Sarah Thawer: Exploring Indian Rhythms On The Drums (FULL DRUM LESSON)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 3 чер 2024
- When it comes to percussion, Indian music relies heavily on the use of a varied array of hand drums. However, over the last several decades, many drummers have studied and discovered ways to bring the drum-set to Indian music by transforming the rhythms to work in the context of a full kit - and that's exactly what Sarah Thawer will teach you in this lesson.

Instead of lesson she should do drum to illayaraja music

As a guitarist, there is literally no other musician I like watching more than a good drummer. Absolutely fascinating and entertaining.
Bravo.
buy a drum kit, even better if it's just a kick, a snare, and hi hat. it's so fun transitioning from guitar and you already have a built up sense of rhythm as well
i actively encourage buying the worst kit possible and using your guitar pedals
same here ! I even look for R&B, hip hop, Latin or African drummers because their sense of rhythm is amazing, filled with all the nuances from their background.
It just feels so damn good when their technique is clean and rythyms are tight
Same as a pianist. The piano is a percussion instrument, with the feet and hands, but what drummers do ... PAHHHHH
It would be nice if instead of fighting over land and resources, countries just fought over who had the sickest beat through drum offs.
isnt this why people need different lands
Brazil would definitely be the winner.
Lucas FOR SURE
William D. Wilson LMAO!!!
You better mind your own business.
This is nuts. I’m a guitar player, have no experience drumming but can totally hear the traditional Indian influences based on the small amount of eastern music I’ve heard. She’s an absolute monster
It's not influence, it is indian beats. These are rhythms we danced to on the way to marriage ceremony, when you are the groom's side.
I just loved this cos it's the first time I've heard "Dha Ge Na Ti Na Ka Dhi Na" on drums rather than tabala!! I've played these variations on tabala never knew it would sound so cool on a drum set. So wanna get into drumming now!
It's the first lesson here in Goa! Every African music language is taught in this on Percussion instruments... Fo you know to play any percussion instruments?
You should, that way it would spread to more people instead of dying out within the next few generations. 🥺🥺

HAHAHAHAHA
Yeah, she has the greatest drum face I've ever seen.
Indeed😂😂😂😂😂😂
The most passion I've ever seen in a drummer. I think she's awesome!
Shot even my chemistry teacher makes that face!
I cant even begin to express how much i love this womans energy
Bro same
I love how hear earrings provide a backing track to her vocals...she IS music!
Sarah is a drum beast! She takes the last track, makes it her own and decimates it!
The best thing about her is she teaches in a way that even a beginner with no introduction to Indian beats can learn and incorporate. All without being holier than thou or condescending!
Kudos to the sound engineers for the tasty sound on the snare and toms
Thanks Drumeo for flying her down to Abbotsford BC, here in Metro Vancouver
Audio visual treat beyond words

Don't know why I'm watching this. I'm not a drum player. But I have to tell you, this girl is really making me stay here and watch this damn good video. Her way, her energy, and communication skills, style, just make me appreciate was she's saying and keep me glued to this informative video. WoW!!! She looks fine too.
Yeah - you've captured my experience as well. Amazing!

Jeremiah Diaz I totally agree! I want her in my life!
I love how intense and into it she is.
Jeremiah Diaz?, Drums really are Very Much Fun, I have Jamed with Heaps of people at Open Mic but one thing that's sad is open mic have all Closed Down?, but when U ask them to do something more Complicated music, they say I'll be right, we can go home now?, instead of Learning something New, I'm not saying there isn't room for Improvement, I reckon there is always room for Improvement on the Drum Set?. All in Reply to Jeremiah Diaz?.
I would love to see you bring up a drummer that would teach Nigerian rhythms. Just the way Sarah here is teaching Indian rhythms. That would be really cool.
Bit who? Tony Allen died 2 monthes ago..
Really sounds like our traditional rhythms!
atere olusola I agree some parts of it sounds like our traditional rhythms but not all.
@@atereolusola2497 yea there are some connections between west African and Indian rhythms! it all comes from Africa though at the root, like all humans
@@rosshoyt2030 yes but by that logic literally everything has a connection with African music which isn't true lmao it's almost as if cultural connections don't form in the same way as genetic anthropological connections
as a songwriter, hearing rhythms inspired by community and dance really inspires me. these rhythms had me dancing in my seat! it really goes to show how beautiful music is, and how it brings people together no matter where you're from, regardless of culture or background.
Just want to appreciate the sound of her earrings while she speaks! That style of earring is called 'jhumka' or 'jimikki' and it's often a staple in Indian girls' attire :) And as always, a well rounded, entertaining video saturated with information. Thanks for this Sarah!!
Extra percussion!
I've never seen a drummer having so much fun with such colorful beats.
Heading down stairs to practice right now.
Sometimes, just sometimes, the YT algorithm throws you a gem. I don't know shit about playing ANY musical instrument, but watched the whole thing anyway.
She is playing so good. Its like a fusion of east and west.
I dont know why over 1k people have disliked the video.?. There is nothing to dislike on her performance.
Keep it up Sarah. Never give up on your dreams.
Her musicality and skill are incredible - Jaw on the floor amazing
as an Indian learning the jazz drums. this is interesting to get to my roots. really gonna pick it up at some.point.

