Yesterday, the Dept of Transportation activated the traffic signal and the new warning signage at the 11foot8 bridge. Let's see how that worked out so far.
Fat chance. They discount the stupidity of the camping types and snow birds that drive their tall RV's. One of them hitting the canopener costs them more to get their stuff fixed than one of the delivery trucks.
+Atem Fontem But no Darwin Awards. That requires removal from the gene pool. If fomeone *did* get killed or castrated in the future, that would be a Darwin Award Nominee.
Someone hit it! Video coming soon. facebook.com/11foot8videos/posts/1831004923794693 (I am not affiliated with the Facebook page, site, or UA-cam channel.)
Hahaha...My thoughts exactly, especially for the rental box trucks (since many don't require a CDL to drive, those drivers often seem unfazed by signage meant for trucks)
No worries, there will always be oblivious drivers suddenly finding themselves in a convertible... especially inexperienced rental drivers unfamiliar to the area.
Low clearance means exactly that, no joke, not a bluffing, and no room for error. I'm a trucker and I can speak for every trucker out there when I say, missing a low clearance sign and running someone camping in my blindsides off the highway are equally the #1 nightmares every trucker worries about. But most drivers that miss the signs are box drivers who believe that they're not that tall. But us (13'-6") is a memory tattoo.
I feel like the fact that it turns red when there is an over height vehicle means the sign will do better than what I was originally thinking. They have to stop, or run the red light like that bus did, and will be staring at that sign waiting for the green light. Of course they need to recalibrate the beam because its too low right now seeing how that bus made it through with room to spare.
Where I live, they put a metal bar with small bells going down to the max height at about 500m before the bridge. That way the driver hits them, hears the bells on the roof and has time to stop. The set-up of this bridge would probably require 3 of them for all side.
Bridge raised by 8" in late 2019 after innumerable crashes. At 12 feet 4" there's very few crashes now (yes, there's still some rental truck drivers who think a 12 feet 5" box will fit under a 12 feet 4" clearance if they take a run at it - The Bridge has reminded them that it won't!). The end of an era though.😭
I like how they hedged their bets by installing the sign and lighting well over the top of the bridge, just in case, so they wouldn't have to replace a smashed sign.
I can see it now, truck see's light is changing and because of their load or whatever they will claim they couldn't stop so they gunned it and crashed into the beam. So you will get less footage, but when you do, it will be bigger crashes because the truckers are accelerating more than normal.
Pretty sure if they're dealing with the repurcussions of an EMP incident there'll be a lot more important things to worry about than hand-wringing over 0oh dear, is the new 11'8" bridge warning signage functioning properly?!" I mean, c'mon.
Reminds me of the Iowa Ave. Bridge at the University of Iowa. It is 10’5” and has eaten some delivery trucks over the years. I remember a University laundry service truck taking a “short cut” and watching the top peel back. Great stuff.
February That was my question. I am not sure the sensors activate a red signal or if this was just a coincidence in the video. Would make sense if it did.
Over the years i have had hours of enjoyment from your videos. Too bad for us viewers this sign has been put up. Its the end of an era. all good things must come to an end. I hope you find another bridge and thank you for setting up cameras for our entertainment
Francis Lafontaine. É. The foot bridge over the main road near me has a dent in the girder and it's not a low bridge. Seriously had to be a oversize load to hit it.
Well if you want to be on this channel thats the way to do it. So many missed opportunities... It is for the best all good things must end.... Please leave the channel up so we can reminis.
plus its america, land of the stupid. i dont know whats stupider, the drivers or the fact that no one in the gov thought to put up a sign years ago. Though from my point of view I am glad they didnt because i got to see some trucks get all smashed up.
+MultiPurposeReviewer I'm guessing the crane is a local that already knows not to risk it. Only way to know for sure is to check if a crane turned away from the bridge before the sign was put up but who cares about those trucks.
What they do in Western Australia is before the bridge they've placed a movable sign that say's if you hit this then don't go further down the road as you'll hit the bridge, it works only in areas where they've done this , elsewhere the bridges still can open the trucks.
