I lived in Wichita when BTK committed those murders. The entire community was on high alert for years. Constantly, checking on family/friends several times, everyday.
When BTK was finally caught, I can still picture sitting in front of the TV that Saturday morning fixated on each word, expression, during the Plea Hearing.
What I learned is that we can be right next to someone, not knowing they have a dark vitriol secret.

The level of relief was immeasurable. I lived in the KC area when he was captured but was frequently going to Wichita for family reasons. One parent & sibling on the west side and a grandparent on Edgemoor on the east side. My mom went to school with one of the surviving Oteros in ‘74 and my grandparent was still in her childhood home at the time Rader resurfaced. She was in poor health in ‘05 so we had to frequently stay in that same house with the bedroom windows facing Edgmoor… very little sleep was had. None of my classmates in KC knew anything about it but luckily I had 2 teachers at the time who were also from Wichita so they’d burst into each others’ classrooms any time there was breaking news.

@@Guru-ue2yp his daughter is a f*cking legend. She was the catalyst to the end of his reign of terror, brought peace to two more families than the feds even had on their radar, and continues to sacrifice her own emotional well-being for the sake of not only the general public, but also to lend insight to those who are responsible for putting people like the man who raised her behind bars. One can only hope that they’d have someone like Kerri in their corner if their loved one ever fell victim to such deplorable circumstances.
It’s easy to Monday-morning-quarterback something like this but, because of her participation, she helped to bring peace to literal generations. She George-Washington’ed that apple tree and one-upped him by making damn sure people knew how that tree was planted.

Very interesting insights! I wonder if his contempt was because Mr. Otero did not go on the offensive. Likely, Mr. Otero thought playing along was the best way to keep his family safe, never suspecting that the home invader was there specifically to murder them. Rader’s daughter Kerri said that Rader was contemptuous of people who were not protective and safety conscious, almost as if he blamed victims making themselves “easy targets”. Twisted thinking right there.

I am an empathetic person, and I feel sympathy even for Jeffrey Dahmer, but NOTHING happened in Rader's childhood, he is a diagnosed psychopath, and the fact he can kill 2 children and masturbate afterwards throws away your humanistic argument when it comes to BTK. Shirley Vian vomited, so BTK was probably grossed out for a second and wanted her in a better state so he could kill her in a more sadistic way

@@LordMonstrux I do in fact think he has a human side. If you were to cut his arm, he would bleed. If you were to cut your own arm, you would bleed. If you were to shoot him in the heart, he would die. If someone were to shoot you in the heart, you would die. These traits are human traits so by nature he is human and has a human side. What society doesn't understand is that the term 'human' isn't a title that you have to earn and can be taken away; it is a fact that cannot be changed. So yes, I do see a human side, because I step outside of myself, of my understanding of the world and look at it through their perspective. Having trauma during the childhood is not all that is required for someone to have even a shred of empathy for a serial killer. There is more to the situation than you or any others are aware of or let yourselves see.

I was thinking the contempt he showed when talking about the dog and the dad was because he saw both of them as a nuisance- something to be dealt with or eliminated before he could get to his planned out fantasy. I also wonder if he displays the impatience and need for control in the every day aspects of his life because he lacks the control over his obsessive feelings to kill. So like, he exerts an excessive amount of control over the little things. 🤷🏼‍♀️

@jessieo7953, I’ve seen his daughter give many interviews. She states that he had pretty rigid rules to follow inside their house. The kids shoes had to go in a certain place when they came into the house. They just couldn’t kick them off just anywhere. She said that there was one specific chair that only he sat in at the dinner table. She said that they had some messy closets in the house and everyone knew not to be them digging around or even straightening them up. She said that her dads authority in the house was absolute and everyone knew not to buck it.

When he had the fantasy the dog and Mr. Otero were not there, so when the time came for Rader to execute his plan the fantasy was put on hold to deal with the inconvenience. He was really set on Josephine hence why he took her to the basement, away from everyone else so he could be alone with her. If his fantasy went properly it would have been her and him alone. Unplanned events like this are a loss of control to him which shatters the fantasy. This can also be seen with the murder of Kathryn Bright; Rader did not anticipate her brother Kevin being there so he had to adapt to assert control which ultimately did not give him the full satisfaction he needed.

