Was thinking the same thing. I just got through the scarecrow one and so much right so much wrong. I can't wait until their part 2 review. I really hope they revisit this video once they have.
KIND OF SPOILERS FOR PART 2: honestly, that theory about madame morrible teaching glinda a little bit of weather magic and that’s how she’s able to make it snow in the wizard of oz is something that’s fully not answered in wicked at all and is kind of an amazing theory!! accepting that as head canon now!
I could have sworn it was Morrible who created the tornado, and that Glinda calls her on it late in Act 2. Wasn’t there an ironic echo of “I hope you prove me otherwise” in there? Of course, that was in a live show I saw a long time ago… might not have been in every performance.
@noahhathaway9435 not sure which it is, book or musical but you're right in one of them... also pretty sure in the movie MM calls the storm to stop Elphie and that's the storm that brings Dorothy. I remember in the books there's a long time between her fleeing the Emerald City and the arrival of Dorothy. Personal head cannon after movie is that Fierro is a burnt out Activist who has become a fatality. "Nothing matters so knowing nothing matters it's just life so keep dancing through." Galinda is the privileged who doesn't delve deeper into the plight around her because it doesn't affect her and trying is exhausting... Elphie cares because she sympathizes with the Animals, and her activism reignites the spark in Fierro but he doesn't have it in him anymore to move towards any cause on his own.
NOT A WICKED SPOILER: As someone who doesn’t know the second half of wicked, The slippers were not ruby in the original Wizard of Oz story but became so for the film so they could be more colorful
Yeah, they changed it to red for the Wizard of Oz movie because it looked way better in Technicolor. Idk if this is spoilers, but Wicked the Broadway show wasn't allowed to use stuff from the movie, only the book. I did really like the little nod to the ruby slippers in Popular though
OK the one thing we do know from part 1 is that the shoes are silver. If you watch Dorothy you will notice that they stay silver. So in part 2 we know Elphaba makes them magic so Nessa can walk. The one thing I am dying to see is how they will make the actress actually walk since she is actually a wheelchair user in real life. I think also in part 2 that they may show more of Nessa and how she became the wicked witch since it was just a quick part of the musical Wicked. I love how J doesn't have a clue on the musical and hes really close with all his theories of what will happen.
MGM owns the copyright to the ruby slippers. Other aspects are public domain. Disney paid MGM for the rights to use ruby slippers for The Wiz. Paramount didn't want to pay for that. They were happy to keep it silver like the original. The green color of the witch was also from the movie, not the book. Not sure why MGM has never been able to enforce that copyright. To the best of my knowledge, Paramount isn't paying for that. They are using a different shade, but it still seems pretty obviously to be a story element from MGM's film, so I don't really get why it's different from the slipper color.
I will say, Act 1 definitely sets up a lot of Act 2. And with how J has made a living on spotting things like this, it's not unexpected that he'd pick up on a lot of the setup. I also find it interesting what aspects of Act 2 were set up but J just has completely no clue there's a full domino track awaiting him.
Not strictly relevant, but IMO one of the most bizarre scenes in "Canon" is in "The Tin Woodman of Oz," when he visits the Tinsmith who put him together, and finds his severed "meat" head in a cupboard, still alive (because no one can die in Oz) and capable of speaking. It sets up "a most ingenious paradox," actually -- How can both the tin and flesh versions of the same man co-exist?? (This conundrum is explored in depth in the non-canonical book, "Forever in Oz" by Melody Grandy.)
He’s only ever called tin woodman in the novel, it’s evident he has only seen the movie and doesn’t know about the book ergo he doesn’t know his name is tin woodman
Haven’t seen the musical but I feel like Boq being the tinman is a pretty safe bet. Boq’s last name is woodsman and he’s reading “how to fell a tree” in the library. And for Fiyero Elphaba also tells him to “get stuffed” when they first met so I feel like that’s more supporting evidence for that
@@jessbrannon_actor tbf I have watched the bootleg of the movie like 5 times and watched it in the theater twice so far 😂 I’ve had way more opportunities to see the book than most people
NO SPOILERS I did want to answer your question about the name "Oz". In the books, "Oz" is the name of a magical land that contains four nations: Munchkinland, Quadling Country (where Glinda rules), Winkie Country (where the Wicked Witch of the West rules), and Gillikin Country (where an unnamed Good Witch of the North rules). In the center of Oz where these four regions all intersect, lies the Emerald City. For generations, the Royal Family of Oz took the name "Oz" or "Ozma" upon their coronation. Then there was some political turmoil which I won't go into here, but during this period the Wizard shows up. His birth name is Oscar Zoroaster Phadrig Isaac Norman Henkle Emmannuel Ambroise Diggs. But he always went by his first two initials "O. Z.", which he painted on the side of his balloon. When he arrived in Oz people saw the letters and assumed he was associated with the royal family, an assumption he took advantage of to secure a position as ruler. (How much responsibility he had for deposing the rightful heir to the throne depends of whose version of events you believe.)
Also it's just kinda common for rich people who are like Dukes or Earls or whatever to be called by the place name. Eg in Bridgerton the Duke of Hastings is just called Hastings by most people.
I think most of the theories are on point. The reason you could be wrong is you are trying to connect Wicked to the Wizard of Oz as a canon timeline of events. You have to understand; what Wicked is trying to portray is not just what happened in the past but also convey that the story in the Wizard of Oz movie is a false narrative designed to make Elphaba look and seem wicked.
It's not necessarily to show that the original story is a warped version of events, but more to ponder what turns someone wicked in the first place. Edit: Also, I want to point out that this isn't just my personal interpretation, but the author of the book's reason for writing it.
Yeah it's clear the intermission is intended to be 15 minutes and not a year. They plant a lot of obvious hints in the first act. You just don't have time to work them all out before Act 2 is started up. So they feel like reveals, but reveals you would have put together if given even one night between Act 1 & 2.
Why is it hitting me now that there was a drought and Madame Morrible who can control the weather didn't think to make it rain? Or try and teach multiple people so they can all work together?
@@EveryDayALittleDeath Remember they are taking more details out of the original book, and Madame Morrible got up to some nasty stuff in the book. I'm also hoping that they write in Elphaba's and Fiyero's son Liir into the second part of the movie.
@@robertgronewold3326 SPOILERS FOR THE MUSICAL AND BOOK They can't take that much from the original book and keep the PG rating, though. And they can't add Liir in without doing a significant time skip after As Long As You're Mine. Also, unless we learn more about Morrible in the later books (which is possible, I never read them) Morrible is a very enigmatic figure in the OG Wicked book, rather than the outright villain she is in the musical. Also way to spoil that Elphaba and Fiyero get together for the movie-only folks. Come on man.
"Every good deed is met with some kind of unfair backlash." One might even say every act of charity is met with disdain from the general populace. (stares at camera)
So I’m also not going to read the comments, but I’m another person who hasn’t seen the musical. I found it funny that he says Boq as the Tin Man isn’t as obvious as Fiyero as the Scarecrow because once I realized they were introducing Dorothy’s companions (which I clocked when Fiyero started talking about being brainless) I started seeing all the hints for Boq. I mean, his last name is Woodsman. He talks about how he can’t stop crying (Tin Man was always rusting because of that) and the red handkerchief he tries to give Galinda ends up in his pocket over his heart. I’m assuming Nessa Rose ends up doing something (either on purpose or by accident) out of jealousy at his love for Glinda. I also liked that the movie had Fiyero unaffected by the poppies because the Scarecrow is immune to the poppies in the wizard of oz.
