- It's part 2 of our squad review. This time we are focussing on the midfield. As with the goalkeeper and defender video we give our reviews of each player, overall score, and if we would potentially move them on for next season too.

Tonali was good in the Liverpool game. We lost control of the midfield when he was subbed off. He was by far the best player on the park in the Villa game. Was also decent in the PSG game. He was mid in the Brighton and City games but the whole team was awful. Same with Milan, everyone was poor (except Pope) but he was non existent. It was a difficult night for him emotionally.
I geeked out and watched much film of Tonali at Milan. He's quality.
We can't have the whole summer without you to having at least one live show a week. Even if I'm asleep, I'll watch the replay. We must build this channel.
Next season tonali won’t have the mental baggage, I feel he will come out the stalls flying.

Mark spot on re Tonali. We’ve heard from Gordon how he himself struggled to meet Howes demands when he first arrived from Everton. Add moving to a new country for Sandro to realise what he was coping with. He will show you all how good he is next season. Also his adaptability to play across all three of the midfield positions? Of course we have missed him.

J7 7. Would be more if he wasn't out for so long.
But how much we missed him was incredible.
Miley 7. incredible composure for anyone let alone a 17 year old!
I can't say I witnessed a mistake by him. We, as a team, missed him after injury.
Bruno 9. He is, IMO, the next level of quality in the team. Amazing.
And, to 'control' himself regarding yellow cards!
J7-6 only through injury, it showed how weak we were without his attributes. Bruno 9 consistent and the run without a card was unbelievable. Miley 7 amazing breakthrough season. Tonali 3 with the caviat that this season without baggage I believe we have an amazing player. Anderson 6 improving all the time, Longstaff 5 hampered by injury, always the scapegoat for fickle fans but a vital cog for us, Willock 5, much the same as Longstaff, Ritchie 4 time is up for playing for the Toon, however, would keep in a trainer role for u18’s or similar

@ianlbates 34 years old in the EPL will never be above a 5 unless worldly. I appreciate the fact he learned to drive the bus.
longy was poor for 3-4 months so 4 from me cant give him more just because he is a geordie or that he scored ready made goals tbf
Three for me truls, injured or not, he served up some absolute dross this year.

Willock 4. Brief flashes of what he can do positively, but also went missing a lot. A lot.

Can Miley be repurposed as a right sided forward? That would allow Gordon to play his preferred position on the left. You mentioned Foden, which is where he usually plays.
Longy 5. He runs his best, but I don't think his quality level can improve.
He misses a lot of passes, takes too long on the ball, but played with an injury for a long time.
Tonali 5. Would be a shed load more if he hadn't been playing with heavy mental issues at the time.
Next season we'll have a worldie
Anderson 7. He visibly looks like he is physically bigger - stronger - every game.
I think Tonali will be great. He wasnt great this season imo. Great in some games. Villa, and Liverpool from memory. Was pretty ordinary and lazy AF vs Milan.

Ritchie has been released. How much would we get for Anderson, Longstaff and Willock, realistically? Enough to buy one midfielder, given "Newcastle tax", probably. That isn't enough bodies for a season.
Richie 3. Getting on some what!
If 2 of ya top 3 get injured, we don’t look that strong, so I would bring in another mature midfielder.
Ritchie shouldn't be in this one for me, been a 5min winger. Get rid of him like 3 years ago.
Anyway, it's pretty obvious who are the 6 to keep if we judge them by potential. Sean and Matt, sayonara. Exactly what we do in dream land
Here’s mine boys - A six for Miley is like a seven for any established player, showed signs of flourishing into a truly good player at times. BG an 8, Willock a 5, Anderson a 6, J7 a 7, Tonali - a tentative “jury out” 5, Ritchie a 5 considering his limited ability to affect games at all at this stage in his career and Longstaff a 3. Yup. That’s about the size of it. If I’d been an outsider, hadn’t known about tonali and you’d told me a player at Newcastle was being investigated for betting fraud, I’d have said it was Longstaff. At times it felt like he was sabotaging us - missing sitters, falling over seeking a foul, fluffing passes, going totally absent (injury or not). He was dross.

I feel that Longstaff has become a pantomime villain, it seems the keyboard warriors have jumped on him, gets bad scores when he does ok, some of our fan base need a scapegoat and Longy has been it this season. Played through injury all season and gets hammered for it. I hope he comes back as a squad player next season and proves the doubters wrong. 8 goals decent effort and his best return
Miley has the potential to be anything, when he fills out into a man’s body, he will be even better
Dya not think the reason Tonali was not playing so well (villa apart)was that he knew the crap was gonna hit the fan and he feared for his future. I think we’ll see the real Tonali next season 🤞
I heard Jackie Milburn say on tv that Gazza was going to be world class and he was right.ONLY MY OPINION but to lump Miley with the same accolades AT This Stage is a tad too early but obviously hope your right
Worried for miley as i can see him being behind both longstaff and anderson in our managers eyes which beggars fckn belief
Looking at this midfield, Ritchie needs to go. And sorry, sell Longstaff for the ffp bullshit. Pure profit.
Some seriously uneducated misguided comments on some of our midfielders lads, especially Tonali , Longy and Willock all for diff reasons to be fair. All will show their metal with a run of games. Get behind them maybe? They might surprise you 🙏❤⚫️⚪️⚫️⚪️
I’ll get behind Longstaff but only once he gets off the ground from where he’s looking up at the ref and whinging, having fallen over whilst going backwards without playing a pass, whilst the opposition are flooding into our half on yet another break having just run clean through our completely absent midfield. I rate Tonali and Willock who had genuine reasons for marks no higher than 5 (ban, long term injury) but I don’t rate Longstaff who gets a three for having been FUCKING SHIT on numerous occasions. He and Almiron have been absolute bloody albatrosses round our necks all year. I can’t stand the pair of them.
I think uneducated & misguided is a bit hyperbolic mate? It's an opinion of how the players performed, everyone will have different takes & scores (as the comments suggest). Huge fan of both Miley & Anderson but I feel Sean has reached his peak & isn't gonna get any better so the club have a call to make. As we both said I don't think he goes & all bar Ritchie (now released) will be here next season & we'll back them as we always do, but if they perform badly? We'll say it like it is.
