We Dutch save money until we can buy what we want. And because we can spend our money only once, we check if we really need it, get the best quality for that price, sleep over it for a few nights and than take a decision. Going out for shopping to satisfy our consumerism isn't 'our style'. And the latest model? Nah, we go for established quality, let others test the latest model out, we buy it next time.
Sure, but it is changing. Over consumerism is becoming more of a thing. Creditcards are still not very common in the Netherlands, but services like Klarna contribute a lot to the debt that a lot of young people are in. It is shifting and spending more than what you have is slowly becoming normal here as well. Plenty of people here buy a new phone every year, lots of people buy clothes they only wear once or twice (fast fashion). I guess we're not yet at the level the USA is at, but we are definitely moving in the same direction.
@@rovado22 The closest thing I have to a credit-card is VISA-pay. My bank-card has a second number that acts like a sort of prepaid-credit card, treated as a credit-card online, but you can't spend more than your bank-balance. And it's subtracted from your account the moment you buy something using it, no interests, nothing.
@@rovado22 The over consumption mentality of the younger people (and i'm still young myself) annoys me a lot. But I guess i'm different because when I grew up, we did not have much money to begin with. Late teens / early twenties though, I had to learn to handle money myself though. The only time I got into debt was when I became ill, on medical bills. Due to illness I'm still not rich and need to take care of my expenses greatly. So I guess kids and teenagers need to be thought finances in school, to a higher degree than is currently common practice, if practice at all. Heck even adults nowadays need to learn much more about this. Learning the real value of money and the stuff that is bought with it.
@@rovado22 In the past postorder companies like Wehkamp and Termeulen gave credit too, sadly a lot of people who thought they had nothing to lose, got stuck in debt for very long.
5:17 always buy second hand (refurbished) smartphones, laptops, iPads and so on. Generally do buy new household appliances, like washing machines and fridges, because they are hard to replace and usually stay for decades. It saves a lot of money, it is better for the environment and I can get higher specs like more storage. So in stead of having just 64 gigs in an iPad, I can buy a model with 256 or 512 gigs. I am actually typing this post on a refurbished iPad Pro 2017. Works great!
You might want to look into a FairPhone smart phone. Mid range price tag, and they promise 5 years of parts and software support. All parts user replaceable and available at reasonable price. Tools and instructions included with replacement part purchases. Dutch company.
Being Dutch myself, I've never felt judged by what I drive in, what bicycle I have or what clothes I wear. Some people like tech, they like good cars, expensive brand clothess, but by having all that, they do not have a different status.
Love the video and there seems to be quite a bit to unpack. Rushing: I don't know how your life is, of course, but what I notice in myself is that when I have a busy day with lots of little things to take care of (meetings, deadlines, catching the train on time, wanting to see my kids before they go to bed, get paperwork in order, etc, etc) my mind gets a little overwhelmed and goes into rush-mode to ensure everything is done in time and that I can check every box on my day's to-do list. The things for me is that that rush-mode is not the kind of energy I can easily or automatically climb down from and translates into everything getting rush, including walking, because my brain is still in overdrive. Even sitting down in the train feel rushed. Only when I realize 'dude, you're done, there's nothing more on your list' I can actively slow myself down. Replacing products: I think it's really hard to compare Dutchies/Europeans to Americans simply because of the vast differences in how finances work (for example you basically need to buy that iPhone 16 Pro at one point because if you don't you don't build up a credit rating), how people flex/show off, and how people care of what other people think of them. It seems to me that people in the Netherlands care a lot less about showing off and how others perceive them. People pleasing: This is a tough one. I grew up with undiagnosed ADHD (until diagnosed at 41)and while that is vastly different from how and where you grew up, the concept of 'being seen as this or that and thus treated differently' is rather familiar. What helped me was really stepping back and looking at then and now: 'I'm not a teen anymore. I'm not in that place anymore. Whatever I did in the past has absolutely no bearing on who I worked on becoming now nor do the people in my life now have anything to do with past-me.' Kinda like starting with a clean slate. Any reactions I have now towards people that interact with me in a certain way is basically old trauma, obtained in a life that no longer exists, y' know. Not to say that I never react harsher than was warranted (I was never much of a 'flight' person, choosing to fight more often than not, mentally speaking) but to me those are just reminders that I'm not done leaving my past behind me yet. It's just a learning moment. Of course, these are all just my experiences and opinions so maybe they mean nothing to other people 😅
Hi Sky, love your positive vibe and your reflections. In my Dutch direct way: you are indeed a smiler, but I've noticed that you are smiling a lot, in between almost every sentence. I get the feeling that you also laugh when you don't feel like laughing, just for the sake of staying positive. But it's also important to acknowledge when you feel sad. You don't have to ruin everybodies life with it, but just be yourself man; don't laugh all your feelings away! That is something that a lot of us Dutch are maybe a little bit better at; we dare to complain, or dare to say that we don't feel happy at certain moments. We don't laugh, rationalize or overcompensate less appreciated feelings. We're not faking smiles, laughter or happiness. And that's ok! I've lived in Texas USA for a while and it's just só unrealistic, all those over exagerated smiley faces and thr fake friendliness. You can just sense it, because the heart and the eyes don't smile with them. Must be hurting on those forced smiling cheek muscles 😅 Just relax, chill out, be yourself. We all have moments when we just feel like crap. It's human, and owning up on that gives others the space to be themselves too. It's so liberating! 🥳
Bro, asking what you want is a hierarchy thing. Feel equal, because in the end we are! We talk the same way to our boss as to our colleagues. i know.. hard to overcome if you're not used to it. You slowly get there maestro!
This is big culture difference. We give our honest opinion. Honestly it is stupid how most countries have a strict hierarchy as they are wasting talent and good ideas because they don't allow people that are actually doing the work to share their thoughts and experiences. It is much more likely that the good ideas originate on the floor than from someone that is stuck in spreadsheets for most of the day. Not saying managers always listen here, but we do a lot better than most countries.
Don't beat yourself up for being too nice, in many ways it is a very good quality, unless you sell yourself short. The world is seriously lacking nice people!! Besides, like you said; in the States it simply was a survival tool.
My favorite thing, when I'm having a coffee with a friend is just sitting outside and watch the people walking by. Or on a bench near the water, watching boats and/or birds drifting by. Just relaxing! 😎