Also, his family convinced him to accept the plea deal which required confession to spare them a trial, & to his credit he did but likely not entirely willingly. Which also might explain his current obfuscation w/ LE regarding the two murders they’ve recently questioned him about. Even in his confession, he was in control of what he shared & how.

Regarding ASPD, all psychopaths are sociopaths but not all sociopaths are psychopaths. Psychopaths are characterized by lack of empathy and control; with how Rader explains his crimes and his body language we can see he has a lot of control over himself and needs it for his crimes. Looking also at his work life, he had stable jobs and was able to maintain a cover image, most sociopaths have a hard time keeping one job so every few months they have another job. In a way Rader could be considered a narcissist, he does want admiration and fame for his crimes but in his trial we don't see too much of a grandiose personality as we do with Bundy in his trial. Rader, as mentioned, has a very obsessive personality in regards to other's actions and how he can control them, narcissists usually focus on themselves, everything they do is to make themselves look better, they don't care about anyone else. While, yes, narcissists do get gratification out of the humiliation and manipulation of others, they typically do it to boost their ego since they, deep down, feel so lowly about themselves; in this regard, Rader seems to be very sure of himself.

Making Mr. Otero more comfortable because he had a cracked rib, despite the fact Rader _was going to murder him_ always gets me. It's like Rader is reducing the severity of his crimes, or that he, BTK, was magnanimous enough to allow a victim a small comfort...before killing them via strangulation.
    The dichotomy is striking.

This is also seen with how he tried to keep Josephine calm while he was killing her parents, as an 11 year old girl witnessing her parents being killed it is surely a frightening experience, yet Rader tried to reassure her by telling her that her parents were just sleeping. From a young age he aspired to be a serial killer, yet when he became one he did not think the title fit. Another interesting aspect is that he considered his crimes to be of a lower sexual nature, he believed he was better than some of the other sexual killers because he did not rape them as the others did. In a way he was trying to make himself feel better about what he was doing by minimizing his crimes.

He’s trying to manipulate the judge and onlookers into believing he has empathy, humanity, compassion and a conscience…when in actuality, he’s a brutal, cold, narcissistic and calculated serial murderer, very matter of fact about his crimes, and is actually a psychopath incapable of such emotions towards his victims. And any acts of “kindness” he showed to his victims were merely tools of control, in order to manipulate them (like he’s trying to manipulate the judge) into compliance, until the moment he unalives them. Just Horrific…and truly cruel psychological manipulation.

The difference between the 1st set of clips and the last at the jail are very noticeable. I'm wondering if we saw the judge talking with him, he would be making the same slow movements BTK is doing. The officers talking with him at the jail were possibly friendly and peppy, therefore he he mirrored them to fit in. He has anti-social behaviors, so he doesn't care about actually "fitting in" but is only doing so in attempt to maintain control of the situation.

A better term might be "shame." He is ashamed--as he should be. He knew better somewhere, but, throughout his life, did not seek help from others, a psychologist or counselor, for instance; he sought nothing but his own escalating, grandiose self-gratification. He is embarrassed and should be. He knows he did not treat others the way he would like to have been treated. He knows human beings have certain standards of caring behavior. He had a child, for heaven's sake!! If ever there was a candidate deserving the death penalty, this is one. Presently, I am sure he remains thrilled with being seen as notorious. Now he lives in infamy.

    FASCINATING insight!!!
Thank you! I’ve watched this three times already.
The need for control, the need to give all the details or only as many as he wants to give…flipping fascinating!! The fingers/digital adapter, aggressively swishing the water-those two things are so out of his observed controlled baseline that it’s SCARY. His manual dexterity, he’s one unsettling psychopath.
Once again, his irises are uneven-one is significantly lower than the other. What’s up with that. I’d really enjoy hearing your opinion on this observation. Japanese call it Sanpaku eyes. I first noticed it in Christine Papin and subsequently have observed it often in people arrested for various murders/serial killers. Is it a datapoint or merely coincidence?

Good question because it essentially looks the same. A great deal of it is context. In other words, what they are discussing. Many serial killers do that when they talk about their victims, so it stands to reason it is more likely excitement.
