I prefer this type of screen. It is far better for photography than those selfie screens. Those selfie screens belong to cameras that are for teenagers, videographers and vloggers, not for photographers.

Thank you! Did my best in short amount of time. Still plenty to test. I always look at the specs and think what would I really want to know - after all things like ISO range are pretty easy to Google. I try to just mix up specs with opinion and background and chuck in a test or two were I can. Still learning the right formula for these videos, but aim to get better with each one.

It’s always so hard filming yourself, remembering everything about the camera you can (and all the other cameras that it will compete with), trying to use it and get examples showing how it works and menu/shooting screens etc. All in a couple of hours. Sadly can’t do everything due to time and it would have been a longer video. Then it’s a drive home to spend hours editing to get it uploaded whilst it’s still relevant. A few words like yours make it all worthwhile. So thank you very much. Hope to get more done detail in full review coming soon.

The eye focus detection has been hugely improved with the latest firmware 3.20. Simply a great camera in a class by itself, that will change the way you shoot both video and photos for the better. Nice garden!
Flicker reduction comes with an on/off option. Always good to give the consumer the freedom of options. I’m just wondering who actually prefers having a dizzying flicker in their EVF. “I didn’t realize that I missed the headache inducing flicker whenever under florescent light until it wasn’t there anymore. Thank you Fuji for giving me the option.”
Excellent video. I have pre-ordered mine along with the VG-XT3 grip. This will join my X-Pro2 and X-T2. Really Looking forward to picking it up and also to more videos and full reviews.
It all depends on where you live of course. Most big cities will have a good dealer, one you may already know and trust, and you can pop in to see them. I live in London in the UK and I have a great dealer about 80 miles away and I just gave him a call. Other than that I have heard that Adorama and B&H in the USA are good, or of course many UA-cam presenters have a direct link on their pages. Good Luck.
Perfectly structured presentation! One question, does the X-T3 battery grip comes with a "boost" mode same as for the X-T2? If it does not, trying to think if it makes sense to buy it. In the X-T2 you knew that you could get the extra performance with it, so it was kinda worth it.
Yup. Nothing mentioned during presentation. As far as I know it is purely extra power and ergonomics. It’ll shoot at 11fps with mechanical, 20fps electronic and up to 30fps electronic at a 1.25x crop

Great review, thanks. Fuji really delivered a great camera here and knowing Fuji updates, it's just going to be better and better. Personally, I am now excited about the xh2, love the bigger body/grip and the ibis which will be helpful for me doing video of cars interior.
Supposedly you need a 9V charger or powerbank to be able to power the camera when it's on (it probably uses Quick Charge 3.0), a normal 5V powerbank will not be enough to power the camera when it's on (but will charge the battery when it's off).
3:20 hahaha that eye AF will never be used like that for portrait, did you ever saw a model move like this ! Even kids dont run around like that ! I had a good laughs I mean seing the AF trying to follow you was quite impressive and it actually did a really good job.
Everyone! We've found the guy that has never seen Mick Jagger dance! Kids run all over the place the second you get a camera out. But Eye AF is much more than portraits. See my video on the Sony 400mm f/2.8 lens... I used Eye AF on the Sony A9 during a football game and it's impressive. Also in the example it was in movie mode, so an extreme test of how it would track a subject in video... And yes, it did well as I was deliberately being very erratic... No pint just standing there wobbling my head and shutting my eyes occasionally ... Something would be seriously wrong if it couldn't keep up with that. And with the 30fps blackout free shooting its a test for some tracking erratic movement... A boxer taking quick steps to left and right, moving head to dodge a punch... Footballer running a few steps forward or back to take a penalty, basketball player bouncing twice then turning head to fake a pass, tennis player taking a couple of side steps before hitting the ball, formula one drive on the podium jumping up and down whilst shaking a bottle of champagne, rugby player running forward them side stepping quickly and side stepping a tackle... Etc
You got me... I did it on purpose. In fact I have full control over my limbs and head and actually was totally in command of what I was doing. Having used a Sony A9 to photograph a football game and have the eye-af track a players eye whilst they are running I think it’s a perfectly valid test. Eye AF isn’t just for portraits. See my 200mm f/2 review to see the Eye-AF working in a football training session and then come back and tell me that moving around quickly isn’t a valid test. Again, as I said in the previous reply, Eye-AF isn’t for just a model standing there turning a head slightly... it’s for documentary shots, it’s for events, concerts and weddings where people are dancing, moving around in crowds, walking along the street. It’s for sports, it’s for kids running around. Want to see Eye-AF work whilst someone wafts their hair from side to side? Great 👍 want to test it to the limit of what it is actually capable of to separate different camera brands and firmware? Then you do more than move your head from side to side and flick your hair.
Vlogging part looks good. Quick af back to the face after moving the camera away and no crazy aperture hopping to create abrupt exposure changes. Exposure transitions look good to me.
Nice review! Concerning the X-T3 in video mode, could we attache a SSD though the USB C port and use it as an external recorder like the new black magic?
Awesome review. Definitely very informative to what I needed to find out about the video recording. Especially how much of a crop any of the video settings would render. X-T3 is quite impressive. It's so affordable as well and the built-in mic is really good. And you couldn't hear any focusing motor while you switched the camera to the garden and back to your face.
Good review. The updates are a little overwhelming on these new cameras. I hated hearing you say XH2 - I've hardly scratched the surface with my XH1. Plenty of room to grow with that one, though - holding off on buying anything new, even though the XT3 definitely looks like a nice addition. One question - same batteries as in XT2 and XH1?

I need to really test the burst shooting modes to see where the break points are, but the quoted numbers are respectable 11fps, 145 JPEG 36 raw... As I said, this was just a couple of hours with the camera. I’ll run some more test in the full review
Sony A7 III in to an Atomos Shogun with Alister Chapman’s ‘Venice’ LUT hard baked in. The white balance is a little off in a couple of shots as the weather kept changing from bright but overcast to very dark and overcast.
Also it was shot in 4K then output for UA-cam at 1080. This allows me to crop in when needed, but the full frame 4K downsampled to 1080 always looks so crisp!
It does. Quite a nice tone, but it was a very quiet environment. It did better than I thought qa it was slightly windy and there was a few things you could hear in the distance that it has managed to avoid really picking up. Internal mics always tend to sound good until they are in a noisy environment - that's when you really see how well tuned to the frequency of human speaking they are. Going to add it to the list of things to test
great detailed video, I am still wondering if we really needed an X t3 so quickly the X t2 is barely 2 years old... It feels like a rush move to get more people into video to join the fuji board... Ltely Fuji si super active making so many cameras, but they beceom all mostly so much alike, it'zs cool and disturbing at some point.
I spoke to Fujifilm at the event and what I inferred was that if they have the technology ready they will put it in a camera, and if it is a firmware feature they will update compatible cameras, as we have seen in the past. Usual cycle for a camera is 24-30 months these days, so the X-T3 is on schedule... it could have waited longer, but it looks like Fujifilm are trying to make the first move in the next round of APS-C mirrorless. The Sony A6500 is about due an upgrade and it can’t be long before Canon update its High end M-series cameras. X- H1, I think it was simply a case that the sensor and processor was available at the time of X-T3 development, but not when the X-H1 was. I’d imagine as a new line the X-H1 development would have started earlier, as well as being released earlier. As for too many cameras, my opinion is that they are on a roll and have been for a few years. With the full frame market seemingly the new battle ground there is a sizeable part of the market that Fujifilm could serve. It also helps explain the reason for having Chinese production - keep prices competitive
So why would IBIS matter, if you could use a stabilizer? I would think the stabilizer will have better performance when you really want your footage to be stabilized? It is nice to have the IBIS, but not necessary, and since Fuji brings the X-H line for video, there is not much reason for them to put IBIS in XT2. X-H2 then seems to be a video beast.
Yup - it’s the same as the GH5S. I think for anything very series people will use a tripod/monopod or 3-axis stabiliser. But for documentary ‘run and gun’ filmmaking IBIS is a huge benefit. I spoke to Fujifilm about the X-H1 and where it now sits. I’ll try and edit and upload the full interview in the next day or so. Basically they said that the intention was never for it to be ‘their video camera’ it was simply received that way because of the new video features, IBIS and Eterna that it was received that way. You’re right about the X-H2: with the sensor and processor of the X-T3, and IBIS it could be an incredible camera... but they would need to make sure headphone and mic sockets are also 3.5mm and on the side
Phil Jones65 people have to wait for X-H2 to get IBIS🤣. As for flip screen, not a big deal to me, won't use it for vlog or selfie anyway. So unless it has huge low light performance improved, I'm still pretty satisfied with my XT2.
If you watch the video Fujifilm explain why they didn’t opt for fully articulated front screen. Basically it gives more room for those ports on the side whilst maintaining the size of the camera. Apparently the hinge would add a few mm, but they wanted to maintain the size. As they say, they would have been equally moaned at by people saying ‘I don’t want an articulated screen, I would’ve preferred a slightly smaller camera’. Personally think the reason Canon are taking a hammering is that Nikon and Sony have it in full frame, as Fujifilm have it on the X-H1 for those that really need it. I’ll upload my whole interview with Fujifilm in the next day or so - i asked about where this camera now leaves the X-H1 and a few other things including ‘Made In China’ etc
We were told that low light exposures were improved due to the new sensor. They showed some examples of long exposures looking cleaner especially. It will be one of the things I’ll look at very closely in a full test as I know it will be a big factor for a lot of people with the X-T2
Very good presentation, best I've seen and up there with dpreview. Really liking this camera, been a Nikon shooter for years but I like the creative freedom offered by full screen af and eaf, was tempted by Sony but never liked the ergonomics and weather sealing, (and it appears the Nikon Z6/7 has fallen short in this area). I'll probably hire a xt3 when launched along with a 56m 1.2 and 100-400, just wish Fuji would bring out some 1.4 zooms to counter DoF issues like they've done with their primes.
Thanks Tony! Appreciate your comments! Definitely give the X-T3 a try in a few weeks. I think as a Nikon shooter you’ll really enjoy it if you’re looking for a SLR style mirrorless. I’ve always been a big fan of Fujifilm handling - they nailed it with their early cameras - the X100 and X-Pro1 then the X-T1 came along. Every version since then as just been refined incrementally whilst the image quality and features go along with it. There is a decent lens line-up, I’m sure there will be more coming. The 200mm lens was there, . It wasn’t a final sample, but I was just too busy to whack it on the camera and try it out