No spoilers: As someone who has seen the show MULTIPLE times! This is so interesting to see your theories on part 2! This show is one of my favs and I can’t wait to see some of my fav songs and scenes in part 2!!! You’re going to LOVE it!
Agreed. Wicked is my favourite musical. Iv seen it 4 times. 3 in London and once on tour. I soooo want to see it on Broadway (whatever the cost I don’t care). I saw the movie in cinema the other week and cannot wait for part 2. Agreed it is soooo fun to see what peoples theories are for those who haven’t seen the musical on stage.
@@abbyc6283In the musical, he wasn’t affected by Elphaba’s magic in that scene either. What was different is the type of magic she used. In the musical, it seemed like some sort of spell to slow down/stop time or distract everyone, but in was causing the poppy flowers to levitate and put everyone to sleep (except for Fiyero). I do agree with you though and I loved the change as I think the poppies were way more cinematic and symbolic for multiple reasons!
"Every good deed is met with some unfair backlash" is cracking me up! Way to almost get a direct song title from act 2! I need him to react to this next year! Like its so close!
As someone who has seen the stage play, this makes me happy. It's like hearing someone talk about/theorize about a book series you've read before. The smile this is bringing me 🥹
So what are y’all doing during the year long intermission? I’m getting a snack, using the restroom, reading all four Wicked books again, reading the 15 original books by L. Frank Baum, maybe seeing the play again (or trying to track down a copy of the play at the New York Public Library), watching the 1930’s Wizard of Oz again, watching the Wiz (original and live NBC version again), listening to the soundtrack again (and again and again), getting the movie on DVD, buying my ticket for part two, getting another snack, and going to bathroom one last time before the show starts.
That's the thing with good forshadowing. If you pick up on it, you know exactly what's going to happen. The drive to keep going comes from wanting to see how it gets there. Storywriting 101
Impressive. I love the Fiero theory, even the part he got wrong. My heart sank, because it's so much more heartbreaking (her protection spell going horribly wrong) but also so much more lovely (them actually being in love and together at the end) than what he thought ❤️
@@myladynoir00 agree. Obviously it’s not what happens here, but cursing those who wronged her to a brainless or heartless existence would be perfectly in character for a far less sympathetic Wicked Witch in a different retelling of the Oz stories.
Important to add the ruby slipper are still under copywrite the show got permission to use them as it's considered a different medium but the movie couldn't get to same permission.
SPOILERS FOR PART 2: i just keep screaming at my screen “YOU’RE SO CLOSE, J!!!” like with the fiyero theory, it’s like “right on the money, right on the money, right on the money, anddddd you lost it.” elphaba turned him into the scarecrow to PROTECT him, not punish him. and the tornado theory, like YES! madame morrible DID create the tornado! but elphaba didn’t take hold of it, madame morrible created it specifically to kill nessa. and as for the slippers, i want to tell him so badly that they’re not going to turn ruby!! they’re silver cuz that’s how they originally looked in the 1900 novel. and that’s not even a spoiler for part 2 so i want him to know that so badly but i know he’s not gonna read these comments so it’s irrelevant😂😂😂
@@duncann_donutss That was pretty much my reaction watching this video. Though I do think his theory on how Elphie would turn Fiyero into the Scarecrow is an interesting one in its own way, and in a different Wizard of Oz retelling, I could totally see it being something the Wicked Witch would do.
Oh this was such a fun watch; seeing what he's got right and what he's got wrong. I absolutely love the theory that Elphie would plant the poppies for Dr Dillamond. Especially since that was explored a bit more in the film. I love that that's how she and Fiyero managed to escape the classroom with the Lion cub. They did the right thing not trying to recreate the students flying that happens on stage and using the poppies instead.
As someone who was addicted to this channel years ago, I never guessed I'd come back to J's mustache and him wearing a "I am Kenough" sweater. Am I mad about it? Absolutely not.
Actually you’re spot on about some things and totally off about others. I won’t spoil it. As someone who absolutely loved the musical I was very nervous about this movie adaptation, but they totally pulled it off. I do think the 2nd movie might have some pacing issues because all the hits are in the first act. I wonder what they’ll do with it
"all the hits are in the first act". Are you SURE about that? I mean, "for good" and "no good deed" are both act 2. As for the pacing issues, i almost think you have it backwards. Remember that they are ADDING screen time, and that act 2 of the musical can feel a bit rushed in its own right, what with the amount of referential material to the wizard of oz also clashing with copyright issues of being unable to rehash the movie... I entirely expect to get a bit more of the political commentary that was expanded in part 1 and more details about the victim of the house. We also have potential for a LOT more than that, especially with the special effects to handle the final twist that the musical presents, and possibly even better foreshadowing to the reveal, like how the lie spreads and became believe-able outside of "the deity of our would confirms it!"
Since we saw Dorothy’s feet in silver slippers at the beginning of the movie, I doubt they are gonna change the colour. I think they are gonna stick with silver. Also in the Wizard of Oz books, the wizard’s name is Oscar Zoroaster Phadrig Isaac Norman Henkle Emmannuel Ambroise Diggs but he went by his first 2 initials. Pure coincidence.
Sweet Oz! I knew his name was Oscar Diggs, but had no idea about those way-too-many middle names EDIT: just got back from seeing the movie for the second time - when they’re in the attic during Defying Gravity, we see a poster with a picture of the Wizard, and “Oscar Diggs” written behind him. (Presumably it’s meant to be from when he was in Kansas or Omaha or wherever he’s from)
The only two films that connect in an actual timeline are The Wizard of Oz and Return to Oz, because in both Dorothy wears the Ruby Slippers. I think that Wicked Part 2 will start with the rest of Act 2 from the Broadway Musical, but then the final half of the film will be the classic Wizard of Oz storyline, more closely following the book, who else will they make it into another 3 hour movie? The only prequel film that fits the original classic Wizard of Oz film, is Oz the Great and Powerful.
the last half of Part 2 being more Wizard of Oz focused is interesting, because turning Act II as is into three hours seems insane. But at the same time they did that with Part 1, even though they added nothing. Some moments were expanded or reworked, and there were some completely new scenes, but honestly - even though they did it very well - most of it was padding the runtime. No new subplots or significantly expanded storyline. (Point being, we have proof that they COULD stretch the runtime without adding any of Wizard of Oz’s plot)
Just a fun fact, the composer for Wicked used the first 7 notes from Somewhere Over the Rainbow (the notes for the actual words "somewhere over the rainbow") in what he calls the "unlimited theme" (when Elphiba sings "unlimited. Together, we're unlimited" and any other time that particular theme plays in several songs.) Apparently he had heard that 8 of the same notes would be copyright infringement, so he only used seven notes and then changed the rhythm.
My road of good intentions led where such roads always lead...no good deed goes unpunished...was I really seeking good or just seeking attention.. is that all good deeds are when looked at with an ice cold eye...if that's all good deeds are maybe that's the reason why
As someone who has seen the stage show, this is the exact type of video I've been looking for since the movie came out, I am so happy someone did this. It is very interesting to see what people who have been introduced to Wicked through the movie have picked up on and how they piece these things together. Thank you for your profound braverism in sharing your theories to an audience of mostly deranged theatre kids.
As an additional piece of evidence for the Fiyero=scarecrow theory, when they first meet, Elphaba tells Fiyero to “get stuffed” and of course scarecrows are stuffed with hay/straw.
