    I almost wish Aileen didn’t receive the death penalty so we could continue to utilize her case study and elder-developmental experiences, but she seemed to accept or want death regardless - and I can’t fathom what it was like to live in her mind without the use of substances.
    Tragic, tragic backstory; terrifying woman. Thank you as always, Dr. G!

      She was really fractured and damaged - keeping her alive as a case study seems kind of brutal, no? She was actually suffering, even being subjected to interviewers like this guy, who seemed more interested in provoking more suffering than helping her towards any kind of healing.

      @@CreaticityIsLife Oh totally - from an ethics standpoint that’s absolutely out of the question. I think when I said ‘wish’ I meant to infer I don’t necessarily support the death penalty regardless (I am Canadian and it’s pretty cultural), and that we would have her case study de facto if she was given mandatory life in max custody with psychiatric services.
      I’m radical in the sense that I support MAID for people with catastrophic psychiatric dysfunction, if they are giving genuine, non-coercive consent to choose death after all therapeutic methods are exhausted. In a utopian system where MAID was allowed for certain offenders, I believe Aileen would’ve chosen/preferred that regardless of the existence of a death penalty.
      The childhood C-PTSD and psych. dysfunction she lived with is unfathomable. (I’m not wanting to imply what she did was conscionable or warranted in any way)

      He was trying to agitate her so that he’d have a lot of reactionary moments of her so he could show how sociopathic she looked. A lot of people especially women have empathy for her because of her very horrific life and circumstances she lived through. By showing her As angry and crazy the director can control how the viewer will see her- with less compassion for her. As someone in the business that’s what I gather he was trying to achieve.

    • @stevierysie
      @stevierysie Рік тому +18

      @@wotiluv did you see the documentary? Because that’s not at all what the interviewer was doing. He does not believe in the death penalty as a Brit. He believed that she had been raped, as do I in at least 2 of the murders she committed. She was crazy. They are not supposed to execute mentally ill people. What the interviewer was trying to do was get her to admit that she was actually raped as she testified at her trial. If someone is raped and then kills the persons it’s not first degree murder. She would not have been eligible for the death penalty in those cases and it could get her a stay of execution. Maybe look into the documentary, I think it’s on UA-cam.

      @@stevierysie i will look for it thanks I’m now intrigued. I find it hard to watch female killers. I saw the film not the documentary so maybe I have him mixed up with the other filmmaker I guess. But as Dr G pointed out he was asking her questions that were clearly agitating her. I do still think he was trying to get her to show emotions- and her reactions. Regardless what his death penalty beliefs were he was making the film about a female SK. That’s just basic filmmaking 101 - get your subject to interact and show emotions so the viewers can connect and firm opinion.

    Such a horrible life! She was not lying about that guy raping her. She just did not want to live in jail anymore. She was not in her right mind and they NEVER should have executed her. @@drgexplains I am sorry, I should have clarified. The issue I was pointing out was that the state could not execute her for the murders that she was raped. Aileen’s childhood home is literally about 6 houses down from the house I grew up and now live in as a 40 year old adult and I will say that I know for a fact that the things that went on in this neighborhood during the decade prior to when my parents bought this home in the early 1980’s were incredibly messed up and yes, sadly Aileen was one of the children victims of this neighborhood during that time frame. If you research her childhood/youth you will understand what I’m referring to. By the time my parents moved here, thank God.. the people doing these disturbing things were no longer in the neighborhood, thank God. I do believe and know Aileen was severely abused and traumatized and for her I believe this created a perfect storm that turned her into what she eventually became and the acts that she committed.

It's why she turned to prostitution and dropped out of society. The main reason is I don't think she enjoyed killing, rather a means to an end for her inner rage and the money to keep her girlfriend. Well, you can't compare her to others like that. "Bad childhood" is not the same experience for everyone. It's a matter of balancing the level of damage done with the resources available to create resilience to that damage in the life of this one person. She suffered severe, prolonged, and repeated damage with little to no resources for creating resilience. She is a monster, but she was created by severe abuse and absolute lack of love and care. She was not born this way, or she would have been killing a lot more people a lot earlier in life with far less provocation.

    I have no patience with people who wring their hands, agonizing over how horrible her childhood was. The woman shot seven men in cold blood, but these strange people want to anguish about how what happened to her was horrible, but not a word about the horrific crimes she committed.
    These are seven times she murdered in the commission of armed robberies. On top of that, she was a pathological liar who at times blamed others for her offenses (the police, the system, the victims, the victims' families, etc.), but, in a rare moment of candor, she chillingly stated: "I killed those men, robbed them as cold as ice. And I'd do it again, too. There's no chance in keeping me alive or anything, because I'd kill again. I have hate crawling through my system...I am so sick of hearing this 'she's crazy' stuff. I've been evaluated so many times. I'm competent, sane, and I'm trying to tell the truth. I'm one who seriously hates human life and would kill again."

      Except that, in her mind, her life was taken by the brutality she experienced her whole life. She was never helped, never believed, and never protected. Not excusing her murderousness, but I do think her fractured and damaged psyche does perceive her actions as self-defense - that she FINALLY fought back and protected herself because no one else ever did. And I do think society is culpable when we fail to protect children from the kind of abuse she suffered. To blame her for what she turned into is some weak sauce. Even she knew the world needed to be protected from her - she didn't see any other alternative response to living in a world that was so abusive. She was failed over and over again.

    She changed her story multiple times during her period on Death Row, hence Nick, the interviewer probably feeling a bit frustrated and coming across quite argumentative... despite this, he'd built a great relationship with Aileen over the years. She originally claimed self-defence, before changing it to a guilty plea, saying that she had actually killed them all in cold blood. In a later scene, Aileen told Nick (when she thought that the cameras were off) that a lot of the murders were self-defence, but that she had just given up and would rather get it over with and take the death penalty for them all.
    This woman would have had so much potential with the right care and support, but unfortunately she was the product of a completely loveless and selfish world.

    Being a different person every 5 minutes seems a lot more like severe dissociation, possibly DID, rather than psychopathy. Her volatility, especially in the context of a provocative interviewer, seems more like an intense PTSD response. She genuinely has things she wants to say, and she is constantly frustrated and triggered by this interviewer who seems way more invested in confrontation. I am wondering how she would present and come across with an interviewer who was more skillful, one who was actually compassionate and focused on understanding rather than provoking. This honestly feels like psychological abuse by this interviewer.
