    I work for UP down in Roseville and that train at the end of the video was the IBRLC 23 and a funny fact that same train 24 hours or so later derailed on the joint line south of Bakersfield after sting lining, we were headed home from Portland oregon after our grand baby was born and at Nicholas California we meet this same train telling the wife that train looks funny the way it's built and could cause some problems up on the Tehachapi grade, then the next day it happened. What a great video Sir.

      Wow wow!! It’s amazing that you recognized that train! It indeed is a hazard with loads behind empty wells and it had a derailment due to that very cause. I wonder if you know whether or not it had a DPU added? Tehachapi is notorious for string lining. Thanks for sharing sir! Say hi to conductor Zack Soren for me! He showed me the Donner and Feather River lines just a couple weeks ago. Great young rail!

    Thank you for the excellent video! Klamath Falls is still an interesting railroad town but prior to 1990, it was really interesting, at least to me. There was the OC&E going east to Bly, SP going in three directions (and the Modoc was complete to Wendel), and BN out to Bieber. The good old days.

      Absolutely no question. I wish I could have seen it myself. I only saw the railroads from the car window on road trips. Today is but a shadow of the past!

    Hey, Jeremy! I've watched this video three times and have learned more with every viewing. It's just a marvelous piece of work! So many stories of the Modoc come to mind; a friend who hired on with SP as a fireman in 1969 and was absolutely scared to death on his first descent into Canby with the engines' dynos howling and trucks rattling back and forth between the railheads, the hundreds of pronghorn sheep killed by a train in the cut beneath the Perez Overhead as they sheltered from high winds and sub-zero temperatures, and the epic derailment at Chin Road and Hwy 39 when a southbound manifest freight went into the loading spur at Wong's Potatoes at track speed, plowed through the end-of-track barricade, and across Chin Road. The locomotives ended up in the ditch on the west side of Hwy 39, and the railcars went everywhere, including directly through Wong's packing shed. What's amazing about the story is, about 45 minutes ahead of the train's arrival, a conveyor motor had fried and Sam Wong had sent the employees home. So, the only person in the shed when the train showed up was the bookkeeper, and she saw the train through her office window "a lot closer than usual", grabbed her cat, and started running. I'll always believe God knew the loading spur switch had never been lined back to the main and had come up with a way to get Sam's 60 employees out of the facility before dozens of loaded boxcars tore the building from end to end. We were hauling logs out of the Tionesta country at the time on Hwy 39, so I was able to capture some great pics of the wreck. Gosh, Jeremy, the prime mover sheered out of the lead locomotive, took the bodywork with it, went over the cab and into the ditch, and the head-end crew didn't get more than a few scratches. Sadly, a couple of guys who had hitched a ride in an empty boxcar were killed in the wreck. It was a mess...

      Wow, Robert! First thank you for sharing and watching, but that’s an incredible story too! What a providential breakdown! You have a lot of intimate knowledge of the area; it’s very cool. Those pictures would be interesting to see! Just west of MERRIL the wreck happened looks like. Those hobos picked the wrong train, wow!

    Great Video! I lived in Bieber (Nubieber) from 2005-14 before CTC was installed so its neat seeing it here in the Vid. I actually worked in Tionesta at Glass MTN Mine when i lived in Nubieber. Brings back memories. Thanks for sharing!!

      @@pacificrailproductions5281 Your cover shot of the SB approaching the HWY 299 overpass is indentical to a few shots I took at the same spot!! I lived in Nubieber only a few months when BNSF hit the NSS switch at Bieber that was supposed to be lined for the main but was aligned for the siding causing a bad derailment in my back yard. The local did its work and gave its warrant back stating that the switch was re aligned but they forgot got to
      so the SB hit the switch at 49 mph running into loaded grain cars left by the local. Loudest noise i ever heard!! Switches in TWC territory receveied switch point indicator on the BNSF after that wreck.

      @@billwilliams5786 that’s incredible. I can’t believe the train derailed right there next to your house. I’m glad you weren’t injured and it looks like that was a derailment that caused some positive change.

    one of Pentrex's best videos is the inside gateway cabride video. Neat to see it in the modern day. and interesting that they finally took a part of the line out of dark territory since, when pentrex went there i think the entire line was still dark. That is a problem with gateway, its hard to access a lot of it. in some cases i am sure pentrex had special permission. though they mentioned using fire roads at one point. Odd to see BNSF 5800 out there. As when new it was a coal hauler. and the 7700s and 7600s were the ones out in california. i am glad you got the correct identification of the SD75s....so many people call them all SD75Ms when clearly some are SD75Is.

    • @pacificrailproductions5281
      @pacificrailproductions5281  2 місяці тому

      I appreciate your input there. I’d love to see that Pentrex video. I’ve seen an awesome cab ride from WPs line in the 70s and there were signals on the high line! I assumed it was always CTC, but I think I’m wrong! I wonder if they re-signaled that part because it once had been; maybe it was easier to do because of that?
      Anyway, thanks man for the comment. I’ve got BNSF in the feather river canyon and a little from the high line coming.

    The EMD SD60M, SD60I, SD60MAC, SD70M, SD70I, SD70MAC, SD75M, SD75I, SD80MAC, and the SD90MAC all share the same type of Beautiful EMD Wide Cab style, and if Class 1 Railroad companies ever decided to order freight Cowl Units, I would love to see one with the EMD M/I/MAC style Wide Cab.

    Always enjoy your videos, could you explain what "retainers" mean on the cars, hand brake system? Thanks for your excellent productions.

    • @pacificrailproductions5281
      @pacificrailproductions5281  Місяць тому

      Sure! Retainers are a part of every car’s air brake system. There is a valve that can be turned to make the reservoir of air retain more pressure and thereby make the brakes set up stronger. It is rarely used today, but was necessary when getting heavy tonnage down steep grades. When they are used, each car would require the brakeman to turn the retaining valve handle individually. Then “knock it down” (Place them back in exhaust position) after they were off the hill.

    • @rsmith.182
      @rsmith.182 Місяць тому

      @@pacificrailproductions5281 Thank you for the detailed explanation, sounds like the brakeman got a lot of exercise and it was not much fun in the heat of the day or the cold of the night.