On the subject of predicting Part Two, did anyone else have an issue with the movie constantly foreshadowing that something is going to happen to Nessa? I don't know if that was in the show, but at a certain point I wanted to stand up in the theater and shout "GET IT? SHE'S GONNA GET CRUSHED BY A HOUSE!" Also, SPOILERS: If anyone unfamiliar with the story isn't sold on Boq being the Tin Man, the movie all but spells it out by giving him the last name Woodsman.
I think it's PREETY OBVIOUS that Nessa is the witch the house falls on and this is coming from someone who doesn't know part 2 so the foreshadowing not a problem imo
Yeah, I have not seen the second half and didn't have any spoilers about Boq, and I still can't really think of that as like, a theory, and not just something you're supposed to automatically know as soon as they say his full name 🤣 His name is essentially Back Woodsman 🤣 Maybe it also helps that I'm familiar with the original Baum books where he is always called the Tin Woodsman rather than just the Tin Man.
@@wildstarfish3786 I don't think he did in this movie? Unless he was in that first scene in Munchkinland and I didn't notice cause he hadn't been introduced yet. That is very possible. If you're referring to something that happens in the second half, I haven't seen that yet. But with that name, I will consider it deliberate misdirection is he doesn't turn out to be the Tin Man 🤣
THIS IS NOT A SPOILER: But the Wizard’s actual name is Oscar something I forgot. They show his name on a poster in Defying Gravity scene. That’s another reason he was able to manipulate the people of Oz even further. By being like, “I was practically named after the place!” Which was just false 😂and
His full name is Oscar Zoroaster Phadrig Isaac Norman Henkle Emmannuel Ambroise Diggs. He shortened it to O.Z. P.I.N.H.E.A.D when he became a circus performer, but he eventually dropped the Pinhead.
when making predictions for part two, it helps to remember that wicked does not exist in the same continuity as the wizard of oz. don't dismiss a theory just because it doesn't exactly align with the with the plot of the original movie or because it doesn't track with the motivations of the original characters
As someone who also does not know the ending, I am excited for this Also, randomly, I just watched all of your "What If Harry was in Slytherin" videos for the first time. You guys are geniuses
Me watching this, having not seen the show or watched The Wizard of Oz but HAVE read The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, knowing the Scarecrow's origin, the Tin Woodman's origin, the fact that the slippers are silver in the book, and wondering why Glinda and the Wicked Witch of the West were there at all when Dorothy showed up. I mean, obviously, the show is absolutely going to take creative liberties with Frank L. Baum's book. It's just funny to imagine a world where the Scarecrow doesn't describe the process of having his ears and eyes painted on and where the Tin Woodman didn't accidentally cut off every part of his body, bit by bit, replacing it with tin, until finally he replaces his torso and therefore has no heart anymore.
Doesn’t count as a spoiler because it was in part 1, Fiyero’s dance moves during his musical number are suspiciously reminiscent of the scarecrows moves in the Wizard of Oz…
2:46 *OH. MY. GOSH.* I didn’t look at the channel that made this video before I clicked it I was just like “oh that sounds interesting” AND THEN A FLOOD OF NOSTALGIA CAME TO ME WHEN I HEARD THOSE TWO WORDS- I’m so glad you guys are still creating!!
I always wondered why the Munchkins acted so scared of the Witch if she had no power in their land? When I was little I wondered why they all didn't just gang up on her lol
I always figured they were too scared. As a kid she terrified me during that scene especially. As for the 'no power here' I always interpreted it in terms of influence/governing power; not that her magic was literally repressed. (And obviously that's not the case with Elphie; she's from Munchkinland herself.)
Wizard of Oz is a title, not a name! The country is named Oz after (I think) their first queen who has some reincarnation stuff going on. Munchkinland according to the book is an incorporated colony to Oz - part of it but not really (like Puerto Rico) and the emerald city is kind of like the Vatican City.
Can't wait for the fan art of "Elphie" having her way with the Ray Bolger Scarecrow. Because we all know it's coming if it's not already out there.🤣🤣🤣🤣
It really is fascinating to see you come so close to the mark but then overshoot it. It's like we have all the same lego pieces, but only I have the whole instruction booklet. I look up three hours later and from the same foundational steps you've managed to build a submarine out of a rocket kit.
Shoot, he won’t see this but I want to clarify about the Jeff Goldblum’s character’s name. The land is Oz, the capital city is Emerald City, and that character has the title of “Wizard of Oz.”
2:26 Exactly!! As someone who has seen the show multiple times I am very excited to see what theories someone who's never seen it would come up with. So I am very glad you're doing this episode.
As someone who has seen the musical, I love seeing people who haven't theorize about Act 2! I thought your video was very perceptive and enjoyed watching it
They’d get MAJOR backlash. The movie is adapting the musical, and meant to give access to people who wouldn’t otherwise be able to see the musical. Completely negates that to change major things like the ending.
@@UnfazedPhoenixIt didn't used to be. There was a lot of Disney/Pixar, Star Wars, and other fandoms back when I watched regularly. The HP takeover is fine if that's what they want to do but it's definitely why I've fallen off watching.
NO SPOILERS Huge nut for Oz lore here. The thing with the name Oz is like this: Yes, the Land, City, and Wizard are all named Oz 1) The Land of called The Land of Oz and has no other name 2) The Emerald City is frequently called Oz, which is confusing but no weirder than "New York, NY" 3) The Wizard is named Oscar Zoroaster, but when he did traveling shows he went by his initials, O.Z.. Another thing: The Land of Oz has always had rulers named either Oz or Ozma prior to the forced takeover by the Gnome King. So when Oscar flew in with his balloon, people assumed he must be Oz, their new king. The rest is history.
I love the way he talks at the beginning about the original show being difficult to go and see, as if watching illegal recordings on UA-cam wasn't the only way most people in the world are able to interact with brodway musicals at all.
Honestly, I’m more shocked by how you’ve somehow managed to not get spoiled on this play/movie yet. I haven’t watched the play, and I know (roughly) how it goes
NOT A WICKED SPOILER: for anyone theorizing on part ii, keep in mind that Wicked is *not* canon to the 1939 Judy Garland/MGM film. There are references (most notably Elphaba’s green skin, and Glinda’s bubble) but the continuity is totally different, so not all plot/story elements need to align.
I love that in one of these predictions you paraphrased one of the best lines of the second act, and in another you referenced one of the show’s best songs. I really hope you do a reaction to this when Part Two comes out next year
Lol so interesting what things are right and what things are wrong. But there’s a bit of a pitfall with trying to work in exact bits from the 1939 movie; Wicked is more of a reimagining, not really a direct prequel. Was that “every good deed blows up in her face” thing an intentional reference??? Or just wildly coincidental.
The book plot is different from the show - knowing the book would not answer all of these questions for the show/movie versions. The show is *inspired by* the book but not a direct adaptation by any means.
@@NarnianQueenForeverdo the characters still turn into the ones from the wizard of oz, I've just seen the play and they were selling the book (giving warnings just in case) and I like having a visual for the characters before I read the book I know some people prefer it the other way round but my brain doesn't work that way so I was wondering if you could help me out please
@@mb-sb5ever It's been about two decades since I read the book, so I only remember for certain that Scarecrow's identity in the book is not the same as in the musical.
I also haven’t seen wicked. I think he’s onto something though. In the classroom when elphaba makes everyone fall asleep. Everyone except fiero. Just like the scarecrow in the wizard of oz. Boq when we first see him is leaning the way the tinman does when Dorothy starts oiling him. Almost like he needs Glinda to fix him.
I have seen the play and what got me for also securing Boq as tin man is also how he is constantly leaning and then straightening himself back up right…. like how the tin man always leans when he is stiff.
@@Veryy_Victoriaa his name’s not mentioned in the show, and I can’t remember if it’s mentioned explicitly in Maguire’s novels - they’re so dense and confusing that I missed a lot.

