First of all, thanks a lot for the video, It was the reason I took the time to do this myself. I just finished replacing the trim on our 2019 RP190 Hood River Edition. In my opinion the awning does need to be removed. Below are some steps for what I did to remove it. 1. Remove the 6 small screws under the awning (two at each end and two in the middle) that are angled upwards. These secure the awning to the bracket. 2. With the screws removed the awning can be lifted upwards off the bracket and lowered to the ground (Bring a friend!) 3. Remove the 8 or so screws from the top of the awning bracket that secure it to the roof. 4. Remove the 11 or so screws securing the bracket to the wall. 5. gently pry, pull or cut at the lap sealant until the bracket can be removed from the side of the trailer. From here I suggest cleaning up the lap sealant from the trailer and the bracket and replacing it with fresh stuff when reattaching the bracket after completing the trim repair.
Thanks John. The vinyl trim on our 2021 rpod 196 split. I noticed it looking in the rear view mirror when I was pulling our camper a few weeks back. The part for the vinyl trim on your Amazon site was exactly right and your video was helpful. It only took me about 30 minutes to replace the vinyl trim. Thanks again!
Just as I was getting ready to give up searching, I found your video! Thankfully, this same information applies to my NüCamp TaB 320 (and presumably TaG). While I was hopeful there was a tool to get the job done, I am still grateful to know the technique. Thanks for taking time to post this video!
When I winterized our HoosieRPOD 179 last weekend, I noticed some cracking of our vinyl trim. I plan on replacing it next spring thanks to your great DIY video and links. :)
First I wanted to say thank you for creating this video. I believe I read that you have sold your 179 but ours is still going strong thanks to your maintenance videos and suggestions. The vinyl trim inserts on the front edge going over the roof of our R Pod 179 cracked on our last trip. I guess the sun finally dried them out and bouncing down the road that day let them fall apart. In any event I knew what to order, watched your helpful video and set out to put up the ladder to get it done. The drivers side was easy and quick. The passenger side on our 179 has the awning in which the bracket covers the majority of the trim on that side of the trailer. (A next to impossible task to remove the caulk, screws and awning and bracket to get at that trim insert.) I chose to leave the awning in place and remove the bad vinyl insert up to that awning bracket having found the remainder still in good order underneath. I simply overlapped the old and new vinyl insert by about 4-inches and added some clear silicon caulk to keep the two pieces together. The screw trim seemed to accommodate the overlapping ends being doubled up. I'm hoping the silicone caulk will provide some additional strength. Time will tell if highway speeds prove me wrong on this. Happy camping !!
Thanks for the vid. Good stuff. The front trim on my 2020 195 (yes 2020 model) disintegrated just a month after I brought it home. Easy peasy and materials are relatively inexpensive so I just handled it - figured a warranty claim would be more trouble than it’s worth. The one I got looks to be much better quality. I couldn’t believe how thin and flimsy the factory stuff was. I got a huge roll and will replace all of it eventually, as needed.
I am glad you posted this as I looked at the trim on my 2018 179 and one side was significantly cracked and it's only 2 years old! I have to admit I store it outside in the elements without a cover and even though I put a protect wax it every year, I should also put on vinyl preservative on the trim otherwise I will be replacing it a lot!
Mine did the same. I replace mine yearly. I went to the almond color as black draws heat more and in turn the vinyl breaks down faster. Almond does not crack as fast. I also caulk the cap to stop water from getting under cap. My screws rusted and I had to replace all of them.
Replacing trim on our new to us 2014 179. Did not have front end caps, no screw holes showing it’s ever had any. Maybe that’s why we ended up with streamers on the highway. Ordering end caps now. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!! We’d be having a tough time without you! 😂
Thanks for this John, I just noticed that my trim has split from the heatwave we are experiencing. I was concerned as to how to do the repair but your video has given me the confidence to replace the trim myself on my 182G
Excellent tutorial John. I had to replace both long pieces on my 2019 191. Apparently it will be a once process here in Texas, sun just drys them out and they split. Had the dealer do the one under the Thule awning.the other was as simple as the video showed. Thanks for sharing.
I just purchase the vinyl you had listed, even the pictures on amazon are different from what I bought( also from Amazon) in Feb. wish I had tried to replace them then, it would have been returned. And this is not my first rodeo with any trim, I worked in the Auto collision industry all my life, just got a junk product from Amazon, made in China.
Have you ever flipped the trim over and installed it that way. This method puts more outward force on the trim and it stays in place much better. It looks like you are installing it upside down but the additional pressure that holds the trim in place prevents it from blowing out.