If the AF and lack of viewfinder blackout works like it looks like it could do, then it maybe a great camera for sports. As you say, lowlight AF could be the only issue. Let’s wait for some more tests to come through!
How’s the silver on the X-T3 compare to the silver-graphite X-T2? I paid the extra $200 for the S-G T2 and didn’t really like it. It looked like a metal camera body coated to simulate plastic. I didn’t get that and worse had to pay for it.
It looks ok from a distance - better than the X-T100. I had the black version this week and think I prefer it. It doesn’t look quite as cool, but as you say, it’s not fooling many people when you get up close.
As a former XT-1 user and (2) XT-2's owner who shoots professionally but does not do video I am wondering if I should pick one up. Waiting to see if it is a true upgrade in low light performance. I shoot some conventions where flash is not permitted.
That's a good question. This camera seems to be more geared towards video makers rather than photographers , or should I say hybrid users. I wish it was more photography centered and drop the video capabilities so it would be cheaper and more usable for someone like myself who has no interest in video. The low light capabilities are a interest more so than the tech about the sensor for the images look the same to me as it's old one
Raoul Simon yes I agree. I will probably wait and see what people say after the camera has been around a little. I saw a big difference from the XT1 to the 2 in performance dual card slots for convention use. My GFX is still my studio and slow go product and model shoot camera that replaced my old Nikon D800 but my D4s with big glass is still my sports and low light camera. All in all my XT2’s are the most fun and all around best handling cameras. I appreciate video and love to see good cinematography but I don’t have the patience and other people deal with that at conventions. One of the upgrades I love is seeing is the pull out push in lock diopter like on my nikons. I am always moving it at conventions and it takes me a few seconds to figure out why my camera is not auto focusing. Conventions are fast moving and even a few seconds can make a difference between getting the shot and missing it

Not the fastest, but even so I also expected it to be a little better. It was quite overcast and about 5:30pm - so not very light. Add that I naturally squint a lot and it may have caused it some difficulty. I’ll do some more thorough testing for the full review and a comparison with some other cameras if I can

Next time can you do an actual eye AF demo for the PHOTO side? I’m assuming it might be a tad slower for video...especially 4K. Also it’d be nice to see if it’s as tack sharp as Sony for continuous & single shot in an outdoor photo shoot. Pleaseeeee do that thanks
Of course... this was merely a first look. Lots to look at and just a couple of hours to check as much as possible. Also prioritised video simply because having eye AF in video is a big deal as most don’t have it. Thanks for feedback. Will 100% make sure it is in the full test... also different eyes and faces. I’ve fairly small eyes and squint - in addition it was late afternoon on a very overcast day.

