Man that was me all the time in sears as well. We had Kmart and I used to always blast Bass Boy, DJ Magic Mike and Dynamic II in their car stereos. Got kicked put of both a few times lol
92, I was a sophomore in High School and graduated in 94... Had systems in both my cars.. They were of the Rockford Fosgate flavor. Today I am 46 years old and my youngest son graduated high school... and.... you guesses it... Dad has another old school Rockford Fosgate system in his 2012 Sierra. Yes, some things we love never die. Thank you for all you do. I follow you and you 100% helped me make my decision in the purchases of my "new to me" old school 90's Rockford Fosgate amplifiers
My first amp was a 2 channel Jensen. Driving 2 Jensen 6×9s.. Sounded good 2 me at the time. The one I had was older than this but similar. No problems.
Nice to see this. The Jensen's were a great deal for the money. I sold audio at Sears back in the early/mid 90s and they were $199. I *never* saw a Jensen amp returned, they were solid amps. Thanks Big D! Side note - My Soundsteam Ref 500 burned out, I didn't have much money and needed something cheap until I could afford the new Phoenix Gold ZX. Well, we got these Audiovox Rampage amps in at Sears. Model AMP-591, rated 100x2 rms and 200x1 rms. Two channel was 2-8 ohms, mono was 4-8. Power rating didn't say at what ohm 🤷♂️ . Anyways, my setup was 2 ohm, hooked it up mono @ 2ohm and to my surprise it lasted an entire month before I replaced it. Didn't burn up. I'd love to see one of these on the dyno, if a working one can be found. Paid somewhere between $50-100, I don't remember. But it was built like a tank and bumped.
It's crazy to think what this stuff cost considering what wages were back then. I made $4.50 an hour in 96 and I was completely immersed in car audio. We actually had to save up to buy this stuff.
Minimum wage was $3.85 when I started working. Luckily, it went to $4.25/hr a few months later, so I was a reeyotch beeyotch with that $0.40 raise! lol. Had the Sparkomatic tape deck, a Roadmaster 5 band eq that brought out the ultra frequencies of the road noise in my super-wired sound system, a Pyramid 300 amp and a pair of Pyle 18's laying in my back floorboard. No. I didn't have a crossover, so those 18's were full range speakers. lmao.
I installed one of these and remember it kicked ass!! Jensen was an old old old school badass!!! Heavy and clean sounding... They even sold these in car parts stores!!!
Lord, I remember running these, and other Jensen amplifiers during these time periods. They were a great alternative for all us guys, that couldn't afford PPI and Rockford and the likes. Always had great results using the Jensen products. And were built like tanks. Awesome video!!
Yes turns out this is true! I never owned them as I saved up for the nicer gear but I was happy to see this as well! It’s actually harder to find the budget stuff in mint condition than the more expensive gear!
I remember selling this back in the early 90's at Circuit City. Hated selling it when we had Kenwood KAC744/Coustic AMP460/Alpine/MTX Terminator. Best of all being commission based you were paid less than a dollar to sell it. Fun to see it again. Brought back some fun memories. It did test better than I thought it would.
Man I installed a ton of those things back in the day... As long as you kept expectations and gains set correctly they were fairly reliable amps, more than adequate.
I purchased one of these new as a Birthday gift for my Sister in law. Installed it and paired it up to 2 12" Pyle's and it sound great and performed reliably.
I use to have this exact amp and it was great! I almost got nervous @9:15 mark when I thought that I saw smoke for a second. LOL! Great review as always.
I had the 2 channel version on this amp in my first car back in 1996. No matter what I did, it had bad alternator whine. Replaced it with a Kenwood PS series and had ZERO noise. Other than the noise/whine it was a pretty decent amp. Sold it to a a buddy for like $50 if I remember correctly, and he had ZERO noise issues in his vehicle with it. 🤷♂️
I had the same & mine did the same whine. 3 different vehicles, didn't matter, still whined. I got rid of the whine with 1 of those transformer-type power filters they used to sell. Sounded perfect after but never could figure out the cause. Amp was still playing after 20 years hard use & finally let it go with the last truck it was in.