Love your approache at no spend, like keeping eating healty ( you can save so much on your food bill. By not buying sodas, takeouts including coffee or a bottle of water, take it from home) drive through, sweets, crisps, and stay social but doing it more frugal, do a lunch at home for friends. When going out for a drink: drink a little less, every bit will count up, you'll see. I will join you and Kate Kaden
I'm a mac user and I used my previous iMac for like 12 years before I bought my M1 iMac almost 3 years ago and now I sometimes read that people are thinking of upgrading their M1 iMac for an M4 iMac because M1's are outdated and old. I'm like WTH are you talking about?! Mine still feels new and fresh.
🥷🥷☕ About the "slowing down" part btw: I too struggle with it sometimes, but I find that it helps a lot if I just take my time to appreciate the small things. Like enjoying that good cup of coffee for just a bit longer while taking in the scenery, or looking at the Christmas decorations everybody put effort into. It not only helps me slow down, it also helps my general mood 😊

They don’t like to spend money unnecessarily on brand new things for show. They do look after things. My colleague described Amsterdam as a comfy pair of old slippers and I thought yes that’s spot on. Love it there.
If you just say what you want you can stroll ! Ive been loving your videos lately! The youtube algoritm served me well. It's cool to hear an americans perspective on our country. I'm happy to hear you say you enjoy so many things about our culture that I just take for granted.
I also walk fast, but time is money they say so, I hope to get wealthy 😄Just joking. The thing is that I like to walk at a fast pace. It's a kind of exercise, to move a little bit. Besides that, t's a good way to warm up, especially in winter, while when chilling with friends it's totally another story. I enjoy that time and I take the time to enjoy it. 😊As for buying new things, it reminds me of the words that people often spend money they don't have for things they don't need to impress people they don't really like 😄 Thanks for your thoughts 🙏😊
I see you walking op de Grote Markt and I wonder have you ever saw the cannonball from the Spanish war stuck in the wall of the house of the Jewelry Citroen. if you walk through the Ally between the Church behind you (time stamp 12:44) and the building called Vlees market you see the house with the Cannon ball. And indeed do not walk fast but in the towncenter of Haarlem, look to the buildings on the 1st floor, the architecture is amazing and old
I say to my boyfriend all the time "I'm from the South...I cannot physically say my opinion so directly"..for the US I'm incredibly direct, but nothing like here and it's so refreshing to have people just tell me what they want. My birthday is this weekend so I'll be over Haarlem-side for that kerstmarkt!
For the phones many people used to buy new phones when their contract would get to an end. Because it was "free". This has changed that you need to see the difference what is for the contract and which part for the phone. This helps people make better choices.
I'm a fast walker as well. I've worked in Groningen between 1989 and 2018 and we used to use our break to visit the centre and check out the latest releases in the music stores or what new books were out in book stores. If you have only 30 minutes to walk to the centre, visit a record shop and walk back you have to walk pretty fast😊
If you want to do something fun and old-timey on Saturday the 28th, come have a look at the Midwinter grinding at corn mill Nieuw Leven in Hazerswoude Dorp….
if the phone does internet, if the phone calls, then the phone aint broke. and what aint broke dont need replacing thats just wasteful. Thats how we think on the phone/tech front.
In a restaurant it's not: " I want this, period." It's more like: " I want this, is it available?" or " I would like to have so and so." The last one is the best. You express what you want but in a way that let the other one know ' if it's available" If it's not available, in general you learn about why it is not and then you get the options to pick from or they leave you room to pick something else. Writing all of this down, make me realize that we're practical. No need to beat around the bush. The directness makes life easier and leaves room to do other things, fun things preferably.
Tip: have small planned short walks a couple a times a few weeks, where u consciously walk slower, dont force it outside of that, then afterwards u will see it gradually integrating more naturally! Matching pase with another is also a common courtesy in dutch culture, they'll seemingly rudely ask u to pick up your pase cycling too! 😅
What helped me slowing down is setting a alarm on my phone every 3 hours asking me if I'm in a rush. It just stops you from what you are doing and becoming aware of the here and now and you're behaviour at that moment. Maybe it could help for you to. ❤