Sometimes manufacturers have pre-production cameras and we are very limited with what we can do - at which point it is just talking about specs and offering an opinion. Some reviewers have the cameras long far in advance so can do far more detailed first looks that are basically full reviews. So it varies quite a lot. Appreciate the subscription and feedback!
I don't do much vlogging, but I do lots of video recording where I'm speaking into the camera. There is a lot to like about this camera, but the non-swiveling LCD screen is a bit disappointing. Still, the Fuji rep's point is well taken that most of us doing video recording are going to have some sort of HD monitor anyway. It's starting to look like my decision is coming down to the GH5 or the X-T3. TBH, I'm sort of leaning towards the X-T3 because I like the looks. I know that's a terrible reason to buy a camera, but it's visually appealing.
That current screen is far better for photographers. So a kind request for you video people: stop demanding selfie screen on every camera. I want this one, it makes so much easier and sturdier to take low down and high up portrait orientation shots than the selfie screens do.
Buying a camera because of the way it looks is absolutely a good reason, especially if it's a close decision like in your case. Never discount the way a camera makes you feel when using it. The aesthetics have a lot to do with how a camera makes me feel. I've heard many people say that after they got their Fuji camera, it made them want to go out shooting more often and that shooting was fun again. I think the aesthetics and ergonomics, along with the guts of the camera, have a lot to do with that feeling. Besides, when you're spending some serious coin on a camera, why not get something that looks nice? No one would buy a Mustang if it looked like a Pinto
I disagree. I don't shoot video and my current anon 60D has a fully articulating screen that I use way more than I ever thought I would when I first got the camera. Getting really low to the ground and pointing up is one such instance that this camera would not be able to do as well as my Canon. I see what you're saying but trust me, a fully articulating screen only adds to the ease of use of a screen
I don't view the screen as a deal breaker. It appears to meet or exceed the GH5 in almost all other respects, except for battery life and the screen. I'll handle the battery the same way I do with my G7, buy purchasing a dummy battery and plugging it into the wall and keeping extra batteries on hand for when I'm mobile. I was planning on buying an HD monitor anyway, so I can view my video output from my desk without squinting at the screen. Eventually, I plan to get a fully motorized setup that I can control from where I'm filming.
Sounds like you have a pretty neat setup planned! It’s not too dissimilar for how I shoot the review videos in the studio: monitor off to one side. Sometimes you an app to adjust focus remotely (particularly with GH4, less so with Sony A7 III as obviously AF is much better). Occasionally I’ll even have the camera on a iFootage motorised slider so I can actually adjust the framing remotely from my phone
Nice review, still don't understand why this camera is sold so much with the 18-55. Ok, it is a much better than average kit lens but the xt-3 deserves more than that .. Such like the 1.4 primes and the 56 f1.2. Never bought any kit what so ever.. Always assembled my own setup.
Haha! It’s fine. It said it on the video as Fujifilm has said it during the presentation, but I think they too must have forgotten about the (excellent) Samsung NX1. I added the note as text to the video when I edited and realised the Samsung was both BSI and copper wiring
What a great review. This camera is looking great, I was eventually going to get a Sony APS-C camera but I have been waiting forever, they had overheating problems and other things. This looks like just the right size and with updated features that people want. The downside is the screen, it should have been a option to turn it up super bright mode in the camera settings and it should have been a flip-up screen on a hinge lifting it up to make it more usable. The side tilting thing I do not think people use that much. It also is a battery hog. On the other hand both of these issues can be compensated for so I do not see it as a big negative. If Sony does not deliver anything good in the next few months I am getting this camera. Full frame cameras are to big and expensive for my use and I have been waiting to long for Sony APS-C refresh of their cameras. I guess they do not feel that there is a big market any more for semi cheap APS-C cameras. What I do want to know more about is the video features, looking forward to that review.
I'm going to talk about this in my review which should be coming next week, but ito make the most of USB-C powering, not just charging, you want one that has 7v output.
It's quite subtle... But in my eyes its there. If I get time i’ll try and get a couple of bodies in and do some really pixel peeping tests colour tests. I was using the X-T100 recently and to be the colours just weren't quite the same as an X-Trans sensor. It could actually be an interesting video in itself 🤔
I’d suggest simply speed and processing power. The raw files would be huge. They would take a long time to read and write. Any in camera image styles would also require more processing power to be applied... I’m pretty sure neither display would come close to being able to show all of the information, and most people would struggle at home, although things are changing with HLG and HDR monitors etc. I’d also guess that there would be very marginal gains in very specific situations, so for now it wouldn’t be worth them doing. Very low level noise would probably account for some of that information in for some of the shadow detail at 16-but... ... and let’s be honest, the vast majority of photographers simply don’t need it
Yeah, it did ok. Slow mo looks nice, in-camera mic was surprisingly ok (though it was very quiet in terms of background noise) and the AF was perfectly good enough. Stabilisation was ok. It’s not ideal, but it’s certainly useable... even if I could see myself and was just pointing the lens roughly at my face. I honestly don’t think it’s a market that Fujifilm think about for the X-T3. The X-T100 has the front facing screen option, and at its price point is much more of a ‘vlogging’ camera.
Sorry... if it is doing a good job for you right now then stick with what you have. It’s easy to get gear envy. If something will make it easier for you to get the shots that you need then it may be worth it, but otherwise just stick with what you have... for now. The X-T20 is a great little camera and good value
I might hold off from my switch from Sony for the xh2. If XH2 has this new BSI sensor and processor plus dual ISO with IBIS and the same xt3 video codecs then I'll wait and pay for its premium! That plus the 16-55 2.8 would be the ultimate run n gun
What a great camera! Yo bad its only a apsc sensor :( When i got my A73 i was thinking to get the xt2 but i was so happy when i went to a ff that i don't want to go back!
Why do you still need a FF, Im switching from FF to this XT3 or Xpro3 if its released soon. The times where APSC where no good after iso800 are gone, they have the same MP and 1.4 and even affordable manual F0.95 prime to create DOF bokeh shot. Really the need for FF times are gone if you ask me.
XT3 is actually 1500 vs 1999, first you save 500$ on the body and then compare the lens price, thats where you really break the bank ! If you want 2 to 3 lens you end up with a kit that cost more like 2k to 5K more in the FF and the weight and size is also considerable. Dont get me wrong, a couple of years ago when APSC iso was not usable past iso800 I jumped into FF with no regrets at all. But now you need to look at the fact that APSC like the XT3 can perform like a FF if you look at final image result for a fraction of the cost and size. Im currently full geared in FF but im selling to move over to the XT3 since for me its the first camera that match my needs in the APSC sensor performance, and they will only get betters in the future years.
Fujifilm needs to correct the long-standing firmware blunder in the X-T1, X-T2, and X-T3. Namely, the Fuji firmware resets the self-timer EVERY time the cameras go to sleep or are turned off. This is a huge pain for tripod shooters. Fuji simply needs to include a menu item for the self-timer that will RESET or NO RESET. Let's fix this blunder, Fujifilm.

