I'm homeless right now but I'm in a program that will help me back on my feet, and imagining making this is a great motivator for me! This is both something I can do, and pretty cheap all things considered! Hoping to one day come back to this video when I have a home and kitties of my own. Thank you, sir!
I’m very sorry your government failed you, they spent 9 trillion dollars not including interest, chasing some guys with flip flops. I’m very sorry, they could have built you a house , got you a job and helped with everything, but they insisted your not worth it
I love seeing "how to" projects that the average Joe and Josie with little to no experience can accomplish. Too many are done by experts with skills way beyond what the average person can accomplish. I plan to build a Catio similar to this. Thanks so much.😻
Yes! Or they have insanely expensive tools that they think someone like myself with no DIY experience has! No I don’t have a wood cutter with a saw blade!
If you do decide to build one, it should be used for temporary purposes. I noticed our catio can get hot on the back porch. So we check on the pet often. Our pets only like it on cooler days.
Good point. I removed the lockable feature on the cat door because I read how the door can get stuck closed. I want my cats to be able to go in and out freely, depending on the weather. They don't seem to mind the heat, but they are not going out there very often now that it is cold.
Wonderful job! I kept repeating the following phrase as I watched you work so patiently, diligently, and lovingly: “The things we do for our cats.” I love my cats, and it is clear that you and your beautiful wife love yours. God bless you all! Thank you for sharing this project with us.
I plan to adopt two kittens this spring. I planned to harness train them so they might enjoy the outdoors, but only when I take them out. I could actually build this myself so they would have safe access to the out doors, all day long. Thanks for this.
You are a great and truly caring cat Dad. That is a wonderful structure and I'm sure the kitties are enjoying it, especially when the weather turns cooler. Now all they need is a water fountain on the deck to stay hydrated.
One thing that could be done quite easily is to simply drill a hole in the roof and place a bowl under it. It would be re-filled naturally every time it rained so that would make it nice and easy.
I love your design! And I equally adore your sweet, good natured Tennessee soul! We lived in Murfreesboro for about 6 years. Tennessee is beautiful and the people there are the best I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. Thank you for posting this video. God bless you and your lovely wife!
Thanks, Beverly! May the Lord bless you richly as you continue to be a blessing to others, even if it's to be a missionary for Him in another state, LOL!

