- Lockdown mods! I keep spending and this time I got a Scotts steering stabilizer. They have a kit for the T7 now and you can install it yourself. Here is a "how to" video for you. I did it twice so you only have to do it once ;)
Remember to visit my shop if you have a T7 or just want a sticker: sasmcshop.squa...
I bought the stabilizer from Torimoto: torimoto.com.au/
Tori is a fellow youtuber. We floggers need to stick together ;)
I liked the video, except what you do with tightening the castle nuts. The 1st castle nut has a 3 step tightening (1st to 75 Nm, 2nd loosen 180 degrees, 3rd to 7 Nm). The 2nd castle nut just needs to be finger tight. Also look for "steering nut wrench", that gives you something that you can attach to your torque wrench and tighten the castle nuts to spec.
Looks mint Brendon! Nice clean job on the install, and very informative for those that haven't installed a damper before. Let us know how it feels riding when you get a chance.
Hello from Albuquerque, New Mexico deep in the desert! Loved your video and made my installation so easy. Went out to the desert in some sandy areas and sketchy stuff... the Scott's Steering Stabilize worked great and was a tremendous help! THANKS so much for your video and help.
next to suspension thats hands down the best money you can spend on your bike, i love it on lose rocky climbs and in rocky river crossing , just keep the bike tracking in straight line with very little effort.you wont regret that purchase
Can you please tell my wife that ;) Thanks
I believe Tori nailed the correct pronunciation for the said accessory! Damper
Cheers fella, nice work✌️
I believe the Scotts unit to be the best version on the market due to the way it functions. Even if you have multiple bikes you only need one damper and mount it up to various submounts as required. I was fortunate to get mine through an America friend at work when the exchange rate was $1.10 in the Aussie's favour. Your going to love its ability to stop the fatigue when grinding through deep sand. Enjoy 👍🏻
Great addition, mine has saved me from going down many times. Don't be afraid of adjusting it from the stock setting. It took me 3 years and someone riding my bike and telling me it was too stiff to finally adjust it to where it isn't interfering with my riding anymore.
i run 0-1 on my dr. doesn't need much
Great install video, very detailed! I'll be looking forward to your thoughts on it after some good use!
Another awesome Nerb how-to vid mate.
Something I don't understand though, is why would you have 2 thumbs down? We do vids to entertain or help others and people still thumb them down.
Oh well, cant please them all mate. Cheers
Someone always has a reason. I didnt use a torque wrench, its a yamaha not a ktm, its a ktm not a yamaha, my arms are hairy... there's always someone that is having an off day. To be honest, I didnt even know if there was thumbs up or down till you told me! Haha.
@@Nerb1 Imagine how many thumb ups you would get if you shaved your arms! haha
@@bazza8947 But my arms never get sunburned! The advantages outweigh the disadvantages! hahaha
Great video Brendon. Explained each step and clear video on the process, well done. Looking forward to any feedback on the damper.
Thanks mate. Will install mine tomorrow. Great and detailed instruction clip!👍🍻
Thanks Jester. Im glad you liked it.
thank you for this video. I finally got my kit from scotts for my t7
Great video mate, very well done. If we ever get out of lockdown it will interesting to see how the bike goes with the new suspension and steering stabiliser.
Thanks for sharing.Look forward to a Little Desert review🙂...or the kids backyard sandpit at this lockdown rate.😏
Neat, good do clear video. I’ve been thinking of installing one of these on my DR. Look forward to the follow up 👍
Great video! I think I will also buy this and mount it myself
Even seen Loctite, blue in a red container and red in a blue container, with swapped labels.
Excellent instructional video Nerb!
Well done! 👍😁
Thanks Bob.
Great video Brendan. A word of warning, the torque spec for the center nut on top is very high, can't remember exactly what it is, but mine came lose from factory, and it's difficult to do back up out on the trail. So make sure it's bloody tight..I'll post the torque when I get home. 98ftlb comes to mind .
110lbft or 148Nm. Yes... very tight!