The more positive feedback I hear about this camera, the more I feel validated making the switch from Canon. I don't even have the camera yet and I already know it outperforms Canon in many categories. Glad I defected
I’ve been wondering why a camera company that wishes to be taken seriously has such a fascination with playing with a menagerie of various shades of silver. Makes their camera line appear to be toys, which as a committed Fuji fan, they are not. One can purchase a 20 year old vintage Leitz lens and it will match the latest M-10P. Leica is the Wimbledon of cameras and there is something to be said for that. Selling cameras with 20 year old technology for $8000 body only is an achievement not to be argued with. There was a camera company a few years ago that produced a consumer level dog of a camera. It wasn’t selling so they came out with a blood red version. Fortunately for the rest of us they only sold 7 of them and discontinued the silly idea. Fuji should come out with ONE silver for all its bodies and lenses and stick to it across the entire line. It sends a message of confidence and stability. “If you want a camera to match your sporting shoes then you are just going to have to look elsewhere. This bugged me enough that I called Fuji and asked. I was told, “people have asked for it.” I didn’t buy this for a second. It was obviously the sort of embarrassed answer one gives when they have no good answer, i.e., blame some market study. “It’s not our fault. We’ve giving people what they want.” Bollocks. I suspect Fuji hired the son-in-law of some top executive to run the design department who has no clue regarding the camera culture but graduated with a degree in fashion design. Now no one is willing to suggest firing him.
I tried everything i could to convince myself that fuji apsc will be as good as ff camera but i failed. Although my xt2 is a very comfortable camera to use but still cannot beat the IQ of my quirky A7ii. So i still keep both only use sony more often
Since writing I traded in my black T2 for a silver T3. It is more silvery than the silver/graphite T2. Since I had a black T2 and still have a black H1 and T20 I thought I’d go full retro. I do remember getting comments about my silver 100F and sil/graph T2 from people on the street. They universally thought both “old film cameras,” and for whatever strange archetypal symbols knocking around in their heads they always seemed somewhat less concerned why a complete stranger wanted to take their picture. “Silver=money, tin man, trust...black=death, nazis, evil.” Their natural paranoid suspicions seemed diverted for the moment by the camera itself. I’m sure their thoughts eventually turned to wondering what kind of weirdo still shoots film but by that time I’m long gone. “Oh yes, he must be some kind of reclusive luddite.”
Video is unusable without using an external gimball due lack of IBIS, your selfie filming bit is completely shaky and unusable. You don't mention that this camera splits video recordings in 4GB chunks because Fuji can only support FAT32. 20min 4K60 record limit is a shame. Battery life is way too short and means one would require using the hugely overpriced battery grip. The actual bitrate savings using H265 are unknown and confusing. Fuji's excuse for not including a flip out display is a complete lie, they could easily fit all those ports and fit a flip out display without making the device bigger. The only reason Fuji don't include the flip out display is because Fuji is too lazy to change the mold and they don't actually know what the consumers want.
Yup, I should have mentioned the FAT32 format. It’s annoying for anyone that shoots longer form video. Hands up I simply forgot to mention it, but plan to do a video like this just dedicated to the cameras video features when I have it for review. There are All-I and Long GOP Codecs - I’ll point the X-T3 at a TV screen showing the same video a few times and see just how long you can get from each codec. All-I will no doubt look impressive, but given that most video ends up on UA-cam Long GOP should be fine for the majority. I’d suggest that for those who it isn’t fine and demand more, they would probably want to go ProRes via a recorder anyway. And the video whilst walking - it’s very wobbly without IBIS or a gimbal - that’s why I did the little test. 20min 4K 60P vs 29:59 4K 30P - interesting to see how much real world difference this makes to people. Neither are enough for a full wedding service (for example), or for a theatre performance. Interviews could be a problem, but then you may be recording for hours so the difference is very relative to the subject. I wish they’d switch to ExFAT though... could this be done via a firmware update?
@@Photogearnews Hi thanks for checking all these things, I think your X-T3 video is probably the best on UA-cam. Yes please ask Fuji if they will add exFAT instead of FAT32 in a firmware update to avoid the 4GB file chunk splitting. Please ask Fuji why they have a 20min limit at 4K60 is it due to them thinking the camera will overheat if filming more than that? Does that mean users should not just keep filming 20min of 4K60 again and again right after each other because the camera will overheat? Can you ask Fuji why they put a 30min limit when EU supposedly won't have the 30min tax anyway by the end of this year? And is there any way a user can unlock those 20min and 30min limits to make recording unlimited? Myself personally I cannot buy a camera that has recording limits, the GH5 had no limits and was released nearly 2 years ago so I don't quite understand why no other camera manufacturer provides unlimited recording. I often record interviews in one shot that are much longer than 30min, how about this question for Fuji, what if the user uses the battery grip, is there any chance that (perhaps due heat dissipation from battery grip, Fuji might unlock unlimited recording with the grip? Another thing maybe would be good to ask Fuji, is can they add object video AF tracking? As far as I saw in other hands on videos, it seems face/eye tracking is working OK but there is no way to tap on objects to have the AF system track those. I would expect though that if Face tracking works then in theory a firmware update might add object tracking too? Anyways I believe them not including IBIS, flip out display and a larger battery is a shame but I can perhaps hope Fuji doesn't make those same mistakes with X-H2 and hopetfully Fuji fixes all those 3 things in X-H2. Also to provide unlimited recording support in X-H2. My questions about H265 bitrates is because as far as I understand the purpose of H265 is to save on bandwidth. My hope is that a strong H265 encoder in a camera can perhaps encode the same quality at half the bitrate using H265 compared with H264. So perhaps 4K60 could be 75-100mbit/s in H265 about the same quality as 150-200mbit/s in H264. Just it doesn't look like bitrate savings are achieved on the X-T3 when chosing the H265 codec. It actually looks like the highest bitrates are encoded in H265.
Good questions! I may see if I can arrange an interview in the coming weeks. As we know Fujifilm are excellent at adding features to cameras rather than waiting for a new camera. I’d imagine the 20min limit would be because of overheating. It may also be that the limit of the processing buffer is reached at that limit - just a guess, but more likely heat. I think Panasonic would have almost certainly had to add in the cost of unlimited recording in the GH5... at which point you have a weigh up the extra cost versus the potential extra sales from removing the limit. Fujifilm are really fighting with this camera as competition is fierce right now with Full Frame seemingly soon to become the new normal. I guess hitting a price point was very important so Chinese manufacture and the avoiding the import duty by having the time restrictions helps keep that price down. I’ve not heard about the removal of the duty on video cameras. I would guess this could be removed via firmware, but would this then open up a legal/tax issue. Would all the camera then be liable for historical payments? I’ve no idea
@@Photogearnews yes I heard Fuji is good at firmware updates, so I think it would be good to ask them if there is any chance they can fix in firmware update: - exFAT for no 4GB chunks - allow unlock unlimited recording (even if that costs a certain fee for a plugin) - Tap on any object AF tracking If the 20min limit for 4K60 is due to heat, then what happens to a user who keeps shooting 20min clips one after the other? Will there be an overheating warning to appear on the display asking the user to pause for a while and let the camera cool off before recording more? Seems could be a big issue for some. I read somewhere online that the EU tax expires by the end of the year, if the tax is the reson for Fuji to put the 30min limit, then maybe Fuji would know best if that tax is really expiring by the end of the year. And how much is the tax per camera? Since perhaps 1/3rd of their cameras are even sold in Europe, why restrict all the users from outside the EU and why not allow EU users pay that tax if they want to unlock unlimited recording? Sony has some sort of "cheat code" people can find in "unofficial forums" which removes the 30min limit on some of their APS-C cameras I think like the A6300 and A6500. Probably also that "unofficial code" removes the recording limit on A7Sii, A7ii, A7Rii, A7Riii, A9 and A7iii. Can Fuji also provide such "unofficial code" to remove the recording limit?
I've always considered the XT series more photographer centric with some nice video features. Sounds like you need to look for something that is more video centric.

Yup... Seems standard on the higher end Nikons. Incredibly (as a longtime Nikon user) I've never noticed or paid that much attention. Still surprised its not more common generally
Let's get real, the battery-life is too low, the video colour looks terrible, the dynamic-range seems limited, and the whole picture looks somewhat washed-out, and mild smudging is evident throughout. Check the codec and bitrate!
This wasn't a test for colour - from memory it was in Eterna, with the WB on auto. Eterna is a fairly flat profile and it was an overcast day. But again, I didn't mention colour for video because this is a first look video (started in the title) not full review. It was in Long GOP (from what I remeber) not All-I. Dynamic range of quoted as 12EV in video - but again lets wait for a full test rather that judge it on a colour profile and seeing what we can actually get out the camera. Battery life... Yeah, could be better if you shoot video. But as I said with my Nikon Z6/Z7 preview... Most people can afford 5 secs to swap over a battery
Brave of Fuji and possibly unwise is producing this camera in China. With Trump threatening even more tariffs on China, I imagine both availability and price could be unstable in the future.
I think it depends on which goods/commodities face tariffs. Also it is only one market, albeit a sizeable one. You could argue the same with virtually any manufacturer who makes products in China. The fact is production is cheaper and that can be passed on to the consumer. The X-T3 price is competitive currently.
I was thinking the same thing. The fully articulating screen is the only thing I'm going to miss about my Canon 60D. I use it all the time when I shoot macro in the garden where I'm crouched down and pointing up. It's great for working in precarious positions
It’s a Sony manufactured sensor but a Fuji proprietary and patented design. I don’t think Sony would risk the scandal, the business or potential suites if they used their position to copy Fuji’s design. Japanese companies such as autos have a different culture than in the US and parts are often manufactured by competitors or even interchangeable between different makes.
It is most likely a pretty much ‘off the shelf’ Sony design that we will see in their next generation of A6XXX series cameras. Fujifilm and other brands will work with Sony to see what types of speed and features will be available in the next generation of sensors and they will work together to achieve what the market demands. A lot also depends on the actual machinery that fabricates the sensors and what they are capable of manufacturing. The Fujifilm design and patent comes in the form of the X-Trans array - not just in the actual placement of the array but the exact colour of the filter, which may slightly differ from the colour Sony or other brands use. The rest of the differences come from exactly what different manufactures can get from the sensors in terms of the processors and also the algorithms they use
Huh I'm disappointed to see, how bad the Eye AF still seems to be. Good enough to deem it a more interesting gimmick than before, but not good enough to really rely on that, when shooting a (single) person. But that's the point of an eye af. To allow you to forget about focusing alltogether. A real "auto" focus. If this doesn't work, as evident from this video, than users will fall back to their old focusing methods. Those which suck up 90% of your attention and photographic effort.
I think it depends on what you are doing. Portrait shoot, editorial shoot... will be fine. Not quite sure it will be useful for something like sports photography.
I'm not interested in sports, these chaps would be too far away anyway for an eye AF benefit. No, I'm worried about portrait and editorial style shooting. Seeing, that the AF square dances wildly around the iris, rather then resting on it. For portraits, it is not enough to just count hits (where an eye was detected) versus misses (where something totally off is focused on). I would also require, that the focusing is done on the iris, but not on the eyebrow or wherever else the Fuji eye-AF is randomly jumping over. I'm only afraid, that the precision may suffer from the focus square movement pattern I see. Then, the eye AF would no better than a plain face detect, with regards to precision. Detection rate is not the same as detection precision / focusing quality. I don't have a Sony A7 III yet, nor the not-even-anounced mini-A9 (APSC version thereof). But from the eye detect videos available for the A7 III, that seems to play in a different league still. But these are only vlogger videos usually. I'm very keen on a systematical shoot-out test, under same defined conditions, hopefully DPReview will do this.
Or you know... we could do it when we get the cameras next week. This is a first look. The comment about sports was with regard to the speed I was moving. Most portraits aren’t going to have people running or moving their heads as quickly as I was. Distance and lens will make a difference So far, better, but still room to improve compared to some of the competition, with the caveat that it depends what you are shooting.
Also having used the A9 + 400mm lens to shoot a football game, the eye-af could def be used. It was working for playing warming up, goalkeepers, players taking throw-ons... obviously didn’t work for faster movements, but there it switched to face detection
And to add this wasn’t a ‘test’ it was seeing how the detection worked based on the display. A test - which will be coming will be firing at moving subject a checking the focusing of say 50 shots and seeing how successful the actual images are, not just the box dancing around

I prefer this type of screen. It is far better for photography than those selfie screens. Those selfie screens belong to cameras that are for teenagers, videographers and vloggers, not for photographers.