.@@RoBeaird Seriously, seriously considering. Your video is a great teaching tool. What’s particularly great is the dimensions aren’t fixed, and the place I am considering is taller and shallower, but it doesn’t matter. I have even less work to do than you, because my project won’t need a roof (it’s under my broad eaves). I particularly liked that you fitted a door in your project, since that was something I expected would be too big a challenge for me.
This is awesome!! Thank you for the video and all of the explanations. We are screening in a friend's apartment patio this weekend for her cats to be able to go outside. We are also using PVC for the framing. It is lighter weight than wood and "should be" easier to put together. :) I like the climbing ideas too as that will be our next step of the Catio in a month or so.
I had a female orange tabby with a pompom tail! I'm crying. Never saw another one before. My Gioia lived to be 18 1\2. She's been gone 11 years. I'm saving this video to build a catio.
Yes, those combinations are very rare for a cat. She is very affectionate, unlike most cats. It's a good thing she's little, because she is also a lap cat. We used the largest size dog crate outside our cat window, but had to add smaller mesh because the Carolina wrens, on the lookout for protected nesting locations, kept coming in through the grid and then being "escorted" into the house by the cats. None were killed, but getting them out again was no picnic. Your cats are lucky to have such excellent DIY "staff."
I rarely comment on videos but I just needed you to know that this was very helpful! I altered the dimensions a bit because I made a sort of shelter for the outside cats I feed. This was significantly easier to make than other catio DIY tutorials I attempted with wood. Thank you so much!
Great! Make sure you use the heavy-duty black ties or the metal ones. My clear ones are beginning to snap. Let me know how your catio turns out by joining my Facebook group, DIY Project Station: facebook.com/groups/882510523338538
It’s important to make sure the immediate space outside your catio attracts birds…so having a feeder or just some shrubs or perches makes a big difference. Also, think about the vantage and whether they can get sunshine to bathe in, protection from cold etc.
Birds still come around; In fact, some have found their way into the catio, since the fencing has 1 and 1/2 size square holes. The catio faces the sun, but their platforms are in the shade because of the roof.
This was such an unexpected JOY!!! I have had a metal frame, 5'x3', for several years, but didn't know how to convert it to a catio. My poor cats- 3 of them- have been waiting. You just solved all my "but how do I" problems. My thanks, & also from Pixie, Foxy, & Oliver! (Sub'd, too!)
@@RoBeaird We live in South Florida, USA. Subtropical climate eats unpainted wood, so I had been wracking my brain to figure out ramps & climbing spots that weren't wood. This is a perfect solution for our climate, & I remeasured that metal shipping frame & it's a bit bigger than I thought, 4' deep instead of 3'. That's a lot better volume! 5' wide, 6'6" tall on the house window side, slanting down to 4'6" on the outer side. I've purchased a 50' roll of 1" hole chicken wire, & 200 strong zip ties to start. A pvc shoe rack I already have will be repurposed to have more climbing& resting spots, will be drilling some holes to screw it's joints more firmly together & zip tied to the frame. That, plus a roof, screen & ramp (Your method, of course!) SHOULD finish it out. I've already picked out a nice, stout branch for claw sharpening. 🐈 They observe from the window, not yet knowing how lucky they'll be!
Whoa, WOW!!! I happened across your video, by chance, and couldn't STOP watching! Kudos to you AND your wife, for taking such good care of your feline family members' needs.
Thank you for this and for your happy attitude. It made me feel encouraged that I perhaps could build something for our cats so they can also enjoy the outdoors safely. What a treasure you are! Thank you!! PS…I was thinking the opposite of one commenter on the number of zip ties. Lol! I was thinking…I’ll have to place those every 3” for Loki, our escape artist kitty haha.
I grew up in the 70s and 80s in a village in Germany. We used to have cats and we would let them in and out all the time. We had no catio. I think it was the perfect way to live together.
We live near a very busy road and have coy dogs and coyotes in the area, our cats are much safer indoors. I love this catio idea though and would love to build one.
I love this idea. What considerations would I need to make if I needed to double or triple the size of the enclosure? My two cats are used to free-roaming in Brooklyn back yards (one is feral, so she really needs the freedom), but we are planning to move to a rural area soon. I'm too worried about wild animals to let them roam, but I don't want them to feel shorted on space. This would serve as a temporary enclosure while I build a 30x30 garden that I'll enclose, so the pvc is perfect, but I'm just not sure what I'll need to take into account structural to make it larger. Thanks for the video!
I made a cario for my daughters apartment balcony using cedar wood 2 years ago. It was a covered balcony so I didn’t need the roof panels to keep off rain. Indoor cats need some outdoor space to get fresh air and sunshine. It also keeps them entertained. Indoor cats get bored. Thanks for the tip on using plumbing PVC pipe. I will certainly make a catio like yours next time I have a cat. It really looks good on your deck and doesn’t require much maintenance.
This! This is how you protect your cats from wild animals and roads, and save endangered bird species from cats! Cats are NOT wild animals, they should Not be running loose like wild animals. Theres no such thing as a "feral" cat, because cats are NOT feral!
You people are insane. All animals started out as wild animals and they were domesticated by humans and then humans started crossbreeding them. Cats are originally wild animals and they are more than capable of surviving outside on their own for years. There are millions of cats roaming around because they reproduce quickly.
@@Kit1128 why not? Cats are way more competent than any other pet. If anything they are a threat for the local wildlife since they are very competent predators.
@@chavaspada I spend a lot of my days working with the feral outdoor cats feeding and TNR. Horrendous things happen to them, not to mention getting hit, which is extremely common.. I've adopted several & in generally they have no interest in going back outside. They are domesticated animals and it's only because people are too lazy or cheap to have their pets fixed. Would you like to be out there 24/7 living with fleas, worms, and undiagnosed medical conditions? Most people wouldn't last a month
youtube just let me know about this video! tahnk you so much for sharing! this is perfect! and really simple! i usually see stunning catios but whithout tools it's impossible to put them in place! thank you a lot! honestly! congratulations!
I am so thankful I came across your video! We just went thru the hurricane in Tampa and need a safe enclosure while we repair. Thank you! We have 3- 12 yrs old flame point Siamese and our 2-1yr old partially domesticated sister kittens.
I love the fact that this build is "apartment/rental friendly." You can build it and take it with you. I'm going to make one (maybe 2) for my cats. I can take them apart when we move to our new home 🏡. I don't have a deck, so I will be using sturdy tent hook stakes.
This is very cool and clearly the occupants agree! If I do one, I'd make the roof a clear type, and only halfway across, so the cats can get sun - very important.
Thanks. Good idea with the clear roof. My catio faces the sun all afternoon. The opaque roof gives them shade but half of the catio still gets sun if they want to go to that side.
I dont even have a cat, but I found your video very thorough and informative. You take your time and show a very easy to follow process, with peaceful music. This was a very relaxing video as I'm drinking my theraflu while in bed, recovering from a mild flu. Thanks!
The guy who makes these videos is amazing. I hope if I die, I come back reincarnated as one of his pets! It's clear he loves his animals by embarking on such a project. He's even responding to all the comments people post. What a boss Edit: AND he composed the music?? Top tier. I would love to pay this guy to guide me over video chat if I have questions, if such a thing is available!

