Rory...Power is Power, think of baseball, football, boxing and even ping pong and chess. Attacking is always preferable but the third shot drop is a beautiful finesse and counter shot with the purpose of gaining advantage. As you said both the drop and the drive are essential for pickleball. I really enjoy your videos!
This is why defending against 3rd. shot Bangers has become yet another necessary P.B. skill . Once learned , a finesse team can & usually will win . It begins with ALWAYS returning the serve DEEEEP(!) , then punch block counter attack volleys back @ the Bangers feet , hopefully keeping them back at their baseline , BECAUSE THAT'S WHERE YOU RETURNED THEIR SERVE ! ( Did I mention , return the serve deep ? )
At 3:24, you discuss the new rules regarding the spin serve. As a point of clarification, it is still legal to put spin on the ball when you serve it. You just can't impart spin on the ball prior to the paddle striking the ball to send it on its way. This is from page iii of the 2023 rules: "Spin Serve (4.A.5) Manipulating the ball to add spin during the release of the ball is not allowed. Some natural rotation of the ball when it is released is allowable but the server must not impart manipulation or spin prior to striking the ball to serve. This applies to the volley serve and the drop serve." To me, it looks like Porter is imparting spin on the ball with his toss prior to striking the ball with his paddle, which is now illegal in 2023. It also looks like he is imparting spin on the ball when his paddle strikes the ball, which is still completely legal. I love your instructive videos!
Hey Rory, I believe the spin serves you're talking about that is band is the "chainsaw paddle spin serve" and the "finger snap spin serve". These two serves are totally illegal and I'm glad that it is!!! The rest of spin serves are legal as long as you serve making contact with the ball below the waste line. Please correct me if I'm wrong, thanks.
You're right. The serve that Porter is using in this video is totally illegal now. Because he can no longer use it, he is nowhere as competitive as he once was.
Bangers win, and they beat me often. Often with less skill, just by constantly hitting really hard. Like Rory has said, dropping and dinking games are so much more fun and require more skill. I will continue to play this way even if I win less.
I agree. I would rather play a softer game and lose than just hit the ball as hard as I can. I played three games yesterday in which my opponents never hit a ball into the kitchen. It's just wasn't a lot of fun.
@@Abbiedupre7 Wrong, I can hit extremely hard with lots of topspin. I’m trying to elevate my game beyond just that. At least for me, it’s much more difficult to hit good drops, dtinks and resets. The best players can play both ways and use both methods strategically.
Wrong. I can hit really hard with lots of topspin, probably as hard as you. Broke a ball yesterday. I still think the soft game takes more skill. .@@Abbiedupre7
People are really nit picky about players ratings. These are great players. Was the PLAY 5.0? Some of it was some of it wasn’t but I tend to give people benefit of the doubt.
I'd really like to see you 'pick apart' a singles match, particularly beginners no better than 3.0 level. They make up a huge part of the community and your analysis could really be helpful to a lot of players.
Just Google Porter Barr. By some, he is considered a pickleball phenom. That's when he was like 12 or 13, then he developed that spin serve that he used to win many, many matches. Now the serve is no longer legal and he will have to up other parts of his game. I agree, that even with the now illegal serve, he is not 5.0.
So am I right in assuming that any serve that kicks left or right will be an illegal serve? I agree those spin serves are so dangerous. I’m out of action now after trying to return one of those. I see the doc in a couple days to see what damage I incurred.
Sorry to hear about your injury. I always hated that prespun serve. It's not how the game is meant to be played. I can return it but gives servers bigger advantage.
We all miss shots, so I look for how quality and difficult a shot is when looking at a players grade number. Jennifer had some good returns, but I'm not sure the others are 5.0. also, I look for people making changes as the game goes on? I saw no thinking or adjusting in this game. A 5.0 is going to do both. quick for young people nothing to write home about.
Thanks for reporting that out. I know who Porta was. At the time. I did not know who Annik was. I know he just played in a final recently against Ben Johns.
Great video Rory. Thanks for the insight and commentary. Solid players - high level of play. I agree with you - the “Come on” screams by Ivy are iffy. I appreciate the passion but they seem a bit too much
Thanks for watching. According to the title of the video on youtube, this is 5.0 in Minnesota. According to someone who replied, Jennifer is ranked #8 in the middle states region.
The "better" team lost this one. That's pickleball; it happens sometimes. At about 11:08 Porter's weird serve sent Jennifer all the way against the padded wall. From that point forward, it looked as if her left leg was somewhat injured, and she was favoring it. I think she whacked her hip on the padded wall and it did "something". Rory, you do a good job with your pick-aparts. Keep them coming!
I don’t think better team lost. The girl in the grey shorts couldn’t get a drop/reset to land in the kitchen. High drops/resets got punished. Everything else (spin serves, stacking strategies, etc) was minor compared to impact of those mis-hit shots. Soft hands as important as “power”
Jennifer is a gifted player with great potential. But the one issue keeping her from greatness is she always hits the ball right to her opponent. She need to learn to hit to where her opponent is not. What separates the pros is that they can hit to anywhere on the court. Example Anna-Leigh Waters.
If you've ever watched the pros play in person, you will see they can put the ball wherever they want it, whenever they want to. That's what separates them apart from everyone else.
@@MrConte29 Thanks for watching. I think she's a very, very good player. However, I think you would admit, the play on the west coast and in the southeast is, over all, a tad better than the play in the middle state region.
It also seems like she dances at the kitchen line a bit, frequently falling back a bit prematurely. I think if she stood her ground at the line she’d win a lot more points when the ball is sped up.

This has nothing to do with your video, but the one kid with no third shot drop looks kinda like Bieber’s baby brother. I’d love to know why he (and others) wear a baseball hat backwards. The purpose of a hat like that is to block the light from your eyes. If you are going to wear it backwards, just don’t wear it at all. It serves no purpose backwards. I know you have nothing to do with how he wears his hat, and really enjoy your format. I look forward to your next video !
Thanks for the comments. I must agree with you. I think a backwards hat looks even more ridiculous on someone who is over the age of 50 and is wearing it outdoors in the sun. Very good point. This guy is maybe 18. I guess I can give him some slack.
Teenager wears hat backwards because he might have a messy hair so wearing hat to cover it or to be cool. I wore hat backwards all the time to cover my hair when I had to go to 8am morning class and didn't have time to shower 🙃.
I wear a hat backwards to keep sweat from my hair dripping down into my eyes. So yes, it is functional. Furthermore, if the purpose of a hat like that is to block sunlight, why doesn’t it bother you that other people in the same game are wearing the same style of hat while playing indoors where there is no sun? I thought you were concerned about the hat’s function to block sun? Perhaps there is a giant hole in the ceiling allowing natural light in 🤔
