Goddamn... the last 20 minutes of this are so sad in retrospect - especially when you know Patrice was no longer with us just 2 weeks or so after this originally aired. He sounded like he really had, or at least was in the process of turning the corner and on to the next bigger and better stage of both his life and career. His death robbed us all of greatness and not to be obvious or cliché but especially Patrice himself.
But, to see Patrice fade out at the height of the passion of his ethic, his righteousness and to never have sold out, is beautiful. Patrice lived and died literally being the epitome of a tragic comedy. Its fuckin Shakespearean. But it would have been nice for Patrice to go on until at least, around 70. He would be one of the most infamous people of all time in the modern cultural climate of the western world.
He pretty firmly did not want to take care of his body. Even in an interview after the roast, Shatner said he thought Patrice was content with his coming death.
im not a OandA fan, however i couldt appreciate them more, they doubled our listening time of patrice content. they allowed him to rant to his hearts content. they would tell him "WRITE A DAMN BOOK" while everyone else went "Oh patrice stop it". Thank you Opie and anthony for gifting us with such amazing patrice content. Thank you so much.
Brandon Walton he consciously didn’t go for the fame. He even said he had offers from Disney n shit like that but he turned me down cus he wouldn’t be able to be his full self
Patrice died a soldier of his own platoon. I spot comments mentioning his self destructiveness and how he could have made it blah blah blah... He was doing things for himself not for the thirsty audiences. The more comments there are about what the entertained wanted from him, the more his isolated behavior makes sense to me and I have high respect for limiting his gift to the entertainment world.
GamerGamer i see more messages of respect and admiration than i do of post life criticisms. Every video hes in there are 50 comments expressing sadness at his death.... a real example of art being more valuable after death.
Commander and chief , last man standing in the comedy war patrice started, like rambo he destroyed the crowds and embarrassed his felllow marines/Comedians. True hero of laughter
I agree. You don't want to pander because although you might increase your audience, you lose respect. You still gotta eat though, blowing up as a cult figure after you die isn't going to feed you today. I think artists struggle with this dilemma and most choose filling the stomach because no one wants to go out like Tesla or Van Gogh. That's what separates the mediocre from the great, however. Patrice was one of the greats and I believe time will only show this more.
Damn, it is sad how much you can hear the weight of facing his mortality in Patrice's whole voice and demeanor here. What a fucking powerhouse person he was. Intelligent, no-bullshit, a true searcher and deep thinker, big heart, beautiful soul. I wish I had been more aware of his brilliance when he was alive.
I'm so glad all these Patrice O'neal recordings are on here. Because of him I found out who Colin Quinn was and Jimmy Norton. I was missing out on a lot of funny.
It's so bittersweet to hear Patrice now. I miss hearing his point of view, and especially that amazing laugh. I don't know anyone that comes close to filling the void he left behind. :(
Thanks for sharing! Love Jay and Patrice! Listening to them just casually chat, it's easy to forget Patrice is gone:(...Every time he makes me laugh it's like he's still here!:)
Caleb Routh he would have been a podcast superstar. He was candid, off color, unapologetic, whip smart, didn’t suffer fools and one of the funniest people ever. He’d probably be in the top 5 comedy podcasts alone and would make others rethink trying it too. Gone too soon. Sad that he’s not around anymore.
I’m so Glad and grateful that The Opie and Anthony show was able to provide content for some of the best on air comedians and conversationalists. Patrice O’Neal, Jim Norton, Colin Quinn, Uncensored Louis CK, Jim Jefferies, Rich Vos, BAWby Kelly, Otto Peterson aka Otto and George, Greg Geraldo. It’s a shame it had to end but we have 20 years of Archived clips. Glad I was able to be a part of the show instant feedback, Wackbag, Pests, MsgBoardVeteran Now I’m in the #ChipArmey
I know everyone says it and then half the other commenters say “you weren’t a fan when he was alive” but I don’t give a shit about the latter. I was a fan then but that doesn’t matter either way, I fucking miss Patrice. What a introspective and HILARIOUS man with such original ideas and takes on everything from race to culture, the industry to religion, and everything I’m between or outside the lines. Nothing was out of bounds or off limits and he was unrepentantly honest. There will never be another human comparable to Patrice. Thank god for O&A for giving us so much Patrice material we would never have had otherwise. RIP Patrice and thank you for all the laughs, tears, and all the things you made me think or look at in a way I never would have even imagined without your perspective... I wish he could have known how many people he truly touched and made laugh until they cried. Thank you Patrice and thank you to everyone who uploads these things and allows us to enjoy things we missed at the time.
I don't know if responsibility to audiences is a way to say but I personally have to thank Jay and Patrice for getting me thru some of the darkest times of my life.