Right down to almost a complete song lyric 😂 "every good deed has some sort of unfair backlash" he could totally simplify that and be right there
There's some very solid foreshadowing in the show/movie that he picked up on for sure but I absolutely agree
He didn’t get most of it right.
Love how “boq is the tin woodsman because why not” instead of “boq is the tin woodsman because his last name is Woodsman”
i literally thought that was gonna be the first „hint“ he mentioned
No because when he said that in the movie I was like, this is too on the nose. (Idk or remember if this is canonical to the book but still hilarious)
@@kl-1447 : In the "Oz Canon" (i.e. the books), his name is "Nick Chopper," and is definitely a separate person from Boq.
And for Fiyero Elphaba also tells him to “get stuffed” when they first met so I feel like that’s more supporting evidence for that
Spoilers, yes
I did not catch that with the book but that is cool
I did not notice what Boq was reading
@@jessbrannon_actor tbf I have watched the bootleg of the movie like 5 times and watched it in the theater twice so far 😂 I’ve had way more opportunities to see the book than most people

I caught that, too.
That was crazy
Well, it's not like it's a unique idea. "No good deed goes unpunished" is a widely known phrase that was first recorded nearly a millennium ago.
I could be wrong, but, on the Pop I think he said he’s heard the original sound track
Which is why I think he knows what happens. And this is fake.
He maybe didn't see the show but saw some spoilers or videos online

