I really liked this vid Dan. I always wonder if I'm spending enough time trying something, or wondering when to switch it up. I appreciate your insight and find it helpful to hear what others do. I agree... getting skunked is part of the process, and only makes us want to get back out there all the sooner! Thanks again!
Great video! I’ve recently got back into my fly fishing for about 6 months now and I got ‘skunked’ for the first time last weekend and yep - it’s upsetting. I’m gonna try out some of your advice - the leader weight being one that interested me the most. Thanks again for the great advice 👍
On the tippet, I fish the swift river below the quabbin in mass, I run a 3wt fiberglass rod with a 7x tippet. I used to run a 4x and a 5x but they would spook too easily. Dropped down to a 7x and have gotten a lot more takes
Stumbled on your channel & a ton of great information,my go to line for still water is my 5 weight Cortland Cammo Line paired with 6' of 4X or 5X Fluorocarbon tippet for streamers & a floating Line for nymphing or indicator midging,my favorite flies are a tadem bugger rig 1 light & 1 dark ,great video & great information
I basically have one fly that i use, sometimes 2, at the moment i have no reason to change it because I outfish most people every time, even guys who are trolling. I just sit there, cast out a sinking line with a 4-5 ft leader and unweighted fly, finger roll, pause, when line gets vertical ish, recast, they usually hit it in the middle half of the retrieve, trolling it can also work if you give some action and stops.
You definitely have a good mix of flies. My go to fly in cold water is a white marabou or spey streamer on a sink-tip line. Lake fish cruise all over the place. Downed trees, points, ledges & humps are good places to try. My name's Dan too...
The still water near me is small deep high elevation reservoirs. There is hardly any current or water movement in them. So I can’t understand how to fish nymphs or dry flys. If I strip them it looks unnatural but I can’t just let my fly sit still all day
Next time fishing nymphs in this type of current, slowly bring the fly set up back to you with a slow finger-roll (figure eight retrieve). Very slow - and very effective
Awesome information, still waters can be mysterious, unlike moving water hard to find structure & fishy places,I carry another line,a clear intermediate for fishing over submerged weed beds or structure, tie 2 different colors of buggers & works sometimes, tight lines & bent rods 🤘
I know quite a few stillwater fishers who will painstakingly examine the waters, look under rocks, check the surface for shucks.... then fish a chirominid. Every time. They might have 1/2 dozen rods all set up... they they're ALL set up with indicators for chronie fishing. And they have flyboxes filled with literally HUNDREDS of... chrominids. Weird....
I’ve only ever fly fished my lake. Caught baby baby bluegill and crappie, but nothing more. I’d like another fly fisherman to fish with so I can get many tips and tricks
Nice! That lake has been slow as of late...every time the stocking reports shows the big lunkers stocked, there is a local group that illegally harvest the fish (I've seen this happen on multiple occasions). I didn't even fish it once this year sadly
If I don't over inflate it by a half pound, it starts to get a bit soft. Sometimes the temp swing is so great - it just turns into a taco tube once the sun goes down...Lol
Sound, practical advice, as usual, sir. Well done.
Thank you!

Awesome vid 👌 I'm in alberta and I love watching you, just wish I had lakes like that close to me 🥲
Thank you! I appreciate that! Cheers! I hope you are well up in Alberta! :))

Great video Dan 👍
Thank you!
Dan have you ever been to cooper lake around cle elum? Very pretty lake with a variety of trout in it.
I have not - thank you so much for the tip!
You should come up north to the FF only lake near Anacortes. I’m sure you’ve fished it before but it’s been pretty good this spring.
I’ll have to check it out!
I’ve only ever fly fished my lake. Caught baby baby bluegill and crappie, but nothing more. I’d like another fly fisherman to fish with so I can get many tips and tricks
Nice! Well - you have come to the right place! My channel is loaded full of helpful vids. Cheers!
Got skunked at a lake the past three times I’ve fished there. Went today and tried something new out and caught an 18” rainbow trout:)
Nice! That lake has been slow as of late...every time the stocking reports shows the big lunkers stocked, there is a local group that illegally harvest the fish (I've seen this happen on multiple occasions). I didn't even fish it once this year sadly
Thank you for the knowledge! By the way what jacket is that, looks very nice!
Thank you!
You bet!
@@FlyFishDan hey are you going to be at the Washington sportsman show this weekend?
Nice video , good tips , subscribed .
Welcome to my channel!
Love the video. I had a question and doing research it’s hard to see. With your flies do you use barbless or barbed flies?
How does air presser hold up in your u boat since its either after ice out or before the pond ices up
If I don't over inflate it by a half pound, it starts to get a bit soft. Sometimes the temp swing is so great - it just turns into a taco tube once the sun goes down...Lol
Hey Dan
When fish are off the bite and on daphnia do you use blob flies to imitate balls of daphnia?
Hey there - occasionally I have used the mop fly and that seems to work well when the bite is slow or off.
Are you fishing the Damselfly nymphs below an indicator or on the sinking line?
I have - it's effective way, especially if you give it a bit of slow movement.
Good stuff Dan, where did you get your bamboo net ? Looks really nice
Thanks! Hellbender nets, upstream is what my wife got me for Christmas :))
Thanks, she's a keeper
Are you located in Oregon?
I am up in Washington State - but fly fish all over the PNW. Cheers!
Great videos Dan! What float tube are you using?
Thank you Jesse! I use the Outcast 'FAT CAT' float tube. Great boat!
Fishing right now in England just paid £50 for a ticket no joy lol
That's pricey! Hopefully you got into some fish!
would be more enjoyable with less cuts when you get a bite
One of my earlier videos, you’ll see my editing has improved substantially since then. Thanks for tuning in!
