Augusts brother Stony Browder was the musical genius who started the whole thing with Dr. Buzzard. I loved that band so much. Sadly, they were so underrated and yet so amazingly creative and original.
BTW CM has his own channel @CoatiMundiWorld ....lots of cool stuff on there including DBOSB clips. Check it out and subscribe.
This is a great interview! Shows how balanced and adept August & Coati are and were able to step past Bryant's annoying cut-your-statement interview style.
these guys deserve waaay more credit for there creativity and flat out showmanship. Compared to todays music if there music does not make you feel good then your brain dead!!!!
Agreed.
Here are a few clips of them from @CoatiMundiWorld UA-cam Channel. If you haven't already subscribe to him.

Of course ONLY in the BIG CITIES with forward thinking masses. OF COURSE sophisticated European cosmopolitan city dwellers with audiences hungry for the Big Band , heavily Latin inspired music by AMERICAN music geniuses such as the creators of Dr. Buzzard and The Savannah band that morphed into Kid Creole and The Coconuts, Coati Mundi etc. would find an underground audience so vast and huge that August Darnell and Sugar Coated Andy Hernandez flew under the radar with massive wings that they passed right over the deep, deep hole ....cultural hole that spans between Los Angeles, Miami and New York. We understood the music when it was so miserly aired on the disco radio stations 40 plus years ago. We got it. We understood it. We Latinos and African Americans created new dances from it because this music is not just for listening to. Thank you August and Andy for being so much a part of my youth. Your music like music in general is a driving force on Black and Latino culture and history.!
From Andy " Forgive the belated response. Thanks Kouzez for forwarding this comment and gracias Eric for the lovely sentiments expressed ... keeps me inspired ... check out this video I just uploaded to my UA-cam channel ... read the description box and you'll find a link for a free download. I first saw them on a vcr tape of videos from BET that my friends mom sent sent to our ship in the navy. Soon followed by multiple zoot suit purchases.
Actually, two of the originals were Americans (White)
Check out The Ritz Videos on Coati Mundi's channel @CoatiMundiWorld ....
Coati is cool😎
august darnell...the man.
They look like to have fun and not take themselves too seriously. That's just the kind of people we need in america. They didn't make it in america cause we take ourselves too seriously.
exactly. I really admire these guys and everyone in dr. buzzard's savannah band. very cool, sophisticated, and intelligent.

Damn August is so articulate ❤❤
August is so underrated. he was too far ahead of his time.
Yeah, he's incredibly bright and articulate as well. Why on Earth weren't they bigger in America?!
Looks like a Cab Calloway revival flew over Americans heads... but Europeans really dug it.
He reminds me of a cross between Morris Day and Cab Callaway

It would be great if Gumbel would let them answer a question without interrupting.
They were so grateful to him for bringing them on. Unheard of for this group to appear on a prestigious national show in the USA. It was very cool of him!
They are muy badasssss and the coconuts are the andrews sisters on shrooms

How long before you go back teaching English? How insulting is that? Gumbel has been forgotten and Kid keeps rollin.
I hear what you are saying. However August and Coati were not household names so at least I give credit to Bryant Gumble for bringing them onto a major platform based on a video of theirs he watched. He deserves to be cut a little slack.
"Coconuts is a term we used in high school to speak of Caucasians with blonde hair." "There Before the Grace of God", co-written by August Darnell, was a song about an Hispanic couple who wanted to move to the ‘burbs to get their baby daughter away from “the blacks, the jews and the gays”. I love it when "minorities" (particularly Democrats from of all places "Brooklyn") show that THEY - more than any white Republican on the right - could be as racist and race-obsessed as the people they accuse of being "racist". THANK YOU, KID CREOLE. You're a real "class' act.
Actually “There But For The Grace of God Go I” is the correct title.
In the song, bigotry is denounced without reference to a party affiliation. The lyrics may be based on an anecdotal event but the main message is anti-bigotry in general. Doesn’t matter whether it comes from so-called minorities or the Caucasian majority or Republicans or Democrats or what have you.
WADR, I do not believe that the writers meant for the song to be weaponized in the fashion you expressed or for it to be used as a tool for one to engage in gloating.
Having said all that, I wish you and yours peace and love.
Can August Darnell speaks about how he has been influenced by Mr Dynamite the Godfatjer of the Soul Mr JAAAAAAMES BROWNNNN !!!! “ Say it loud am black proud “ .... “MAKE IT FUNKY ..... “ give me some HORNS ..... COATI AND AUGUST are excellent entertainer and musicians !!!!!

