Un-Common Merganser Behavior Looks like Laughing
Вставка
- Опубліковано 16 тра 2024
- Have you ever seen a Common Merganser laugh? I've seen this a couple of times now, where a merganser will raise their head and appear to laugh silently, creating ripples around them. I searched online for answers but could find no reason for this behavior.
Some thoughts/points: - no males were around, just the two females.
- does the water create ripples that attract fish?
- does the behavior signal to other mergansers to gather and hunt together?
- is it possible they call at a frequency inaudible to humans?
- I did not see them dive to hunt at all while I watched, but the water was definitely deep enough for them to do so.

Its incredible to think they're making sound that we cant pick up with our ears.. great looking bird Donna, loving their funky haircuts 😁💞
Me too, the feather-do of the females always makes me smile. I would love to be able to figure out if they're making a sound and hear what it sounds like.
Beautiful waterbirds Nice sound of water flow
What a beautiful capture Donna dear 😘
Nice to see ❤
Great shot of the Goosander or Merganser
It is funny to watch the laughing like behavior
Like the slick back hair look
Thanks for sharing this interesting creature
Cheers👍
Thank you so much! I quite like their feather-do's as well!
I think she signal other to joint her❤ beautiful relaxing to watched 2:54 hope you have a great weekend Donna 😄♥️
very nice and rare sharing friend...wonderful and interesting....big like
I have never seen a duck like this before. She looks very beautiful.
What's interesting is that we humans can't hear them.
Thank you for introducing me to this silent singer.
Warm greetings!
Donna this bird has a good sense of humour lol. Love that it looks like it’s laughing. I have never seen one. Beautiful bird! 👍😊🇨🇦
Glad you enjoyed it. Thank you Christine.
Interesting laughing-like behavior.
Pretty Mergansers, I sure haven’t seen that behavior before. You got a nice close view- I usually see them a bit farther away. I would guess they’re making a sound, but we can’t hear it… great to be able to see! 👌⭐⭐
Thanks so much, Jennifer! I'm leaning towards the inaudible frequencies - it really would be interesting to find out how it sounds.
Nicely film Donna (she definitely looks like she is laughing 😆)
You Lyndon Have a great weekend 🙏🏼
Simon 🤠
They do look like they're laughing, Donna. I haven't ever seen this until now with your great footage! Don't know if the vibrations attract fish or not. But, I'm attracted by "Good Vibrations!" 🎶🎵🎵 "They're givin me great sensations!"
Lol, next time I'm floating in a pool I'll have to try jiggling the water to see what happens.
As you say, the bird appears to be shaking its body and making little waves. Perhaps it is a signal to stay away? I enjoyed the beautiful image.😀👍
Thank you so much! It's an interesting behavior.
WOW, wonderful capture of ducks. Great video.
Amazing observation of un-common Merganser behavior. Thanks for sharing. Big LIKE from me.
Fascinating observation Donna. I have never seen this but would guess she is communicating as you mention in a sound we cannot hear. I am interested in all kinds of bird behaviors especially when a predator is out of sight but an alarm goes out for birds to be aware or gather together without seeing the danger yet. Thanks for showing the merganser's behavior so well! Best regards, Cathy
Oh Donna I had to look that up and het the Dutch name for this bird ( Grote Zaafbek). It is a most intriguing duck sort for sure. Great capture. Lovely to see so close up 👌🥝🙋♀
It's definitely a fascinating bird despite being so common around the northern hemisphere. Thanks for watching, Anita!
Lovely common merganser. I think She calling someone 😊
Hallo Donna, sehr schön, vielen lieben Dank dafür 👍 wünschen dir ein schönes Wochenende ❤ danke für gegenseitige Unterstützung 🔔 Siggi & Anne 👍
Great pictures, very beautiful and very interesting shots
Hi Donna, Thanks for sharing these great captures. 👍👍
Have a nice new week, Greetings. Manu
Interesting! There seems to be some 'calling' but not at a level that would be heard by a human. Her behaviour definitely seems to be about attracting other mergansers. Will keep looking and if I find something, I will edit this post. Thanks for sharing dear Donna.🤗💚
Thanks so much! It's definitely an intriguing mystery.
To me it does look like it's vocalizing so if that's the case its out of our hearing range. The other possibility is that it's a stress response to you being too close. Maybe trying to look threatening.
I'm leaning towards the call out of our hearing range. Not sure about the stress response as they usually just swim away or fly away. I wish I had stayed put and watched them longer to see what they did.
Hello
This is a video of the "Common Merganser" bird
It's a very beautiful bird