Don, I haven’t done what you are mentioning. Have you tested it with water to ensure it still runs off properly? My concern would be leaking into the track and onto any metal screws in the track. Thanks!
@@JohnMarucci Water gets behind this trim anyway as it's NOT a water tight seal. I just reinstalled the trim using the method I was asking about and it LOOKS good. And on the plus side -- it's tight. I'm happy with the install even though it was harder to install. I don't think the wind will blow it out like the factory installed trim.
Just had to replace ours on our 2019 R-Pod 178 My problem is that it has an awning and I can't get under it. Had to go up to the awning where the vinyl was OK and lap it couple of inches and seal it.
Jim, That's about all you can do unless the awning is removed. You can also inquire the R-Pod owners forum as I am sure other owners have run into this issue: rpod-owners.com
John, Just watched your weather trim video...thanks! Question, should I put a dab of caulk or sealant on top of each screw before replacing the trim? Thanks, Rich
Thanks for all the great videos! We have gotten so much help from all the information you post. We have a 2016 Rpod 179 and it looks like we need to replace the trim around the slide. Would we use the same weather stripping that you used for the roof?
Your videos have been so helpful with maintaining and repairing our own 2018 RPod 176. We just completed replacing the cracked vinyl trim insert just as you have shown in your video and it looks great. Thank you! We do, however, also need to replace the cracked vinyl trim insert around the bump out. The bump out has four plastic corner pieces attached one to each bump out corner with one screw. The plastic corner pieces don't want to come off after the screw is removed and we're afraid of breaking them. My question after looking at all of the old, cracked trim is: Are the trim pieces actually held in place by these screws? I see that the top trim piece on our bump out isn't even long enough to go under the plastic piece on either top corner of the bump out. Can we cut new trim and slide it under the plastic corner pieces adding some caulking on the ends or does it need to be held with the screw that is there? Thank you!
Cindy, as far as I know the vinyl trim piece itself is simply tucked under the corner plastic piece and the screw does not hold the vinyl trim in. You may be able to slide new trim in without removing the corners. If you do need to remove the corner pieces, you may want to use an automotive trim tool to remove the silicone caulk around the corner plastic areas. If you do this, you will need to re-caulk the corner pieces when you reattach them. Hope this helps. Thanks!
John, I forgot to add that there was a winged cap out there that installed like the cap you are installing, but it also goes over the cap itself. Sort of a v shape sideways. This cap helps to stop water intrusion into the side rails. Its a better product.
How do you measure the width? I see 3/4",7/8" and 1" trim out there? The inner slot on mine is 5/8" but the outer grooves are about 7/8". So does the 1" trim just bow out and squeeze down to 7/8" or what?
Just replaced ours, they were all cracked on our 190! The OEM replacement seal from Forest River is plasticky and will fail in a few years of high temp exposure.
Great video as always. Have you ever replaced the slide out trim...the wide one that goes completely around the slide out? I can't figure out what to order if I replace mine.
I have not replaced the trim on the slide of my R-Pod 179. Unless it splits on me, I don't plan to, as it means removing the end caps and reattaching them. There is risk of not getting the caps back right and causing water intrusion issues. The vinyl trim itself looks like the same width as used elsewhere. Thanks!
John I’ve recently had the trim I’ve replaced come out again during traveling. I’ve placed it back is and same issue. Replaced again and still comes with a half hour of driving. I have the end cap stewed but this continues to be a problem. Any suggestions would be appreciated!
I think if there is any gap between the vinyl and track in the front at all, air can get under the vinyl when in motion. I had something similar happened and placed a few very small dabs of clear silicon caulk a foot or so apart on the vinyl at either side of the track to keep it in place. I did this on the front of the trailer about half way up. It seemed to help.
Hi there John, As Always, great informative video. I have an RPOD 189 and had to replace the trim. I did and on my first trip out it flew away. So, what did I Miss? Thank you for all that you do . Eddy
It likely is either the vinyl wasn't pulled tight enough or more likely it wasn't tucked in all the way at the front side of the trailer and wind got under it while traveling. I had something similar happen to one side for about 4-5'' of length. I did dab a touch of silicon about half way up on either side to keep it in place and haven't had an issue since.
John, love you videos, so helpful on the pod maintenance and repairs. I know this is an older video, but we just lost our trim last trip on one side, and the other shows cracks and needs replacing. Was thinking of doing the wiper trim around the slide as well, ss it's now 3 years old and is showing some wear also, even though I treat the rubber quarterly at a minimum. Have you ever done the wiper trim? Or know of anyone who has done a video specifically to the pods. I have seen other UA-cam videos on replacement but not on RPod specifically. Thank you.
