Don’t forget when the Blue Jackets traded Jake Voracek, a first and a third for Jeff Carter. Carter didn’t even play half a season with Columbus before getting traded to the Kings. The first round pick ended up being Sean Couturier.
The third in the trade ended up becoming Nick Cousins
Hurts to this day, especially watching Carter lift the Stanley Cup in LA that season. Luckily Howson isn't the GM anymore.
The Canadiens were light years ahead of everyone in the 70's. The Kings were actually looking like they might finish behind the Seals so the Canadiens pulled off another trade.
They sent a player to the Kings to help them play better so that they wouldn't finish last overall. Talk about protecting your investment!
Ralph Backstrom
I'm fully anticipating Toronto's trade to be in this: Rickard Rakell and John Gibson. Ouch.
Scott Niedermayer, Roberto Luongo, Tyler Seguin, Dougie Hamilton, Brandon Saad, the list goes on
Tyler Biggs baby!!!
@@gregorywong3049 can't forget Percy
Raycroft for rask too
Also traded a pick for Toskala. Turned out to be couture.
I feel like the Erik Karlsson trade might make this list in the future.
Most definitely the top 15 draft is crazy compared to recent years
I mean that pick is pretty much guaranteed to be stutzle or byfield so it for sure will
Erik Karlsson will be the ruin of the San Jose Sharks. Scary bad signing, Amazing Doug Wilson still has a job.
@@tedlicciardello7673: The Sharks really could have used their 1st round pick this year. As a Senators fan living in the SF Bay area, I still remember when the trade happened. My friend who is a Sharks fan wrote off the pick as a late 1st rounder. I told him to be careful, because we can't say for sure what the state of the Sharks would be in 2 years.
Or the Matt Duchene possibly. But eh we got god mode of Mackinnon afterwards
Hi great vid lol, this is probably Edmonton’s first time not being in a draft pick video for a bad rea- wait...
I’m thankful every day that the Oilers GM gifted us Mat Barzal.
Gifted you , your whole offensive core , Beauvillier, Barzal, Eberle? and people still pester them wondering why the have been sucking for so long
Lou Lamoriello still needs to sign Matthew Barzal and Ryan Pulock, that's not going to be easy, with limited cap space.
Justin Shields they have plenty of cap space because of expiring contract this offseason
@@krevew4553 I'm sorry they don't. Matthew Barzal next contract isn't going to be cheap. Your looking at the 8.0-10.0 million dollar range per year. His contract alone could deplete most of the cap space.
Justin Shields I’m sorry they do. The islanders currently have 4m available in cap. This offseason Griess has a 3.4m contract expiring. Martin a 2.5m. Brassard a 1.2m. Kunackle a 900k. That leaves us with roughly 12m. On top of that the cap is expected to increase next year. Therefore the islanders will lock up both Barzal and Pulock and will definitely be in great shape for years to come.
Fun fact
St. Louis traded player (forgot his name) who turned out to be a bust, to Ottawa for the 16th overall pick in the 2010 draft. St. Louis used that pick to draft Vladimir Tarasenko.
Ottawa would eventually flip David Rundblad to Arizona for Kyle Turris. While Turris is not Tarasenko, he was clutch for Ottawa being their Number 1 Centre from 2014-2017 and was key for Ottawa in multiple playoff series (including their 2017 run). So it turned out okay for them in the end.
Though the thought of Tarasenko anchoring a line with prime Spezza and twilight-years Alfie does make my mouth water (let's not forget being fed by Erik Karlsson and Sergei Gonchar). Who knows maybe with Tarasenko, Ottawa may have had a Cup in the case. But, without that trade, we do know St Louis probably doesn't so we know who won that trade... even if Ottawa recovered well from it.
EDIT: While Turris is comparable to Tarasenko during his time in Ottawa plus being a faceoff god! I'd rather have taken Tarasenko as Aflie and Spezza between 2010-2014 put up a few 60point seasons between the two of them. Add in Tarasenko and they'd have a finisher they had not had since Dany Heatley. Ottawa would have gone from a bubble team to a play-off favourite when you add in Karlsson and Anderson. The only issue they would have had was a 2nd line center (who Turris filled the role of), but they could have gotten that in Free Agency without much issue (or Zibanejad would had filled in that role and would had probably gotten more room to thrive without Turris and probably still be a Sen). So, yeah not the worst trade Ottawa ever did, but I do believe they could have been a series threat between 2012-2014 with Tarasenko.