I did want to answer your question about the name "Oz".
But Ozma is finally found even though the Wizard tried to get rid of her
... His name is OZ Pinhead? That's fantastic.
@drekfletch Yes! That's why he goes by only his first two initials, because the rest aren't so flattering.
@@LE-zy2od yes, but they probably won't do all the books so...
What he got right vs what he got wrong is actually really funny
Mostly the fact that I think he's caught up in the whole "wickedness" thing
“Every good deed is met with some kind of unfair backlash that blows up in her face.” They should write a song about that 😂 He’s so on the nose
Long term Wicked fan here, act 1 sets up the events in part 2 very effectively, even without you realising! The movie was perfect ❤
Yeah, plus the foreshadowing is quite heavy-handed in the show, and even more so in the movie, since they had more time to expand.
I thought about that during the movie. What if Morrible is making the drought to control everyone?
@@author.jessica.kemeryOMGOSH crazy scary theory
I will say, there's no drought in the musical. Madame Morrible's weather control is. Sounds like a garden variety expansion-induced plothole, lol
@@EveryDayALittleDeath Remember they are taking more details out of the original book, and Madame Morrible got up to some nasty stuff in the book. I'm also hoping that they write in Elphaba's and Fiyero's son Liir into the second part of the movie.
@@robertgronewold3326 SPOILERS FOR THE MUSICAL AND BOOK
They can't take that much from the original book and keep the PG rating, though.