You're so right. I have an iPhone 6 or 7 (don't even know thats now long ago I bought it) It still looks new and It does everything I need and I hope it will last numerous years to come! It speaks for it self that I'm Dutch
About the phones, I would even argue we use the opposite language. I (and most people I know) would be tended to say (for many years) "well, there is nothing wrong with this phone, why would I replace it?" If it functions, it functions. Who cares if some random process might be slightly faster? All apps (as far as I know) work in a timely manner. So no reason to replace this 5 year old phone (yet).
I'm a fast walker by nature, too. Only when walking for fun I tend to slow down a bit to be able to enjoy my surroundings. Not needing to have the latest, newest, greatest and most expensive of anything is ingrained in Dutch culture, at least with me. "Doe maar normaal, dan doe je al gek genoeg." But it seems like the younger generations are losing this ability.
you're right... doesn't need to be the newest model ... if it works it works. Why have the newest if the only real difference is a quarter of a millisecond per page or 15 pixels more on pictures you as a regular commoner are never going to see the difference in anyway?
I got a refurbished 2022 SE. The old one didn't work anymore, and didn't see the point of buying a flashy new one, this one works great, so no point in spending a load of money. As for your fast walking... that's basically what most do in the States, and you grew up with it, always aware of your surroundings as there was a lot of crime. 11:07 so it takes some practice. Here, we don't need to rush all the time. And slowing down is a good thing. At a point now where my health won't let me anyway.
5:30 My Poco phone from 9 years old died, I have now the Samsung Galaxy that was the previous one of my best friend's brother, who doesn't use it anymore.. my back-up phone for the time being was a Wiley fox 13 years old
We just bought a house in the Netherlands, I told most of my friends and relatives that I bought a house without mentioning the price of the house. The only one that asked for the price was my brother in law who is from the USA.
Honestly i did recently get a brand new tv, a really nice Oled from LG. And the main reason was just that netflix stopped working on my old one.. But i think after having my old one for 12 years i got my money's worth :D
Just be yourself. Because at the end of the day there will be people who like you for who you are and people who don't. Like i tell my 12 year old 'them not liking you is a them problem, not a you problem'. Saving money is something most of us are indeed taught from birth basically. And thanks for the heads up about the kerstmarkt. My daughter goes to school in Haarlem, close to the city center, so we might check that out tomorrow or saturday. Alvast een fijn weekend gewenst.
These things happened to me in reverse. I spent a year in New Zealand and sometimes kinda got in trouble being too straight forward 😂. And I really got tired sometimes with all the sorry's excuse me's and thank you's 😂. Although Kiwi's really want to know how you are doing when they ask that question. And they're really helpful and nice people!
My screen is broken a bit and the back fell off, used tape to stick it back on, but it still works,, watched this video on it😊 Just make sure you keep that laugh, its contagious!!!
As a Dutchnan i noticed n NY everyone always seems to be in a rush. You don't see people relaxing, doing nothing - they walk with purpose and if there's a risk of things slowing down due to some obstacle, you hear someone in a uniform shout 'let's go, let's go'!
My first smartphone was a budget phone. My second was a flagship. If you buy expensive you dont need to upgrade as often. You can wait some generations before upgrading. Especially lately the upgrades become relatively small. I went S Advance, S5, S7, S10, S22+ I am debating the S25+ but if its using the weaker Exynox SOC, its going to be a skip for me.
I actually have a question (because you did say you grew up in the hood), are you still very aware of your surroundings? do you have that third eye in the back of your head? do you walk into a building and immediately look where the emergency exit is? Sorry that was more than a question.
The one thing I do update regularly to the newest is Tech stuff. It’s 2024, I do everything online and want the fastest and best merch. Can’t stand it working slow(er).
Walk fast! Excersize is good for you! But if you got the time, enjoy yourself! If thats a stroll to take in the view - why not? If you prefer to see more places briefly - why not? Live your life at YOUR pace!
