Welcome to Rush! I am a new fan myself. 'Tom Sawyer' is probably their most popular song, but they had a large variety in their music for a 40-year career (the drummer and lyricist, Neil Peart, retired from Rush in 2015 and passed away from brain cancer in 2020). The singer, Geddy Lee, is also the bass player (considered one of the best rock bassists) and keyboard player. In their live performances, Geddy will sometimes do all of that at once (and use synth pedals while playing the bass). The guitarist, Alex Lifeson, is the founder of Rush and has been Geddy's best friend since they were both 13-year-old middle school students. Neil joined the band after their first album was released in 1974 (their previous drummer, John Rutsey, left Rush due to health issues and creative differences). Geddy and Alex noticed Neil liked to read, and asked him to write their lyrics, to which he agreed. Neil is widely considered to be one of rock's best percussionists. Rush is known for writing complicated music with a lot of time signature changes. For a future Rush reaction, I suggest the live version of 'Between the Wheels' from the R30 tour in Germany. It's a heavier Rush song that features an awesome guitar solo by Alex LIfeson.

Our minds were blown too when this came out decades ago. This one was my senior year in high school. I was introduced to Rush by a friend from (not kidding!) The Salvation Army band camp. The first song I heard was "Bastille Day" from Caress of Steel in 1975 when I was in high school. I immediately went out and got the first three records and have been a Rush fan from that day to this. So by the time Moving Pictures came out I had a well established love for Rush.
But we had no idea how popular that particular record would become. Permanent Waves had given us the radio-friendly track "The Spirit Of Radio" which got a bit of airplay on mainstream rock radio when it came out so we knew that Rush was more popular than the music press (Rolling Stone magazine in particular) would have lead one to believe. Then Moving Pictures dropped and Rush were THE band to see that year.
We usually went up tp B.C. to see them, then we'd typically go to the Seattle and Portland shows. 1981 was a banner year for Rush in the Pacific North West (Wet?) as Rush sold out the 18,000 seat Coliseum (later dubbed Key Arena and now known as Climate Pledge Arena*) for 2 nights straight. My best friends and I rode our motorcycles to Vancouver, B.C., Spokane, Wa and the Portland, Or shows and every one was in the largest indoor venue in the city. That was an amazing summer as we had just graduated university and would soon be engrossed in our careers and life would not afford us the opportunity to be so liberal with our time and our money.
I first saw Rush live in 1976 when they were actually an opening act for STYX in Spokane, WA then I happen to be in Toronto in June of tat year and got to see them headline at Massy Hall for one of the shows that beame the All The World's A Stage album. I was in both cities for Salvation Army youth events and in both cases had the Saturday evening free of scheduled activities, meetings, etc. My friend from band camp was also there (he's a retired Salvation Army Officer, of all things) and we went to see Rush. I was very fortunate see at least one show on every tour thereafter until the end. I found a woman who liked Rush and I married her. We took the kids to their first Rush shows and introduced them to classic and prog-rock from the cradle. When we talk about "the Rush family" we really mean family. So you are now a part of the the Rush family, welcome!
*"Climate Pledge" is a stupid name for the building. It sounds like an eco-friendly wood furniture polish.

Welcome to RUSH! RUSH is the 0G. Dream Theater, Tool, Opeth, etc. are bands that RUSH inspired. Just be aware that RUASH went through many phases or periods during their 40+ year career. They started out more as a hard rock group like Led Zeppelin, and gradually were influenced by many bands and styles along the way, including the band The Police. So their sound became much more synth based. A good example of the blend of the original hard rock and the growing synthesizers is the song Xanadu.

And due to your appreciation for things that rock at a high level, Rush once had an opening act called The Steve Morse Band that got standing ovations from Rush's audience on arena dates. If you want life changing RUSH try the whole side 1 of 2112 and add the band "YES" to your future reactions list. RUSH looked up to them for their progressive music. #Roundabout #StarshipTrooper and sorry long message but Black Sabbath is often overlooked and stereotyped until people hear Ozzy / Bill Ward (Drum god) Geezer and Tony Iommi's hard riffs. They also provide many transitions that are way to good.

Rush are musical masters with other worldly minds...Tom Sawyer is one of their best songs but they have prob 20 you'd love. Top shelf music with highly talented professional musicians who love what they do and love each other like brothers...they were all best friends that grew up together. Neil died of brain cancer in 2020...I cried for an hour. That's how much Rush means to my life.

I remember playing Space Invaders at Subway as the tables had the games inside them. You could sit and eat and play while listening to this song on the loud ass juke box. Better times , Better times.

Love this one from Rush - one of my favorites! A word of advice: Never, ever, interrupt a solo or group playing instruments in the middle part of a song without vocals. You need to listen to that break down again for yourself and listen all the way through because it's epic - maximum impact if you don't stop the video. Looking forward to following you on your journey! .

If you ask any famous drummer today who were their biggest influences. I'll bet 8 out of 10 drummers would say John Bohnam (Led Zeppelin - RIP), and our man here, Neil Peart of Rush. Neil was such a force of nature that he would have his drum techs set up his kit in different configurations at each concert to try and throw him off. They never could, he was just too good! RIP Neil Peart