Yeah, I don't buy he hasn't had spoilers 😂
🤔🤔🤔😏😏😏😏. Sneaky Brothers.
It may become my new motto!
this is the best. there are so many other comments pointing that out that this caught me very off guard.
No spoilers:
As someone who has seen the show MULTIPLE times!
Did you also catch how Fiyero wasn't affected by the poppies
LOVE that detail they added!!
Or how he dances like the scarecrow
@@abbyc6283In the musical, he wasn’t affected by Elphaba’s magic in that scene either. What was different is the type of magic she used. In the musical, it seemed like some sort of spell to slow down/stop time or distract everyone, but in was causing the poppy flowers to levitate and put everyone to sleep (except for Fiyero). I do agree with you though and I loved the change as I think the poppies were way more cinematic and symbolic for multiple reasons!
Yep! And in the original Wizard of Oz, it doesn't affect the Scarecrow either!
Or how one of the first things she told him was to get stuffed.
Longest intermission of my freaking life
Setting up a Boq-themed outfit to wear when I come back
Only two bathroom breaks the whole year? Ambitious
I love the fact that the intro was made to resemble you guys as Elphaba and Glinda
thank you it took me way too long to do that so I really appreciate you noticing and pointing it out

Everything correct but with the wrong details...
That's the thing with good forshadowing. If you pick up on it, you know exactly what's going to happen. The drive to keep going comes from wanting to see how it gets there. Storywriting 101
I could see it both ways. He's either trolling us or since crafting theories is his job he's just that good at it.
On Popcorn Culture he explained how he’s missed seeing the Wicked stage show so many times so I don’t think he’s trolling
his whole job is film theories, so it makes sense that he was able to be correct after putting the clues together ;)
he got so many of the plot points right but got every0nes motivations wrong lol
In the original novel, the slippers were silver. They were made Ruby for the movie because they looked better in technicolor.
Important to add the ruby slipper are still under copywrite the show got permission to use them as it's considered a different medium but the movie couldn't get to same permission.
@@sfsin3380they must have changed something then as even in the stage version they aren't red/ruby and are just called jewled shoes