My work gives me a laptop. It's leased so every three years I get a new I7 with more memory and more cores. I don't notice the difference because I never use the total power of a machine like that. So why?? If I get my own PC I just look what is available for a reasonable price. I'm never going to use the power/speed that a machine like that is offering already. I hope the current one will last a long time again.
walking speed isn't the same everywhere in the netherlands, i live in the north and my roommate from amsterdam was forever irritated by how fast people walk here compared to amsterdam lmao
Please stay as enthousiastic, active and smiling as you are! To become a bit more outgoing and smile more often: that's what the Durch can learn from the Americans. And my Samsung Galaxy A01 still works prefectly, so why buy another one? The only problem is that it is very hard to find a new cover (hoesje)...
I'm Dutch with a foreign wife, already 26 years together, and I still today have to keep on asking her to say to me and others "exactly what she wants". This must be really a Dutch thing :)
iPhone 13 Mini. Love the size. I'll upgrade when I really, _really,_ have to. E: And if you think your choice of phone makes any difference with regards to how I think of you, you're out of your mind.
Hmm ,let me see. What are YOU good at, and the Dutch are struggling with? Not complaining!!! (This is such a Dutch Meme and I love it) You know, it is very hard not to have what I want. If I really want it, it becomes such a heartbreak not to have it. We have the desires too. But that is why saving up is so important. But of course, sometimes it is not readily available. Here and also around the community here when we speak of items it is often "Don't worry it will go on discount in a year when a new version with a pinch of difference releases!" So it motivates the "waiting time" so to speak. It is something I use often. I am waiting for 2 years for a controller to go from 280 EU but it doesn't look like it is going down anytime soon, so I still am waiting!
We do have a saying here doe normaal dat is goed genoeg. This also means for your stuff. My phone still is a Samsung A10 with a broken screen. But why replace? It still functions without problems. My laptop? It functions. Jeans? Just the cheap ones at the shoe store Bristol. The fit just as well as a levi jeans
for your struggle in the endless loop of being on the move. its really easy to take it slow first of all, if you know where ur going or what ur going to do then you can estimate the time it takes. for example i have to get the bus at 8, google says its a 10 min walk, so you start walking at 7:40, you know you can make it, even if something happens ur still on time so why the hurry. just add 10-20 minutes to any trip and have no stress. if you are going to do a job, add at least another 25% of time. if you have a fk up you have plenty of time to fix it. if there was no issue great, you finished early. and if you have to do something and there is probably no way to finish it. instead of trying to go fast fking things up having to redo costing even more time just to still need a second day to to finish. u couldve just rrelaxed, say fk it. and do the job proper the first time knowing ull be back anyway and still end it probably faster than hurrying and fking it up. from personal experience, if you just relax and do the job properly ur gonna make lets say 45. then if you really push yourself you can make maybe 50. what is that extra 5 going to accomplish, in the end the risk of failure is way too high to compensate for the gain of pushing. for an example, we had to make 50 pieces, they were in a hurry so they didnt check equipment properly, so 5 pieces had to be redone. okay so what do theses 5 failures really mean? 1 :you wasted time on making them, 2:then you have to waste either time by undoing mistakes( cost equal or more time to make it in the first place so 3x total time. 1 time make, 1 time undo mistake, 1 time make) or material(starting over) to redo them. profit margin isnt high enough to make 2 from 1 sold let alone 3, so either way those 5 are sold at a loss. then since have to redo em u can make at most 45 anyway (50-5 redos) but since 5 of them are sold at a loss, you really made only profit on 40 that day probably even less. so to make up you will have to do 3 perfect days at full speed just to be equal to the slower relaxed guys, so at day 4 your hurried your ass off to equal the chilling guys. then youd still be having made less money cuz even tho sold is the same, the cost on redo is simply too high. another example. we had to make 6 large pieces, to make them each took about 3 hours if done properly, so little over 2 days. instead they tried to do it in 2 days. they did it. then 2 months later we had to fix the mistakes wasting about 3 full days to fix 2 that failed. so they saved 2 hours, to later cost 24 hours, 24 hours of loss. back to traffic: u can move fast, but u cant heal fast.

