As a former casino worker, I just want to point out that there's a really cool attention to detail in Luigi's games. Notice how he turns his hands upside down for a moment whenever he touches the cards or chips. This is called "clearing your hands", and is required by the casino in case the dealer is ever accused of rigging the game (since it proves to the camera they aren't palming anything). Just thought I'd mention :)
@@Dashiell777 I guess I was a bit of a purist, I'll always prefer the original Super Mario 64 for being a bit more focused and tightly designed than 64 DS. I also bought a used copy back in the day from someone who apparently 100%-ed Super Mario 64 DS, so that may also have something to do with it if someone already beat the game for me and didn't delete their save file before selling it.
One thing that stood out to me while watching this is that a surprising number of these minigames use coins... And Goomba had a point when he said the gambling isn't as satisfying because it's not real money... What if the minigames acted more like an arcade? What if you could use the minigame coins to buy toys and posters to kit out Peach's Rec Room? Imagine every few minutes, a different set of minigames would get bonus time, and you could unlock extra coins from playing them. And then after you collect a bunch of coins from various games, you go to the Luigi section to gamble them all away... or hit the jackpot and buy that lifesized King Bob-omb statue you've been saving up for! Maybe you could also buy various costumes a la Super Mario Odyssey. If Super Mario 64 is ever remade again, turning the Rec Room into a full-on arcade would be amazing! And maybe they could do even more! You unlock the minigames from catching rabbits throughout the castle, but what if rabbits would occasionally show up within levels as well? And some rabbits could appear at random and they'd give you extra coins(tokens) to spend. I think there's a lot of potential behind the minigames concept that could be revisited.
This is a good assessment. However, I'd posit that it's hard to make it through the Goomba's videos because he's way too british sounding. That's an objective fact.
This sounds like a brilliant addition if they decide to remaster Super Mario 64 DS for a modern console. It sounds almost like the souvenirs from Super Mario Odyssey!
I knew going in that Picture Poker would be number one. I spent HOURS playing it. The best thing was it always saved your coins so you could go back whenever and continue playing.
I don't know if Super Mario 64 DS has this or if it's just exclusive to the New Super Mario Bros. DS Minigames, but I remember you could play minigames with other players via DS Download Play or something, and there were new brand new minigames or minigames that completely changed structure, such as Loves Me?, which is EXTREMELY different there. With multiplayer, you and other players take turns plucking out up to 3 petals, trying to get a "Loves Me!" for points, and avoiding "Loves Me Not..." that will subtract points from you. It goes from a relaxing albeit silly "game" to intense mindgames.
Yeah, it's a bullet hell after all. The whole idea of those is that your ship has a core and the rest of the sprite is immune. (Reimu's ribbon in Touhou for instance)
I remember discovering that, if you press and hold your stylus and keep tapping with your other finger, the DS's touch screen would read it as you sliding your stylus across the screen to where your finger was. I cheesed so many Hide and Boo Seek games with that.
Fun fact, that's because the DS used a "resistive touchscreen" (which functions based on pressing power) as opposed to the "capacitive touchscreen" (which detects things that can conduct electricity) that most modern touchscreens use
Regarding bingo ball, you can actually get even more points by getting a perfect score without using up all the balls since each ball left rewards you with extra points
The fact that they were willing to add these mini games to the remakes is nice attention to detail, even if you have to hunt down so many rabbits as every character just to unlock them

The strategy for Pair-a-Gone is twofold: look for matches that make other matches possible, and look for matches that would be made impossible by other moves. The solitaire (or patience) card game Monte Carlo is basically the same as Pair-a-Gone except that Monte Carlo lets you make as many matches as you can find before you condense the cards dealt to the table and deal more. I used to go to the casino a lot when I was younger. I mostly played roulette or blackjack but I did occasionally play the slots and even in the early 2000s they had some pretty cool slot machines that had little mini games and all sorts of stuff. I remember one where the story was you were trying to break in to a vault and there was mini games in which you could "win" numbers to the combination and then if you got them all you were awarded a bonus. If I recall correctly the seat even vibrated and stuff when the vault started to open. They could have had a LCD screen on the top, had mini games where Mario would auto walk through stages and pressing a button would make him jump. Maybe get bonuses for hitting blocks or killing enemies. Bonus is over when you die or finish the stage. Have multiple bonus stages all with different themes from the NES game. even had the bonus go through the stages as if you were playing a game, each bonus getting progressively harder until it re-starts. Dying would send you back to the first bonus while completing each one would make the next bonus progress. But that seems a little too involved considering what we actually got. It wouldn't surprise me if they had a bunch of interns knock these mini games out, lmfao.

A little tip with the trampoline minigames: Smaller trampolines will actually bounce Mario higher. It gives an advantage for giving Mario a more difficult target to bounce on, making it easier if you strategize with your sizing. Edit: Congrats to Picture Poker! One of my personal favorites too.
I have not clicked on a video this quick for a looong time.. Just a minute after it came out. I realize now that Super Mario 64 DS probably has an 18 year old rating in 2024 since it features gambling in its game.

I remember some of the minigames having multiplayer, “Loves Me” being one of them
Been a while since I watched you. Glad you’re still active and posting
You included Pokemon Stadium music and it makes ne want a Pokemon Stadium series minigame tier list!
I used to play the hell of the bob-omb slingshot game as a kid if that doesn't win I am squishing one goomba
2nd place is good enough good job goomba you saved the life of one goomba
I remember playing that Bob Omb Minigame for hours!
But I think my personal favourite Minigame is the Bob Omb Survival game from NSMB 🎉
Great Video!
The poker minigames on New Super Mario Bros were great, we used to play that with the lads all the time it was great! The music from it never left me
These mini games rotted my brain during long car rides home as a kid. Great video!
I spent A LOT of time in Picture Poker, but Wanted, Trampoline Time and then Sort 'n Explode are really really excellent too.
20:14 jesus christ i love luigi minigames and i got a fun story about it
Basicly on a school trip everyone in the bus was having a bad time and we're doing a lot of differents things in an attempt to keep us occupied or having fun but everyone suffered even 2 people shat themself
the only exception of people having fun were me and my neighboor cus we would just play poker with luigi we even pulled snacks in the bus (when we weren't supposed to) to get in the mood of being at a casino and having fun
we even had people envying us cus of the levels of comfortable we put ourselves in
this happened in 2019 and i was 15 and my neighboor 16
This is a gift from the heaven!
Lonely goomba you delivered a good vid
Man the innuendos in Trampoline Time's description are insane!
I could play that Luigi Poker game for-fucking-ever. It's so addicting.
I learned the basics of how to play Poker thanks to Luigi.
Fun fact:
For the Mario ring game, if you get far enough, A FIFTH MARIO APPEARS ON THE SCREEN.
I know Wario’s slow af in this game, but man am I just glad to be able to play as him in it lol
One of my favorite games of all time.
Congrats on 200k subs!!
I have not clicked on a video this quick for a looong time.. Just a minute after it came out.
I realize now that Super Mario 64 DS probably has an 18 year old rating in 2024 since it features gambling in its game.
My favorite thing to happen in "loves me?" is a random chance for all the petals to fall off when you pluck the first one, instant fail!
I greatly enjoy your videos, lonesome Goomba. Please continue making them.