Nice job. Our daughter and her husband have about 5 indoor cats. She talked about a cattery when she was a child. Thanks for the lessons. We are Tennessee folks, too.
Our climate is different. We have used zip ties for outdoor projects and they get brittle and break over time. I suggest you periodically check yours and replace any after a year or so. Maybe you will be lucky and they last a lot longer for you. I know how resourceful cats are at being escape artists. I love how your catio turned out. Great design and your cats look happy.❤️
Always dream of building a cat outdoor patio for cats. This is one neatest and simple DYI way to construct, and it is very tasteful. Thank you for sharing
I loved! I have a lot of PVC pipes and that's how I made an outdoor cage for my cats. I needed to put the grass and those elevations, they were a very good idea! The only thing I would change would be to use galvanized wire instead of plastic straps, since the straps burst in the sun and goodbye kittens.
We have lanai’s here in FL. But you did a fantastic job on this! A great idea! So well planned out, you even listed the list of materials! You get an A+ on the project. Very well done ! Am sure your cats are HAPPY!
this video made me very happy!! i loved watching you execute this project with the plastic piping! i wouldn’t have thought of that ! i also liked that your wife worked on some parts as well!
Love the idea and the ease of construction. But most of all, I love that the Lord was brought into the project and video. Hallelujah! He deserves all our praise. Thank you for pointing to Jesus AND a great idea for us cat lovers.

Excellent project! You have given me an idea how to do a catio without wood frame. The hard part is the tubes to be cut into shorter pieces for the connectors to work,And the catio , needs more support to stand gutsy wind as I wish to build a stand alone catio on the grass, not adjacent to the window. 😉
Thanks! I used a PVC cutter to shorten the pipes. You'll probably need to anchor down your catio with U shaped stakes, like are used for trampolines. Let me know how yours turns out!

I have built, years ago, a 300 sq ft outdoor cat structure on property I owned, but now I live in an apartment, so I may just try out your idea for a catio for my four cats. I also like the cat window idea, especially because it means less potential damage to my rental unit. Thank you....and I just subscribed and look forward to more videos.