Still need to post that Sign a few blocks before the intersection and telling them what lane to be in and to turn where so truckers have advance warning. Not right in the intersection where the flow of traffic is doing 30 mph. It will still be too late due to poor lication of that new sign with loaded trucks coming through doing the speed limit. Mfkrs who never driven a truck need to take one on the road before given a regular license. Common sense Mr DOT
Notice that stoplight turning red as the sign turns on? That's a sensor detecting height. Overheight trucks will cause the light to turn red so the trucker has to stare at that sign
decidiousrex Been driving 18 yrs. we are a total of 72 feet long. and weigh upto 80000 It takes a length of a football field to come to a complete stop at 35mph Still neeed more advance warning then that. And telling us what lane to be in way in advance before we hit that intersection. Either that or risk skidding or risk side swippeing someone. But either way it has made better progress. Its like this one spot in Pennsylvania. 2 lan us highway 55 mph. Im in the right lane doing 55 to 60 like we are suppose to be. here comes an intersection. Half a block b4 the intersection theres this rectangle sign says trucks turn left. hahaha what a joke. the turning lane is 3 lanes over at the stop light. Then mfkers run their mouths when we cant run ppl over to make that left hand turn and have no choice to go through the light at 55. Then all of a sudden therr was a highway patrol and gave me a ticket for off route. And told me to make a u turn in the middle of a 2 lane road blocking traffic. fkin dumb. No advance notice what so ever. I havent paid that and will never pay the bs of a ticket. they can blow me
And that's why, soon enough, your job will be done by robots. Computers don't need signs. And before you go "no robot could EVER do my job" just know, I don't care. I know they can, and will. And I can't wait for that day
decidiousrex And the Jetsons told us we'd all be in flying cars by the year 2000. Trucks are going to be he last vehicle that's totally automated. You're a fool to believe otherwise.
there will still be the oblivious drivers. However I don't think impacts to the bridge are going to be as frequent as they were. The building supply delivery truck would have been an interesting one to have hit the bridge
Honestly engineers could put up an even bigger sign to help reduce the number of crashes. They could put up a giant that says ALL TRUCKS MUST TURN The bridge I drive under has a clearance of 15'-10"
I assume you mean put up a giant _sign,_ not have a giant stand there all day and tell people. Trucks would still try to drive through it. Just the same way you cannot stop 100% of the people from running a stop sign.
I think they would have much better luck with a sign that drops down a large orange curtain or ribbon from behind. It would at least block the driver's view and be impossible to overlook. It could then wind the curtain back up when the way is clear. Or, they could have all the renal truck places in the area sign a page in their rental agreement stating they will not drive through that particular intersection, at all.
For all you saying this is the end.Give it about a month or two and someone will Run the red and hit it (I live in Durham about 15mins away from here).
We have a few signs in the UK that are activated by vehicles that will pass the restriction: as a driver, I know my dimensions so if the lights come on, I recheck the signs and my vehicle. I then drive through the gap if the signs allow.
"The Two Men and a Truck" actually had an accident previously with that bridge so I'm getting they didn't want to experience another hit with that bridge
The signage that comes on when an over height vehicle is detected should flash. A sign that's not flashing just fits in real nice with the rest of the static signs in the area. A flashing sign is difficult to ignore. I'm assuming that most of the incidents occur with drivers new to the area so a flashing sign as well as flashing lights would get their attention. We have the same issue here in Edmonton, Alberta. We have a flashing sign and flashing lights when a high load approaches, (plenty of ȇǻṝḮẏ warning), and very rarely does anyone hit the low bridge; maybe once every couple of years, if that.
I almost down voted this video. Please I hope there are still idiots out there. On the up side, this should make the people that do ignore it even better. Maybe once we get a large truck following another large truck, so it can't see the lights.
