- What's up, people! I'm back with another ABBA reaction, and this time we begin going through their 1975 self-titled album (the first album as ABBA, as a number of you have explained), and we kick things off with the sonically fantastic and lyrically relatable (for me and surely many, many others) "Mamma Mia," which doesn't seem in any way Italian though I couldn't help but wonder if it would have that ingredient in advance given the title. Regardless, this is a really well-composed song, so join me for some tasty ABBA tunage. Cheers!

This was a worldwide hit, including number 1 in the UK. Releasing it as a single was an afterthought, as it was so popular in Australia. It sealed the deal for the success to come.
And from now on Abba-mania began. This is an epitome of a pure pop music song.nothing to change or even dare to touch.
I'm glad that you're reacting to the album versions and not the music video. There's a song titled Eagle where a lot of vloggers are reacting to the music video which is shorter and they are missing out on the experience. The bass on Mamma Mia is sick! First time I listened to the record, my speakers were rumbling. The next song Hey Hey Helen is one of my favorite.
Anyone know if watching video.? ABBA is good singing group, but a lot of appeal was for how pretty the all were.
Yeah, I think sometimes more committed fans get a bit annoyed that certain hit songs get all the attention even though there are many other gems in their discography. I've seen it happen with a-ha fans in my deep-dive with that band----most a-ha enthusiasts enjoy "Take on Me," but view it with mixed feelings because sometimes people talk about it as if it's the only thing a-ha ever did.
Cheers for the comment!
Classic Abba. It was the last song recorded for the album and Benny has said it was their first "eureka" moment regarding the arrangement and production. As you said it's really tight, there is nothing extraneous or distracting and it sounds like Abba. It's a really interestingly structured song, almost like the chorus has three sections. It was a number 1 in five countries.
An interesting trivia about this song. Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody was the number song on the charts and ABBA's Mamma Mia was number 2. ABBA knocked out Queen out of the number 1 spot. The funny thing is in Bohemian Rhapsody, there's a line that says "Mamma Mia, Mamma Mia let me go!"
Ha, talk about a funny and fitting coincidence!
Wow, never thought about this. What a weird coincidence 👍
Despite sounding like a cheerful happy go lucky song, this deals with a problematic toxic love affair.Just pay attention even to the intro lyrics 'i've been cheated by you since i don't when'...But Abba were masters of the 'happy sad policy'.
Welcome to the first GREAT ABBA album, there are indeed some gems on this (and every album after this one).
This was ABBA’s 2nd UK number 1 in the UK knocking off Queens bohemian rhapsody of the top spot which also contained the words Mamma Mia in it. Track 4 would be ABBA’s UK big breakthrough after Waterloo. SOS was described by the Beatles John Lennon as the best pop song ever written and also a favourite of Pete Townsend
While "ABBA", their third album was not a big hit when it was launched in 1975. For some reason, ABBA decided to pick some songs from "Ring Ring" and "Waterloo", plus 5 songs from "ABBA" to create a compilation - "The Best Of ABBA", released at the end of 1975.
Now, that album went on to become the best-selling album of 1976 in West Germany, Austria, Australia, and New Zealand.
In Australia, the album spent 16 weeks at number one (22xPlatinum), and in New Zealand, 18 weeks (24xPlatinum). That was when ABBAmania started over there.
Eventually, the original album "ABBA" started to chart reaching 13 in the UK in 1976 and somehow ended up being the best-selling album of 1978 in the Soviet Union.
The Best Of ABBA was rearranged for the UK and other markets, but that involves a new release at the time - "Fernando" - a single released prior to the album "Arrival”…
Hello again Matt
I'm so glad to see You return with reaction to more ABBA songs
now with the self-titled album 'ABBA'
"Mamma Mía" (1975)
for me is the best pure pop If someone ask me for what is a pop song, i give this video and song
"Mamma Mía" have all elements: catchy melodies, more hooks, beauty voices and harmonies, and a distintive sound with a marimba; it's funny, it's adictive, It's a great song It could be in my Top 10 of all ABBA songs
"Mamma Mía" have a story
ABBA was recording their third album, the self-titled "ABBA", and "Mamma Mia" was the last song recorded
ABBA filmed four videos in only two days to promote their songs; "Mamma Mía was one of these; Also ABBA lunch a new single, but "Mamma Mía" wasn't choose
There is an iconic official video for which in Australia they asked that "Mamma Mía" be released as a single
finally ABBA did it, and it was #1 in Australia for 10 weeks and ABBAmania woke up there
When the single was released in UK, it had a slow but steady rise to #1 and from there toppling none other than 'Bohemian Rhapsody' by Queen in the end of January 1976 (exactly 47 years ago)
"Mamma Mía" was recorded more before than "Bohemian Rhapsody", but was released much later as a single
"Mamma mia" is follow by the phrase
'here I go again' ,
in "Bohemian Rhapsody" the following phrase is 'let me go'
"Mamma Mia" together with their predecessor "S.O.S." are the two songs that gave ABBA its musical identity as a pop group
With both songs ABBA find your musical identity as a pop group, and began ABBA's great series of more than 20 worldwide hits for seven consecutive years consecutives
I hope to see you in next reaction to ABBA
My best regards from
Buenos Aires Argentina 🇦🇷
South America
P.S.: "Mamma Mia" also is a tittle of a great musical and of two succesful movies, inspired in all ABBA songs and directed by ABBA songwriters"
the marimbas that match the piano riff was a last minute decision during the recording proccess.everything so perfectly crafted that stood the test of time for nealy 5 decades.
There’s nothing to say about Mamma Mia that hasn’t already been said. This is just for the algorithm.
The third album is the culmination of their early years. There are still songs reminiscent of the Waterloo album, but other songs like Mamma Mia mark the beginning of 'the ABBA sound'. Great production, with the women at the forefront and the guys in a supporting role. This song was huge. Also check out the music videos in your spare time, they are an essential part of the experience.
Yeah great song, ABBA really put it all together here- such a well crafted song. Thanks Matt 👍
long time ABBA fan (did a remix of their disco hit "Kisses of Fire"). Very versatile group!
It's one of those works that is already part of pop culture... The song, the video (even the musicals and the movies).
Take care Matt... See ya
Love ❤️ from Chile 🇨🇱👍
Everything came together on this track and probably ranks as one of their best. From the stripped back effect at the beginning of the chorus through to the full instrumentation at the end.
You´re absolutely right - the production and arrangements AND the lyrics on Mamma Mia and this whole album is a big step up quality wise for ABBA! Just wait for what´s coming to you! ;-)
It's been fun watching your reaction videos regarding ABBA's catalogue. What strikes me is that you put a lot of focus on the lyrics. I believe that with ABBA the lyrics are not the most important aspect of their songs. The melodies and the music always come first with them. The sounds of the words and their rhythm were equally important as the music they were put to. Especially in the early days this was the case. Later on however their songs became deeper in meaning and also more emotional, when they went through their respective divorces. A typical feature is that they often told a story in their songs and "painted images", almost like describing scenes from a movie.
I'm looking forward to your upcoming reactions to their songs, covering both the hits and the hidden gems on their albums!