I had the 2 channel version as my first ever amplifier.. boy that brings back some memories. Had it running to Orion Cobalt 10" in a 86 Ranger regular cab. Great nostalgic video, thanks!

That took me almost 2 years to save that money and source all that equipment. Now I have to either down grade to xtr or wait another 2 years or so. It seems that I will never get these cars into beast mode
I had a Jensen 50x2 from mid '90s. Had screw terminals for all the connections, it was silver. I ran to 4 ohm 12" Cerwin Vegas wired in parallel to that amp bridge mono. Never died and it hit hard.
I ran through a audiocontrol crossover and it made such a big difference. I knew nothing about car audio when I bought this. Started working at local audio shop and added audiocontrol and two JL AUDIO subwoofers to replace my mtx's. It actually sounded great at the time. Then we started selling la sound amplifiers and I took out Jensen and added two Hermosa 150's.
I bought one of those Jensens and one of those Alpine 3554s he mentioned early in the video back in the early 90s and the Alpine is still going strong.
I still have my Jenson amp in my van. I had a later model than yours where the speaker connections are screw type and theres a switch to select a filter with the jenson name glows red. Good review
I remember drooling over the G.R.I.P me series woofers by Jensen with the hand print on them. I liked going to Sears and playing with the woofers in the audio section. My good old days
So glad to see this!! A LOT of guys cut their teeth (and fingers) in car stereo with this amp. As you can see from the dyno results, a very solid amp for the money (you actually get what you pay for), and you could get them cheap at Walmart. These things were tough as hell and I've seen them survive horrific abuse but still deliver decent sound and power. I hate that there's not a way to test "real world" sound with a true Class A or A/B amp like this vs the class D stuff today! This video made me subscribe!!
Use to bump the smaller amp with a pioneer free air both from Wal-Mart..made a single cab ford rock the block.. Back in the early 90's as a kid.. It's what got my attention to all car audio systems and more.. Thanks for bringing back old memories
My favorite Jensen amp that I hope you could get your hands on, and test would be the Jensen Xa-4150. It's the 600 watt 4 channel amp. The blue and chrome amp with the sliding clear dial cover, with the Jensen logo that turns on green when powered up. Classic. Used to push 2 kicker Competition 15s solid and clean with it.
I love these blue coated models, they looked amazing back in the day under those blue neon lights. I did four of the in my 79 Cougar with a pair dedicated on highs and a pair bridged on 4 SPP124 Ouch 124'z which were rated at 200 watts rms each.😁....I wanted a all Fosgate set up but these Jenson amps were way cheaper than the power 300's of the day. Although not as strong, they did their job well and look great doing so...but those Power 300's would had been amazing for my set up back then.
My very first amp was a Jensen A222HX. I had it running two 12” Pyramid Phase III woofers in a two-way (piezo tweeters) hatchback box. I bought the amp from the BX on Dover AFB way back in the day….so many memories!!!
Nice, I had bought 2 of these for my girlfriend car back in the 90’s to run mids/highs and the two 12” subs and it never failed. It actually sounded decent for the price.
Are used to have that amp around 1993. It was pushing a MTX Road Thunder Pro 15 inch speaker in a box that I built using specifications from a RadioShack book . The science of speaker boxes. From what I remember, it would make your eyeballs vibrate in the car. My friend claimed it hit 116- 120 decibel with his meter at the window but, I don't think it was all that! It's a fairly cheap amp with fairly good performance.
I use to have that Jensen amp in Grey! I got it back in 1997 for just over 200$ in walmart! I bought it with the cross over and a kraco irredeciant color radio. I got blue. Also 2 pioneer 12" IMPP FREE AIR! I loved it!
I just bought the 2 channel version of this A222HX brand new on E-Bay. I had a silver version exactly the same in 1993. This amp combined with a 3 way crossover handled my mids very well. It did not do so well as a sub amp amp. Really brings me back. I remember guys hooking up 3 pairs of speakers to these and then wondering why it failed 6 months later.