Syracuse NY has a notorious bridge of this type. Cannot be raised (rail line) and roadway cannot be lowered due to the water table. Sadly, after years of humorous repeated shearings, and a gazillion signs and warnings put up, some people were killed a few years ago when it was hit by a double-decker Megabus. (Syracuse had a second bridge like this as well - I was parked under it when a truck in the opposing lane had its top sheared off, rrrrrrip! - but they lowered the roadway a couple years ago.)
As long as the warning signage has kind of "still light" with only text unbrightly flashing (some drivers seemingly or simply can not read obviously) the series of havoc vids will continue. Even the new bar and 12'-4" does not work. So. City is required to install not only red traffic lights but strong and brightly (I mean "pointy" , attention-catching, unoverseeable) red warning flashers. Gas-discharge-tube type. Maybe this would help.
_Not every vocational driver knows the height of their vehicle smart guy_ That's no excuse. When you drive a big truck you should know the height of your vehicle so this doesn't happen. It doesn't matter if you have a CDL or not, it's just common sense. Besides, I've seen people crashing even after the warning sign told them to turn because the vehicle wouldn't fit. It's not my fault they're the ones being dumb. _Something tells me, stupid runs in your family though._ Nice try, moron. I take it you must have been one of the idiots that crashed into it.
yovo68 said he wanted to set cameras up at another infamous bridge near to this one. Plus, if the drivers ignored the old warning lights, they will ignore the new set up, I guarantee it.
How will trucks approaching from the side street and turning to go under the bridge see that warning sign? They won't be able to trigger it. Also, I would have tried to buy that sign and flashing beacons they took down.
This sign will doubtlessly prevent many accidents, but it's not foolproof. Look up the "Water curtains in Sydney tunnels" video... it shows an overheight vehicle whose driver doesn't notice *multiple* flashing warning signs and strobe lights. He finally stops when a hologram-esque stop sign is projected onto a water curtain directly in front of the vehicle. (It's worth checking out the video just to see that awesome system in action!)
They will drive in to in eventually. There are tunnels and bridges here in Sweden that have warnings of all kinds but still people enter them, at speed, and gets stuck.
you also could place detectors on both side of the road which measure your truck if it's capable to go under the bridge. if its too high to go under the bridge, it could sound an alarm and light an arrow indicating he or she has to turn left or right
The "Two Men and a Truck" vehicle is the same company that crashed about a year before in crash #93. Hopefully, they learned their lesson from that time.
I would almost think that this change could be the end of both the channel and the website. But, nothing they have tried has worked, so far. 11'8" bridge is dead! Long live 11'8" bridge.
At one-time truck drivers were professional and could read the signs and know the height of their rig but with common core education, we have to put up $100,000 signal lights and warnings on everything.
Interesting...though I will miss all the wrecks, I'm glad they helped resolve the issue without spending money on "fixing" the bridge or making the road lower. Im sure they will have a few idiots ignore the sign, but this is a vast improvement.
was interesting that many buses who were 1 or 2 inches lower triggered the warning, but they knew they would be okay, I am guessing those buses will now not trigger that sign when the 12-4 bridge is open to traffic? ( and the question is if there will be less accidents per year now, but we will still get them or still the same number as people with vehicles who would have turned on an 11-8 will now think they can do 12-4? )
There are signs like that in Lansing Michigan on Pennsylvania Avenue near Potter Park Zoo since they had a issue with over height trucks hitting the bridge which is not a good thing since the bridge is used to haul coal to the Lansing BWL power plant and supplies to the GM Grand River Assembly plant.
Oh yeah, lived & worked delivery job ( cargo van..) right near there; saw a few crunchers:/ Also those coal trains would block Washington forever; just creepin' back & forth. Major PITA:(
Josh Woodward, close. What happens when there is a power outage? Still it would be much easier to lower the road bed then eventually replace the bridge when the city can afford to replace the old low outdated structure.