Thanks Brendon. Frustrating times in lock down. Scotts steering stabilisers are top quality bits of kit. They definitely take away the twitchy uneasiness on long straights when punching away the K's. I have found they can mess with your head stem tension though - and give some movement within the head stem after long hard rock rides. More to do with the head stem dust cap they supply. If you keep a feel for movement in your head stem it its easy to tune it a bit and stop any bearing damage. I have tried different O rings etc - nothing hard to work out, just sharing the info. 100% worth the $. robust and easy to use. I have mine set between 2 to 7 for single track riding and then stiffen it right up when on open road. Its easy to forget you spent real money on this bit of fruit until you are sitting on a dollar twenty kilometers p/h and then turn the dial clockwise a bit and everything settles down just nicely.... worth every cent. Hope you are back on the road soon and crossing those unrestricted colonial map lines just like the old days
Noted, and thanks very much. Cant wait to get back out there.
Thanks for sharing, this was very useful. Can you do a review on how to use it, what does the nobs do? And when to runt them depending what kind of road your on. Thanks in advance. Kind regards.
They sell these on ali Express quite cheap has anyone fitted one.i think the chinese damper you dont have to remove the head nut they bolt on the tank mount.
Hey! Now that you had the stabilizer (Dampenerb1?) on for a while. Did it save you? Kept you in control? I am about to spend the pile of cash they want for it. Thanks! /Rob
Hey Rob. I have hit a few rocky sections at speed and I think it definitely helps. I have not yet worked out how much to turn it up and down yet, so it is still a guessing game for me.
Is it worth AU$900.... not sure... but it sure looks good!
@@Nerb1 Thanks! Well, at least we have the "Looking good" thing and that's not bad :)
Hi Brendon can you share your settings for the Scotts Damper or are you running the factory settings?
Should be interesting to see what kind of bike you end up with if these lockdowns keep happening!
yes you'll love it (steering damper) especially on those Dune crossings where you get the wiggle at the top!! You'll now just cruise along on the line you pick!! ;)
Good work I’ve thought about putting a steering damper on my T7 but is the cost worth it I don’t know if it helps in sand but may help in rocky terrain, your comments would be appreciated.
I'll let you know in a few months!
Nice video learnt a lot 👍
Glad it was helpful!
Should have gone with the Australian-made MSC Moto Steering Damper!
Can you do a video on wiring aux lights next kthxbai 😘
Silly question but why didn’t they just make the the stabiliser pin in two halves to save having to take all of the triple clamp off.
I dont know. Maybe a strength thing? It would make it simpler!
Nice ! interested to see your evaluation when you get back out there. Question without notice (sorry) do you have a model number for the RHK handguards or are they just generic . Cheers
They are the wrap MX model.
Hey Nerb, Good job. Funnily enough that is on my list to do on Friday. I have the Scotts Dampner, but I bought the Vanasche base+riser. Luckily for me the mounting peg mounts to my frame and I don't have to worry about removing the triple etc... Hopefully mine will be even more straight forward. Now you need to a video on tuning it... high speed dampening vs low speed dampening vs end adjustments. :-)
Yeah, I have to learn that stuff now. My first ever adjustable stabilizer.
@@Nerb1 Excellent... well I like the way your mind works, so when you work it out... just tell me the answer ;-)
Great install videos, I dont have a T7 but I just like hanging out in the garage with ya lol, I got a good ol DRZ so I never have to work on it haha jk Im actually just finding new things falling off it cause vibrates like no tommorow, never dies though
Haha... there is no bike in existence that doesnt require some sort of TLC.... and it there is one, dont buy it! Working on the bike is better that se..... well, almost.
What fork caps have you installed- they look awesome?
Why didn’t you buy the MSC Moto damper? Have done two epic rides Mumbai to London and LA to Santiago Chile. Support Australian companies that provide better tech.
i got one for my ktm i love it. hightly recommed. but u use it on road remeber to put on soft or u will brake it WOPS lesson learnt
So we need an update on this after riding it!!!! Is it needed? Felt bike more stable?
I rode my friends orange bike with one. That thing just went straight, T7 it twitchy compared to his. I’m used to it but I wonder if this helps.
I havnt ridden it yet. The state is still in lockdown amongst some other issues. Sorry.
What clutch and brake levers are yours? Great video!
They are just the cheap chinese ebay short levers. I love them.
@@Nerb1 Thanks for the information. I ordered a Scott's kit just like you installed in the video so will be installing when I receive it.
@@Nerb1 I noticed yours could rotate up so they don't break but I don't see any like that on Ebay. ?