I picked up one of these for $30 in near mint condition at a pawn shop. Surprisingly good sound quality. Powered a pair of 3" fullrange drivers and a 10" sub in my bros. El Camino. He was happy as a clam.
Wow blast from the past! I ran the 2-channel version of this from high school on for about 20 years (!!!) It got moved into 3 different vehicles & pushed a set of MTX 10s or Kenwood 6x9s depending on the car. Beat the snot out of that thing & it never whimpered or shut down once. Yes it was budget but I feel like I definitely got my money's worth. Only thing to complain about was it had to have one of those "transformer" filters they used to sell on the power wires or it would do the alternator whine thing. '87 Cougar, '92 Escort LXE or '86 B2000, didn't matter it would whine with any of them. But otherwise a great cheap amp! Great test Big D 👍🍻
A friend of mine the early 2000s had 1000 watts of Jensen Amps running his system. I pulled up with 450 watts of rf I had 2 punch 125s and a punch 200 and he was amazed by how much louder and cleaner my system sounded. For the hell of it I pulled my amps out and let him try them out he was so amazed. The next time I saw him about a week later he had all rf amps 2 punch 250s I think 4 channel and a punch 200 for the subs sounded so good.
I used to have this exact amp, let a friend borrow it, and it was stolen out of his car while it was in a repair shop getting worked on. miss that thing, was a fun little amp back in the day.
I remember the early to mid 90's Jensen amps being pretty decent for the money, even if they loved to plaster the MAX power ratings everywhere. I still have a Jensen XA 3022LX amp that I bought in 1997. Used it for almost 20 years powering a 12 inch MTX sub in a sealed box. It never disappointed me. I have a friend who worked for Jensen for a couple of years in the mid 90's and he said they were a pretty decent company. He was involved in designing and testing mostly speaker prototypes during his tenure there. He majored in electrical engineering so that job was a pretty good fit for him straight out of college.
Can’t remember what amps I had back in the day, but after going out drinking with some buddies, the next day I went out and bought an Alpine 7903 CD player. I didn’t even own a cd, lol. I know it wasn’t long after that I bought an Alpine 3554. They were my first introduction into Alpine and that’s all, electronics wise, I’ve been using ever since. Can only imagine the number of Alpine head units, amps, eq’s, etc. I’ve owned. Currently working on the amp rack to hold 13 Alpine amplifiers to go into my ‘04 f150. Just a tick over 10,000 watts. Can’t wait to get it finished. Should sound pretty good. I hope, lol.
My father had this amp in his truck back when i was a kid in the early 90s. 8" bazookas and a pioneer premier super tuner.. sounded pretty good for what it was..
I have one of those Sherwood XAT-400Q's that are shown in the magazine in my garage that still seems to work, but its missing a couple screws for the speaker outputs.
Nice, I had a very similar Amp back in my VW which ran awesome, my 2 3 and half inch Blaupunkt dash speakers and my 5 and a half Alpine door speakers, ahh those were the days.....
A friend had that amp running to a blue thunder 10 in a 5 gallon bucket with the surround pretty much replaced with silicone over time. All in the back seat of his land shark Pontiac Catalina car. It freaking rocked surprisingly! 😅
I had this amp back in like 1994-1996 but it was silver in color. It was the same amp just different color. I ran it in 2 channel running 2 10" Crunch subs. Back in the day it was what was available locally and it worked.
People used to talk trash about these amps, maybe now they’ll learn. Back in 1995 I had two of those plus four of the older 600 watt 2 channel’s. I ran eight 1st gen XTR 12’s with them in an ‘88 Civic.
I had that amp on 2 kicker 12s and it bumped great in 1998 also had it hooked up to the Jensen bandpass box and that bumped really good in a little Honda crx
I have and have had many of that line and the next silver line of Jensen amps. They have always been pretty solid amps in my opinion. First car had a pair of Kicker Comp 12s running off a Target special of the silver version like 100x2 amp.