I always look at the specs and think what would I really want to know - after all things like ISO range are pretty easy to Google. I try to just mix up specs with opinion and background and chuck in a test or two were I can.
Still learning the right formula for these videos, but aim to get better with each one.

Thanks Karl! It’s always so hard filming yourself, remembering everything about the camera you can (and all the other cameras that it will compete with), trying to use it and get examples showing how it works and menu/shooting screens etc. All in a couple of hours. Sadly can’t do everything due to time and it would have been a longer video. Then it’s a drive home to spend hours editing to get it uploaded whilst it’s still relevant.

The eye focus detection has been hugely improved with the latest firmware 3.20. Simply a great camera in a class by itself, that will change the way you shoot both video and photos for the better. Nice garden!
Flicker reduction comes with an on/off option. Always good to give the consumer the freedom of options. I’m just wondering who actually prefers having a dizzying flicker in their EVF. “I didn’t realize that I missed the headache inducing flicker whenever under florescent light until it wasn’t there anymore. Thank you Fuji for giving me the option.”

It all depends on where you live of course. Most big cities will have a good dealer, one you may already know and trust, and you can pop in to see them. I live in London in the UK and I have a great dealer about 80 miles away and I just gave him a call. One question, does the X-T3 battery grip comes with a "boost" mode same as for the X-T2? If it does not, trying to think if it makes sense to buy it. In the X-T2 you knew that you could get the extra performance with it, so it was kinda worth it.

Supposedly you need a 9V charger or powerbank to be able to power the camera when it's on (it probably uses Quick Charge 3.0), a normal 5V powerbank will not be enough to power the camera when it's on (but will charge the battery when it's off).
Yep... you can get those powerbanks now cheap enough on amazon. I’ve got one to power a MacBook via USB-C somewhere
3:20 hahaha that eye AF will never be used like that for portrait, did you ever saw a model move like this ! Even kids dont run around like that ! I had a good laughs I mean seing the AF trying to follow you was quite impressive and it actually did a really good job.

But Eye AF is much more than portraits.
See my video on the Sony 400mm f/2.8 lens... I used Eye AF on the Sony A9 during a football game and it's impressive.
Also in the example it was in movie mode, so an extreme test of how it would track a subject in video... And yes, it did well as I was deliberately being very erratic... No pint just standing there wobbling my head and shutting my eyes occasionally ... Something would be seriously wrong if it couldn't keep up with that.
And with the 30fps blackout free shooting its a test for some tracking erratic movement... A boxer taking quick steps to left and right, moving head to dodge a punch... Footballer running a few steps forward or back to take a penalty, basketball player bouncing twice then turning head to fake a pass, tennis player taking a couple of side steps before hitting the ball, formula one drive on the podium jumping up and down whilst shaking a bottle of champagne, rugby player running forward them side stepping quickly and side stepping a tackle... Etc
It was not exactly eye autofocus ,it was right eye based auto focus ,I agree with Ju Ma ,your test was nonsense or you did on purpose
You got me... I did it on purpose. In fact I have full control over my limbs and head and actually was totally in command of what I was doing.
Having used a Sony A9 to photograph a football game and have the eye-af track a players eye whilst they are running I think it’s a perfectly valid test. Eye AF isn’t just for portraits.
See my 200mm f/2 review to see the Eye-AF working in a football training session and then come back and tell me that moving around quickly isn’t a valid test.
Again, as I said in the previous reply, Eye-AF isn’t for just a model standing there turning a head slightly... it’s for documentary shots, it’s for events, concerts and weddings where people are dancing, moving around in crowds, walking along the street. It’s for sports, it’s for kids running around.
Want to see Eye-AF work whilst someone wafts their hair from side to side? Great 👍 want to test it to the limit of what it is actually capable of to separate different camera brands and firmware? Then you do more than move your head from side to side and flick your hair.
Vlogging part looks good. Quick af back to the face after moving the camera away and no crazy aperture hopping to create abrupt exposure changes. Exposure transitions look good to me.

Awesome review. Definitely very informative to what I needed to find out about the video recording. Especially how much of a crop any of the video settings would render. X-T3 is quite impressive. It's so affordable as well and the built-in mic is really good. And you couldn't hear any focusing motor while you switched the camera to the garden and back to your face.
Good review. The updates are a little overwhelming on these new cameras. I hated hearing you say XH2 - I've hardly scratched the surface with my XH1. Plenty of room to grow with that one, though - holding off on buying anything new, even though the XT3 definitely looks like a nice addition. One question - same batteries as in XT2 and XH1?

I need to really test the burst shooting modes to see where the break points are, but the quoted numbers are respectable 11fps, 145 JPEG 36 raw...

What did you film this review on? It's very sharp and pleasing colours.
Sony A7 III in to an Atomos Shogun with Alister Chapman’s ‘Venice’ LUT hard baked in. The white balance is a little off in a couple of shots as the weather kept changing from bright but overcast to very dark and overcast.
Also it was shot in 4K then output for UA-cam at 1080. This allows me to crop in when needed, but the full frame 4K downsampled to 1080 always looks so crisp!

It does. Quite a nice tone, but it was a very quiet environment. It did better than I thought qa it was slightly windy and there was a few things you could hear in the distance that it has managed to avoid really picking up. Internal mics always tend to sound good until they are in a noisy environment - that's when you really see how well tuned to the frequency of human speaking they are. Going to add it to the list of things to test
great detailed video, I am still wondering if we really needed an X t3 so quickly the X t2 is barely 2 years old... It feels like a rush move to get more people into video to join the fuji board... Ltely Fuji si super active making so many cameras, but they beceom all mostly so much alike, it'zs cool and disturbing at some point.
I too worry they're going in too many directions.
I spoke to Fujifilm at the event and what I inferred was that if they have the technology ready they will put it in a camera, and if it is a firmware feature they will update compatible cameras, as we have seen in the past.
Usual cycle for a camera is 24-30 months these days, so the X-T3 is on schedule... it could have waited longer, but it looks like Fujifilm are trying to make the first move in the next round of APS-C mirrorless. The Sony A6500 is about due an upgrade and it can’t be long before Canon update its High end M-series cameras.

H1, I think it was simply a case that the sensor and processor was available at the time of X-T3 development, but not when the X-H1 was. I’d imagine as a new line the X-H1 development would have started earlier, as well as being released earlier.
As for too many cameras, my opinion is that they are on a roll and have been for a few years. With the full frame market seemingly the new battle ground there is a sizeable part of the market that Fujifilm could serve. It also helps explain the reason for having Chinese production - keep prices competitive