@@kenackerson7007 No, mine dont rotate up. This is the actual one I got: www.ebay.com.au/itm/184364923915
nothing like a long highway run and forgetting the dampener is set very stiff, try to chuck a u turn and cant turn the bike :P
Im sure it will happen to me!
Drill hole in stem nut and lockwire it to hole in headset
Does it help with the 95-120mph wobble? After going up a tooth on my countershaft sprocket I discovered a wobble SOMETIMES at high speed and am wondering if this helps.
No it doesnt. The wobble (that all adventure bikes seem to have) is too slow for the damper to do anything for.
I'm surprised you didn't have one on the 1190 🙂
Great video
Looks brilliant but adding more and more weight to your bike haha 😂
I’ve done the same 😆👍👍👍
Its a disease!
I was surprised to see how far down your forks are in the triple clamps. Is that intentional ? Because I think std is 7mm. Great video nonetheless. Food for thought.
Yes, they are a bit low. I was trying to gain 7mm ground clearance!
(jk)
I see one part had a colour change. Is she selling anti lockdown cloaking devices? My bike needs one
Yeah, I powdercoated it. I like it.
Should make Little Desert a little easier now.
That will be very interesting. Hopefully you are there to see first hand!
@@Nerb1 Ill wait for the invite ;)
I distinctly heard your wrist go ‘Dink’ at 14:17 …. Torque value achieved. BTW? Have you shaved your fingers 😂
ha, not recently!
@@Nerb1 Ha! :) The Scott’s large (adjustment) knob is a great addition too for on the fly changes as the little pointer type can be hard to adjust in small increments ‘up or down’ with gloves on. Mrs Nerb will be happy to know that this upgrade is a 100% safety measure. Makes a huge difference riding sand and rocky (snotty) terrain!
Im looking forward to testing it!
Too bad they didn't install these at the factory because this is way too much work for a steering dampener. Although it is an excellent bit of kit to have and it is much better than a bar type stabilizer.
Great video but don't you need to re fit the big washers under the new handlebar clamps you fitted? You also need to buy a torque wrench.
I have a torque wrench... I just need to use it!
The scotts manual said to reinstall the stock washers under the perch. The bigger ones that go under the nylock nuts dont fit under the perch. I think I got it right.
@@Nerb1 I thought the reason for the big washers underneath were to stop the bolts pulling the rubber mounts out of the the top triple clamp?
"That pressure of tapping" Should have marked it maybe...?
Im making a proper tool for it, so I can actually torque it. 75Nm with the tool (which is not 75Nm on the nut). Maybe a follow up video on this.
I lied! It is 75Nm, then loosen and reset to 7Nm. I will definitely redo that!
Quarantine is expensive :-)
Yes and no.... with no outings like movies or holidays, we save a fair bit... only fair that I spend it on the bike right?
Good one ☕☕
You’ll be broke by time we can ride again 😵💫
Spend that cash! You used to ride your bikes stock standard. Getting soft? Haha
I know! Is it a blight on modern bikes or old age? Haha
Your bike needs a wash and polish if you are still looking for something to do during lock down Nerb. :)
Ughh... dont remind me!
@@Nerb1 Haha Its satisfying in the end.
Are you sure that T7 is really a good bike? Every and each enthusiast changes something there: suspensions, levels, grips, protections, windshield and so forth...
Thats what make us enthusiasts and not just commuters. The bike is perfectly fine in stock form, but unfortunately people are all different and everyone wants it perfect for them. A bike company cannot make an individual bike for every fussy prick. If you have never modified a bike, you would not modify the T7, you would just ride it stock.... and love it ;)
Dampener or Damper, Breadend? Lol
haha. I used the terms interchangeably.... the manual says damper, i think it is a dampener as it dampens the steering, but I type stabilizer because i dont know which one to use! Haha
@@Nerb1 Maybe you best ask Mrs Nerb?
@@Nerb1 Hahahahaha. Uh oh. Stabilizer or stabiliser...
@Bob Sacamano - "Damping" and "to damp" have been used for centuries by physicists to describe the lessening of oscillation by absorption of its energy. "Dampening" has crept into automotive discussions, probably by participants without formal education in science. But it always reminds me of ironing my Boy Scout uniform. :-)
Grouse!
