The political discussion at the end is fascinating.
I'm a fan of Bernie Sanders, which is evidently popular in Iowa, but not politically connected.
I wonder if there is willingness among the American populace, especially Millennials, to vote for "socialist" solutions to solve glaringly obvious problems. How long can the multinationals resist this force?
I mean, this guy is a stone cold killer, and I laughed about the "former-CIA, now I'm a journalist" schtick. But I accept him honestly and fairly, because that is how you guided the conversation. It was planned out ahead of time on your part, but it was clear he did not know what you would ask. The result is me understanding a person I would probably never have dinner with.

“The US won in Columbia it was a narco war” reality: coke is cheaper and more available than ever. What the hell did we win in Columbia?

The CIA facilitated regime change in Ukraine replacing a pro-Russia government with a pro-western one which then proceeded to unleash retribution on the Russian speaking population in the eastern parts of Ukraine. As my uncle Hillary used to continually tell me you win more friends with sugar than you do with vinegar - hearts rather than empty platitudes and bullets - or rather missiles in this case. I am afraid that Elliot Ackerman has little grasp of the truth with the "stories" he utters about what constitutes "victory." The truly wise American historian today is John Mearsheimer (who also served in the US military) and I urge you to watch his lectures on geopolitics and REALPOLITIK which is a word and concept we hear too little of today - reality rather than a theory of relativity.

“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.” The greatest American writer in my opinion - Samuel Langhorne Clemens "Mark Twain."

Steve Crane, thanks for sharing that fun quote! Twain had some great wisdom :)

American political morals collapsed a long time before the retreat from Afghanistan (it pains me to say this as America upheld the spirit of Magna Carta from 1776 for a such a long time.) But it's not just American morality that is the problem here but a near total lack of geopolitical knowledge. Afghanistan "the graveyard of empires" is one of those regions of the world where the geopolitical tectonic plates meet and clash from time immemorial but the British realised this the hard way at the end of the 19th century/beginning of the 20th century with the three Afghan wars and later in the 20th century the Soviets also came unstuck there. American foreign policy or rather military/industrial complex folly is best summed up by Albert Einstein's famous witticism “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.” It is also called hubris - overweening/reaching ambition - as Adolf Hitler found out when he invaded Russia in 1941 and met the same fate as Napoleon did nearly a century and half earlier. (Professor Ian Kershaw's second volume of his magisterial two volume biography of Adolf Hitler is simply titled "Hubris") Please God let someone of wisdom and common sense and historical perspective in the current administration realise this with the Ukraine/Russia proxy conflict today and negotiate a peaceful settlement before, as Elliot Ackerman put it so well, we sleepwalk into World War Three which may probably be the end of civilisation as we know it.

We have to build international relations that are built on the basis of respect and cooperation, not domination and control, and respecting the customs, traditions and beliefs of others. We also do not support the policies of countries like Israel that practice racism against the indigenous Palestinians of the country and commit war crimes for a long time. All these ideas do not cross the minds of decision makers in our country. Unfortunately.

@@BradCarr_ I think you are on the slow part of the exponential. But that is still great!
Landing good interviews and asking great questions is a winning formula, especially since you seem to know some interesting people.
Holy shit I'm looking through your list here, and I have to reiterate that it makes no sense that you aren't already way bigger on youtube. Your work with Zeihan is what got me to subscribe. I'm feeling put on the spot to offer advice!
Here is what I think: You are too true and controversial for UA-cam. Zeihan gets away with it by skill and chutzpa, both of which you also possess. But he survives based on people that don't give a damn about the youtube algorithm. If you want the same, you have to cultivate another channel until your reach is inevitable.
But what do I know? I'm not from Iowa.