One characteristic of Boq or “Bring Oil Quickly” that you missed was that he admitted in Part one that he cries a lot…
BOQ OMG
YOU'RE JOKINGGGGG NO WAY THATS HIS NAME
SPOILERS FOR PART 2:
i just keep screaming at my screen “YOU’RE SO CLOSE, J!!!” like with the fiyero theory, it’s like “right on the money, right on the money, right on the money, anddddd you lost it.” elphaba turned him into the scarecrow to PROTECT him, not punish him. and the tornado theory, like YES! madame morrible DID create the tornado! but elphaba didn’t take hold of it, madame morrible created it specifically to kill nessa. and as for the slippers, i want to tell him so badly that they’re not going to turn ruby!! they’re silver cuz that’s how they originally looked in the 1900 novel. and that’s not even a spoiler for part 2 so i want him to know that so badly but i know he’s not gonna read these comments so it’s irrelevant😂😂😂
When J called them Ruby Slippers, I just took that as his shorthand for comparing them to the original movie, not that he expected them to transform!
Sweet Oz! I knew his name was Oscar Diggs, but had no idea about those way-too-many middle names
EDIT: just got back from seeing the movie for the second time - when they’re in the attic during Defying Gravity, we see a poster with a picture of the Wizard, and “Oscar Diggs” written behind him.
Together, we're unlimited" and any other time that particular theme plays in several songs.)
Apparently he had heard that 8 of the same notes would be copyright infringement, so he only used seven notes and then changed the rhythm.

@@wafelsen That line was perfect foreshadowing. (Also there’s wheat embroidered on his shirt.)
On the subject of predicting Part Two, did anyone else have an issue with the movie constantly foreshadowing that something is going to happen to Nessa? I don't know if that was in the show, but at a certain point I wanted to stand up in the theater and shout "GET IT? SHE'S GONNA GET CRUSHED BY A HOUSE!"
Also, SPOILERS:
If anyone unfamiliar with the story isn't sold on Boq being the Tin Man, the movie all but spells it out by giving him the last name Woodsman.
@@SweetCuttlefish-AshleyE except it's not because boq ALSO exists alongside the tin woodsman iirc
@@wildstarfish3786 I don't think he did in this movie? Unless he was in that first scene in Munchkinland and I didn't notice cause he hadn't been introduced yet. That is very possible. @@SweetCuttlefish-AshleyE sorry I meant boq appears in the wonderful wizard of oz alongside the tin woodsman
THIS IS NOT A SPOILER: But the Wizard’s actual name is Oscar something I forgot. They show his name on a poster in Defying Gravity scene. That must be a common thing. His name is also Oscar in Oz the Great and Powerful.
@@coolnerdlll6053 , yes, Oscar Diggs is the canonical name of the wizard from the original book.

when making predictions for part two, it helps to remember that wicked does not exist in the same continuity as the wizard of oz. don't dismiss a theory just because it doesn't exactly align with the with the plot of the original movie or because it doesn't track with the motivations of the original characters
I hope you do more Wicked videos in the future!
"No good deed" hilarious
As someone who also does not know the ending, I am excited for this
Also, randomly, I just watched all of your "What If Harry was in Slytherin" videos for the first time.