They couldn’t hang with Earth Wind and Fire,Commodores and Chicago let alone Morris Day and the tyme.
They didn't need to .... all those groups mentioned are great however KC&TC had their own unique style that defied classification. BTW, the groups you mentioned respected them and vice versa (WADR the correct spelling is "Time").

@@KKouzez Yeah,It does matter Kid Creole didn’t have the song writers the bands I mentioned did. It is the music industry. Industry meaning $$$$$$. If your putting out the money for a band of 7-9 players to tour they need radio play, album sales Etc.
@fuzzybutkus8970
WADR If you don’t care for them then you don’t care for them. You are entitled to your opinion. Nothing wrong with that. The groups you mentioned are nice choices.
Of course, radio play, album sales, etc. will help facilitate success for an artist. You’re not saying anything profound just stating the obvious. You don’t have to be a genius to know that.
However, if you are going to compare bands then it can get quite silly and you might as well jump in a rabbit hole. Just like sports who is better Lebron or Kobe (RIP) or Earl Monroe? As far as songs, well different folks may find a fruit sweet and others will find the same fruit sour.
If you wanna compare then those bands you mentioned didn’t have the writers the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Prince or the Temptations had. So what!!! They found a niche and they did well for themselves. What even determines what writer is better than another? If it is strictly money then “Happy Birthday” made more money than any songs by those acts you mentioned or even more than any Beatles song.
Even less popular genres like Jazz and Latin music don’t have the success of pop groups; still, they have a following and their music is just as viable and meaningful to many folks. I rather listen to ‘Round Midnight” by Monk than Feelings by Morris Albert even though the latter sold a ton more records.
Kid Creole and the Coconuts were not trying to hang with anyone. They were doing their unique thing and did it quite well. Maybe not so much in the USA but this is a big world. They did fantastic overseas where they played sold-out shows including stadiums and arenas. Even in the USA they still sold out Carnegie Hall. Not an easy thing to do so you have to give them some credit based on that alone.
Just watch this clip from 10 days of sold-out shows in the Hammersmith which was a record at the time. Watch a shot of the audience.

Enough said.
Peace
@@KKouzez My last four words Record sales,Concert attendance about the bands. Obviously we come from 2 different places but we did carry on a conversation and didn’t call names or insult each other’s mothers so you know what. I think we could be friends. You have great taste in music. I never said I didn’t like K.C. I was just commenting on why he never made it big in the states. Horn bands as we call them have never been real big here. Like I said so expensive to put on the road. If you had choice as a promoter. Would you back a 3 piece band like Rush,Grand Funk( from my little home town Flint Mi.) or a 9 piece band like Slipknot?? See what I meant. You have a great rest of the summer my friend.
why the boring music over th interview.
Well, it has a purpose, and some folks like it and actually recognize that it is from Dr.Buzzard’s Original Savannah Band. Sorry, you found it boring but I understand. Thanks for viewing and commenting.
8 March 3018: I like August Darnell as Kid Creole. His style is just cool and suave. My favorite song by him is "I'm a Wonderful Thang, Baby". That is the band's biggest and best hit song. The other songs are just okay.
What? That's completely backwards. That song sounds like your average upbeat funky R&B song of the early 80s. It's actually their worst song of all the ones I've heard. They have entire albums that are smokin' with hot jams. "Male Curiosity" is genius. There's nothing genius about "I'm A Wonderful Thing." Still a decent song, though, of course...
Many mistakenly took these guys and their band as a mere showbusiness act, but they are GREAT MUSICIANS in their own right !

I don't get what you're saying. Could you rephrase that?
This band was absolutely the real deal, and not as commercial as the many mainstream acts that radio and MTV actually supported in the 80s.