Then we started selling la sound amplifiers and I took out Jensen and added two Hermosa 150's.
I bought one of those Jensens and one of those Alpine 3554s he mentioned early in the video back in the early 90s and the Alpine is still going strong.
Oh boy, this brings back good memories. I even designed a class B amp for school project back in those days.
I always wanted this amplifier man this takes me back !!
Had a two channel version of one of these years ago. Can't remember the power but it never ever missed a beat
Use to bump the smaller amp with a pioneer free air both from Wal-Mart..made a single cab ford rock the block.. Back in the early 90's as a kid.. It's what got my attention to all car audio systems and more.. Thanks for bringing back old memories
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Oh man that brings back memories I had 2 of these one was the BBE model, good power on the cheap...
YES! The BBE model was the second one i had, mids and highs were incredible!
I love these blue coated models, they looked amazing back in the day under those blue neon lights.
I did four of the in my 79 Cougar with a pair dedicated on highs and a pair bridged on 4
SPP124 Ouch 124'z which were rated at 200 watts rms each.😁....I wanted a all Fosgate set up but these Jenson amps were way cheaper than the power 300's of the day.
Wow what a find! Super cool to see one of these in original box!!
Yessir!
Nice, I had bought 2 of these for my girlfriend car back in the 90’s to run mids/highs and the two 12” subs and it never failed. It actually sounded decent for the price.
Back in 97 I had a 5 channel Jensen. That amp was really good!
I've had one of those Ka5's sitting forever, it's too damn big to fit anywhere.
Beautiful budget old school amp. I love it. Keep em coming👍🏼👍🏼
Never gave Jensen was credited but but this one definitely get some respect and it is actually quite beautiful
👌😬👍
Just looking at the quality of the assembly, that thing is awesome.
I picked up one of these for $30 in near mint condition at a pawn shop. Surprisingly good sound quality. Powered a pair of 3" fullrange drivers and a 10" sub in my bros. El Camino. He was happy as a clam.
Sweet 👌
Nice to see it did so well. I wasn't expecting that much power.
Had one of these bridged to two Pioneer IMPP 12s in a big sealed box. It slammed hard for such a small amount of power and it really slammed the lows.
OMG that was my very first power amp! Great great memories.
Yes! I had two of these in a sweet little project system back in middle school!
Did more than what I expected wow
You and me bof
Last old school Jensen you did was horrible
A friend had that amp running to a blue thunder 10 in a 5 gallon bucket with the surround pretty much replaced with silicone over time. All in the back seat of his land shark Pontiac Catalina car. It freaking rocked surprisingly! 😅
Had a couple of Jensen amps back in the day. Totally had that one. Great bang for the $ for sure! Also had white colored ones as well!
I had that amp! Loved it!
Yeah boi!!!! I even rocked one of them back in the day! I think my brother in law still has it actually!
Gorgeous Jensen!
I had a Jensen 10 inch sub in a bazooka tube and an Alpine 80 watt amp in 1993. And that Jenson was surprisingly loud.
I have and have had many of that line and the next silver line of Jensen amps. They have always been pretty solid amps in my opinion. First car had a pair of Kicker Comp 12s running off a Target special of the silver version like 100x2 amp.
Test and demo the jp95, that Amp looks awesome!. I enjoyed the podcast with jp too.
Had this amp
Thanks big D
I remember those! My friends had them. Thanks for the Old Skool info 👏🏼
I remember I had a four channel that same color in 1996,with bbe sound enhancifiers,oh my Lord it sounded good!!!!
Man would love to have that. Remember these. I even had an audiovox at 1 time with craco 6.5 door speakers
I have always loved Jensen amps never had a bad amp from them.
Nice old skool that amp is 1 year older than my 93 Suburban🔊🔊
Awesome man been waiting for this one!
Hahaha I'm still rocking that Alpine 3554 to this day and that thing blasts.