They were silver in the book, they were only red in the movie but red looked better in colour

I was really hoping you would do a theory video despite most of the audience knowing the end! I'm very happy to see it!
O.Z is the Wizard initials for his first 2 names
This is so funny to watch as a massive fan of the show. I can’t wait to come back in a year to hear your thoughts on the full story
Can't wait for the fan art of "Elphie" having her way with the Ray Bolger Scarecrow. Because we all know it's coming if it's not already out there.🤣🤣🤣🤣

Sometimes it's called the Emerald City of Oz, and the Wizard is known as the Great and Powerful Oz
The wizard's full name is Oscar Zoroaster Phadrig Isaac Norman Henkle Emmannuel Ambroise Diggs.

Yes, but they could put a twist on it and use the book ending instead of the play ending. Which are two totally different ballgames.

Huge nut for Oz lore here. The thing with the name Oz is like this:
Yes, the Land, City, and Wizard are all named Oz
1) The Land of called The Land of Oz and has no other name
2) The Emerald City is frequently called Oz, which is confusing but no weirder than "New York, NY"
3) The Wizard is named Oscar Zoroaster, but when he did traveling shows he went by his initials, O.Z.. Another thing: The Land of Oz has always had rulers named either Oz or Ozma prior to the forced takeover by the Gnome King. So when Oscar flew in with his balloon, people assumed he must be Oz, their new king. The rest is history.
5:52, spoilers, it’s not. Wicked is a separate canon to the Wizard of Oz. Fiyero (as a Scarecrow) runs off with Elphaba at the end of the play

Clicked so fast. So excited for this. Love Wicked so much.

14:53 the wizards name was on one of the posters. His last name is Diggs. I could be wrong though
@@Veryy_Victoriaa I noticed that too during Defying Gravity. (I did know his name beforehand though)
@ have you seen the play or read the book? I haven’t read the story yet but have seen the play and can’t recall if his name was mentioned
@@Veryy_Victoriaa his name’s not mentioned in the show, and I can’t remember if it’s mentioned explicitly in Maguire’s novels - they’re so dense and confusing that I missed a lot.
I think the only place that explicitly states his name is the original L Frank Baum series, and it’s passed into other Oz versions as canon in a “nothing in this story contradicts it, so let’s roll with the information we have” kind of way.
I have the pop up book and y3 you’re right they call him diggs
as someone who saw wicked for the first time when i was 4 and has loved this show for 20 years of my life, i am so so so excited to see what you interpret and imagine for part two!!! this is such a fun idea i love it
Spoiler:
Bro just paraphrased "no good deed goes unpunished"
What’s interesting is he gets a lot right and then other times he is so close but passes right by stuff
even if you have seen the movie, i highly recommend you see the play. i liked it better. But the ozdust ball room is stunning in the movie
Agreed I LOVE the stage musical. See it 3 times in London and once on tour. Really want to see it on Broadway. It’s my favourite musical and I keep going back to see it I love it that much.
I love this so much and especially as someone who was obsessed with the book before the musical ever came out i love seeing how much hype this show is still getting
wasn’t ‘better help’ in the news recently? :/ 0:15
For what?
@ not super fluent in the details, but searching for “betterhelp privacy” should help explain - (might have been a privacy/data sharing situation, looks like they had to pay a large settlement but only small amounts were given to individuals)
I need to know what happened
No one cares.
@LunaiCarmen um. Google it? 😂 wth
No spoilers because I’m not being specific, but I always find it fascinating how you can do entirely the wrong math and come up with a lot of the right answers.
Was going to watch, saw the Better Help sponsorship, did not watch. Please find better sponsors in the future.
Very impressive J! You’re gonna love part two!
Indeed, no good deed goes unpunished!
2:54, spoilers, he does
Please tell me you're joking, the point of the video is to not get spoilers and you immediately spoil it..? 😭😭
NOT A SPOILER: A lot of your theories are dependent on things that happened in the Wizard of Oz film, and it necessarily the book. I recommend reading the Wizard of Oz book then coming back to this
