I’m an RN and have been dx with sciatica that keeps me from sleeping and being able to walk normally. I was recommended for the epidural nerve block but after much research decided against that mode of treatment. Some of the possible side effects are not only serious but have caused death in some patients. I think people really should weigh the risk/benefit and look at other alternatives. A few yrs ago these meds used were not FDA approved and I hear the doctors are making so much money from these epidurals that it’s like an assembly line of patients! Please do your research!

I was going like a sheep to get a epidural for my back pain . But I day before u decide to visit a friend who is always sick and mentioned I will get cortisone in my back ... she said ...STOP.. don’t do it ! Look at me 20 years after those injection... my bones and cartilage are destroyed and I need a new jaw due to those shot I had many years ago . She got those injection 3 times in a year often because she didn’t know better ! Now she only gets help from acupuncture! But her body is damaged already . There is nothing she can do . She visited a lot of orthopedic and they agreed she has too many epidural steroid

My life comfort is impaired due to the pain in my right leg? My pain was unbearably high. My son, a doctor, took me to the neurosurgeon. They treated me with cortisone injection into my waist. Eighty percent of my pain subsided immediately after the application. Within a month, the remaining twenty percent of my pain subsided. Now I'm very good.

I lost my mother . Dealing with Guilt?
My mother had severe back and leg pain that she was unable to bear and her daily life was badly affected because she was unable to move . Pain was so severe that she has to take frequently pain killer meds with heavy dosage .
After checking with many neurosurgeons , we decided to proceed with one. Most of the Neurosurgeons were advising Spinal Surgery because as per MRI report she has Degenerated disc disease and her nerves at L4 S5 was compressed .
Apart from local neurosurgeons , we had also taken advise from international neurosurgeons to go for better decision.
So finally after collecting all suggestions we proceeded with the procedure.
We were asked by neurosurgeon to get test of HbA1c for my mother diabetes. Test was performed and result was 10.1
He informed that my mother diabetes was poorly controlled and its quite risky to proceed for her surgery immediately . Since she had severe pain we can give her " Transforaminal steroid shot to control the pain . We were advised to consult endocrinologist to control her diabetes .
This was the similar suggestion given to us by 5 international neurosurgeons prior to spinal surgery.
My mother pain was so severe that we need to take immediate action because sometime she was getting unconscious and her skin color was turning blue due to chronic pain.
We decided to proceed with steroid injection as advised by our neurosurgeon . Injection was given and my mother got relief from her chronic pain. I suggested to keep my mother in hospital for observation after the steroid injection but our surgeon refused this suggestion by saying that it is quite routine procedure and nothing to worry for.
Next morning , my mother started to complain about headaches and similar back pain again. We informed our neurosurgeon and he advised some pain killers . By evening , her condition got worse. Her BP was 200 , High Fever and she was complaining about severe headache . At this time she totally forgot her back and leg pain and her focus was about her headaches . I informed this situation to our neurosurgeon and he asked us to come in emergency . At this time my mother started to experience hallucination and altered mental condition.
We took her to hospital with these symptoms where doctors performed multiple test ( CT SCAN , MRI with Contrast) and they came to know that she has developed "Bacterial Meningitis with hydrocephalus " also she got abscess pockets at her epidural layers of spinal cord.
it was totally shocking for us and upon asking the neurosurgeon , he simply replied that she has Spinal Abscess prior to injection and it was misdiagnosed as Sciatica pain. Steroid injection has trigged the infection .
We were advised to proceed with immediate surgery to drain the abscess . Surgery went well and my mom pain started to reduce. Now next thing was Hydrocephalus which was causing pressure on heart . He also advised to pass the shunt to remove excessive water from brain. We proceeded with this advise as well . Her surgery went well . After spending 9 days in ICU now my mom is feeling better and conscious but she developed short term memory issue.
After two weeks of follow up visit , neurosurgeon performed some test again and noticed that Abscess was coming again.
He suggested us to proceed for second surgery immediately and we followed his advised.
She was getting better but her hydrocephalus was not getting cured. She was on medicine for that.
Almost near to her recovery from second surgery , she contracted by Covid 19 and her symptoms were severe due to immune deficiency .
I lost my mother on 12th oct 2020 due to cardiac arrest at Covid 19 ICU.
I did my best to save her life but all my efforts were in vain.
Now ever day almost i am getting these episodes of panic attacks and I am blaming myself that i could have taken better steps to save her life. I really did my best but my inner me is not accepting it and I feel that I am left with no purpose to continue my life . i am breathing but i am lifeless now.
I am getting suicidal thoughts as well . I am blaming myself a lot.