Yea I agree with you! I’ve been buying second hand the past years and it’s amazing!
Sometimes I’ll buy something on Amazon secondhand but doesn’t always work out. Lol😅
You might want to look into a FairPhone smart phone. Mid range price tag, and they promise 5 years of parts and software support. All parts user replaceable and available at reasonable price. Tools and instructions included with replacement part purchases.

Must be hurting on those forced smiling cheek muscles 😅
Just relax, chill out, be yourself.
Not saying managers always listen here, but we do a lot better than most countries.
don't be "positive" don't be "negative" be real and realistic... the world is like the weather, usually grey, and not black or white..

Your videos made such an impression on me about Netherlands. I'm thinking to love there in fall for 1 year course then finding job. Thank you so much for your videos, I love your enthusiasm.
Sky, tomorrow 13 december I'm on the kerstmarkt in Haarlem! I'm keeping my eye out for a talking man with a white cap 😄
Love your approache at no spend, like keeping eating healty ( you can save so much on your food bill. By not buying sodas, takeouts including coffee or a bottle of water, take it from home) drive through, sweets, crisps,
and stay social but doing it more frugal, do a lunch at home for friends. When going out for a drink: drink a little less, every bit will count up, you'll see.

About the "slowing down" part btw: I too struggle with it sometimes, but I find that it helps a lot if I just take my time to appreciate the small things. Like enjoying that good cup of coffee for just a bit longer while taking in the scenery, or looking at the Christmas decorations everybody put effort into. It not only helps me slow down, it also helps my general mood 😊

Why buying the latest expensive crap today, if you can buy it a few years later for half the price??