Lane, I have not dealt with the slide seals or replaced them. I do not know of an R-Pod video on the subject. I think either a general UA-cam search or hitting the owners forum might work: rpod-owners.com
I’ve replaced mine but on 2 separate trips from Arizona, through California to Oregon on the i5 the trim got very hot and stretchy and came out of the track along with the wiring that the trim also covers. It was very stressful both times. I know there is a more rigid trim that can be purchased but I can’t seem to find it. Do you happen to know the product I’m looking for? Any help would be much appreciated and relieve anxiety while towing my Rpod 171.
Unfortunately, I do not have knowledge of the product you mention. I had something similar happen on my Rpod and put a few dabs of silicon on the grooves between the material and metal rail to keep it secure. It may not be the best solution, but it worked to keep the material from working loose while driving.
Thanks for the video-just found our trim on the slide-out split in half. Could you post the link for the part in comments? Having trouble finding it. Thanks again. We watch all your videos.
Hi John, Again thanks for the video. Question...on the front end of the RPOD, installing the curved roof rail vinyl trim, I do not have an end cap. It looks like the vinyl trim is bent under the under the rail vinyl end point. I checked the lowest two screws to see if they screwed in the vinyl, but appears they don't. Looks like somehow the vinyl is bent under the end of the rail and somehow slipped under the rail...but I can't seem to pull it out. Any thoughts on how to lock down vinyl trip without end cap? Thanks, Rich
Not sure without the end cap the best way to lock the vinyl in. You may want to silicone it in somehow at the end to secure it. You may also want to ask on the R-Pod Owners Forum: rpod-owners.com
While on my last trip the Vinyl Trim on my 2016 Class C RV began popping out on the inside curve behind the cab door, since I was traveling the best way to fix it was to glue it back with a little silicone adhesive to prevent it from constantly coming out again. Now that I am at home I want to replace it. Is there a brand and thickness you prefer and do you purchase it on Amazon? Thanks.
Someday I will probably have to do the trim replacement on our 191. Your video will be my guide for this process. However, we have a power awning that covers a good portion of the trim on one side. It appears that removing the awning and the frame may be necessary in order to get to the trim on the top of the Pod. Have you any experience or suggestions on removing the awning and frame?
Tim, my unit doesn't have the awning, so I do not have experience with it. I think at very least you'd want some else on a ladder helping with the removal if you go this route. You could inquire on the owners forum to see if anyone else has dealt with this. (www.rpod-owners.com). Thanks!
It could be if one or more of the screws underneath the trim have broken or isn’t there. Usually windows and doors are the culprits. Do you know where you are seeing water pool inside the RV?
First that's where I thought a leak was coming from...into the bathroom of our 178. Turns out the Dicor sealant around the bathroom vent had degraded and cracked over the past 8+ years. Replaced all the Dicor with new and she recently has undergone several rain storms and showers and no leaks!
Hi John, thanks for the videos. I'm a recent RPod owner just (bought a 2017 171). I have found some cracking along the vinyl trim (not split open but it does feel brittle to the touch). Should I replace this yet? My gut feeling is yes but I may wait until it gets warmer. It looks like metal under the trim so I'm hoping it's ok to wait a bit.
Thanks for making this video, John! I noticed you didn’t have an awning on your 179. We have one and it covers the top portion making it Impossible to get that the trim. Would you suggest just replacing the sections up to the awning?
You have not covered the fact that the screw cap allows water to enter. Blocking the end traps water under the cover. The black screw cap cover expands and shrinks in the weather. The screws under the cap deteriorate and must be replaced with age. Mine rusted badly. There are many issues that need to be addressed in this area. The screw cap cover needs to extend out over the side rail. Yes I contacted Forest River about this. They couldn’t care less. It’s a built in flaw that can and will destroy a R-Pod. Mine is a 2017 RP-172 Your floor rots out in front and back because you trap water in the screw cap cover when you put the end cap on tight. Please give it some thought.
Good video as usual, have to do this on my 189 before covering for the winter. Did you check your screws? Many who have done this replace the non galvanized factory screws at the same time with equal or bigger sized galvanized and have commented that many of the factory screws were rusted.
