    I have to come back to this video about once a year. Back then, all my buddies thought I was stupid for spending a months pay on a Punch 75. I remember them going through so many sets of RCA cables and power wire, new ground wires trying to get these pyramid amps to put out like the Punch 75 was doing.

I've had it about 14 years. It's stable to 1.3 ohms at 14.4 and has done actually pretty good. I had it hooked to four 18 inch Eminence Audio subs in my wagon 14 years ago wired to 1 ohm. It never blew a fuse and I hit 140db at a sound contest so, heck, I'm pumping two dual 2 ohm SKAR 10's with it now in my truck. It is what it is. It's still throwing the bass.

      To be fair, Pyramid stuff was always priced fairly for what you got. Back in the day we had a salvage electronics shop (sold used wire and such) that was also a Pyramid dealer and you could get a pair of 12s for like $19.99. I'd be surprised if that amp was more than $40 when it was new. Pyramid was one of those companies that was super famous for having an MSRP that was like 10x higher than what the stuff was actually priced at... Sorta like Harbor Freight. The stuff was always "on sale" at like "90% off".

    It's impressive how they could consume 270 watts of power to feed out 70! Guess you got a bonus, a 200 watt space heater to go with your tunes!
    But, when you payed 20 dollars for a 300 watt amp at London Drugs (Not this amp specifically, but a Pyramid) you couldn't seriously expect 300 watts. It was peak ratings which for them meant the moment the casing melted off the internal wiring XD
    Still, if you realized this and were cleaver in your application, you could get some reasonable results. Never needed to worry about anyone stealing your junk and still had clean music you could hear on the highway with the windows down. I never locked the doors on my car, so I never had a broken window!

He had 2 of these Pyramid P.O.S.(Piece Of Shit) amps and 4x 10in GS "Redline" subwoofers...each Sub at lease 500w for decent running power required and an Alpine deck I forgot the model no#.anyways, this customer was from the east coast Mainland we hooked it all up and OF COURSE it sounded like an Am radio from the 50s..lmao. We were all baffled..So we tried different polarity dropping the impedance and it got WORSE!. So one of our Techs took the Amp out of the car to check its guts.....and Walla....The same circuit board shown in this video but with a twist....the Car Stereo dealer that sold him the Amps put weights..yes, "Weights"!!! In the Amp to give it a nice heaviness to it. So it must be good because its freaking heavy right..lol. $Cost$ per Amp $300.00ea. $1 per watt....Man that customer was PISSED..He spend $600.00 on the Amps and $150.00 on our install charge. He literally had a Gun in his glove box and took it out and told us he was going to drive to the other Stereo dealership and Shoot the salesman that sold him the Amps....Sorry, I had to share my story to you...fun memories back in the days..I like your channel keep it up Brother. 🖒🖒...oh P.S. even when I knew NOTHING about car audio at 15 I clearly realized that Pyramid was the cheapest made and would never buy. Although my first setup was putting (wedging) a box with 4 15" subs and 4 horn tweets in the back seat of my 84 t-bird. The amp was fried after a couple months and the sound had no bass even with the super generic 15's.

    The old school no-name amps were silly bad compared to today. If you think Power Acoustik is bad now, you should have seen what they were putting out in the 90's.

    • @TheBrokenLife
      @TheBrokenLife 8 років тому

      Depends on what you bought and what you expected. I had a '200w" Power Acoustik (PA2-200? 50x2@4, 100x1@4, 200x1@2) amp on a set of 6.5s and it did the job more than fine. Even the crossover functions on it worked well. I sold it and a Blaupunkt 10" (just a cheap Best Buy sub) to a friend and he was happy with it too. For $79 new, back in 1996, it was a completely decent amp. I also had a buddy that was running whatever the "big" Power Acoustic was (which was like $250-300... and that was back when a PPI A600 was $600 and a Punch 200 was $450) on a pair of Kicker 10s and it seemed to have plenty of power to spare. If he would have told me it was a Punch, PPI, MTX, etc amp I would have believed him. He was super happy with it.
      Since then I've been all over the map on gear and have some fairly expensive stuff from premium brands and I would still say my Power Acoustik was probably the best value I ever got out of an amp that I bought new.

    • @normalicy
      @normalicy 8 років тому

      Our shop sold Power Acoustik. Believe me, their amps were very far under their rated power. Even if you took price into consideration. Boss amps at the time were nearly 2x the power output for the same price. That said, I've always appreciated their speakers.

  • @303nitzubishi4
    @303nitzubishi4 7 років тому

    LMAO Man I got an old amp like that laying around still. I'll have to dig it out cuz I can't remember the brand name but it has a full size chassis like that one, a full size PCB, and then has a tiny IC like you'd see in a head unit! It is a two channel amp and there are spots on the PCB where a second IC would go for the four channel model. Labeled as 600 watts I bet it wouldn't even do a tenth of that! GREAT VID AS USUAL

Those bastards could handle good power, they were well made (used good quality coils and non-pressed paper cones), and had a ton of Xmax.

    PYRAMID.... of all the companies that took a dive it was surely TENNA....... TENNA/PYRAMID. The ORIGINAL MINDBLOWER SYSTEM was created by TENNA for the public in 1976?.... MINDBLOWERS.... Amplified 6x9 speaker set with remote operation... even had an optional EQ you could add to the system. Some of the earliest memories in the late 70's was my 70 Challenger with them MINDBLOWERS in back. When I bought that car them speakers were already in there BUT there was WIRES hanging from them so I decided to hook it all up and WOW what a DIFFERENCE.... MINDBLOWERS were quite possibly the best sounding 6x9 speaker system out there at the time.... Of course there was AUDIOMOBILE and ZAPCO.... BUT BANG for the BUCK surely went to the TENNA MINDBLOWERS. TENNA.... eventually became PYRAMID. TENNA was a ANTENNA company that primarily made HAM RADIO gear..... Gotta hand it to them for seeing the NEW WAVE of car audio possibilities and running with it., SADLY It seems PYRAMID became a MARGIN based operation and that "AMP" there tells THAT story LOUD and CLEAR. THUS..... Pyramid will go down in history as "being there"..... and then forgetting why..... I wonder if they are still in business.... MEMORIES....