My dad used to say "don't rush, leave on time!"
Seriously I love your channel. SUBSCRIBED!
Which vlog setup did you use for this video?
We call asking what you want in a nice way being assertive. There's many tools online to learn about it. 😊

Love your reviews greetings from the Netherlands Hilversum
Found myself watching all your video's. So I just subbbed.
With a phone I usually buy a high end version and than skip 3, 4, 5+ version updates. As long as it works fine, no need to upgrade.
you're right... doesn't need to be the newest model ... if it works it works. Why have the newest if the only real difference is a quarter of a millisecond per page or 15 pixels more on pictures you as a regular commoner are never going to see the difference in anyway?
Be yourself is the best thing.
Slow and steady wins the race......certainly over an entire lifetime.
I really love your Dragon ball refferences👍👍🤗
I got a refurbished 2022 SE. The old one didn't work anymore, and didn't see the point of buying a flashy new one, this one works great, so no point in spending a load of money. As for your fast walking... that's basically what most do in the States, and you grew up with it, always aware of your surroundings as there was a lot of crime. 11:07 so it takes some practice. Here, we don't need to rush all the time. And slowing down is a good thing. At a point now where my health won't let me anyway.
Still using my iPhone7; its still working perfect and does all the things I need it to do. So why change?
5:30 My Poco phone from 9 years old died, I have now the Samsung Galaxy that was the previous one of my best friend's brother, who doesn't use it anymore.. my back-up phone for the time being was a Wiley fox 13 years old

We just bought a house in the Netherlands, I told most of my friends and relatives that I bought a house without mentioning the price of the house. The only one that asked for the price was my brother in law who is from the USA.
Modesty is a virtue!
For going fast by leg power we use bicycles.

My work gives me a laptop. It's leased so every three years I get a new I7 with more memory and more cores. I don't notice the difference because I never use the total power of a machine like that. Not complaining!!! (This is such a Dutch Meme and I love it)
You know, it is very hard not to have what I want.
It still functions without problems. for your struggle in the endless loop of being on the move. its really easy to take it slow
first of all, if you know where ur going or what ur going to do then you can estimate the time it takes. for example i have to get the bus at 8, google says its a 10 min walk, so you start walking at 7:40, you know you can make it, even if something happens ur still on time so why the hurry. just add 10-20 minutes to any trip and have no stress.
if you are going to do a job, add at least another 25% of time. if you have a fk up you have plenty of time to fix it. if there was no issue great, you finished early. and if you have to do something and there is probably no way to finish it. instead of trying to go fast fking things up having to redo costing even more time just to still need a second day to to finish. u couldve just rrelaxed, say fk it. and do the job proper the first time knowing ull be back anyway and still end it probably faster than hurrying and fking it up.
from personal experience, if you just relax and do the job properly ur gonna make lets say 45. then if you really push yourself you can make maybe 50. what is that extra 5 going to accomplish, in the end the risk of failure is way too high to compensate for the gain of pushing. for an example, we had to make 50 pieces, they were in a hurry so they didnt check equipment properly, so 5 pieces had to be redone. okay so what do theses 5 failures really mean? 1 :you wasted time on making them, 2:then you have to waste either time by undoing mistakes( cost equal or more time to make it in the first place so 3x total time. 1 time make, 1 time undo mistake, 1 time make) or material(starting over) to redo them. profit margin isnt high enough to make 2 from 1 sold let alone 3, so either way those 5 are sold at a loss. then since have to redo em u can make at most 45 anyway (50-5 redos) but since 5 of them are sold at a loss, you really made only profit on 40 that day probably even less. so to make up you will have to do 3 perfect days at full speed just to be equal to the slower relaxed guys, so at day 4 your hurried your ass off to equal the chilling guys. then youd still be having made less money cuz even tho sold is the same, the cost on redo is simply too high.
another example. we had to make 6 large pieces, to make them each took about 3 hours if done properly, so little over 2 days. instead they tried to do it in 2 days. they did it. then 2 months later we had to fix the mistakes wasting about 3 full days to fix 2 that failed. so they saved 2 hours, to later cost 24 hours, 24 hours of loss.

u can move fast, but u cant heal fast.