Thank you Donna, beautiful filming!!!!!!
Glad you enjoyed it, Stephen! I held onto this footage from last year as I was trying to find an answer.

Goodness, gracious me. She's having a bad hair day.
Lol, yes, I always giggle at the female mergansers with their bad feather-do's.
Not sure that I've seen the uncommon merganser before or up close anyway. Have seen the common quite a bit . Will try and find out what their laughing at😂. Beautiful ducks they are, thanks 🤝
Be well y'all
Wow beautiful. i haven't seen this bird before. You captured it very well. 👍
Interesting to see the behavior. Maybe it is just a courting thing they do. Shake it baby! LOL. I hope you find your answer to what they are actually doing. Have a great day.
Never seen this behaviour before Donna, very interesting though. I hope someone enlightens us all to what it means, lol. Nice video.
Me too, it seems like it could be some frequency inaudible to humans but I still don't know for sure. I would love to try to isolate the sound and hear what it sounds like. Thanks so much, Jay!
Interesting watch. It is also a beautiful brid ❤❤❤
He looks happy ❤may be playing tricks on us😂
She could be for sure. Thank you.
So interesting video. Nice nature video. Thanks for sharing.
Wow... That's amazing... 1:34 you are right about inaudible frequency!! chances are there... May be am act to hunt fishes underneath!!! I really don't know... But very interesting to know about this...
Hello Donna. Again, beautiful video. Thank you. Greetings and have a great weekend.🌞Pavel🦊
Thank you! You too!

I don't know the exact reason for this behavior, but I know about birds that they always plan their wishes, from mating to hunting, with sound, ultrasonic waves and even certain movements.
Thank you for this good video ❤❤
Thank you for watching.
Thank you for the video of the beautiful bird calls and nice shots.♥♥👍

Thank you! 😊
Keep uploading such great video My friend
So beautiful and calming content, salute
Never seen that before Donna - some good theories as to why she was doing that.
The Mergansers that we have around here are always a bit skittish and far off
But you captured some great behaviour there. Would be interested to see if you can find anything out about that.
Me too! So far no one's been able to say for sure what they were doing. I wish I had kept watching them to see what happened afterwards.
Very interesting observation! I wish we could understand their language to know what's happening 😀
hahah Miss Donna
You made me chuckles on this. Another great observation. Is she singing/talking???? nice hairstyle.
She is beautiful ....Maybe complaining about no fish at fish market??? hhaahah
Thank you for making my day, Donna. BTW I really enjoy JP shrine......
Thank you Ms.Kayak. So far no one has come up with a solid reason as to what she is doing. I wish I had watched them a bit longer to see if they started to feed after.
Beautiful, thanks for sharing My friend
Thank you! Cheers!
Wow beautiful., You captured it very well.
Thanks a lot 😊
Nice footage. I think all of the ideas you suggested could be possible.
This is a wonderful video of you with great footage. It was very interesting to watch. Many greetings 😀
is a so nice bird, thanks for this video
Thanks for watching
Michael Jackson strutting and singing Billy Jean; is not my lover…….
I hadn't thought of that, maybe she's singing. Would mergansers be Michael Jackson fans? This requires some pondering.

You have a very good eye Donna! Interesting observation...and interesting possible explanations...
