Grebes Nesting and Ducks Fighting at Amisk Wuche on a Cold Morning in May (Elk Island National Park)

- Spring was in full swing despite the chilly morning in May. We were only able to visit a short trail today, and opted to visit Amisk Wuche. Some highlights included watching some Red-necked Grebes building their nest and some Common Goldeneyes fighting for breeding rights, including involving some innocent bystanders. Great watching the grebes working together and building their nest Donna. You came across many birds with very interesting views of the male goldeneyes. How wonderful to find nesting grebes. The park looks quiet and peaceful, totally my kind of place, enjoyed watching.
It looks quite windy and there is always a bird call or song around where you are walking dear. This place is so rich with bird species I guess. Very beautiful sharing, dear.

Very cool seeing the grebes building the nest. I don't think I have seen that behavior before either. I always love finding boardwalks in marshes as well and that first one you found certainly needed some repair after the winter. Interesting seeing the ducks fighting in the pond. That was a wonderful hike, even if it was cold for you. I hope you are having a great weekend! 😊👍

Interestingly the distinctive plumage of goldeneyes alone is not sufficient for breeding, they have to go into a fight. At least it helps to warm up on a cold morning 😊 👍
I guess he got jealous of the other duck's good looks! It was an impressive fight even with others getting splashed in the fray. Thanks so much for watching.
That is so neat to see how the Grebes build the nest in the middle of the water. I agree with you, pretty incredible it can support the bird and all the eggs. I also like seeing the goldeneye duck.

It is beautiful place
So many species of waterfowl and we loved the short stroll, Donna and Lyndon. Roots may appear to look like steps, but I've tripped over my fair share! 🤣🤣Never fallen down any steps. Yet, anyway! Being an old time Brewers fan, I've called the Orioles worse things! The Grebe's floating nest is a great way to stay safe and I wasn't aware they did that. Thanks for bringing us along on your chilly tour.

Well this was super relaxing after a mammoth day of trekking. 'An innocent duck got goosed' is my new favourite quote from this channel 😅 the grebe nest doesn't look like it should function, but somehow it does! Looked chilly there and the wind sounds like it coukd cut roght through you!

I have never seen this kind of ducks before...The feather color has character. OMGoodness are they nesting in the middle of the water?
Is that floating like a tube???hahhaha I see a beautiful team work here between male and female.
I hear strong winds blow through woods and they make rubbing noises..spooky...I am hearing a bird singing all the time in a distance but did not know where??? here you are an expert to the observation. Thank you Ms. Kayak. Yes, the grebes nest out on the water's surface, but usually I think they're more nestled in among the reeds for some protection from the wind. Have a great day.

A lovely walk, nice to see some of the fungi etc.. that might be easily missed when on such walks. Also the wildlife was brilliant, the nesting Grebes in particular, as the Grebes at my local park don't nest out in the open so this was nice to see. Great video Donna.

Loved seeing the Red Necked Grebes and a couple of species of Duck that I've not heard of or seen before.
But just wow - the Goldeneyes!! Amazing footage. Very violent!! A bit like watching Coots fight. We don't get to see that here as the Goldeneye overwinter but fly North for breeding.
And wonderful to watch the display too. We do see them displaying on the water, but haven't seen these out of water displays - very cool!!

It was a great morning out and I really enjoyed seeing the grebes building their nest. The fight was also awesome - I haven't seen any fight so aggressively before. The one on the log was so cute, it makes me think of a man flexing to impress the watching ladies.
That was a delightful walk Donna (so peaceful 👌🏻) so much life (the floating nest 🪺 was a new one to me ) a brilliant evolutionary idea 💡

I have always been fascinated by Grebes and their dancing displays. Amazing to see the Goldeneyes squabbling too.
Great work and lovely scenery along the trail. It was strange to hear you talk about cold winds - it is currently 28 deg C in my garden! Very humid too - a little too humid for a long walk. I think I will have a very early start for the next one to avoid the heat.