I just started this podcast, does Patrice mention Camu. Heads don't know. Weathermen fan since the Fondel'em days. RIP to both greats. MHz,Wethermen....
I heard Patrice went out and bought a microphone and recording set up after doing either this podcast or Marc Maron's, with the intention of starting his own.
This being so close to his death is sad. Patrice seemed to genuinely understand how his self destructive behavior was holding him back, and knew how to change just enough to finally release his greatness to the masses and the industry.
Man having Patrices book on male female relationship shit would be awesome , and having his PODCAST to listen to at least once a week would have been awesome
read your "Get well soon" in the description and i was like "Wtf man he aint gettin any better" ...then i saw the date of upload.... Rest In Peace Patrice
people here commenting about jay and patrice and thats cool. what i love about this though is these are two completely different people but you can tell they've known each other for a long time and they speak who they really are to each other. love that.
My dream is having doug, patrice, uncle joey and bill on jre, when i get to heaven, there will be a computer with this podcast buffered waiting for me to hit play.
To have the opportunity to have a stroke...live for awhile longer allowing time to reflect on all you've been through and all you've missed out on simultaneously and also make peace with your creator as well as yourself...such a gift and a blessing...I'm almost positive Patrice gave his life to Christ and then gave up the ghost...a mind so intellectually stable and analytical most definitely would capitalize on such an opportunity.
patrice was so close to figuring it all out for himself. i have the same attitude about work, life, and being successful without hating yourself or selling out who you are for money.
Patrice decided he didn't want to be a martyr that only youtubers in the 'know' would love. He decided it was okay to try be successful, and saw that he could do it-- and he died. There is no way to rationalize how tragic this is for people who love comedy, and love Patrice.
Lowell Isaac sometimes I feel like he figured it out and the guys on top took him out before he changed the game for everyone but I don't think we'll ever know for sure

I didn't get to hear patrice until recently (as well as a few other greats like otto), and although I think people idolize him too much, he was no doubt a free thinker who lived life on his own terms, and I can respect anyone who does that without apologies
Jay Mohr's lifeblood is money. Patrice was integrity. And funny. And a legend. Half this interview is Jay Mohr telling Patrice to do shit and take work he doesn't want to do for money and fame. Rest in peace, Patrice. Legend. Jay Mohr is junk. My opinion.
Man every time a big news story comes up I can't help but wonder what patrice's opinion would be and how he would end up making me laugh about it. So much worse when someone so loud and full of opinion dies.
I hate to bring this up but Patrice would have eventually done Rogan's Podcast which would have been good.. Rogan is a friend of the O&A crew so they already know eachother I can see some deep discussions going on
ThaWiseJester i know this somment was half a decade ago but patrice would have done rogans podcast for the sake that they've known eachother since the Boston comedy club days. They are both from mass too. Both friends with burr, norton, keith Robinson, Dane cook, Bobby kelly. Patrice was only on OnA because he already knew norton previously.
Patrice Podcast would have ruled, his blindside was himself and just how near to great he was, Jay puts him up with greats like Chris Farley in later podcasts, must say this is a pretty eloquent and educated youtube comment timeline.
Yeah, i agree with everything everyone is saying here, Patrice was just coming into his own around Elephant in the room. He covers such a broad spectrum in his comedy and the things he talks about that it seems like he was just sort of placing all the pieces of who he was together. He's so divergently different from any other comic, its a shame we wont get to see the final picture of what he was becoming as a performer.
He admits that it's a flaw of his and I agree. Sometimes he wrongfully believes that in a comedy podcast, he has to constantly be dishing jokes every so often. That's why I like Marc Maron's interviews. There's comedy, but more than anything you get to know the person. You see where they're coming from.
I'm a bit of a racist. And that being said, I'm a huge fan of Patrice for many years. Patrice O'neal was a man. To the fullest extent of that word. Wise, light-years beyond his time. Nothing but respect to this great thinker. Goddamn, I miss this guy.
This is so fucking heart breaking. Patrice was just getting his shit the way he needed it. It had to take this long. That's life. He had to go through what he went through, to arrive at where he was the last two years. And he was about to get it all. ........Fuck this shit. Fuck it all.
Ugh. It's almost sickening to hear Patrice talking about his future in the business. Sad loss here even after all this time. We can only imagine what Patrice would have gotten into in the past two years, but I'm sure it would have been great.
It's ironic he didn't want to be a martyr but ended up becoming one. He was just waiting for his Chazz Palminteri opportunity and it would have come if he had just stuck in there. Jay was trying to goad him into selling out to increase his audience but all it takes is one Slash or DeNiro knowing you and you're in your breakout role. I think. I have no idea how it really works, but that's the word on the street.