    • @Rene-uz3eb
      @Rene-uz3eb Рік тому

The first paper coming up on risks also agrees that the risks outweigh the benefits, so maybe he did not misspeak
The risks of epidural and transforaminal steroid injections in the Spine: Commentary and a comprehensive review of the literature, 2013.
“the multitude of risks attributed to these injections outweighs the benefits.”
It really seems to me the standard medical approach to spine pain is directly leading down a stairway of progressive worsening and surgeries. NSAIDs make the tissues and bones heal or turnover worse, setting you up for additional problems (esp ibuprofen). Then number two is injections, which can lead to further compression, as well as same as NSAIDs impact tissue healing and turnover since it depresses the immune system which is needed for proper repair. Apart from all the other side effects. So now since nothing ‘helped’, they refer you to decompression, cause that’s the only surgical approach. The so called minimal invasive approaches are either outright fraud, but in any case all set you up for spinal fusion by further destabilizing the spine. So on the one hand they all say you should avoid fusion at all costs because irreversible and not that successful, on the other they push you down exactly that path.
The rf ablation pain therapy seems to be the only surgery that doesn’t make things worse and might allow time for healing, though lack of pain signal might not be ideal. The nonspecific NSAIDs other than ibuprofen might not be too terrible either over some time, but other pain meds not impacting collagen synthesis would be better.

I will be getting these steroid shots and I’m really nervous about it. I’m scared of pain. Even thou I’m in excruciating pain now I can’t even walk. When I do try and walk with my crutches I shake really bad. Ever thing I do is painful. My back has me in tears everyday. I’m thinking I may have nerve damage now because of the way I feel. I’m hoping that the injections will give me back my life.

Joan Mcgilton - Don't be afraid, I've had six of these over the past few years. The risks really are minimal, and they do help many people. You certainly sound like you need help. Sometimes these shots are used as a matter of protocol, as in my case, the shots quit working and so I had a spine fusion surgery at L4/L5. Now a couple of years later I'm back on Epidurals for S1 bulging. I just had the most complex Epidural type of procedure this afternoon and I'm doing fine so far. Please seek treatment and one tip I'll give you, the person doing the procedure should have plenty of experience. As in doing thousands of them, in surgery of any kind, practice makes perfect. Good luck.

I recently had an injection in my shoulder (which I made it abundantly clear that I did not want, because I had it before and it did not help) Because it was my first time being seen by this Doctor (Patrick Joyner - Naples Fl) and in hopes of finding a Doctor that would treat me properly, I let him. That of course was the last time I allowed him to see me as my shoulder became and remains worse for it. If you go see him, make sure you have necessary equipment to defend yourself from this monster.

I am a patient of an Arizona Pain management clinic, for several years. I have had several injections, some caused more pain and others have really helped. I decided to research a little bit and I recently learned that these injections are NOT FDA approved and there are more risks then I was ever told ( also DR. OZ has a special on injections). If I reject the injections, I'm threatened to be kicked out.. I am a person with chronic pain and I have medical records to prove that.. so how can someone in my situation, be kicked out for not wanting to continue down that road? I should be given other options? but that won't fill your pockets, therefore I risk losing my medications and my doctor but have to suffer everyday of my life.. why don't doctors care about people anymore? Is it even legal to be threatened to be kicked out if you refuse the injections? I feel discriminated against..

During the procedure the pain went from my lower back straight to the left side of my brain. I still get the same thing going happen to this day. Too many things to list.