Us giving up Vasilevsky still hurts today. That’s why we have Stevie our GM
Well that's why to this day i still say that Ken Holland should have stepped down as wings gm in 2010 and let Steve Yzerman takeover
@@mikebarber12 When I build my time machine, I will go back and fix that problem. (g) Now this year. Do you choose from a small center or an average sized defenseman at #4? Or do you trade down for more draft picks? In the future we may be talking about this decision changing things dramatically, too.
Quick thought on the Habs success in the 1970s: Ken Dryden was their goaltender (whom I believe is the second greatest goaltender since the expansion era began), and they had one of the best two-way forwards in league history, Bob Gainey. Not to mention, they had an absolutely stacked roster too. Even without Guy Lafleur, they still would had been dominant those seasons and the outcome would had been the same.
Elvis Merzļikins Fan Most importantly, the Habs had Savard, Lapointe and Robinson on defence. The best top three defence the league has ever seen.
Agreed that they were stacked but same outcome? Not sure. Flower was the best player in the world when Orr declined, if he’s not there, they don’t win 4 in a row, Boston was very good too, 1979 went 7 games, Habs won on the iconic late Flower goal. The Bullies were still very good too, 1976 was very tight, not sure they win with out #10!
I'd like to add that the 2nd round pick that the Islanders got from Edmonton, they traded with their second to move up to get Beau. So that us almost a double whammy
Your whole offensive core actually Eberle, Barzal and Beauvillier. Reason why they still are bad even with Mcdavid
@@therandomguy2121 I mean you are right. I kind of get the Ebrele and Strome trade. The Oilers wanted to get younger to grow with McDavid, but them straight up for each other, even then I was confused how that happened. The Reinhardt trade I don't think anyone will understand why they traded that much.
hockeyfan361 It would have been atleast understandable for a 1st but a 2nd too? he should have been gone along time ago did more damage than good
At the 2013 Draft, the sharks traded their first and Pittsburgh’s second to get Detroit’s first, it technically ended up being Anthony Mantha and Tyler Bertuzzi for Mirco Mueller
To OTT: Zdeno Chara, Bill Muckalt and the 2nd overall pick (Jason Spezza)
To NYI: Alexei Yashin
Also worth noting for the Griffin Reindhart trade, the Islanders also received the #33 overall pick which they then used to trade up to 28 to select Anthony Beauvilier, another very solid NHL player, who not quite up to the level of Barzal currently, is an incredibly talented and relatively productive young player in his own right.
Might as well make a video about all of Toronto's terrible trades 🤣 great video as always
Andrew Shaw traded to Montreal for 2 2nd Round picks,
One of which became Alex Debrincat, the other becoming Chad Krys, who the jury is still out on
The Habs absolutely finessed the golden seals for that pick 🤣🤣
Anaheim Trades: Fredrick Andersen
Toronto Trades: 2016 1st, 2017 2nd
2016 1st: Sam Steel 2017 2nd: Max Comtois
lol
Quebec Nordiques trade Dale Hunter.
Washington Capitals trade 1st round pick 1989 (Joe Sakic).
Fleeced!
Phil Kessel is a two time stanley cup champ.
The Dallas Stars trading a 6th round pick in 2010 to Ottawa for backup goalie Alex Auld. The Senators used that pick to draft Mark Stone.
When I clicked on the video, I knew the Vasilevsky trade would be on here - and it was the first one mentioned lol
Islanders traded Zdeno Chara, Bill Muckalt and 2001 first round pick for Alexei Yashin
That draft pick turned into Jason Spezza
That’s a big yikes
@@OhNyquist Milbury's entire venture with Islanders is a big yikes
Nice video. To be fair, that Edmonton first round pick they traded to NYI was originally Pitt after they traded for Perron. Imagine had Pitt kept that first rounder.
do a vid where you look back at picks people thought were bad or a bust and turned out to be really good
KInda missed the part in the isles oilers trade with the 2nd Round pick the oilers gave turining into Anthony Beauviller
Not NHL but the Yankees pick in 2009 went to the Angels because of the compensation for Yankees signing Mark Teixeira from Angels. The Angels selected Mike Trout with that Yankees pick.
Corey Schneider becomming the pick that selected BOWIE WILLIAM HORVAT comes to mind.
Chirelli is done in the NHL, his record is absolutely horrid
Islanders got gifted their offensive core by Chiarelli. Eberle , Barzal , Beauviller all for a bust and Ryan Strome who wasnt any good for them. Oilers could have been annual contenders if they got rid of Chiarelli
Great video!