So why would IBIS matter, if you could use a stabilizer? I would think the stabilizer will have better performance when you really want your footage to be stabilized? It is nice to have the IBIS, but not necessary, and since Fuji brings the X-H line for video, there is not much reason for them to put IBIS in XT2. X-H2 then seems to be a video beast.
Yup - it’s the same as the GH5S. I think for anything very series people will use a tripod/monopod or 3-axis stabiliser. But for documentary ‘run and gun’ filmmaking IBIS is a huge benefit.
I spoke to Fujifilm about the X-H1 and where it now sits. I’ll try and edit and upload the full interview in the next day or so. Basically they said that the intention was never for it to be ‘their video camera’ it was simply received that way because of the new video features, IBIS and Eterna that it was received that way.
You’re right about the X-H2: with the sensor and processor of the X-T3, and IBIS it could be an incredible camera... but they would need to make sure headphone and mic sockets are also 3.5mm and on the side
Phil Jones65 people have to wait for X-H2 to get IBIS🤣. As for flip screen, not a big deal to me, won't use it for vlog or selfie anyway. So unless it has huge low light performance improved, I'm still pretty satisfied with my XT2.
If you watch the video Fujifilm explain why they didn’t opt for fully articulated front screen. Basically it gives more room for those ports on the side whilst maintaining the size of the camera. Apparently the hinge would add a few mm, but they wanted to maintain the size.
As they say, they would have been equally moaned at by people saying ‘I don’t want an articulated screen, I would’ve preferred a slightly smaller camera’.
Personally think the reason Canon are taking a hammering is that Nikon and Sony have it in full frame, as Fujifilm have it on the X-H1 for those that really need it.
I’ll upload my whole interview with Fujifilm in the next day or so - i asked about where this camera now leaves the X-H1 and a few other things including ‘Made In China’ etc
We were told that low light exposures were improved due to the new sensor. They showed some examples of long exposures looking cleaner especially.
It will be one of the things I’ll look at very closely in a full test as I know it will be a big factor for a lot of people with the X-T2

Really liking this camera, been a Nikon shooter for years but I like the creative freedom offered by full screen af and eaf, was tempted by Sony but never liked the ergonomics and weather sealing, (and it appears the Nikon Z6/7 has fallen short in this area).
I'll probably hire a xt3 when launched along with a 56m 1.2 and 100-400, just wish Fuji would bring out some 1.4 zooms to counter DoF issues like they've done with their primes.

Definitely give the X-T3 a try in a few weeks. I think as a Nikon shooter you’ll really enjoy it if you’re looking for a SLR style mirrorless. I’ve always been a big fan of Fujifilm handling - they nailed it with their early cameras - the X100 and X-Pro1 then the X-T1 came along. Every version since then as just been refined incrementally whilst the image quality and features go along with it.
There is a decent lens line-up, I’m sure there will be more coming. The 200mm lens was there, . It wasn’t a final sample, but I was just too busy to whack it on the camera and try it out

If the AF and lack of viewfinder blackout works like it looks like it could do, then it maybe a great camera for sports. As you say, lowlight AF could be the only issue. Let’s wait for some more tests to come through!
How’s the silver on the X-T3 compare to the silver-graphite X-T2? I paid the extra $200 for the S-G T2 and didn’t really like it. It looked like a metal camera body coated to simulate plastic. I didn’t get that and worse had to pay for it.
It looks ok from a distance - better than the X-T100. I had the black version this week and think I prefer it. It doesn’t look quite as cool, but as you say, it’s not fooling many people when you get up close.
As a former XT-1 user and (2) XT-2's owner who shoots professionally but does not do video I am wondering if I should pick one up. Waiting to see if it is a true upgrade in low light performance. I shoot some conventions where flash is not permitted.
That's a good question. This camera seems to be more geared towards video makers rather than photographers , or should I say hybrid users. I wish it was more photography centered and drop the video capabilities so it would be cheaper and more usable for someone like myself who has no interest in video. The low light capabilities are a interest more so than the tech about the sensor for the images look the same to me as it's old one
Raoul Simon yes I agree. I will probably wait and see what people say after the camera has been around a little. I saw a big difference from the XT1 to the 2 in performance dual card slots for convention use. My GFX is still my studio and slow go product and model shoot camera that replaced my old Nikon D800 but my D4s with big glass is still my sports and low light camera. All in all my XT2’s are the most fun and all around best handling cameras. I appreciate video and love to see good cinematography but I don’t have the patience and other people deal with that at conventions. One of the upgrades I love is seeing is the pull out push in lock diopter like on my nikons. I am always moving it at conventions and it takes me a few seconds to figure out why my camera is not auto focusing. Conventions are fast moving and even a few seconds can make a difference between getting the shot and missing it

Not the fastest, but even so I also expected it to be a little better. It was quite overcast and about 5:30pm - so not very light. Add that I naturally squint a lot and it may have caused it some difficulty. I’ll do some more thorough testing for the full review and a comparison with some other cameras if I can

Of course... this was merely a first look. Lots to look at and just a couple of hours to check as much as possible. Also prioritised video simply because having eye AF in video is a big deal as most don’t have it.

Some reviewers have the cameras long far in advance so can do far more detailed first looks that are basically full reviews. So it varies quite a lot.

I don't do much vlogging, but I do lots of video recording where I'm speaking into the camera. There is a lot to like about this camera, but the non-swiveling LCD screen is a bit disappointing. Still, the Fuji rep's point is well taken that most of us doing video recording are going to have some sort of HD monitor anyway. It's starting to look like my decision is coming down to the GH5 or the X-T3. TBH, I'm sort of leaning towards the X-T3 because I like the looks. I know that's a terrible reason to buy a camera, but it's visually appealing.
That current screen is far better for photographers. So a kind request for you video people: stop demanding selfie screen on every camera. I want this one, it makes so much easier and sturdier to take low down and high up portrait orientation shots than the selfie screens do.
Buying a camera because of the way it looks is absolutely a good reason, especially if it's a close decision like in your case. Never discount the way a camera makes you feel when using it. The aesthetics have a lot to do with how a camera makes me feel. I've heard many people say that after they got their Fuji camera, it made them want to go out shooting more often and that shooting was fun again. I think the aesthetics and ergonomics, along with the guts of the camera, have a lot to do with that feeling. Besides, when you're spending some serious coin on a camera, why not get something that looks nice? No one would buy a Mustang if it looked like a Pinto
I disagree. I don't shoot video and my current anon 60D has a fully articulating screen that I use way more than I ever thought I would when I first got the camera. Getting really low to the ground and pointing up is one such instance that this camera would not be able to do as well as my Canon. I see what you're saying but trust me, a fully articulating screen only adds to the ease of use of a screen
I don't view the screen as a deal breaker. It appears to meet or exceed the GH5 in almost all other respects, except for battery life and the screen. I'll handle the battery the same way I do with my G7, buy purchasing a dummy battery and plugging it into the wall and keeping extra batteries on hand for when I'm mobile. I was planning on buying an HD monitor anyway, so I can view my video output from my desk without squinting at the screen. Eventually, I plan to get a fully motorized setup that I can control from where I'm filming.

It’s not too dissimilar for how I shoot the review videos in the studio: monitor off to one side. Sometimes you an app to adjust focus remotely (particularly with GH4, less so with Sony A7 III as obviously AF is much better). Occasionally I’ll even have the camera on a iFootage motorised slider so I can actually adjust the framing remotely from my phone
Nice review, still don't understand why this camera is sold so much with the 18-55. Ok, it is a much better than average kit lens but the xt-3 deserves more than that .. Such like the 1.4 primes and the 56 f1.2. Never bought any kit what so ever.. Always assembled my own setup.

What a great review. This camera is looking great, I was eventually going to get a Sony APS-C camera but I have been waiting forever, they had overheating problems and other things. This looks like just the right size and with updated features that people want. The downside is the screen, it should have been a option to turn it up super bright mode in the camera settings and it should have been a flip-up screen on a hinge lifting it up to make it more usable. The side tilting thing I do not think people use that much. It also is a battery hog. On the other hand both of these issues can be compensated for so I do not see it as a big negative. If Sony does not deliver anything good in the next few months I am getting this camera. Full frame cameras are to big and expensive for my use and I have been waiting to long for Sony APS-C refresh of their cameras. I guess they do not feel that there is a big market any more for semi cheap APS-C cameras. What I do want to know more about is the video features, looking forward to that review.

Just an FYI: The X-Trans CFA has nothing to do with Fuji’s excellent color rendition. All Fuji GFX and X-Series bodies, X-Trans and Bayer, feature it.
The film simulation are, but if you look at the actual colour contrast and detail there are differences betweenX-Trans and Bayer
Interesting. That's something I've never noticed in comparisons between Fuji's X-Trans and Bayer bodies. Maybe I just don't know what to look for.
It's quite subtle... But in my eyes its there. If I get time i’ll try and get a couple of bodies in and do some really pixel peeping tests colour tests.
I was using the X-T100 recently and to be the colours just weren't quite the same as an X-Trans sensor.

