I am a 17yr old, and on my way to my college, I see a gentleman driving a nitrous blue MK2 Ford Focus RS and the harmonious symphony from that 2.5 5 cylinder is just insane. Every morning, I leave my house at certain time everyday, just so I don't miss it and it brings a huge grin on my face every time. I am personally not a huge hot hatchs, and I mainly prefer the mighty V8's like the M156s and the F136's, but this car has a special place in my heart. Unfortunately, by how the automobile industry is evolving, and the government placing more and more stricter restrictions, I may never be able to own and enjoy the raw symphony of combustion engines.
I don't care how rapid and blisteringly fast a tesla or any electric car is from 0-60, but I care more about how a car sounds and feels. Words can't describe the sensations experienced by a truly spectacular piece of machine. Just listen to the sound of a Lexus LFA or a CGT and tell me if any modern cars comes even close to having a spine-tingling exhaust note as these legends.
I remember back in my college days 10 years back 😬 there was a guy who had a matte black focus ST. Made me wonder how he got thar and insurance at that age. Hopefully saving up for a porsche cayman to replace my city car vw up.
As you said also I'm worried with how things are going with car ownership. Just recently we had a consultation here in North London to putting traffic calming measures which just isn't needed
Best thing about the ST. Everyone likes different cars and brands but sure all would want want a asbo orange ST.
I prefer VAG group cars but them focus are iconic like R32 mk4s

I don't dislike most of these, but they're generally the sort of cars that are so focused on 0-60 and not fun - any Golf R or A45 driver in particularly who says they don't want to go EV, I find it very hard to take them seriously...although I can't argue with them waiting for a better EV - a Model 3 could be that, if they at least had an optional extra of any sort of passable interior 😄
That said, I do like the RS4, Evo and Panamera, for different reasons, those cars have real character.
I've realised over the years that I don't have a RWD/FWD/AWD preference particularly. It's just about if everything is nicely balanced so you can make use of the drivetrain. AWD is the hardest to get right though, even the best ones are generally more impressive than they are engaging. The novelty of using the throttle to ruin your shopping gets old pretty quick though! Admittedly, I've lost food to all 3 drivetrains at least once...in AWD and RWD to hybrid response and in FWD to turbo boost 😁

Carbon build up on the Golf is not an issue in the UK since we have dual injection.
Rs head gasket was only an issue on the first model year. It wasn't a design flaw, it was an issue with using the eco-boost mustang gasket, by mistake. which has different coolant passages. I test drove a rs and if it was stock, holy sh** it's quick.
Interesting choice between the 435d, and the CLA 45. I’m in my 50’s now, so I’m guessing I’m not your target audience, but both are great choices if serviced regular.

how about the 2015 audi s6 (C7.5) 4.0 v8 450 bhp twin turbo quattro. great car with great performance and available for under £20k.
Definitely considering the 435d as next car but the gran coupe version as need 4 doors plus hatchback.
it feels slow and boring af to drive, too refined hence the sense of speed is non-existent.

I must say, i think my car might be one of the best on this list. I bought it for £20k, 40k miles completely stock. 400bhp awd evo x. Before doing anything to it i clocked 3.7s 0-60. Intake tune and an exhaust im looking at just under 470 horsepower.
What about track day cars. Under 5k or under 10k and so on…. 👍
Audi s4/s5 v6 is the biggest bargin for me. They start from around 7k.
My 2017 A45 is pretty much all I’ll ever need. Ridiculously quick, comfortable, pan roof, good in the snow, and still looks lovely. Nice list there. Still love the Focus RS and it’s just such shame we have all been fooled by this climate emergency. So there will be no more ICE cars like this. Unless there’s a sensible, 180 degree shift done. Now that would be amazing

People hate Tesla for all the wrong reasons. Steer clear of ANY of the American built ones and you'll actually get a (genuinely) great car for the money. So basically March 2021 onwards.

Right, the mk3 focus rs & ecoboost mustang aren't the same engine. The reason the focus was recalled for headgaskets was because they put the mustang headgaskets into the early model of the rs when they are completely different
Golf R too chavy imho. All the lads on the estate have them having ram raided halfords. Rare to find one stock nowadays. CLA amg or rs4 would be my choice, classier. Tesla no1 u mental? A plastic jelly mould with no soul

£10k plus maybe 2K for the big jobs taken care of for piece of mind. All for proper real world usability and 3- 400hp. Pretty cheap if you ask me! any car with that power is a 'money pit' if you actually take care of them.
Tesla shouldn’t be in the list it’s the worst built all electric car that’s quick but very cheaply made. All the other cars listed are refined versions of their own models giving them character.
A Model 3 has more character than a Golf R.
I'm not saying that a tendency to randomly break is a good character, especially if Tesla parts/servicing are still 10x worse than any other brand - last I heard, a rear windscreen had a 2 year waiting list...Autoglass guy told me that as he apologised for my Porsche taking 2 weeks, which was apparently the only other brand that wasn't next day at the time!
Nonetheless, it is a sort of character 😄 Golf R, honestly...I never understood it. The Golf is probably the least flawed car in its class, but "there's nothing really wrong with it" is pretty much the exact description I would use to define lack of character. It's a 0-30 party trick that people use to get to a pub quickly so they can loudly brag about it, while not caring if they drink and can't drive home because the bus is more exciting. I've probably overdone the point a little there, but you get the idea 🤣 I feel like I haven't said anything inaccurate though...
The top car on the list is also the worst. The battery packs can become dangerous within the first year. At best they will last 10 years then need a completely new battery pack at £40,000. Well that is in an ideal situation as the fast chargers can cause thermal runaway in Lithium Ion batteries which will result in your expensive Tesla becoming a puddle of plastic. Petrol/Diesel needs to go but EV's are not the replacement it should be Toyota's Amonia based system or the hydrogen system invented in the late 1980s both of these are genuinely low emmisions unlike EV's which are hidden emmisions. Scientists state "For a EV to be noticably lower emissions than a ICE car at least 70 percent renewable energy must be used to power them. The UK the highest in the world currently in renewable energy has a 50 percent renewable on a good day.

@@danpaul4975 Next you will try telling me that Lithium Ion batteries cannot enter thermal runaway when charging or if their amp limit is exceeded. If you do then you are insane, Vapers know this for a fact which is why Battery safety including a knowledge of ohms law is required to safely use mechanical ((unregulated)) vape devices. It is also true if the battery cell gets ruptured a single peice of metal invading it can and often does cause individual batteries within the cell to explode causing a chemical fire. It is for this reason 12 of the big UK insurance companies will not take on new EV policies. Alongside this they are increasing the cost of policies by upto 100 percent when renewing an existing policy.