Btw now you are right with the NY rangers prospect pool with lafreniere now loll
1:08 "he is already the winningnest goaltender in tampa bay."
You’re videos are so great I watch them all
Schneider for the pick that turned into Horvat
Schneider was good for the devils until recently
SNEAKINATOR never led them to any real success though. What Horvat has shown so far and his potential moving forward is worth way more than what Schneider gave NJ
37willdog NJ was also a bad team. Not saying Horvat wouldn’t be good for them but Schneider was good when the team wasn’t, it was a good trade for the devils and the canucks
SNEAKINATOR exactly the schneider trade was a bad move, as new jersey wasnt even a serious contender, parise and kovalchuk both left
bjballin at the time it wasn’t a bad move as nobody expected him to fall off as hard as he did
0:44 I thought that rink looked familiar... I play there all the time lmao
Florida Panthers first round pick and Dave Lowry to the San Jose Sharks for Viktor Kozlov. Doesn't seem bad until you realize, San Jose traded that pick to the Tampa Bay Lightning, and that pick became Vincent Lecavalier. A young Vinny Lecavalier and Pavel Bure on the same line?
Correction the LA Kings did not get a couple of years of mediocre goaltending, but rather until Quick came along, they’ve ALWAYS had mediocre goaltending! Except for maybe Hrudey but he really only had the one good season where the Kings went all the way in 93 before losing to Roy and the Canadiens.
John Gibson and Tuka rask are great ones 2
Bruh, @ohnyquist imagine if ur red wings had Andrei Vasilevsky
Derek Meech will always be on the minds of Red Wings fans for a long time.
As it was Meech (16 career points in Detroit) lasted about 2 years until being sent down to GRG
Islanders still haunting oilers to this day
The Eberle for Strome trade also turned out to be hilariously bad for the oilers as well
Barzal, who just scored the game3 winner!!!!!
clebo99 that move was nasty
In the 1970s I believe the draft was still "regional", so regardless of the pick, Guy would have played for the Canadiens either way. Like the CHL when a played is drafted by 1 team only to be traded to his preferred team or he won't report. Or threatening to take other routes (NCAA instead of CHL) so teams will pass them over in the draft so their preferred team can take them.
Another retrospective mistake from the 1991 draft: San Jose had the 2nd pick and instead of taking Niedermeyer they selected...drumroll please...Pat Falloon.
Why is being a Leafs fan so hard!?
Carolina has our pick this year too
Must suck
Great vid bro
Devils trading first round pick to Vancouver for Corey Schneider. Vancouver then drafted Bo Horvat. Trade seemed to be eve at first but with Schneider’s injuries the last couple seasons it seems Vancouver has come up on top.
lol that’s my home rink in the Niedermayer clip
That’s sick !
The Oilers? That’s where first round picks go to die
In hindsight Cory Schneider to the devils for a pick that ended up being Bo Horvat could be an honorable mention here as unfortunately Schneider thanks to a variety of injuries and issues no longer even plays in the nhl while horvat shapes out to be an elite young center.
What about the Leafs trading away Tuukka Rask?
Montreal also tried to buy Denis Potvin in 1973. Imagine what that team would've been like.
Really cool video 😎
LMAO Kyle Quincey was a f***ing pylon. One of the worst moves the Wings made in the past 10 years.
As a Jets fan ours almost backfired last year but we fixed it by fleecing rangers with the Pionk deal
And Barzal wins game 3 for nyi
🥺
Winnipeg Jets acquire Robert Picard from the Montreal Canadiens,in exchange for their 3rd round 51st overall pick in the 1984 entry draft (Patrick Roy)
The Sharks trade early in their franchise history when they traded their first round pick to the Whalers for Sergei Makarov and other draft picks. While that trade did help the Sharks in the short term (Makarov helped the Sharks win the playoff series in the 1st round in '94 and '95), the first round pick that they gave up ended up being future Hall of Famer Chris Pronger. Ugh.
Yeah but don't forget, no one remembers the guy who goes second overall lmao
Just started the vid but i wonder how many of these will be the leafs
Ok so imagine that the oilers keep the first round pick and because it was clear they wanted a defenseman, they take Thomas chabot. Then they don’t need Adam Larson and instead of there current situation they have a core 5 of Draisaitl, nurse, mcdavid, hall, chabot
Nathan Snyder 😦😦
Im happy they traded the pick I'm a sens fan
Keep in mind, the _Bruins_ had *THREE* chances to take Barzal before the Islanders, and took one somebody and two nobodies.