So why they don't give us the full sensor information in a 16bit raw files?
I’d suggest simply speed and processing power. The raw files would be huge. They would take a long time to read and write. Any in camera image styles would also require more processing power to be applied... I’m pretty sure neither display would come close to being able to show all of the information, and most people would struggle at home, although things are changing with HLG and HDR monitors etc.
I’d also guess that there would be very marginal gains in very specific situations, so for now it wouldn’t be worth them doing.
Very low level noise would probably account for some of that information in for some of the shadow detail at 16-but...
... and let’s be honest, the vast majority of photographers simply don’t need it

Yeah, it did ok. Slow mo looks nice, in-camera mic was surprisingly ok (though it was very quiet in terms of background noise) and the AF was perfectly good enough. Stabilisation was ok. It’s not ideal, but it’s certainly useable... even if I could see myself and was just pointing the lens roughly at my face.
I honestly don’t think it’s a market that Fujifilm think about for the X-T3. The X-T100 has the front facing screen option, and at its price point is much more of a ‘vlogging’ camera.

Sorry... if it is doing a good job for you right now then stick with what you have. It’s easy to get gear envy. If something will make it easier for you to get the shots that you need then it may be worth it, but otherwise just stick with what you have... for now. The X-T20 is a great little camera and good value
I might hold off from my switch from Sony for the xh2. If XH2 has this new BSI sensor and processor plus dual ISO with IBIS and the same xt3 video codecs then I'll wait and pay for its premium! That plus the 16-55 2.8 would be the ultimate run n gun

Why do you still need a FF, Im switching from FF to this XT3 or Xpro3 if its released soon. The times where APSC where no good after iso800 are gone, they have the same MP and 1.4 and even affordable manual F0.95 prime to create DOF bokeh shot. Really the need for FF times are gone if you ask me.

XT3 is actually 1500 vs 1999, first you save 500$ on the body and then compare the lens price, thats where you really break the bank ! If you want 2 to 3 lens you end up with a kit that cost more like 2k to 5K more in the FF and the weight and size is also considerable.
Dont get me wrong, a couple of years ago when APSC iso was not usable past iso800 I jumped into FF with no regrets at all. But now you need to look at the fact that APSC like the XT3 can perform like a FF if you look at final image result for a fraction of the cost and size.
Im currently full geared in FF but im selling to move over to the XT3 since for me its the first camera that match my needs in the APSC sensor performance, and they will only get betters in the future years.
Fujifilm needs to correct the long-standing firmware blunder in the X-T1, X-T2, and X-T3. Namely, the Fuji firmware resets the self-timer EVERY time the cameras go to sleep or are turned off. This is a huge pain for tripod shooters. Fuji simply needs to include a menu item for the self-timer that will RESET or NO RESET. Let's fix this blunder, Fujifilm.

The more positive feedback I hear about this camera, the more I feel validated making the switch from Canon. I don't even have the camera yet and I already know it outperforms Canon in many categories. Glad I defected
I’ve been wondering why a camera company that wishes to be taken seriously has such a fascination with playing with a menagerie of various shades of silver. Makes their camera line appear to be toys, which as a committed Fuji fan, they are not. One can purchase a 20 year old vintage Leitz lens and it will match the latest M-10P. Leica is the Wimbledon of cameras and there is something to be said for that. Selling cameras with 20 year old technology for $8000 body only is an achievement not to be argued with. There was a camera company a few years ago that produced a consumer level dog of a camera. It wasn’t selling so they came out with a blood red version. Fortunately for the rest of us they only sold 7 of them and discontinued the silly idea.
Fuji should come out with ONE silver for all its bodies and lenses and stick to it across the entire line. It sends a message of confidence and stability. “If you want a camera to match your sporting shoes then you are just going to have to look elsewhere. This bugged me enough that I called Fuji and asked. I was told, “people have asked for it.” I didn’t buy this for a second. It was obviously the sort of embarrassed answer one gives when they have no good answer, i.e., blame some market study. “It’s not our fault. We’ve giving people what they want.” Bollocks. I suspect Fuji hired the son-in-law of some top executive to run the design department who has no clue regarding the camera culture but graduated with a degree in fashion design. Now no one is willing to suggest firing him.
I tried everything i could to convince myself that fuji apsc will be as good as ff camera but i failed. Although my xt2 is a very comfortable camera to use but still cannot beat the IQ of my quirky A7ii. So i still keep both only use sony more often
Since writing I traded in my black T2 for a silver T3. It is more silvery than the silver/graphite T2. Since I had a black T2 and still have a black H1 and T20 I thought I’d go full retro. I do remember getting comments about my silver 100F and sil/graph T2 from people on the street. They universally thought both “old film cameras,” and for whatever strange archetypal symbols knocking around in their heads they always seemed somewhat less concerned why a complete stranger wanted to take their picture. “Silver=money, tin man, trust...black=death, nazis, evil.” Their natural paranoid suspicions seemed diverted for the moment by the camera itself. I’m sure their thoughts eventually turned to wondering what kind of weirdo still shoots film but by that time I’m long gone. “Oh yes, he must be some kind of reclusive luddite.”
Video is unusable without using an external gimball due lack of IBIS, your selfie filming bit is completely shaky and unusable. You don't mention that this camera splits video recordings in 4GB chunks because Fuji can only support FAT32. 20min 4K60 record limit is a shame. Battery life is way too short and means one would require using the hugely overpriced battery grip. The actual bitrate savings using H265 are unknown and confusing.
Fuji's excuse for not including a flip out display is a complete lie, they could easily fit all those ports and fit a flip out display without making the device bigger. The only reason Fuji don't include the flip out display is because Fuji is too lazy to change the mold and they don't actually know what the consumers want.
Yup, I should have mentioned the FAT32 format. It’s annoying for anyone that shoots longer form video. Hands up I simply forgot to mention it, but plan to do a video like this just dedicated to the cameras video features when I have it for review.
There are All-I and Long GOP Codecs - I’ll point the X-T3 at a TV screen showing the same video a few times and see just how long you can get from each codec. All-I will no doubt look impressive, but given that most video ends up on UA-cam Long GOP should be fine for the majority. I’d suggest that for those who it isn’t fine and demand more, they would probably want to go ProRes via a recorder anyway.
And the video whilst walking - it’s very wobbly without IBIS or a gimbal - that’s why I did the little test.
20min 4K 60P vs 29:59 4K 30P - interesting to see how much real world difference this makes to people. Neither are enough for a full wedding service (for example), or for a theatre performance. Interviews could be a problem, but then you may be recording for hours so the difference is very relative to the subject.
I wish they’d switch to ExFAT though... could this be done via a firmware update?

Yes please ask Fuji if they will add exFAT instead of FAT32 in a firmware update to avoid the 4GB file chunk splitting.
Please ask Fuji why they have a 20min limit at 4K60 is it due to them thinking the camera will overheat if filming more than that? Does that mean users should not just keep filming 20min of 4K60 again and again right after each other because the camera will overheat?
Can you ask Fuji why they put a 30min limit when EU supposedly won't have the 30min tax anyway by the end of this year? And is there any way a user can unlock those 20min and 30min limits to make recording unlimited?
Myself personally I cannot buy a camera that has recording limits, the GH5 had no limits and was released nearly 2 years ago so I don't quite understand why no other camera manufacturer provides unlimited recording. I often record interviews in one shot that are much longer than 30min, how about this question for Fuji, what if the user uses the battery grip, is there any chance that (perhaps due heat dissipation from battery grip, Fuji might unlock unlimited recording with the grip?
Another thing maybe would be good to ask Fuji, is can they add object video AF tracking? As far as I saw in other hands on videos, it seems face/eye tracking is working OK but there is no way to tap on objects to have the AF system track those. I would expect though that if Face tracking works then in theory a firmware update might add object tracking too?
Anyways I believe them not including IBIS, flip out display and a larger battery is a shame but I can perhaps hope Fuji doesn't make those same mistakes with X-H2 and hopetfully Fuji fixes all those 3 things in X-H2. Also to provide unlimited recording support in X-H2.
My questions about H265 bitrates is because as far as I understand the purpose of H265 is to save on bandwidth. My hope is that a strong H265 encoder in a camera can perhaps encode the same quality at half the bitrate using H265 compared with H264. So perhaps 4K60 could be 75-100mbit/s in H265 about the same quality as 150-200mbit/s in H264. Just it doesn't look like bitrate savings are achieved on the X-T3 when chosing the H265 codec. It actually looks like the highest bitrates are encoded in H265.

