Because marketing hype sells phones and electronics. Simple as that, just like people like the fact that Qualcomm calls their chips Snapdragon. It sounds cool so people are more likely to buy them.
Actually Bionic refers to the neural engine which is used for artificial intelligence, that was the year they added the first neural engine mainly for faceID.
Yeah, that's definitely the explanation I've had in my mind, too. It's such a simple explanation, it makes sense, and it doesn't take a whole video to do so.
Yeah I think bionic is somewhat derived from biometric. Pretty sure it had nothing to do with using all 4 cores at once though that was a nice upgrade at the time
A11 is not quad core, you can even see here at 4:25 that is has 2 performance and 4 efficiency cores. Also the Bionic name is due to the addition of the neural engine, the word bionic combines biology and techlology and therefore is refrencing the neural engine which is dedicated hardware that accelorates machine learing tasks
@John Bates Chip utilizes a neural engine, which is inspired from a biological neural network found in a biological brain. Remember, the word Neural also comes from the term Neuron which are Nerve cells found in the brain. So ya this architecture (Neural Engine) has everything to do with Biology and can be termed as Bionic without any issue. And by the way all modern chips today are equipped with a dedicated Neural Engine which helps in decision making. Neural netwroks help in predicting the instruction set which may be executed next by the user hence preloading those instructions to Cache for faster execution. The better the Neural Engine the faster is the performance.
@John Bates Well from your method of reasoning the term 'Neural Nets' should not exist as there is no neuron or nerve involved. Marketting works like that, a fascinating naming is adopted by many. We are not discussing shitty marketting tectics of Apple here. Why the name Bionic? well that is the small question and most relatable answer is the presence of Neural Engine. You started tagging me as ##### whatever, I think you are going too far. There is no point of defending anything here. This is not a battlefield, just a tiny discussion where eveyone is expressing their thoughts. No one is forcing you here to buy Apple products. Guess what, I don't have one either and don't plan to get in near future as well. Honestly you are streatching my comment to those areas where it is not ment to be.
I disagree, it all back to what “Bionic” even means Bionic means Biologically-inspired Engineering. What separates A11 and subsequent chips from the others is the inclusion of Neural Engine, which Machine Learning hardware designed to accelerate machine learning tasks that usually only living creatures are able to perform, hence “Bionic”.
When I saw this video and the channel name my immediate reaction was “How do I not know about this we’ll know channel”-I was shocked to see how low the subscriber count was!!.100% agree this channel deserves more subs.
bionic comes from mainly Neural Engine for Machine learning ... A11 had first dual core neural engine able to do 600 billion operations per second , remarkable technology for FACE ID and Touch Id back then , however in next year Neural Engine was updated to 8 Cores which had more efficiency and could do almost nearly 1.8 trillion operation (not sure) ..... it was same in A13 bionic with more efficiency means 8 core but in A14 and A15 the 16 core Neural Engine was breakthrough with nearly 15 trillion operations per second in A15 ... many may ask why Neural Engine is even a technology and what's it's job anyway , well mostly it makes the Cpu,Gpu processing more efficient and organised ,,, also it can do much more like help in image processing, implement touch id and face id better, live text, background remove from pictures, lookup pictures and etc..... Apple should give developers to get more access on using Neural Engines power for better integration of apps with hardware through machine learning which they have started already ... there are machine learning hardwares in other smartphone chipsets too bt apple is definately leading here near competetor being Qualcom !
Apple started using a Standard ARM Architecture, and on the IPhone 5s changed this with the Cyclone, and even the iPhone 7 the Architecture was the same with few Changes, on the IPhone 8 we had the implementation of the Neural Engine and the Change of the GPU with a TBDR Architecture, Apple needed more Energy Efficiency in its Chipsets, and the change of Architecture was fundamental. Today Apple is more modest changing few things, so as not to sacrifice the autonomy of the devices, always looking for Energy Efficiency, everything that is Too expensive in terms of Energy I see Apple discarding, so we do not yet see Ray Trancing in A Series Chipset, Apple is waiting for a change in Lithography to make an implementation without an expensive energy cost.
This channel is going to be massive one day with this kind of content. Keep up the good content my guy, it’s really epic. I’m going to sub with notifications on.
Simply because since the A11 Bionic Apple integrated IA core into the chip For reference the iPhone had only two cores until the iPhone 7 was out that introduced the big.LITTLE architecture The iPhone 7 had the A10 Fusion chip with 2 high performance cores and 4 high efficiency cores Then when the iPhone X (and 8/8+) was out Apple announced the A11 Bionic that has ONE neural core into used for IA task but most importantly Face ID From there every chip is a bionic chip
I think you are wrong, if you check "September Event 2018 - Apple" in 45:52 you will see the CPU architecture is called fusion still, the Bionic in the name actually refers to chips with the neural engine.
The X designation means Extra. The regular A12 came with 2 hi performance cores and 4 high efficiency cores. In addition the A12 had a 4 core GPU. The A12X design was a supersized version of the A12 boasting 4 hi performance cores, and 4 high efficiency cores. It also had a 7 core GPU. Then the updated A12Z version, added an extra GPU core for a total of 8.
Actually Bionic came from a couple of TV series in the '80s, the Bionic Woman and the Six Million Dollar Man. Tim Cook is old enough to be aware of them.
Biological + Electronic = Bionic In Apple idea, the chip mimick human design with an electronic device. But I don't see much difference with the non-bio competition, to be honest...
Sorry, this is incorrect - bionic is for BIO as in FACE ID being your BIO-METRICS - hence the iPhone X being the first phone with faceID and the first phone with the BIONIC chip

I'm sorry to say but the term that "it isn't just marketing but a different way that the chip works" is just bs. You know why? Because it IS a marketing name! Same as for "Retina": It is no industry standard. Apple just decided to name any display that has a higher ppi than whatever value as "Retina". Other manufacturers can produce these displays as well, however they do not as this is an Apple MARKETING term! Same for the "bionic"! Furthermore, I have to tell you that what you're telling us in the video is acutally wrong. No, the reason why Apple is giving those chips the "bionic" addition is not that multiple cores could be used at the same time. This is actually the only reason why multicore makes sence, otherwise it would be completely useless. The real reason is, that it uses machine learning technologies that analyze and optimize the behaviour of the user and therefore the way the OS is working. Please do better research before producing your next video.

I think the "bionic" name came from the addition of the neural engine which works similar to the human brain
But the engine was only introduced in the A12 when A11 was already called bionic

Bionics: biologically inspired Engineering.
Possibly LIDAR Scan Technology is considered Sensor bionics.
Why do they call Skynet Siri?
Back in the 1970's, there was a TV show called "The Bionic Woman", so the word is not new.
Why are Qualcomm Chips Called Snapdragon?
It’s because they’re fans of the hit Lego series, “Bionicle”
The Bionic name in the chip lost its meaning after the first Bionic chip, they need to make a new name everytime
Why did they add the names? prob just marketing
Because it is a cool word that few know the meaning of?
You sound like ZoneOfTech
Bionic is talking about the neural engine....
BIONIC
BIO - of relating anything earth materials used in the chip
N - any iteration of the chip or just "in"
IC - integrated circuit
New Chips aren’t necessarily faster
There all the same
Companies just make it slower making people to think that the new ones are faster but their not
Same amount of speed that’s all
I thought bionic means the chip having an neural engine
I thought bionic means the merging of living things and machine
