I personally liked selena's performance Same thing with emily blunt in oppenheimmer, I do agree jacques could've had written her character a little better But she's such a scene stealer
Finally someone who seems to have seen the same thing as me, all this praise for the movie has been crazy to me after watching it, it was just okay to me and Selena wasn't that great imo. I agree Zoe and Karla were the highlight
About "trying to escape your past part" i's not a film about an ordinary trans woman It's a film about an extraordinary one, that happened to commit a lot of mistakes involving other people She learns to make peace with it, and is looking for redemption
I'm latina and trans, when i saw the reception of the movie at cannes, i got so excited When i travelled to paris last month i had the opportunity to watch it on theater, it didn't move me the way i expected it and i had some issues with it I have the same issue with Sean Baker's Tangerine And you know, cis men directors will never get trans people stories right But i think my main concern was that i didn't feel represented, i think many trans people would like to be represented right and our struggles And that is valid, but i realized it should not be mandatory for every movie, although many trans people would demand it and will complain about it when the movie is released in their countries I think the movie and Karla Sofía specifically made a good job trying to humanize a character that made a lot of mistakes, also her being trans doesn't seem like a big deal in the movie, she's treated like a regular woman after her transition (the dream of many) it's a story completely different that mine, and that's good
I’m not a hater at all, but I’ve always found Selena an overrated actress, even though she’s never been massively acclaimed. I always found it baffling that people thought she was snubbed for Only Murders - she’s really quite stiff in it.