As we know Fujifilm are excellent at adding features to cameras rather than waiting for a new camera.
I’d imagine the 20min limit would be because of overheating. It may also be that the limit of the processing buffer is reached at that limit - just a guess, but more likely heat.
I think Panasonic would have almost certainly had to add in the cost of unlimited recording in the GH5... at which point you have a weigh up the extra cost versus the potential extra sales from removing the limit.
Fujifilm are really fighting with this camera as competition is fierce right now with Full Frame seemingly soon to become the new normal. I guess hitting a price point was very important so Chinese manufacture and the avoiding the import duty by having the time restrictions helps keep that price down.
I’ve not heard about the removal of the duty on video cameras. I would guess this could be removed via firmware, but would this then open up a legal/tax issue. Would all the camera then be liable for historical payments? I’ve no idea
@@Photogearnews yes I heard Fuji is good at firmware updates, so I think it would be good to ask them if there is any chance they can fix in firmware update:
- exFAT for no 4GB chunks
- allow unlock unlimited recording (even if that costs a certain fee for a plugin)
- Tap on any object AF tracking
If the 20min limit for 4K60 is due to heat, then what happens to a user who keeps shooting 20min clips one after the other? Will there be an overheating warning to appear on the display asking the user to pause for a while and let the camera cool off before recording more? Seems could be a big issue for some.
I read somewhere online that the EU tax expires by the end of the year, if the tax is the reson for Fuji to put the 30min limit, then maybe Fuji would know best if that tax is really expiring by the end of the year. And how much is the tax per camera? Since perhaps 1/3rd of their cameras are even sold in Europe, why restrict all the users from outside the EU and why not allow EU users pay that tax if they want to unlock unlimited recording?
Sony has some sort of "cheat code" people can find in "unofficial forums" which removes the 30min limit on some of their APS-C cameras I think like the A6300 and A6500. Probably also that "unofficial code" removes the recording limit on A7Sii, A7ii, A7Rii, A7Riii, A9 and A7iii. Can Fuji also provide such "unofficial code" to remove the recording limit?
I've always considered the XT series more photographer centric with some nice video features. Sounds like you need to look for something that is more video centric.

Thanks! Don’t remember it on my Nikon’s. Guessing it was the pro bodies... and I don’t ever recall adjusting the diopter whilst testing those, I guess because it was locked in position so I didn’t need to.
I wish it was "FREE."

Yup... Seems standard on the higher end Nikons. Incredibly (as a longtime Nikon user) I've never noticed or paid that much attention. Still surprised its not more common generally

Let's get real, the battery-life is too low, the video colour looks terrible, the dynamic-range seems limited, and the whole picture looks somewhat washed-out, and mild smudging is evident throughout.
Check the codec and bitrate!
This wasn't a test for colour - from memory it was in Eterna, with the WB on auto. Eterna is a fairly flat profile and it was an overcast day. But again, I didn't mention colour for video because this is a first look video (started in the title) not full review. It was in Long GOP (from what I remeber) not All-I.
Dynamic range of quoted as 12EV in video - but again lets wait for a full test rather that judge it on a colour profile and seeing what we can actually get out the camera.
Battery life... Yeah, could be better if you shoot video. But as I said with my Nikon Z6/Z7 preview... Most people can afford 5 secs to swap over a battery
Brave of Fuji and possibly unwise is producing this camera in China. With Trump threatening even more tariffs on China, I imagine both availability and price could be unstable in the future.
I think it depends on which goods/commodities face tariffs. Also it is only one market, albeit a sizeable one.
You could argue the same with virtually any manufacturer who makes products in China. The fact is production is cheaper and that can be passed on to the consumer. The X-T3 price is competitive currently.
The current tariffs cover "major camera components ". New tariffs under consideration cover cameras.
Weak justification by the Fuji guy re the screen
I was thinking the same thing. The fully articulating screen is the only thing I'm going to miss about my Canon 60D. I use it all the time when I shoot macro in the garden where I'm crouched down and pointing up. It's great for working in precarious positions
It’s a Sony manufactured sensor but a Fuji proprietary and patented design. I don’t think Sony would risk the scandal, the business or potential suites if they used their position to copy Fuji’s design. Japanese companies such as autos have a different culture than in the US and parts are often manufactured by competitors or even interchangeable between different makes.
It is most likely a pretty much ‘off the shelf’ Sony design that we will see in their next generation of A6XXX series cameras. Fujifilm and other brands will work with Sony to see what types of speed and features will be available in the next generation of sensors and they will work together to achieve what the market demands. A lot also depends on the actual machinery that fabricates the sensors and what they are capable of manufacturing.
The Fujifilm design and patent comes in the form of the X-Trans array - not just in the actual placement of the array but the exact colour of the filter, which may slightly differ from the colour Sony or other brands use.
The rest of the differences come from exactly what different manufactures can get from the sensors in terms of the processors and also the algorithms they use
Huh I'm disappointed to see, how bad the Eye AF still seems to be. Good enough to deem it a more interesting gimmick than before, but not good enough to really rely on that, when shooting a (single) person.
But that's the point of an eye af. To allow you to forget about focusing alltogether. A real "auto" focus.
If this doesn't work, as evident from this video, than users will fall back to their old focusing methods. Those which suck up 90% of your attention and photographic effort.
I think it depends on what you are doing. Portrait shoot, editorial shoot... will be fine. Not quite sure it will be useful for something like sports photography.
I'm not interested in sports, these chaps would be too far away anyway for an eye AF benefit.
No, I'm worried about portrait and editorial style shooting.
Seeing, that the AF square dances wildly around the iris, rather then resting on it.
For portraits, it is not enough to just count hits (where an eye was detected) versus misses (where something totally off is focused on). I would also require, that the focusing is done on the iris, but not on the eyebrow or wherever else the Fuji eye-AF is randomly jumping over.
I'm only afraid, that the precision may suffer from the focus square movement pattern I see.
Then, the eye AF would no better than a plain face detect, with regards to precision.
Detection rate is not the same as detection precision / focusing quality.
I don't have a Sony A7 III yet, nor the not-even-anounced mini-A9 (APSC version thereof).
But from the eye detect videos available for the A7 III, that seems to play in a different league still.
But these are only vlogger videos usually. I'm very keen on a systematical shoot-out test, under same defined conditions, hopefully DPReview will do this.
Or you know... we could do it when we get the cameras next week. This is a first look.
The comment about sports was with regard to the speed I was moving. Most portraits aren’t going to have people running or moving their heads as quickly as I was. Distance and lens will make a difference
So far, better, but still room to improve compared to some of the competition, with the caveat that it depends what you are shooting.
Also having used the A9 + 400mm lens to shoot a football game, the eye-af could def be used. It was working for playing warming up, goalkeepers, players taking throw-ons... obviously didn’t work for faster movements, but there it switched to face detection
And to add this wasn’t a ‘test’ it was seeing how the detection worked based on the display. A test - which will be coming will be firing at moving subject a checking the focusing of say 50 shots and seeing how successful the actual images are, not just the box dancing around

Has the same quality of sealing as the XT-2 and both my '2s' have gone through several drenchings over the past years, not certain where you get your info.
It has old obsolete controls. Old obsolete cropped sensor. No IBIS no Flippy screen no wonder Fuji dropped the price who the hell would want to buy this thing.