You could have put the kessel, Kapanen trade in here. The leafs got success from kapanen, and he could give them mo-. The pens got kapenen? Poor Toronto
You could've had about *5* different trades from Toronto here 😂
No one mentions Perron for Barzal pick lol
Remember Calgary traded so they could pick Trevor Kidd over Martin Brodeur 😂
Just to troll shoulda mentioned San Jose this season cause the pick traded is 3rd overall and Karlsson or at least the team did not preform as hoped for and now Ottawa has 2 top 5 picks
As nice as a Toronto fan it MIGHT have been to have Seguin and Hamilton to years later flip Kessel for Kappanen and picks and flip those picks for anderson while finishing low enough to aquire the likes of Nylander and Marner makes it not hurt as much
And yes I know we got Matthews because we were terrible at the time but we tanked purposely that year and still had to win the lottery and as much as we still aren't ready for a cup I blame more of that on the gm change and the young Dubas going all in on Tavares and trading Kadri for Barrie and Kerfoot instead of sticking to the "plan"
That trade for kessel I’m glad happened because all those high end draft picks that landed the leafs Morgan Reilly Willy my lander marner and Matthews wouldn’t have happened if they kept seguin and Hamilton
R.I.P Tom Kurvers
Gonna be the Rangers with Tony DeAngelo
A trade for a pick can never backfire. It's just good drafting by the other team. It has got nothing to do with you trading a pick away.
I never knew about the guy lafleur one. That’s horrible😂😬
Agree with all but puzzled on your inclusion of the Kessel trade. If Kessel was a nobody who did nothing in his career then yes it would make this list but he was still a productive player and all star at times so hardly a backfire.
chiarelli fucked the oilers up so hard. Eberle, Hall, Barzal, Puljujarvi, could all be on the Oilers right now... let that sink in
Holland made some of the worst moves as the red wings gm. He did anything in his power to keep the streak going. Even if it meant screwing the team later down the line. He overpaid everyone on the team. In the end he screwed the wings and then left Stevie with a crap roster and barely any way of climbing out of the hole Holland dug
Ken Holland trading 2 2nd rd picks for AA is already looking really bad.
I hope that Zadina does become a good solid forward for the Wings but i still believe that we should have drafted Quinn Hughes that year
Detroit will be able to draft Luke Hughes in next year's draft.
Matt barzal is my fav player outside of edmonton and thomas chabot could have been amazing with Edmonton I'm so mad and if they kept taylor hall oml I'm done
You mean a trade worked out in the islanders favor?
good lord could you imagine mcdavid and barzal on the same line. not that the oilers would have picked him...they dont have a clue if its not as clear cut as picking mcdavid.
Flames traded first round picks with the devils in 1990
Flames draft goaltender Trevor Kidd
Devils draft Martin Brodeur
When More 15 random Facta?
The Erik Karlsson trade will probably be on this list in the future
Vasilveski trade= Oh Nyquist
Cam Neely, great player, terrible in management
Yo nyquist remember me when you hit 1 mil
No question the Seals would have taken Lafleur or Dionne, both great players
Man if the oilers had Barzal jeez
Does anyone know who the Barzal pick originally belonged too? It wasn't originally the Oilers pick. The Oilers used their pick from that year to select McDavid
Was originally the Penguins pick! Oilers got it for David Perron and Klinkhamer
@@OhNyquist Thanks!
And David Perron turned into Carl Hagelin. The Isles get Barzal. The Penguins get a key piece in two cup wins. The Oilers got zippo.
Before I watch, I hope to see the Kurvers Niedermayer trade
The pens had the mat barzal pick before the oilers did, we just traded it away to the oilers for David Perron, then the oilers traded away to the isles for grif Reinhart, I’m still mad the pens traded for Perron, he did nothing good for the pens
Except get traded for Carl Hagelin...which worked out pretty well for the Penguins.
As an Oilers fan.
Pain... 😔
David rundblad to Ottawa for a first which became tarasenko
People knew that Griffin Reinhart trade was bad as soon as it happened
Peter Charelli's life has been a mistake as a whole
That guy lafleur trade. Bruh.
Tarasenko pick for Rundblad
Detroit traded for Terry Sawchuk and Boston drafted Johnny Bucyk
Do a part 2
Ottawa Senators could of had Tarasenko