John, thank you for all the time you put into making great informative videos. Question - do any of your videos deal with the routine inspection and maintenance of exterior caulking? My rPod 176 is now 2 years old and I am starting to see signs of splitting / cracking in the caulk. Specifically I am wondering if the old caulk must be removed.........or...........if the new can be applied over the old. Any thoughts you have are appreciated. Bob in Grand Rapids, MI
Bob, I do not have a specific video on caulk inspection and replacement. You can apply caulk over existing older caulk but make sure you clean the old caulk well before applying a new bead of caulk. I don’t like caulking but have done it many times on small portions of seals. I put painters tape on either side of where I want to lay the bead of caulk. You can see some of how I do this in my RPod leak repair video (link below). If you think it needs more attention (bad enough to replace) you may want to have an RV tech look at it. Search for a mobile RV tech in west Michigan. Hope this helps! ua-cam.com/video/e6vaQWMHS7E/v-deo.html
@@paulg8586 Yes water does get in under the trim , also each screw should be pulled and replaced one by one with a good sealant like Lexel . Then put the cover on . Factory does not do that , that's extra time and money . Watch any trailer repair video and screws are always rusted behind the insert trim .

You certainly can if you like. It would likely provide some added seal to the screws. Thanks!

Not much. I not longer have the R-Pod, but I think I put some silicone caulk on the gap to create a seal.

The plastic corner pieces don't want to come off after the screw is removed and we're afraid of breaking them.
Thanks!

It may not be the best solution, but it worked to keep the material from working loose while driving.
@@JohnMarucci thank you. I’ll try that.
Thanks for the video-just found our trim on the slide-out split in half. Could you post the link for the part in comments? Having trouble finding it. Thanks again. We watch all your videos.
Here is what I used on my R-Pod 179: amzn.to/2QfyIK9
Hi John what type of caulking did you use on your trailer?
Usually Dicor self-leveling or non self-leveling depending on the place on the trailer.
Great video. Do you know if the 2016 171 is one inch as well?
I do not know for sure but I do think it is similar. You could ask on the owners forum: rpod-owners.com
Thanks.
Bob, most widths of trim are similar but it is best if you measure the actual width of what you have, then search Amazon for that length. Thanks!
Hey John - the trim from the link you provided offers Heavy Duty, Narrow and Standard. Which did you use?
I’m fairly certain it is not the narrow. The product page has changed since I posted the video. You may try standard 1” to see if that will work.
My water heater box is starting to pop out of the side. Do you have a video on that? It should still be under warranty.
I don't have a specific video, but if you are under warranty, call your dealer and let them know. Thanks!
Excellent instruction video. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks!
Guys, would a failed trim piece on the roof edge be a source for leaks?
You should be fine to wait until it warms up a bit. The trim will be much easier to work with if it is warmer. Thanks.
Where can I buy the rubber insert?
The vinyl insert rolls are on my Amazon store here: amzn.to/3Y71k62
Thanks for making this video, John! I noticed you didn’t have an awning on your 179. We have one and it covers the top portion making it Impossible to get that the trim. Would you suggest just replacing the sections up to the awning?
I think that may work vs removing the awning to replace it all. Likely with awning covering the trim, it may remain intact. All the best!
In true rpod quality control my back had the strip cap the front was left longer and glued with silicone to under the trailer
Mine is a 2017 RP-172
Your floor rots out in front and back because you trap water in the screw cap cover when you put the end cap on tight. Please give it some thought.
Makes sense. I sold my 179 a year ago. You may want to share this on the R-Pod owners forum: rpod-owners.com
Good video as usual, have to do this on my 189 before covering for the winter. Did you check your screws? Many who have done this replace the non galvanized factory screws at the same time with equal or bigger sized galvanized and have commented that many of the factory screws were rusted.
I didn’t see any issues with the channel screws on my 179. Not a bad idea to replace if you have rust issues. Thanks!
I have a 2018 Rpod 179, what width trim do i need?
This is what I used for my 2017 R-Pod 179: amzn.to/3rpTofj (affiliate link)
@@JohnMarucci Thanks appreciate the info. Great channel!
Thanks very helpful
Glad the video was helpful!
Should I put caulking around trim? Water must easily enter around trim. Not sure that trim alone is enough.
Paul, no need to caulk the trim. Water will not get under the trim unless it is cracked in some way. Thanks!
Thank you John for your quick reply.
@@paulg8586 Yes water does get in under the trim , also each screw should be pulled and replaced one by one with a good sealant like Lexel . Then put the cover on . Factory does not do that , that's extra time and money . Watch any trailer repair video and screws are always rusted behind the insert trim .
Awesome. Ty
Glad the video was helpful!
What about the piece that the vinyl goes into? I'm going to replace the whole thing. Not going to bitch about the putty the last guy put on.
If you’re talking about the end caps that screw into the body, you’ll likely need to ask Forest River for the exact part. I reused mine.
Trim should NOT be installed tight. Push back into the channel as you go. Cold weather will shrink it and if it's too tight it will break.
Good point Jeff. Thanks for the comment!