This is really great! Had been looking at so many different ideas but this is the first I've seen to use PVC pipe. This certainly seems easier to work with and faster. Thanks for posting!
From your Georgia neighbor, kudos! This is an awesome idea! I do not have cats for the moment (I have some strays that I feed from time to time), but in the event I decide to own some in the future, a catio is on the list of must haves! Great video!
Hello, neighbor! Thanks for watching. Georgia is beautiful, especially around Brasstown Bald Mountain. We stayed in a cabin with a private dock on Lake Chatuge last September. Had a wonderful time there.
Great job! It's worth mentioning that you should use UV protected Zip ties and UV protected paint on the PVC. This material will get brittle over time. Unless you're not in direct sunlight like I am in Texas. Have a blessed day, brother!
Thanks! Too bad I didn't know there was such a thing as UV protected zip ties, LOL. Thanks for sharing that for the viewers here, though. I didn't paint any of the PVC. That's one reason I used PVC instead of wood, so I wouldn't have to mess with paint. God bless!
Loved the video! Such a great catio! And was about to post the same thing: Go grab a bag of UV protected zipties (a bag of 1000 is about 30 bucks at Home Depot. They're usually black) and swap out the white ones to keep the kitties safe and secure. Also, go buy a ziptie gun (20-30 dollars). It tightens and flush cuts the excess ziptie material with one squeeze. Will make things go much faster and save your hands. Good luck and keep up the great work!@@RoBeaird
Great idea! We've been stumped on how to modify our current catio setup and this might be the answer! Definitely more affordable than what we were thinking of, and easier to design and build.

Great ideas! Yep, our cats were very interested in mine while I was building it, LOL!

Absolutely genius. Your cat is happy! And thank God for a smart wife keeping you healthy...that sun can be dangerous. 😎
Thanks! Yup, the Tennessee sun is brutal, LOL! My wife is indeed a blessing from God!
beautiful I wish you could build one for my cats! your cats are lucky!
Thanks. They certainly enjoy it!
Whoa, WOW!!!
I happened across your video, by chance, and couldn't STOP watching!
Kudos to you AND your wife, for taking such good care of your feline family members' needs.
Thanks, Robin!
Really nice for the kitties.
Thanks!
God bless you for loving your cats this much! ❤😊
Thank you! May the Lord bless you, as well!
Thank you! You can do it. You and your cats will enjoy it. Let me know how yours turns out.

This is awesome!!! My 3 babies would love this, thanks for caring for our 4 legged kids!❤❤
Thanks, glad to do it!
I grew up in the 70s and 80s in
a village in Germany. We used
to have cats and we would let
them in and out all the time.
We had no catio. I think it was
the perfect way to live together.
We lost two outdoor cats to disease so we keep our cats in now. At least they can enjoy the fresh air in the catio.
We live near a very busy road and have coy dogs and coyotes in the area, our cats are much safer indoors. I love this catio idea though and would love to build one.
That's so great. Love that you can sit out there with kitties in their catio.
Thanks!
Will the catio be free standing or attached to the house like mine? If free standing, I would upgrade to 1 inch pvc for stability.
Yes it would be freestanding. Thanks!! @@RoBeaird
OK, let me know how it turns out!

I love that y’all took the time to care for your fur family! Thank you
GOD for ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL!
Amen to that!
Loved the design. If you can’t build it with zip ties and PVC, you don’t need it!☺️
Thanks!
This! This is how you protect your cats from wild animals and roads, and save endangered bird species from cats! Cats are NOT wild animals, they should Not be running loose like wild animals. Theres no such thing as a "feral" cat, because cats are NOT feral!
Wrong
They should not have to be living outdoors, but millions upon millions ARE with no homes due to people's irresponsibility.

So glad it was helpful. Good luck with the repairs.
I love the fact that this build is "apartment/rental friendly." You can build it and take it with you. I'm going to make one (maybe 2) for my cats.
I can take them apart when we move to our new home 🏡.
I don't have a deck, so I will be using sturdy tent hook stakes.
Great idea!