And now, in 2019, we can confirm that the 11foot8 bridge still generates many "can opener" moments. This flashing neon "OVERHEIGHT MUST TURN" sign installed in May 2016 made no noticeable difference at all. Here are the stats by year: 2008 (7) 2009 (12) 2010 (7) 2011 (12) 2012 (8) 2013 (7) 2014 (14) 2015 (19) 2016 (15) 2017 (14) 2018 (12) 2019 (3) As of Apr 30.
Actually the "two men and a truck" movers truck did not turn because of the light but because they crashed the very same truck into the bridge some years back! You can see them on the 2008-2013 compilation!
I still believe they just need a hanging sign of the same height that says "if you hit this sign, you'll hit that bridge." Add a bell or something so it makes noise
Are the traffic lights on both sides of the sign actual traffic lights that work like regular traffic lights in normal conditions or are they only triggered to turn yellow, then red when an over height truck arrives? Also, if the light turns red for oversized trucks, it's illegal to turn left on a red light. Or is there an exception for this red light? Wouldn't a red light and green left arrow have made more sense?
I've seen one of these. Only, it didn't say "overheight, must turn" in white letters - it said "STOP" in flashing red letters. Nice to see this one is working, though.
Anyone who thinks this is the end of the 11foot8 channel has an impressive amount of faith in drivers :p
Only reason that moving company turned was because it has wrecked multiple trucks into that bridge xD
It wont.
TotalChaosDK
that didn't stop Penske and they probably had the most accidents per one company.
Fat chance. They discount the stupidity of the camping types and snow birds that drive their tall RV's. One of them hitting the canopener costs them more to get their stuff fixed than one of the delivery trucks.
Penske lets you rent trucks
so it's the idiot who rented it not Penske
I highly doubt this is the end of the mishaps surrounding the 11 foot 8 bridge. For every foolproof measure, a greater fool is born.
+VigilanteAgumon natural selection

+OffTrackProductions Anxiously looking forward to this.

OffTrackProductions hello there railfan
Kandi Klover wtf. do you know what a railfan is?
Kandi Klover And what did I do to you to ever deserve that?
My bet is that a truck tries to race the light, they see it change yellow so speed up, and then they plow into the crash beam while speeding.
EXECTLY!
The sensor is way back
SlashesWithClaws just use some plutonium
That's what happened with the bus, no? Only it was actually short enough to make it.
Pretty much
"Oh shit, yellow light - GUN IT! *smash*"
+Josh Woodward you made my day xD
Hahaha...My thoughts exactly, especially for the rental box trucks (since many don't require a CDL to drive, those drivers often seem unfazed by signage meant for trucks)
It;s too easy too lower the road?
+Mark E They can't lower the road because of utilities. And they can't raise the bridge without significant disruption.
boom!
No worries, there will always be oblivious drivers suddenly finding themselves in a convertible... especially inexperienced rental drivers unfamiliar to the area.
To be fair, "Two men and a truck" hit the bridge before. :-)
I was just thinking this.
RoyDurett Looked familiar lol
ha i was about to type this and then i noticed it was already mentioned
Mark Stockman Thrice. Let's say they went through quite a few drivers with this bridge.
That was Two DIFFERENT Men and a Truck. Pretty sure they were canned after that... lol
Low clearance means exactly that, no joke, not a bluffing, and no room for error. I'm a trucker and I can speak for every trucker out there when I say, missing a low clearance sign and running someone camping in my blindsides off the highway are equally the #1 nightmares every trucker worries about. The first one still gives me hope that the I beam won't be lonely for long
I feel like the fact that it turns red when there is an over height vehicle means the sign will do better than what I was originally thinking. They have to stop, or run the red light like that bus did, and will be staring at that sign waiting for the green light. Of course they need to recalibrate the beam because its too low right now seeing how that bus made it through with room to spare.
+Giles Wells the bridge is flagged as 11' 8" but is actually slightly taller
+randomsanwhich good to know
Where I live, they put a metal bar with small bells going down to the max height at about 500m before the bridge. That way the driver hits them, hears the bells on the roof and has time to stop. The set-up of this bridge would probably require 3 of them for all side.
