- Another classic 80's interview of August Darnell aka Kid Creole and Andy Hernandez aka Coati Mundi of Kid Creole & The Coconuts.
This time in regard to their roles as judges for a MTV Basement Tapes promotion.
Coati was so talented. Actor, musician, singer (and rapper/check the album ;)), now tv show creator here! Give this man some credit.
This is right when the band could have broken through Stateside but alas, they did not. Was always aware of Kid Creole et al but Endicott was the first single I became familiar with. From In Praise of Older Wome and Other Crimes which is a fine record was never promoted and didn't get much airplay. Just replayed it recently, it's real good. Not as good as th earlier albums but...Right around this time, the Kid and Andy did the morning talk show rounds in an effort to get out the message. That message being the band is a great one! Comment about them getting in trouble was Kid talkin' 'bout how the color barrier (paraphrasing) got in the way of the band's success in America. I believe he's right since nationally, the only black artist with wild success in The States at the time was Prince. Kid Creole and the Coconuts were a great band in the studio but especially live and I'd love to see them get some recognition. Like entrance into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame, though noone's holding their breath on that one, I will guess.

On tour '... travelling with an entourage of over 120 people ...'! Wow, that's some organising involved there! Not to mention the costs involved. Never-the-less, those years were characterised by an overflow of creative genius that, in my opinion, has not been seen since.

These artists are great just the way there are they don't need Hollywood hey there on you tube etc those who never heard of them are now hearing of them may I add now days the most talented musicians singers ain't famous but there musics on you tube etc they make money from.this there recording past present future are there for you to buy there ringtones to am from Springfield gardens new York were infamous singer from there also named Brad Lundy works on you tube even new stuff another infamous from there the moments.these people can make lots funds god gave them there talents he's now given them another way to success &our famous in USA these days are artificial singers musicians computerized voices music.