I remember the reception an Indian sitar player got at one of Clapton’s Crossroads festivals. He was very impressive, taking time signatures to an amazing level, very inventive, and the crowd loved it.
Most Indians learn classical music at young age and have a good base. And India is the land of festivals and you cant celebrate without music.
She’s got so much rhythm in her even her earrings are musical.
Her understanding of music and timing is awesome
Great drummer! Those toms sound amazing as well!
Yea it's cool
One of the most magical women in the world!!! Her joy, her musicality, one of the drummers I listen the most
Love you magical women
Her touch, dynamics, power, rhythm, and feel are all right on point. Magical drumming
i bet my non existent drum kit that shes the "cool aunt" in her family.
I don't know her but she'd be an awesome mom too
This was great! Indian, African, and Cuban beats/grooves are so infectious...yes!
Brasilian also are great
I think it's because those sre tribal in nature and it sounds more natural and raw, so a fresh change of pace...wouldnt u agree?
It immediately reminded me of the underlying tribal rhythms you hear influenced in a lot of Mexican music even to this day. I listen to electronic music that was made with indigenous beats in mind. Look up Tribal Guarechero if you really wanna see a modern adaption of beats from indigenous inspiration!

Danny Carey is going to watch this video and have enough material for 5 tool albums.

So awesome! I love when drummers show all their emotions when they play. Her face when she plays just makes me happy! and if it even needs to be said... fantastic drummer!
I wish she runs an online course. She's very clear and perfect in her knowledge and skills of Indian drumming.
She would be great on Masterclass.

THIS WOMAN RIGHT HERE. Such energy, got butterflies in my stomach like a teenager. Rock on, sister! ❤
Indian music is in the face you make.
Awesome video, fascinating.
Yeah they are awesome sounding toms.
Any hard resonating wood shell tom can be prepared to sound decent. If you meticulously tune each side you can get them to sound like that tight puffy tom sound she has going on with this drumset. Yours may not be as loud or as sustaining but with the right preparations you should be able to achieve a similar sound.
Obviously
Alex try Indian Carnatic Telugu music like" mandolin srinivas" jimi Hendrix of Mandolin. And many more Indian classical instruments are way beyond anything in this world.
Alex I'm indian
All I want in life is a a set of Tom's that sound that good.
IAmKrazyKyle same tuning is a struggle
I think that u can get out that juicy sound with some good micros and trigger... and of course a good engineer mixing the recording session ;)
If you have trouble tuning your toms, I highly recommend the video on tom tuning by Rob Brown here on UA-cam. Very simple but incredibly effective!
James Stanford I have, after several years of practice and screw ups, finally gotten my snare and toms to sound decent. They still don't sound anything like that though. (Difference in drum/ head quality and the mics would be my best guess as to why). I will check out the video though, thanks.
Yeah the quality of the drums and the heads will take you further but the video is a great starting point.
You know why she's called Sarah Thawer? Because this video melted my face off.

holy smokes! had me on the edge of my seat. The power behind the beats and the amount of skill is very impressive.

Some of the most impressive drumming I have heard in years. Most solos I find can leave you hanging and unfulfilled but she picked me up and took me with her 100%. Wow, amazing and I am still looking for words to express how I feel after that.
Sarah she was a real pro drummer and she learned Tabla in India, and she played some incredible beats that some have not heard, thanks.
15:46 she got the camera man grooving! mission accomplished. awesome grooves, i hope more people attempt to incorporate them into other styles of music like rock, metal, hip hop, jazz etc. Get those heads bumpin

she should make a tutorial on how she tunes her drums, especially those toms
Way too amazing
Mess around with tuning your batter and reso heads to the exact same notes. You're welcome..
Record them, put a gate and a reverb and you're done !
Hey! It's Indian Melody and style to keep the toms tighter than usual. My first kit was an Indian one and its toms were naturally similar to hers (similar). Tighten up the upper skin and mess around til you reach the exact note.
Very nice sound on toms
Her earrings are very percussive and sounds great too.
One of the best sounding/tuned toms i've ever heard
Sarah the great percussionist. Very knowledgeful of Indian rythams. I enjoyed her skill on the Drums. What an energy. amazing.
The Force is strong with this one...i love how she uses the kit in such a musical way, and her highly educated and fiery way of explaining her rhythms is very insightful and refreshing , this is an excellent lesson. Plus the drums sound amazing!

This Lady is a brilliant audio-scientist. I enjoyed every second of this.
Wow she knows that last song like the back of her hand. I don't even know that I have that good of memory.
@@ricktheexplorer i don't she knew how to play that. It seems more like an improvisation. Still its awesome some can be that creative and use such unique and eastern flavors and motifs to something so western as the drum set.
Damn. She's super talented, insanely fun to watch, and the songs were some real bangers, too. Thanks, YT algorithm.
This is so cool! When I was in college I got to see a couple of tabla clinics given by Sandip Burman. He gave a detailed description of Indian rhythms and the Indian approach to time signatures. I always left his talks so inspired to apply some of what I learned from him on the drumset. Thanks for showing your own application of Indian rhythmic ideas!

This is awesome - I love this! I'm a big fan of traditional Indian music. Thank you so much for posting this! I am going to practice my fretless bass along with these rhythms. Also, I think that anyone who is criticizing you perhaps does not understand the rhythms and tonal systems of Indian music. Indian music often employs very complex rhythms ( often in odd time signatures ) as well as the idea of microtones. I guess the microtone example does not apply in drumming videos, but they're still a huge part of Indian Music. These concepts do not even appear in most Western music so perhaps this is why some people are challenged when trying to comprehend what's happening musically.
Please tell me you have already heard Mohini Dey. She does exactly that
