  • Pitting more expensive boutique-style pedals against their cheaper cousins.
    Zvex Vexter Box of Rock ($219.00)*
    vs
    Dr J Lancelot Distortion & Boost ($99)*
    So which is better? Is the Zvex worth the extra $130 for better quality switches and more headroom on the Boost?
    I don't know.
    The surprise was how much the Lancelot sounds like the more expensive pedal. It's really very close. The toggles - CLIP and BOOST/DIST order - are kind of unnecessary, especially as the Boost doesn't really seem to drive the Distortion circuit any hotter.
    The Box of Rock is a classic pedal with an amazing, much-loved sound. And its build quality isn't going to let you down in the middle of a gig in 3 years time. But if you want to try it out, I'd recommend getting the Lancelot, and saving yourself a lot of money.
    Gear:
    Fender Classic Player Jazzmaster (bridge pickup)
    Ammoon Stereo Looper
    Boss Katana 50w amp
    mic'd with a Sennheiser e609
    into a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2
    Recorded in GarageBand, edited in Final Cut Pro X

      Perhaps do the comparisons using a tube amp. Noticed you use a Katana which is not a bad amp but I think some pedals react different and perhaps are able to "shine" more into a tube amp.

    WOW, this is well put together! That bit where they sounded dead identical for a minute really highlighted how one of the only real big differences between these two is the way the knobs are set. Once you get them in-sync, they're extremely similar!

      I have the Green Crystal.
      It's not a Tubescreamer. Higher gain, almost like an OCD only cheaper and less problematic.

      Happy to be able to introduce you to them! I've got another video waiting to be edited of the green version of this pedal, a Tube Screamer with a boost, up against a TS808 Deluxe

    • @latontolog

      Cool, looking forward to it! Googling around a bit, it seems like Dr J is a subsidiary of Joyo. Do you happen to know which pedals any of the others in this line are clones of? (In addition to the Box of Rock and the TS808 Deluxe, I mean).

      I know - I'm very slow... So many videos stacked up waiting to be edited. By the time I get round to doing them, there's a good chance some of the pedals will have newer versions out!

    Getting distortion right is apparently a lot harder than overdrive. The Lancelot is a great pedal and does a solid job. Got mine for $49. For the price, way cool.

    Hey, nice videos ! What do you think about the differents types of loopers that you use? Is there a difference in the sound, or its just a difference in the number of banks, time of recording and etc?

    • @ThePedalBored
      @ThePedalBored  5 років тому +2

      The two loopers I've used - the EHX 720 and the Ammoon Stereo Looper - are, for all intents and purposes, identical. The quality of the components is a better in the EHX - footswitches and so on - and they control layout is slightly more intuitive perhaps, but otherwise there's not much between them. I suspect the AtoD conversion might be better in the EHX, but that's just an assumption based on price. One interesting thing I like about the Ammoon that the EHX doesn't do is if you change to a different loop it carries on playing the new one automatically. I don't know how useful it is, but it's fun.

  • @Lalairu
    @Lalairu 5 років тому +1

    Are you happy with the Ammoon looper? Is it worth it?

    • @ThePedalBored
      @ThePedalBored  5 років тому

      It was a temporary replacement for the EHX 720, which it is definitely a clone of. I prefer the 720 but other than better quality switches and a slightly more useful design there's not a great deal of difference.

    When future generations study the strange period of history known as "UA-cam guitar pedal demonstrations" there will be an entire course and several peer-reviewed journals (or whatever the future Cyborgs have as their gold standard) dedicated to the magic and mystery of this channel.
    Those books in your uploads are really going to confuse them.
