The only problem I would mention about using clear tubing for water hoses is that it allows sunlight to come through. This can promote algae growth. If you want to use clear tubing then just dry fit some PVC pile to sleeve it in. I have 20 IBC totes in stacks to catch rainwater and every single one is painted black to prevent algae. You also might think about a gate valve in the line further back so you can cut off the water for maintenance work near the cages.

Hi gary and Mel.little important tip for you.fix a top plate all along the top of the beam just like you did on the cabin framing. Just keep the joints staggered away from the beam joints. This will strengthen the beam from pulling the joints opening up.then fix you roof spars onto the top plate of your cabin and the plate on your beam .if need be screw into you roof spars also then this should tye everything together .maybe easier to take first row of sheathing off your cabin roof for easy access fixing you decking roof spars.take care.

Yes! I thought the same thing. Tie the porch roof into the house rafters vs the roof. That’d keep the whole structure sturdy no matter how much wind they get.

@@chrissyfrancis8952 I mentioned the need to stagger the seams in a prior email. They are learning and we will teach them. She is brave and he is trying hard. There are just certain things you cannot skimp out on and proper structure is one of them. they mentioned they have bad storms there occasionally so I hope they use hurricane straps going from the beam to the rafters and from the beam to the posts. They only screwed down the posts and did not use BOLTS to attach it to the porch structure.

@@GoodwillCriminalsOfDallas Gary always uses Hurricane straps. They also mock up their structures, then take them apart to finish cuts & then secure it permanently bc they’re learning as they go. It’s literally twice the work, but Gary(as you know) is OCD. Imperfection would drive him crazy. My mom is the same way.

Hello Gary and Mel. I worked with I man that retired about 2 years ago. Every time he was thinking about writing a program for his CNC lathe, he would scratch his chin just like you do when you are thinking about how to explain what you are thinking. It's so funny, but I know it is necessary.

G’day Gary and Mel, Gary reminds me of when I was building, thinking about how things will be on the build. I would get flooded with all sorts of ideas and become distracted muddling through. One day I changed that behavior to planning to scale on paper based on all measurements of the situation. I used the measurements to create profiles then would draw up a diagram on a 1/10 th scale, my maths isn’t that good so scaling up from a 1/10 to full scale was easier in the metric system. If it was furniture then the scale would be a bit bigger to get very concise measurements. Doing those diagrams confirmed angles and the length of timers needed. This limited wastage as I bought the just longer length of Romberg that I needed. I hated 3’ off cuts, such a waste. The process also helped me maintain focus. I called it building on paper first. I also developed the habit of sketching ideas as they popped for later to be developed. Having a sketch pad nearby was a great help. Stay safe and healthy, I enjoy your sharing.

Your hen with the bald patch looks like it needs a chicken saddle it protects the hens from an over eager Rooster and stops the other hens from pecking the bald area.

To make the measuring of the rafter easier just break it up into pieces. First, how far past the rafter are you going to go. Second, from the beam to the edge of the roof. Finally, from the edge to the highest point on the roof, you are going to go. I do not recall what the pitch of your roof is but that is one thing you will need to know for your calculations. The easiest way to figure out the angle at the top you need to cut is to stretch a line from a board on the beam that is the thickness of the rafter. I would guess 2x8 would do it. Put the other end on the main roof at the top height of the rafters. Get two pieces of lumber about 3 feet long and peg them together at one end in the center with a bolt and wing washer. One board needs to be a 2x8 and the other a 2x4. Go up to the roof and set the V-measure device next to the string. Raise it to a few feet from the end of the string lining up next to the wing nut. Now one of the boards till it lines up with the string and tighten down the wing nut. What you have now is the angle at all of the 2x8 boards will need to be cut to have the top of the rafters die out into the roof.
Once you have the board angle cut you only need to set a 4-foot board on the end of the big beam and angle it so it aligns with the string and then slide it out till the overhang is what you want to achieve. this will allow you to trace the birdmouth. There are official ways to do this but it is a visual technique if you have trouble with the other regular method using a square to figure it out. If I am not clear on some thing I just watch a UA-cam video. You should go watch the 3 videos by Larry Haun. He was a master builder of the old-school variety that was very good at explaining things to the untrained folks.

Oh if you turn it long ways you can split it into 3 stalls and use the two closest to the chicken run for your meat birds. And later it could be for ducks and turkeys or whatever and the end stall can be the goat house and in front you can put a run with rocks and climbing stuff for the goats to play on. Or have the center one open as a walk through with a gate at the back that you can open to a electric fence area later. And have a meat bird coop on one side and the goat house on the other. Having the center open it will give them shade and shelter from rain while still being able to be outside. Having the run/play yard in the front will give you hours of entertainment from the house.

I sided a cover it shed with metal Perlins and vinyl siding. It was on our property for 17 years. It held up really well. I had earth screw tie downs. An engineer certified it as good for hurricane winds of 115 mph. It withstood several hurricanes right on the edge of Long Island Sound. Our shed had the 2 inch metal poles. But your structure should be quite workable and sturdy. The metal Perlins were screwed into the tubular steel. Looking forward to this coop!

Wondering why you’re waiting to put the deck boards down? They’d anchor the deck before you add the roof. The deck boards will be the easiest part of this build, just laying them & spacing them(we always made a spacer out of spar pieces of wood) then ran the boards, cut the ends then started with the ends on the next row. Is it the cost all at once? Or a shortage of supplies? Mel, you got brave but I’d never be up there until the boards were down. I’d be frozen outside the slider, white knuckled grasping on I’d have to be pried off the door jam.
