactly what you meant, but i do appreciate you expelling your philosophy. Sometimes someones new outlook on things is buried under someone elses bad day, but get in the zone and start thinking and sharing, you might change someone. -love the idea man. Keep em coming.
I enjoy your philosophy. Especially knives not being weapons. I had a boss try to tell me I shouldn’t carry a weapon while working. I told him that it was a tool. It’s a weapon if I use it to hurt a person, it is a tool if it helps me get my work done.
It's good to see someone who can talk.. many good conversations develop out of one subject.. especially when you throw in a beer or two.. haha! Good talk man! Keep it up
Thanks Jason, yet again making alot of sense of the function of a knife. If you can't skin a deer, stick a pig or actually go out and use the thing as intended, what's the point. Keep these coming, loving them.👍
Yes Jason like I do believe someone that has showed me he understand and just watch him and do see how he treats others and the things he works with ok I will hush up as I have shared before with you this is all new to me I got hurt doing what I loved and now picking up a new trade. Bless you
Good advice to just do you at no matter what the medium, and to get out there and do it, use it and refine it. Applies to much more than blades. Deep thinking stuff...
Really enjoyed this video Jason. Been making knives for about 8 months and having problems with creativity and making something different. Find it hard to be original with everything you see. Given me a few things to think about. Thanks.
Diggin the videos dude. It's nice to see a respected maker share his thoughts and perspectives. Too many "this is the only way" makers out there. Cheers!
You remind me of me with a scally cap and a beard. Good knives, Good videos, Good narrative, Good beer I’m down. I Smith some. Building a power hammer this spring. I’m in Baileyton TN. You should come by some time. Later
Take advantage of the knowledge this man is giving from experiences. Not everyone can afford to travel and take a hands on class. But you can listen and apply knowledge to your work. Thank you Jason
Love your stuff man. Been blacksmithing for about 10yrs. But starter with stock removal knives. But man , I appreciate your vids and attitude so much.
I really enjoy your take on knives, design and life as well. No dogma, just freedom of expression coming from your heart. I learn from every one of your videos. Thank you !
Honest information without fiction! Highly respected!
I really appreciated the comment about intent. I've felt the same way for a long time. It becomes a weapon in how it's used. Attack someone with a hammer? You just made a tool a weapon.
I love the videos Jason. Makes my hands itch to get back in the shop.
There can be intent in design though. I mean , a sword is a pretty lousy tool for anything, but a great weapon for hand to hand combat.
Just need to say I appreciate you're clean, honest, and bare bones approach to your work. Man... it's refreshing.
Thank you sharing your insight and design I really like the size and shape of the blade the handle with the flair at the end is great
I just want to spend an afternoon hanging out with Jason now, just shooting the breeze because he sounds like someone I would just enjoy being around.
Omg! 🤣 The editing of your videos are perfect! Props to your media crew 🤙 The beginning was hilarious! Love the music reference ⚒
Love to hear the other side of forging, the who, what, when and where is every bit as important as the how. Thanks for sharing again!
"I feel like I'm gettin' better at it"...from an actual master. That's how you become epic. Awesome.
@@JasonKnightMS 100% truth.
I like your point of view on this video. You have inspired me to find my style that people will know.i like your poverty comment also. Keep up the good work that helps people like me to become something other than a cheap copy.by the way I never would have found you here if it hadn’t been for that show with the fire. Lol
Man, I could sit here and listen to Jason rant about things all day. Amazing out look and opinions on things, love it.
Hey Jason! Hope you are having a good day! I just wanted to say you are the reason me and my dad started blacksmithing 😄
Certainly I can grind off my mistakes, usually, but seeing the hammer marks shows the skill involved.
a beer and your vids man nice evening
thanxs dude
I like your philosophy. I'm about to start making knives - old school, with hand tools only, no power tools. The prospect that excites me most is the design/testing/tweeking. So I can definitely relate
I like the way you think, good video.
Your chats on what is your take/view is refreshing and a pot of gold of true worth
J hooks. The bane of my hand sanding experience.
It's always fun to look in a great workshop with a guy that actually has a clue what he's doing. greetings from Germany

Great video Jason! You just have to enjoy what you're doing to get better. Go with the flow right outside the box. No limits!
Love your philosophy on a "knife is not a weapon its the intent of a person " awesome work!

Love to hear you rambling about your passion,
gave me some new insights too.
Some things are universally true.

I really liked your view point on American culture and history, I totally agree.

Awesome Video as always !!! I learn more and more each and every time.. OUTSTANDING...
Wow! I really enjoyed this video Jason. All I would add would be a cold beverage and kick back and soak/take in the good conversation. Well done! Thanks for sharing! :)
I even love this format as a podcast, you workin on something and just discussing what comes to mind
Hey Jason i really enjoy your knife making videos, really enjoy listening to you talk the real truth about your maker style!;) keep on forging!
When I listen to you I hear common sense - THANK YOU!
Keep it up
Just put the camera on and watch him maneuver his ahop as he shares his story. Absolutely brilliant and inspiring.
Thanks Jason, yet again making alot of sense of the function of a knife. If you can't skin a deer, stick a pig or actually go out and use the thing as intended, what's the point. Keep these coming, loving them.👍
Great episode - I feel like you were getting close to telling us the Riddle of Steel!
Yes Jason like I do believe someone that has showed me he understand and just watch him and do see how he treats others and the things he works with ok I will hush up as I have shared before with you this is all new to me I got hurt doing what I loved and now picking up a new trade. Bless you
Look at all of those klingspor belts. Love the videos. Keep it up.
These videos are great, man. Keep em comin. See ya'll in NC in 2 weeks!
Cheers!
You have no idea how much I've learned from your videos
I've already got people wanting me to make them knives
Very informational and helpful. I appreciate your knowledge.
You remind me of me with a scally cap and a beard. Good knives, Good videos, Good narrative, Good beer I’m down. I Smith some. Building a power hammer this spring. I’m in Baileyton TN. You should come by some time. Later