I don't like the new idea.
Theres hardly going to be crashes now.
Destroy the new sign
Only one good way to do that. ;)
Relax Nathan. You can't fix stupid. There will still be plenty of entertainment to come.
Why don't they just remove the whole bridge? That would be the safest option
They can't do that, the line that operates the bridge is currently being used by Norfolk Southern. Plus, its a really busy line.
This sucks! I'm going over to the 9'6" channel.
driveman if that's a real channel can you send me a link? lol
LMAOOOO 😂😂😂😂😂
I came for carnage.
I'm guessing we'll see SUV's with free air conditioning then.
I'm crying. It's like watching children grow. My whole life passed in front of me while watching this video.
Makes me sad, I can't help but think your videos helped get the lights a little.

I'm pretty sure that there is sensors in place far enough away that will trigger the light in time for the truck to stop
Michael Chaney
Well that bus didn't stop, it just went through.
TheCobruhAlienat0r bus probably goes through there all the time and knew it wasn't going to hit it
TheCobruhAlienat0r the bus never made contact
I hope your cameras work during a power cut as none of that fancy signage will work then!
Oh yeah, now that would be great!
They are powering a lot of signs like this with solar panels now.
There's this fancy new technology called batteries..... they probably have such signage on battery backup
Pretty sure if they're dealing with the repurcussions of an EMP incident there'll be a lot more important things to worry about than hand-wringing over 0oh dear, is the new 11'8" bridge warning signage functioning properly?!"
I mean, c'mon.
If the power goes out then the cars won't work either so crisis averted
Wasn't the two men and a truck on this channel before? lol.
+West Florida Dashcam Lots of Penske trucks, too.
from my best recollection atleast one time before if not two or three times.
two men and 1/3 of a truck
404UsernameNotFoundX Movers who don't care
I noticed that too!
This is a dark day. Hopefully drivers become complacent again.
+Sir Shaun that wont take long.......

UI must have a few extra security cameras lying around, they should turn one towards that bridge.
Lol I found it. That Bridge is WAYYYY too short. They should focus on that bridge instead
So the traffic lights are activated by the overheight sensors? I didn't expect that new sign!
February That was my question. I am not sure the sensors activate a red signal or if this was just a coincidence in the video. Would make sense if it did.
Damn hope this isnt the end of an era
Boy i have good news for you. they raised the bridge 8 inches and idiots STILL crash into it!
Should be "If you hit this sign, you'll hit that bridge." I'm sure that'll reduce accidents by 100%.
The Roads Here Suck yeah like a hanging bar that parking lots have
That won't work. Too much to read.
@@chek1n In fact, I have seen hanging bars that say 'clearance 7 feet (4' 8" less than the famous 11' 8")'
DAMMIT!! Go take that shit DOWN!! >:(
Cool the light changes with it... Except there goes all our fun lol. Hope to still see a few
I am sure this channel will be fine. It may have less frequent updates, but idiots will still be idiots.

+MultiPurposeReviewer I'm guessing the crane is a local that already knows not to risk it. Only way to know for sure is to check if a crane turned away from the bridge before the sign was put up but who cares about those trucks.
I was patiently waiting for the one that missed the sign, lol
this is sad. the bridge won't have any more trucks to eat and it will starve =(
It was good to see that the sign did help
Good to see! Sad to hear :(
Less amazing crashes that endanger people around them.

There goes our 11 8 entertainment.
Recent history has proven you wrong, grasshopper!
There's always NetFlix
I actually enjoyed watching the trucks slow down and turn, also I liked the extra suspense in the edition

Aww man. Now there's gonna be less entertainment for us to watch.
And yet trucks are still crashing into it. I guess you can't fix stupid.
Not every vocational driver knows the height of their vehicle smart guy. Something tells me, stupid runs in your family though.
_Not every vocational driver knows the height of their vehicle smart guy_
That's no excuse.