@RoBeaird I will post pictures after I get it done.
I'm in the planning stages right now so I can determine how much I need in supplies.
Have fun!
Amazing work! Thank you for sharing your project with us. The kitties look so happy and relaxed outside. And your yard is absolutely stunning!
Thanks!
Very good, sir. I am so happy seeing humans doing for their creatures like this...in the end, who enjoys it more? All of you! So nice.
Thanks! We do enjoy it, and so do our cats.
This is the sweetest thing I ever seen. I want to be one of your cats. Love the design
Thanks!
Good to see that the (cat) Building Inspectors were on the job just about every step of the way.
Yep, LOL!
I don't even own a cat but this was a fun video to watch. Fun energy and positive vibes! Keep it up!
Thanks!
Hello from Australia, that is a very nice and simple catio, thanks for sharing, bless you and your wife.
Greetings from Tennessee! Thanks for watching. God bless you as well!
I dont even have a cat, but I found your video very thorough and informative. You take your time and show a very easy to follow process, with peaceful music. This was a very relaxing video as I'm drinking my theraflu while in bed, recovering from a mild flu. Thanks!
Thanks for watching. May the Lord grant you a speedy recovery!
It looks exquisite and I love the simplistic yet practical. Easy to clean, as well
Thanks! I actually never thought about the ease of cleaning aspect, LOL.
DYI is always GREAT...I know your fur babies is greatful...🥰
Thanks! Yes, they love it.
Excellent cat playground... May Cats & their parents be happy, healthy & (should be) wealthy... respect from Thailand...
Thank you! Respect from Tennessee...
There's no end to what PVC pipe can construct! Researching Catios...love the simplicity of yours. Thx
You are very welcome. Thanks for watching!
The guy who makes these videos is amazing. I hope if I die, I come back reincarnated as one of his pets! It's clear he loves his animals by embarking on such a project. He's even responding to all the comments people post. What a boss
Edit: AND he composed the music?? Top tier. I would love to pay this guy to guide me over video chat if I have questions, if such a thing is available!
Thanks, Zack, for your kind remarks! If you use Facebook, you can join my group, DIY Project Station: facebook.com/groups/882510523338538 to chat and share pictures and videos of your projects.
Nice job. Our daughter and her husband have about 5 indoor cats. She talked about a cattery when she was a child. Thanks for the lessons.
We are Tennessee folks, too.
Thank you, neighbor!
Thanks! I will keep an eye on the zip ties. Good thing I used a lot of them!
Always dream of building a cat outdoor patio for cats. This is one neatest and simple DYI way to construct, and it is very tasteful. Thank you for sharing
Thank you! You are very welcome.
I loved! I have a lot of PVC pipes and that's how I made an outdoor cage for my cats. I needed to put the grass and those elevations, they were a very good idea!
The only thing I would change would be to use galvanized wire instead of plastic straps, since the straps burst in the sun and goodbye kittens.
Thanks!
I couldn't stop smiling through this! It is just what I need. Thank you !👏🏻
You are very welcome. Thanks for watching!
Your creative ideas are so clever. I enjoyed watching your vision materialize & prove where there's a will, there's a way. Thank you!
Thank you! Yup, prayer and perseverance wins the day!
We have lanai’s here in FL. But you did a fantastic job on this! A great idea! So well planned out, you even listed the list of materials! You get an A+ on the project. Very well done ! Am sure your cats are HAPPY!
Thank you! A lanai is perfect for cats!
this video made me very happy!! i loved watching you execute this project with the plastic piping! i wouldn’t have thought of that ! i also liked that your wife worked on some parts as well!
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Love the idea and the ease of construction. But most of all, I love that the Lord was brought into the project and video. Hallelujah! He deserves all our praise. Thank you for pointing to Jesus AND a great idea for us cat lovers.
Thank you, and yes, to God be the glory! I couldn't do it without him. I depend on him for every DIY project I do. God bless you!
Your way to attach the roof is awesome! Our cats would love this. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks! Let me know how yours turns out. You can do it. I'm not a professional builder and this was the first time I built something with PVC. Yes, your cats would love it. Ours sure do. 🙂

Thanks, and greetings from Tennessee!
I don't have cats, but your video, cats, and tutorial are entertaining. Very nice project. Congratulations.
Thank you!
wonderful , really nice.. these cats must be in cat heaven here.. so nice of you to make this for them
Thank you. Yep, they are enjoying it, especially the little one. 🙂
I am so grateful spirit lead me to this video. I have wanted to do this for my cats and wasn’t sure about the process but you definitely gave me huge inspiration that I can do this. Thank you so much.❤❤

Thank you! God has indeed blessed me richly. May he do the same to you!
Love this. Low cost and little skills needed. Perfect!
Thanks!

What a great instructional video. Thank you for sharing your project and the lessons learned.
Thanks! You are very welcome. Thanks for watching and for your comment.
Thanks! Good tips!