_Something tells me, stupid runs in your family though._
Nice try, moron. I take it you must have been one of the idiots that crashed into it.
yovo68 said he wanted to set cameras up at another infamous bridge near to this one. Plus, if the drivers ignored the old warning lights, they will ignore the new set up, I guarantee it.
We will know if it works if this channel goes dead.
+drink15 That's what I was about to say haha!!
yeah :(
+Nice man no, not really..........
Did that bus driver really change lanes while going under it? Wowsers...
that TWO MEN AND A TRUCK crashed into it before.. check your other video
How will trucks approaching from the side street and turning to go under the bridge see that warning sign? They won't be able to trigger it. Also, I would have tried to buy that sign and flashing beacons they took down.
That's an interesting company. Two men and a truck. I wonder if they are a subsidiary to two girls and one cup?
This sign will doubtlessly prevent many accidents, but it's not foolproof. Look up the "Water curtains in Sydney tunnels" video... it shows an overheight vehicle whose driver doesn't notice *multiple* flashing warning signs and strobe lights. He finally stops when a hologram-esque stop sign is projected onto a water curtain directly in front of the vehicle. (It's worth checking out the video just to see that awesome system in action!)
looks like your channel is on its way out.....
+WezleyB You underestimate how little drivers pay attention. I give it less than a month before someone crashes again.
They will drive in to in eventually. There are tunnels and bridges here in Sweden that have warnings of all kinds but still people enter them, at speed, and gets stuck.
i give it a day
you also could place detectors on both side of the road which measure your truck if it's capable to go under the bridge. if its too high to go under the bridge, it could sound an alarm and light an arrow indicating he or she has to turn left or right
Well, this is going to make your channel much less interesting. LOL.
Good God, finally, the number of accidents there prior to the extra signs was stupendous.
I can imagine the DOT pouring over your channel's footage over the years and finally getting the message now
One improvement I would add is to have the "OVER HEIGHT MUST TURN" flash on and off when the yellow light comes on.
The "Two Men and a Truck" vehicle is the same company that crashed about a year before in crash #93. Hopefully, they learned their lesson from that time.
Could be a different driver, who had the real common sense.
Oh I'm fowling this channel from Belgium. I hope It won't stop now...
Oh yeah, lived & worked delivery job ( cargo van..) right near there; saw a few crunchers:/
Also those coal trains would block Washington forever; just creepin' back & forth. Major PITA:(
Josh Woodward, close. What happens when there is a power outage? Still it would be much easier to lower the road bed then eventually replace the bridge when the city can afford to replace the old low outdated structure.
I am a retired car hauler for 30 years and what I am saying that most of the trucks hitting the bridge are rentals but most of the cdl ones turn.
I find much pleasure & laughter in this
i love how theres a channel dedicated to this bridge
I think the message on the sign would be more apparent if it were flashing, but so far so good.
5 years and 8 more inches and still going strong...
And now, in 2019, we can confirm that the 11foot8 bridge still generates many "can opener" moments. This flashing neon "OVERHEIGHT MUST TURN" sign installed in May 2016 made no noticeable difference at all.
Here are the stats by year:
2008 (7)
2009 (12)
2010 (7)
2011 (12)
2012 (8)
2013 (7)
2014 (14)
2015 (19)
2016 (15)
2017 (14)
2018 (12)
2019 (3) As of Apr 30.
Actually the "two men and a truck" movers truck did not turn because of the light but because they crashed the very same truck into the bridge some years back!
You can see them on the 2008-2013 compilation!
It needs to blink red fast back and forth on a horizontal axis to get their attention, we notice movement in our peripheral vision most easily..
I still believe they just need a hanging sign of the same height that says "if you hit this sign, you'll hit that bridge." Add a bell or something so it makes noise
That "Two Men and a Truck" could have easily been the first 'save' by those lights, LOL
Theres something that strangely more satisfying about watching the truck NOT slam into the bridge
I've seen one of these. Only, it didn't say "overheight, must turn" in white letters - it said "STOP" in flashing red letters. Nice to see this one is working, though.
